Brand Book:A Brand Book establishes distinct guidelines on how all aspects of a company’s brand will be handled. The brand book is the basis for all interactions on behalf of a company: web and print communications, social media, advertising and design. It is the thread that holds together what the public sees.

The story of Nosara Yoga Institute unfolds from a 40-year-old love affair with yoga in which our founders have been engaged in the study, practice and teaching what they love most in life—Yoga. From the depths of their own personal inquiries into how we learn to learn from our own, authentic experiences in life, Don and Amba Stapleton have been inventing and refining ways that stimulate self-development and creative fulfillment. Twenty years ago, they vowed to combine their efforts into founding Nosara Yoga Institute as a place to guide others in discovering their own way of practicing and teaching yoga with skillfulness and satisfaction.

Before founding the Nosara Yoga Institute in 1994 with Amba, Don was the CEO and Dean of Yoga Education at the largest residential yoga center in the United States. As yoga students, both Don and Amba lived an ashram lifestyle for many years—Don for 20 years, and Amba for 7. From their own immersion in Hatha Yoga practices, and lifelong dedication to the service of teaching, Don and Amba provide a depth of knowledge drawn from personal experience that makes Nosara Yoga Teacher Training truly unparalleled in its originality.

MissionOur mission is to deliver an inquiry-based, non-authoritarian yoga curriculum that develops the multi-dimensional Self. In a beautiful, natural setting that supports relaxed, non-competitive learning, we intend to deliver our curriculum in a way that strengthens inner guidance and direct connection to source through developing witness consciousness.

Page 12: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 13: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

PersonalityWe call our approach “interdisciplinary.” We explore what is common to the diverse disciplines of yoga being taught and practiced in the world today and utilize the fundamental practices and philosophy for delv-ing into the yoga that comes from the inside out. Yoga teachers whose lives are transformed from the inside out are capable of transmitting enthusiasm for the learning process. Our shared mission is to awaken awareness of the power we have as yoga educators to invent new ways of being together as human beings. Learning together in a yoga class invites a depth of relationship that supports a depth of personal inquiry. Every aspect of each 200-, 500- and 1000-hr professional training pro-gram is designed as an inquiry into your own yoga—What’s your yoga?

When you study with us, we hope you will find a stimulating environ-ment that will help you deepen your own relationship to life through exploring the yoga you are born to live, practice and share with the world around you.

Why the frog?Sages of far distant times proclaimed the frog a sacred symbol, show-ing how their teachings were founded on the wonders of nature. They saw the frogs transform from floating masses of jellylike eggs into tad-poles, from a tadpole into a frog. Frogs have the capacity to hibernate in the ground during periods of drought for as many as 7 years. So in this way the frog is a symbol of the cycles of transformation that occur through a lifelong inquiry of yoga.

Also, our pre-Columbian, Egyptian and Roman predecessors used the symbol to nurture love, to attract friendship and to hasten the re-covery from disease and injury. Yoga is also a vehicle to nurture love, attract friendship and recover from disease and injury.

But most importantly, the Nicoya Peninsula was once inhabited by the pre-Colombian indigenous peoples of the Americas, whose most sacred symbol was the frog. So the frog is our small way of showing respect and gratitude for the land they have entrusted to us.

LogoThis logo is to be used for all screen and printed items including websites, printed publications, advertising, banners, posters, flyers and product packaging.

Treat our Logo nicely.Always center the frog above the words.Always leave the logo some space to breathe. Sit the logo on white or light colors so we can read it.Do not rotate the logo.Do not add embellishments like drop-shadows, embossings etc.

Some other options...If the frog just doesn’t fit above the words (e.g. on toothbrushes and pens), place him to the left. When the words are not legible (e.g. on a dark picture), we print the words in whiteWhen color printing costs a fortune (e.g. on tote bags and t-shirts), we use black or white

The Yantra • We use the Yantra as a background design element

• As a whole circle behind text

• As a partial circle blended off the page

• Colors: white, light gold, light grey

Cirlces• We use four linked circles to connect lists of ideas together

• It echoes the center line of our NYI frog

Round corners• We round the corners of photos when we can not full bleed.

PhotographyHere is where we talk about pictures....

Page 43: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 44: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 45: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

Quality:Every technically bad picture is a missed opportunity, it reflects bad on us.

• Grain:Our pictures are crystal clear, with not much grain.

• Resolution: The resolution is optimal for the media, we use the function “save for web” on photoshop

to save our images in png 24 if they are for social media uses, jpeg´s in 85% quality for website.

• Blur: no lens blur is allowed, motion blur on occasion, depending if we want to add a little “speed” and

movement to the picture.

Pose:

How the subject is depicted. We strive for joy and learning, for the deep resolution of finding ourselves.

Every picture is an opportunity to show who we are.

• We like pictures of people showing love, laughter and profound feeling.

• We avoid pictures where the subject does not look good and “natural”

• Pictures showing good form in yoga are preferred.

Page 46: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 47: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 48: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

Color:

We are a warm brand

• Just as our logo, our pictures are tinted warm.

• Shadows: The low range is not absolutely black, it has a little bit of red and yellow.

• Midtones: They move a little bit to the cyan, green and blue sides. This helps us in shots where there

is nature as well as people.

• Highlights: Mostly yellow with a little red.

• Saturation: Highly saturated pictures, but not overly done.

• Filters: they are your worst enemy

Theme:Subject, situation of the photo. We move around 3 subjects, we have great teachers, a great spot and

people already attending our trainings.

• Don & Amba: They are the reason most people go to NYI. They like seeing them in different situations:

teaching, learning from an external teacher, practicing but most of all both of the them showing the

great love they have for yoga and for each other. We use this photos when there is an important

message, when we need to gain reach in social media, when we want to say clearly there is experience

and caring in our methods.

• Nature: This shots are for showing where we are located, the importance of retreating to an special

place. We have the great advantage of having the beach so near we can actually go practice there.

That´s a huge thing, we use it to lure people into seeing themselves on that spot.

Page 49: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 50: NYI 2015 brand book Draft
Page 51: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

• Practicing: We use this pictures whenever we want people to realise this is not an “impossible

dream”, students come all the time to our trainings and practices.

Symbolism:

What the picture represents. We look for meaningful photos.

• We are using a picture of the beach, are we trying to show the strength of the sea at high tide, the

calmness of a sunset or the promise of a new dawn? The sea and the beach can mean many things, lets

be aware of them and use them to make our message stronger.

• What about all the green around us?: it promises a contact with nature, a time of peace and relaxation,

of wonder for people who live in the concrete jungle. Every picture should look majestic, and exotic,

full of life.

• Our objects: There are many details around our grounds, from the bell at samadhi mandir to fountains,

and every single one used in our rituals. They move people, they communicate a promise of entering a

different reality to the one they are used to.

Intention:

Why are we selecting this picture.

• Does the picture represents the idea?.

• Is this picture the best we got?.

• Do we really need a picture to illustrate the idea.

Page 52: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

Web Usage:

• At least 40% of every page is a picture, or an illustration.

• We find the tools to show them as big as possible.

• They change, we are not static, our homepage looks different at least every 3 months from time to

time, as well as cover pictures on social media.

• We use pictures as background, and when needed (lots of text) and possible we blend one side of

them to a solid color (i.e.: flyer).

• Whenever possible we make a full bleed if not, we round a corner.

Text & ToneThis is how make our voice be heard

Page 58: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

Approchable & Warm: We are not selling a product, we are opening a gate for people to find the opportunity to experience a life changing event. That means we need to sound approachable, warm.

Smart & Silent:NYI’s first objective is to become a beacon of knowledge amongst any other costarican and international yoga schools. That doesn´t mean we are going to get all pretentious about it, but we are stating it in a smart and “silent” way, by giving people free information on how to help others find this great treasure we found. That`s important to keep in mind while looking through content to use, and the copy we use for our posts on social media. We should never say graphically or in any written form “we are the best”, “there´s no one out there like us”.

Non-Authoritarian:NYI teaching method is non-authoritarian, and that is why every time we approach our audience we are going to make sure we are not pushing them to think that NYI is the best Yoga school, but instead make them ask themselves if our method is the one they want to learn. Our task is to give them enough clues to actually make that happen.

To the point: Based on the body of knowledge and the experience backing us, we speak clear, and to the point, not going around and around.

Page 59: NYI 2015 brand book Draft

Grateful:When we have to respond to comments or criticism we make sure we are grateful, yes, every time. We will find the best channel (public or private)l for it. This does not mean that we won’t respectfully address any trouble we could face.

No, we don´t show off:Our copy is based on the idea that the more you know the less you have to show off. We lure people into learning, we let them know our book is open.

All of this reflects in:• Simple compact headlines.

• Small bodies of text with a learn more button if needed.

• The hierarchy is important, we use contrast (bold, italic, size and color) in our texts to prioritise

information. (see the font & typography section).

• Hashtags: we use them as part of our copy, not just at the end of our posts in social media
