What was the Great Awakening?• A time of great religious revival and renewal in the American

Colonies (especially New England), beginning around 1725 and continuing through the 1750.

• The establishment of the Church of England as the only church in England suppressed other religions and led to worshippers “going through the motions” with little deeply-held convictions of heart and soul.

• Certain Christians began to separate from the way most people worshipped at the time and began to focus more on powerful preaching, personal repentance and need for salvation, and more emotional, expressive worship and prayer.

• Began in England with leaders such as the Wesley brothers, John and Charles, and George Whitefield.
