Injuries• All injuries & illnesses must be reported to

your school’s Athletic Trainers• All injuries must be reported prior to return

to activity regardless of severity or physician consultation

• Our philosophy is to return injured athletes to participation in the quickest and SAFEST manner possible using a progressive return to activity

Page 15: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program MRSA: What Is It?

• MRSA is a “Staph” infection• It does not respond to some antibiotics• It is Treatable• Like other infections, this can become serious

if left untreated• Severe infections can be prevented by

following proper hygiene and early detection

Page 16: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Universal Hygiene

• Clean clothes and equipment daily• Showering after all practices/competitions• Proper use of water bottles and cleaning them

daily• Encouraging these practices are essential to

minimizing the risk of infectious disease including MRSA

Page 17: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Prevention is Key• Athletes should:

• Shower immediately after practice• Wash Hands often

• Not share water bottles or clothing• Hydrate and get plenty of rest

If your athlete has a rapid onset of: fever, sore throat, chest congestion, and or body aches; they should inform the

athletic trainer by phone, stay home and see their family physician.

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Rehabilitation

• Rehabilitation and reconditioning is a primary role of the Certified Athletic Trainers

• We have the tools and time to work with your athlete

• Every injury requires some form of rehabilitation

Page 19: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Return To Play

• A Parent, Coach, Family Physician, Athlete, Administrator, ATC, or Team Physician can exclude an athlete from participation.

• All of these individuals must agree that the athlete can and should play

• The role of the Athletic Trainer is to make sure your athlete is safe to return to play.

Page 20: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Nutrition

• Make NUTRITION a priority• Disordered eating vs. eating disorder• Proper Hydration is essential • There is no quick fix… real food is far better

than any pill or supplement• Dangers of Nutritional Supplements

Page 21: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Page 22: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

• What Is ImPACT?– Web Based Concussion Management Tool– www.impacttest.com

• Why Are We Using It?– It is a tool that can help us identify if the brain has recovered

to a point that the athlete is safe to begin to return to sport.– It also helps us with the progression for full safe return to

sport.

Speaking about communication…

• Be mindful of what you or your children are Communicating online– Tweeting– Facebook– Instagram

Unfortunately some students have gotten in trouble for comments that are meant in jest but can be interpreted more seriously.

Page 27: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Sportsmanship

• Sportsmanship is all inclusive – athletes, coaches, parents, students and fans are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times

• We ALL represent Oakton• Do not condone improper language or

behavior• Treat all opponents, teammates, coaches and

officials with respect

Page 28: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Thoughts for PARENTS

• Encourage your child to participate for the enjoyment of athletics

• Commitment to the program / team– Support the Program

• Communication– We do not discuss playing time / strategy / play

calling / other student – athletes – Any athlete concerns must first be addressed by

the player to the coach

Page 29: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Thoughts for PARENTS

• Release them to the Game• Many times parents want to be the problem solver

because they find it painful to watch their children find their own solutions– Those can be strong learning opportunities for your children

• Their will be difficult times• After a contest

– Give your child time and space– Let them come to you – be a reflective listener– Keep corrections and criticisms to a minimum, they will hear it

from a coach

Page 30: Oakton High School Spring Sports Parent Information

Be Involved

• More and more research is showing benefits of being a multisport athlete– So be involved in more than one activity

• Overtraining of Young Athletes has become a large issue

College Sports Information:

From Dr. Greg Dale, Duke University Sport Psychologist:• Scholarships are very rare

– 95% of athletes will not receive one.– 65% of college athletes are non Division 1

• Your athlete has a better chance of getting an academic scholarship.
