Temple

“Nature is a temple where living pillars

Sometimes emit confused words;

Man passes through forests of symbols

Which observe him with familiar looks.”

-Charles Baudelaire

Left: Le Temple Idéal was created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle as a place of worship for all religions. Displayed beside the Climatron® during the 2008 Niki in the Garden exhibition, the sculpture hinted at a greater truth: that nature is also an ideal temple where all people can join together for a common cause: the health of our planet.

In 2008, the Garden embarked on a new seven-year strategic plan with a central theme of building sustainability. From protecting biodiversity around the world, to inspiring home gardeners to grow green, to educating our nation’s next generation of scientists, the Garden promotes the interdependence of people, plants, and the environment.

“ To discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment in order to preserve and enr ich life.”

People depend on plants for every aspect of their lives, from food and medicine to the protection of watersheds and the maintenance of soil fertility, and yet plants and every other element in the living world are threatened by the explosive growth of human populations, our increasing consumption rates, and the uses of technologies that are often unsustainable. We are exhausting the earth’s resources more rapidly than natural processes can replenish them, and the rate at which we are doing so is climbing with every passing year.

Last year, I discussed with scientists, conservationists, and politicians the dilemma that our world faces in the 21st century. There is a growing sense of awareness of our dependency on the natural world and a determination that we must act. The Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the strongest contributors to the knowledge base needed to pursue this cause effectively and a leader in helping people

everywhere to do what is necessary. How much of the natural environment that we enjoy today remains to serve and enrich our own lives and the lives of those who follow us depends directly on the actions we take.

By virtue of our history and the loyal support we have received over the course of the last 150 years, the Missouri Botanical Garden has accumulated rich scientific resources for studying plants and educating people about them. We now have an urgent role to play that our founder, Henry Shaw, could not have imagined, and in an economic environment most of us have never before experienced. I know we can count on our many friends to support these efforts to protect our “Temple of Nature.”

The Garden’s new strategic plan calls for us all to become, in the words of Dr. Peter Raven, “stewards of the earth.” The central theme is building sustainability. The goals challenge the Garden to become a global leader in scientific achievement, in promoting the responsible use of resources, and in connecting people with plants through gardening and education. (The text of the entire plan is available on the Garden’s website, www.mobot.org, under the “About” section.) If we pursue these goals, we will strengthen our institutional capacity and remain a leader among botanical institutions well into the 21st century.

Already the Garden is a leader—as one of the most popular and beautiful public attractions in St. Louis and one of the most respected science and conservation organizations in the world. Continued improvements to Garden grounds, such as the new Lichtenstein Victorian District, have helped prepare for the celebration of the Garden’s 150th anniversary in 2009. Our research and education collaborations with

local, national, and international institutions are flourishing.

Though always a place of respite and solitude for our members and guests, the Garden is not immune to the realities of worldwide financial turmoil. It is with confidence and optimism that we remain focused on our mission and diligent in our efforts. Henry Shaw entrusted us as responsible stewards of his gift and the gifts of those who have followed his example through sponsorships, tributes, bequests, and annual donations to the Henry Shaw Fund. Overcoming the current economic challenges will leave the Garden stronger for future generations, and we are grateful to our many supporters and friends in these challenging times.

Left: Garden botanists in Vietnam visited Yok Don National Park in 2008. They collected over 1,000 specimens, but just as importantly trained park rangers in collection and inventory techniques. The Garden collaborates with local institutions around the world to build scientific capacity and knowledge in countries that need it most.

Top: Dr. Thomas Croat in Ecuador with his 100,000th collection, making him the fourth botanist ever to have collected so many. The plant became the six millionth specimen in the Garden’s herbarium, one of the largest and fastest growing research facilities in the world. Herbaria are valuable tools in documenting the characteristics of plants because they allow scientists to compare plants from all over the world side by side.

Bottom: In Peru, school children in the Yanesha community harvest tomatoes from a school garden. Garden scientists work closely with the local communities of the Palcazú Valley to establish environmental education programs, such as organic community gardens and even a small restaurant (The Honeybee). Through education, local people are inspired to protect their natural resources.

Protecting biodiversity is the foundation of sustainability. Garden scientists work in nearly 40 countries around the world to document and protect plants. Who knows which new discovery might yield a crucial medicine?

“Whilst this planet has gone cycling on

according to the fixed law of gravity, endless

Plants are the basis of human life. They convert energy from the sun into all the necessities (food, clothing, shelter)—and many of the niceties (beauty, perfume, color)—of human existence. Since 1950, the human population has exploded from 2.5 to 6.8 billion. During this same period, the number of plant species has declined precipitously. By the end of this century, half of the estimated 300,000 species of plants could be extinct in nature.

Garden scientists work in dozens of countries throughout the world with colleagues there to document the species of plants found in each area and to make the information widely available. On average, several new plant species are discovered each day in the tropics, thousands each year. Once a plant has been named and described, it can be placed in relation to what is already known, examined for useful properties, and conserved. Discovery and documentation matter deeply in the intense struggle to preserve Earth’s biodiversity.

The Missouri Botanical Garden celebrated a scientific milestone in 2008 with the addition of the six millionth specimen to the herbarium. Essentially libraries of plant material, herbaria are vital research tools that allow scientists to compare samples of actual plants from all over the world—and to track changes over time. The Garden’s herbarium is the fastest growing—and one of the largest—in the world.

A Personal Milestone

“At first I considered it impossible that this species was new…After returning to the Garden, I went through all the existing species in our herbarium and none came close.”

Dr. Thomas Croat, P. A. Schulz Curator of Botany, has been collecting plant specimens in the wild for over 42 years. Anthurium centimillesimum (Latin centi- hundred and millesimum thousand) is Croat’s 100,000th collection, placing him in an elite group of only a handful of scientists. The plant, a giant Ecuadorean relative of the humble philodendron, is also the six millionth specimen in the Garden’s herbarium.

Garden Scientists Strive to Document and Protect

Publications, whether web-based or on paper, are another important knowledge-synthesizing tool. In early 2008, the Encyclopedia of Life (www.eol.org) launched online. This 10-year web initiative, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, seeks to provide expert information on all 1.8 million known species of animals, plants, and other living creatures on the planet. The Garden is a cornerstone partner, along with the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University, and others.

A “flora” is a scientific publication that documents and describes a region’s plants. The Missouri Botanical Garden Press publishes floras from all over the world. The year 2008 was a banner year for the Flora of China project with the publication of the next five volumes of what will eventually be a 50-volume work. Thousands of Chinese plants are used as medicine, but extensive exploitation of natural habitats means that many of these are threatened with extinction. The information included in the Flora of China is extremely important for conservation and for the search for solutions that address humankind’s many impacts on nature.

Around the World

Missouri Botanical Garden | Annual Report 20086 Missouri Botanical Garden | Annual Report 2008 7

“Hot spot” is the phrase biologists use to identify areas of especially high biodiversity. The tropics are home to many of the world’s hot spots: nearly two–thirds of all known plants in the world are found there. But lately, the phrase has taken on ominous overtones. The world is warming—ocean temperatures are rising, ice is melting, and plants are struggling.

Throughout the world, Garden scientists are studying the effects of global climate change on plants. They witness glaciers retreating in Tibet and the changes in alpine plants there. They track the gradual drying of the Serengeti Plain. They are creating a plant checklist of the Andes to guide conservation policy-makers in the region. In Madagascar, they monitor evidence of species extinction with the same hope: to document data and lobby governments to take action, sometimes during periods of considerable political unrest and peril.

Population pressure, increasing industrialization, deforestation, soil erosion, pollution: these are the problems affecting developing nations, a majority of which are located in the tropics where biological diversity is exceptionally high. Governments and communities cannot easily be convinced to conserve natural resources when people live in poverty.

That’s why in 2008 the Missouri Botanical Garden helped open a new medical clinic in Mahabo, Madagascar. Researchers had long identified the Agnalazaha forest as a conservation priority; however, the local population continued to collect firewood there. Garden staff met with the community and learned that inhabitants knew their exploitation of the forest was damaging, but they could not afford both fuel and medical care. By helping to start this clinic, botanists benefit the community—and save rare plants.

Parasite Lost

“The region where the plant grows is changing rapidly: forests are being logged for timber and the slopes burned to become pastures. In another decade, we might never have relocated this undescribed genus.”

Garden curator Dr. George Yatskievych has rediscovered a rare and unusual parasitic plant. Known from only a single specimen collected in 1985, the plant was found in the disappearing forests of western Mexico. It constitutes a genus new to science with a botanical name meaning “little hermit.” Even in our own backyard, plants are at risk. The Center for Plant Conservation seeks to preserve and restore rare native plants of the United States.

Garden Scientists Witness Global Climate Change

In tropical Vietnam, other types of investment were needed. The forests of Bach Ma National Park are remarkably diverse—with over 2,000 plant species (and one tiger!)—but poorly documented. In 2008, the Garden helped establish an herbarium for the park, providing essential equipment and training. The facility will allow park staff to document the flora of the land in their charge and promote its conservation to the local community.

These efforts and many like them are spearheaded by the Garden’s Center for Conservation and Sustainable Development. The Center analyzes data collected by Garden researchers, consults on conservation strategies, trains local botanists, and works to find community-based solutions to conservation problems. In addition, the Garden’s William L. Brown Center has a special mission to preserve traditional knowledge about plants for a sustainable future. Their work helps identify traditional medicines and other types of useful plants, so that they can be preserved before habitat destruction and global climate change can take their toll.

Global climate change has forced the Himalayan snow lotus (Sanssuren laniceps) to the top of its range. It has nowhere left to go—except extinct. With your help, Garden scientists can discover and document species before it’s too late.

Far left: In Madagascar, Garden staff member Charles Rakotovao takes an unstable dugout canoe across the Andraronga River with a load of field gear. This is the only transportation available to field botanists in remote parts of the country. The Garden maintains an office of 60 researchers in Madagascar; all but one person is native Malagasy. This provides not only jobs, but education and training to local people, and helps to ensure community involvement in conservation initiatives.

Left: Clethra concordia, named to commemorate the peace treaty that finally settled the bitter 1995 Ecuador–Peru border conflict. With peace, Garden researchers have been able to explore the sandstone plateaus adjacent to the border, where this unusual plant was found. New plant species are found every day in the tropics. Garden researchers are in a race to document them before they disappear.

In nature, there is no waste. Deciduous leaves fertilize the soil. Dead plants and animals provide habitat and sustenance for other plants and animals before breaking down. Everything is used and reused in a closed cycle. Human population, which had previously grown in harmony with nature, has tripled over the last 75 years. Human use of natural resources has grown out of balance and has begun to disrupt nature’s delicate cycles.

Sustainability is “meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Today, humanity is currently consuming 25 percent more than the world produces on an ongoing basis. We must change our ways. The Missouri Botanical Garden strives to make the most sustainable choices for the future of people, plants, and the planet.

In 2008, the Garden was excited to announce that the Garden’s cafe, Sassafras, was designated the first Certified Green RestaurantTM in the state of Missouri by the national nonprofit Green Restaurant Association. Read all about the certification qualifications on our website, www.mobot.org.It’s just one of the many ways the Garden is bringing our sustainability initiatives to the public.

Nature has no waste. Everything is recycled. The Garden seeks to inspire a love of nature in the public and to establish connections between healthy living and a healthy planet.

Left: The Niki exhibition in 2008 attracted scores of families, whose younger members were delighted to touch and even climb on the colorful—and child-friendly—mosaic sculptures. Artist Niki de Saint Phalle sought to inspire children to love nature and the outdoors.

Above left: Green resources manager Jean Ponzi briefs the staff of the newly Certified Green™ restaurant Sassafras on the latest green initiatives. The restaurant is one of many ways the Garden highlights sustainability for our visitors.

Above right: Events such as the Members’ Family Picnic and the Whitaker Music Festival attract a diverse and family-friendly audience to one of the most beautiful venues in St. Louis.

Through outreach and community-building, the Garden strives to share our environmental mission with the public and inspire a love of nature. In 2008, the membership program continued to expand family programming with a record-setting Eggstravaganza Easter event, the Members’ Family Picnic, and Halloween Ghouls in the Garden. The Young Friends organization reached out to young professionals in their 20s and 30s. The Garden continues to enjoy one of the best membership renewal rates of any cultural attraction in the country: 76 percent.

The Garden welcomed Niki, an installation of the colorful mosaics of French sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle. Niki described the garden setting of most of her works as a “dialog between nature and the sculptures.” The exhibit drew crowds of young families, as children were welcome to touch, climb, play with, and sit on many of the whimsical pieces.

Major festivals also continued to inspire visitors to grow green. Annual orchid and holiday flower shows saw increased attendance. The Whitaker Music Festival is one of the most popular outdoor music series in St. Louis with a 20 percent increase in attendance, up to 68,934. Good weather once again helped propel the Garden’s two largest weekend events into record-breaking territory. The three-day Japanese Festival, presented by Wachovia Securities, drew 49,052 people, and the 17th annual Best of Missouri Market attracted 27,649 shoppers over two days.

Providing sites of beauty and reflection is an essential part of the Garden’s mission and a primary means by which we make connections between people, plants, and the environment. Presenting landscapes that are beautiful and restorative is essential to inspire in the public a love of nature. From this inspiration, the desire to grow plants, to cultivate a garden, or even just to protect the view, can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle. The Garden promotes the planting of the “right plant for the right location” (including native species and well-adapted Plants of Merit™), educates about the risk of invasives, and encourages all home gardeners to “grow green” by composting, conserving water, and recycling.

In 2008, the Garden dedicated a new area of inspiration for the public. The Doris Waters Harris Lichtenstein Victorian District unifies and enhances several gardens and Victorian-era buildings, transforming the area around Tower Grove House into a Victorian showplace just in time for the Garden’s sesquicentennial celebrations in 2009.

The Garden’s collections of living plants are impressive. Our collection of 385 individual oak trees representing 48 different species was certified by the North American Plant Collections Consortium in 2008. Along with 14 other prestigious institutions nationwide, the Garden will collaborate to strengthen and preserve plant diversity of oaks. In the same year, the Missouri Department of Conservation certified four Missouri State Champion Trees on Garden grounds: a white basswood (Tilia heterophylla), western soapberry (Sapindus drummondii), possumhaw (Ilex decidua), and sugarberry (Celtis laevigata). Size is calculated using a formula that factors in a tree’s height, crown spread, and trunk circumference.

Over 335 Tons Recycled!

The Garden operates one of the most extensive gardening plastic recycling programs in the nation. The program has expanded to multiple collection locations throughout the community: the resulting yield brought the total collection to over 335 tons of plastic kept out of landfills over the program’s ten-year existence. In 2008, the collection was awarded the American Public Garden Association’s Award of Excellence. The program is sponsored by St. Louis–Jefferson Solid Waste Management District, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Environmental Improvement and Energy Resource Authority, and Monrovia Growers.

A vibrant piece of the 2006 Glass in the Garden exhibition returned to the Garden permanently in 2008, thanks to gifts from Lucianna Gladney Ross and June and Charles Gallagher. Chihuly’s Trellises will appear in the Gladney Rose Garden during warm-weather months.

The Garden’s William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening continues to thrive. The year saw a 20 percent increase in attendance at this gardener’s resource, the largest in the nation, where visitors can take classes, research in databases and the library, and seek advice from some of the region’s foremost horticulture experts.

The Center’s Plants of Merit™ program, which recommends outstanding but underutilized plants for the region, has expanded to include ornamental edibles as well as more native plants. The program was assisted in 2008 by a generous challenge grant from the William T. Kemper Foundation—Commerce Bank, Trustee.

The Horticulture Division has 58 full-time and 4 part-time employees, assisted by 6 interns and 641 volunteers, under the direction of Vice President James P. Cocos.

Sustainability starts at home. By inspiring home gardeners to grow vegetables, native plants, Plants of Merit™, conserve water, compost, and recycle, the Garden helps grow a healthier planet!

Top: Over 150,000 people visit the Kemper Center for Home Gardening each year for information, advice, and inspiration for their gardens. The vegetable garden is one of the most popular displays, as home gardeners get interested in growing their own food. As the author of New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma Michael Pollan writes, “It doesn’t get more local than your own backyard.”

Bottom: There is a long tradition of art in gardens, and installations such as Chihuly’s Trellises, 2006 show why. The best art doesn’t compete with nature but complements it, allowing the viewer to better appreciate the graceful curves of the climbing roses while invoking at mid-day the magic of a fiery sunrise.

Plants form the basis of life on Earth. Humans must live in ways that moderate our impact on ecosystems if we are to survive. Sustainable living requires a basic knowledge of plants, as well as an understanding of the web of life, the cycles of nature, the flow of energy, and the interdependence of all living things. The Garden’s education and interpretation programs, grounded in the best scientific research, provide high-quality sustainable learning at five locations throughout the region.

In 2008, children were invited to the National Arbor Day Foundation’s “Exploring Trees Inside and Out.” This nationally touring exhibit attracted over 35,000 visitors to sit inside a giant leaf and be surrounded by the process of photosynthesis, smell scents from various plants, hear forest animals, and experience tree life from the inside out.

School Programs added nine new Garden classes this year for students in grades K through 8. Students explored the rain forest and learned how the birds and the bees lead to flowers and trees. All classes meet local science standards and are free to students in St. Louis City/County.

The Litzsinger Road Ecology Center continues to provide regional leadership in place-based education, linking teachers and students to their local communities. Through collaborative research, presentations, and publications, LREC programs serve as models inspiring change in schools across the country.

A new Nature Explore Classroom™ opened at the Shaw Nature Reserve to complement the one established inside the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden in 2007. A collaborative effort between the National Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation, the classrooms were developed as a response to the growing disconnect between children and nature. They feature hands-on, creative fun with natural materials in a natural, outdoor setting.

Since 2006, when the Garden’s Horticulture Therapy program expanded from senior citizens to include special-needs populations with mental and physical disabilities, the number of people served has tripled. Using nature as a therapeutic medium can aid therapists in achieving specific client goals.

Families can drop in on Great Green Adventures each month or explore the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden with Garden staff stationed throughout to enhance their educational visit. Whether it is a class for a preschooler and dad, an activity for school-aged children and grandparents, or a more extensive summer camp or nature study, the Garden provides a variety of opportunities for kids of all ages in nature.

The Education Division has 52 full-time, 4 part-time, and 5 seasonal employees, assisted by 1 intern and 687 volunteers under the direction of Vice President Deborah Chollet Frank.

The Missouri Botanical Garden includes a family of attractions throughout the St. Louis area, each uniquely complementing the Garden’s mission.

The Missouri Botanical Garden practices sustainability at the most fundamental level, by protecting biodiversity. At the EarthWays Center, visitors learn how to make more sustainable choices at the local level, in their own lives and homes. EarthWays also offers environmental education to school children, including the popular Young Green Builders summer camp, and serves as the headquarters of the U.S. Green Building Council’s St. Louis Regional Chapter. In 2008, EarthWays launched a green resource hotline for consumers’ sustainability questions.

The 2008 Green Homes and Renewable Energy Festival, sponsored by AmerenUE, grew bigger than ever through a new collaboration with the Missouri Coalition for the Environment. The event attracted thousands of visitors to learn about energy efficiency, alternative fuels, recycling, composting, native plant landscaping, and more. A Green House Tour highlighted the growing green homes movement in St. Louis.

The EarthWays Center has 9 full-time staff, assisted by 32 volunteers, under the leadership of Director Glenda Abney. Attendance in 2008 was 7,010.

the Garden beyond

Plants, Animals, People, and Sustainability

The Missouri Botanical Garden discovers and protects plants around the world. At the Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit, visitors can get acquainted with local Missouri plants and ecosystems—and the steps they can take to preserve them. Featuring one of the best examples of restored tall-grass prairie in the region, the Shaw Nature Reserve has become renowned for native plant expertise. The Whitmire Wildflower Garden is one of the best native plant displays in the Midwest. The Spring Wildflower Sale attracts thousands each year. The Native Plant School offers classes for homeowners as well as professional landscapers in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Grow Native! program.

The Missouri Department of Conservation and Shaw Nature Reserve share a commitment to conservation. The partnership, now in its fifth year, offers greater opportunities for native plant promotion through the Grow Native! program and youth education initiatives. A bi-annual Prairie Day event, the Master Naturalist program, and Discover Nature-Women weekend are among recent co-sponsored events.

The Shaw Nature Reserve has 15 full-time and 5 part-time staff, assisted by 141 volunteers, under the leadership of Director John Behrer. Attendance in 2008 was 58,346.

The Missouri Botanical Garden promotes connections between people and plants. At the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield, visitors learn about the connections between people, plants, and animals too—and how to preserve nature’s fragile balance among them.

In 2008, the Butterfly House was confirmed for a second five-year period and remains the only butterfly house in the nation accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. To be accredited, the Butterfly House underwent a rigorous investigation to ensure it will continue to meet ever-rising standards of conservation, education, safety, and animal care.

Conservation is an essential element of the Butterfly House mission and operation, as seen in our expanded partnership with El Bosque Nuevo in Costa Rica, a butterfly farm that utilizes 100 percent of profits to fund a goal of a 25,000-acre protected reserve. The Butterfly House is also part of the Butterfly Conservation Initiative, a coalition of facilities dedicated to the conservation of threatened and endangered North American butterflies and their habitats.

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House has 13 full-time, 7 part-time, and 10 seasonal staff, assisted by 180 volunteers, under the leadership of Director Joe Norton. Attendance in 2008 was 139,846.

Left: A migrating monarch alights on a dahlia in the Samuels Bulb Garden. Everywhere, the Garden is alive with the connections of plants, animals, and people.

*Botanical Garden Subdistrict Since 1971, residents of St. Louis City and County have generously supported the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District (ZMD). The ZMD is a property tax-supported district, which distributes funds through five cultural subdistricts, including the Botanical Garden Subdistrict which provides support to the Missouri Botanical Garden. The Garden is grateful for this continued support. (Commissioners for the ZMD and the Botanical Garden Subdistrict are listed on page 38.)

The Members’ Board

The Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District (ZMD) is a tax-supported cultural district governed by an eight-member board of directors, each appointed for a four-year term by the Mayor of the City of St. louis and by the St. louis County Executive.

Frankie M. Freeman, chairDonna G. Knight, vice chairJoyce l. Margulis, assistant secretaryKay Marshall Adrienne Morgan, immediate past chairRobert A. Powell, treasurerBen UchitelleDavid Weber, secretary

J. Patrick Dougherty, executive directorSharon l. Wilcutt, deputy director

Awarded since 1893 and named for the Garden’s founder, the Henry Shaw Medal honors those who have made a significant contribution to the Missouri Botanical Garden, botanical research, horticulture, conservation, or the museum community. In 2008, the Garden honored Dr. Thomas E. Lovejoy, President of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment, for his work on the interaction between climate change and biodiversity for over 20 years.

Trustee Warren McKinley Shapleigh was honored in 2008 for 50 years of service, the longest serving trustee in Garden history. An emeritus trustee today, Shapleigh has dedicated himself to the Garden during a remarkable period of change and growth. When he joined the board in 1958, the Climatron® did not yet exist and Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the United States. Shapleigh chaired the trustee committee that selected Dr. Peter H. Raven as Garden director in 1971. He has made possible a variety of features, including the Shapleigh Memorial Fountain, the Kercheval Fountain, a viewing area in the Margaret Grigg Nanjing Friendship Chinese Garden, and the land on which the Monsanto Center is located.

Described by Time magazine as a “Hero for the Planet,” Dr. Peter H. Raven champions research around the globe to preserve endangered plants and is an advocate for building a sustainable environment. Dr. Raven has been president of the Garden since 1971 and during this time has won many prizes and awards, including the National Medal of Science. In 2008, he received several major national and international awards.

The BBVA Foundation gave the Award for Scientific Research in Ecology and Conservation Biology to Dr. Raven and co-recipient Harold Mooney, professor of Environmental Biology at Stanford University. The award, which carries a $750,000 prize, was granted to Raven and Mooney because they “lead the world in seeking ways to prevent biodiversity loss.”

The Botanical Research Institute of Texas in Fort Worth presented its 2008 International Award of Excellence in Conservation to Dr. Raven because “he champions research around the world to preserve endangered plants and animals.”

The Arbor Day Foundation awarded the J. Sterling Morton Award, the highest individual honor given by the foundation, to Dr. Raven for his “commitment to preserving trees and the natural world, which has inspired generations of conservationists around the world.”

The National Geographic Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Raven to the board, commenting, “National Geographic is fortunate to have the additional counsel and experience of Peter Raven, who has an impressive record of leadership and service in conservation.”

Multiple Awards for Garden’s President

The William L. Brown Center awarded the William L. Brown Award for Excellence in 2008 to Dr. Nancy Turner of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Turner is an ethnobotanist who has devoted her career to the study and preservation of native North American plant genetic resources, especially those of the indigenous peoples of the northwest. The Garden’s William L. Brown Center presents the award biannually. The award is made possible through a generous endowment from the Sehgal Family Foundation, in cooperation with the family of Dr. William L. Brown.

William L. Brown Award

The Garden awarded the 2008 Greensfelder Medal to Dr. Brent Elliott, librarian and archivist at the Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Library in London. The Albert P. and Blanche Y. Greensfelder Medal was established in 1980. It honors individuals who have made significant contributions to landscape, garden, and park planning, and design for urban improvement. Dr. Elliott is a renowned authority on Victorian gardens. He collaborated on the landscape design and interpretation of the new Victorian District.
