President's Message

There’s a lot going on at the Napa Club these days. In April we welcomed Don Neely’s NRA band at the Embassy Suites. They are always a popular addition to our band list and this was no exception. They were at the top of their form and the line up was excellent - a good time was had by dancers and listeners alike. In May Cell Block 7 entertained us at Grant Hall at the Veteran’s Home in Yountville. Cell Block 7 was great as usual and resi-dents at the Vets Home seemed to enjoy it too. It’s always fun to have that band in the house. This was our first visit to Grant Hall and there was a good response from our members. It has a wonderful dance floor and a sound system as well as food and drink available at reasonable prices and there is parking across the street. Phil Ingalls is figuring out a plan for the tables that will be more comfortable for all. In addition, the price is right for the club – we pay for the band, but there is no cost for Grant Hall. On June 8, we will return to Embassy Suites to enjoy the Devil Mountain Jazz Band. It should be a very lively afternoon with a very hot band. Our July, August and September meetings will be held at Grant Hall at the Veteran’s Home. This will be considered a trial and after the September meeting a decision will be made whether to continue or not – up to the Napa board as well as the Vets Home. At our last Board meeting, we decided to contribute some of our Youth Jazz Camp funds to Trad Jass as they have three kids going to camp this year. We don’t have any one interested, so donated a portion of the fee for each of the three talented musi-cians - a nice opportunity to work with Trad Jass. I hope you will all be patient with us as we decide on a venue and will continue to enjoy the music we all love with us. I look forward to seeing you all at Embassy Suites on June 8.

Linda

Editor’s Notes: Here we are in June and the beginning of Summer. Time is flying by and we are looking at changes as we move up the road to Yount-ville for July through September. There are some tradeoffs as we save some money and hopefully stay in business, but while Grant Hall is spacious has a great dance floor, it is not as elegant as the Embassy Suites. We gain a grand piano and a professionally managed sound system set up for us. Elsewhere, Summer events have started with the Sacramento Music Festival. While their attempts at diversity has resulted in the loss of some opportunities to hear Tra-ditional Dixieland Bands. Many of the di-verse genres are enjoyable as well.. On Fri-day, in addition to Bob Schulz and the Nightblooming Jazz Men, I heard Tom Rigney’s Cajun fiddle , Dave Bennett’s Memphis Boys with exciting Rock n Roll Boogie and Sister Swing. In June and July we will travel north to Lacy Washington with some very good Traditional Dixieland groups from all over the nation. Then there is our own local one day festival at Cline Cellars. Hope to see many of you along the Jazz Trail.

KEN COLYER’S JAZZMEN—"LIVE • REDISCOV-ERED TREASURES FROM THE CLASSIC YEARS" (Upbeat URCD 257). Playing time: 71 mins. 58 secs. Walkin’ with the Kingº*; Baby Won’t You Please

Come Homeº*; Trouble in Mindº†; I Can’t Give You

Anything but Loveº†; Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please

Come Homeº†; Careless Loveº†; Sweet Lorraineº;

Meeting at the Building‡*; Winin’ Boy Blues*; Work-ing Man Blues; One Sweet Letter from You*; Dusty

Rag; Joplin’s Sensation.

Recorded in the late 50’s, locations indefinite but most likely Studio 51 and Eel Pie Island, London. Personnel: Ken Colyer, trumpet, guitar‡, vocal*; Ian Wheeler, clarinet; Mac Duncan, trombone; Ray Foxley, pianoº; Johnny Bastable, tenor banjo; Ron Ward, string bass; Colin Bowden, drums. Rosa Scudder, vocal†. Barry Palser replaces Dyer, trombone; Rimington plays alto. This latest Ken Colyer Jazzmen CD contains recordings that have never been issued previously, although most of the tunes themselves have appeared on other Colyer al-bums. The configuration of the Jazzmen on this CD is what is often called the “classic” one, or what John Griffith, the owner of the tapes from which it derived, calls “Colyer’s finest band.” Colyer is at the top of his game here, totally in command of the derby mute and of the broad vibrato that were among his signatures. He adroitly guides the band in the direction he wants through each of the selections. Dun-can and Wheeler provide superb accompaniment and sup-port, making for a fine front line. As the opening track Walkin’ with the King illustrates, there is always excitement from the ensemble playing, another all-important compo-nent of the Colyer interpretations. The rest of the program is typical Colyer fare, the selections featuring the collective improvisation that Colyer deemed essential to the New Orleans style he was after.

One problem, however, that dogged so many of Colyer’s

recordings is the difficulties with tempo consistency. As seemed to have happened so often, the “controlled ac-celeration,” otherwise known as “rushing,” that was asso-ciated with the band is present. More often than not, Bastable was the guilty party, although he was not the only contributor. Another is that the recording quality falls a bit short. While there is no certainty as to who recorded the per-formances, there is no doubt that it was portable equip-ment run by a non-professional. The balance is off in many of the tracks—probably only one mike was used. The result is that the piano and string bass are almost inaudible on most cuts, and the banjo is over-recorded on others. Also as might be expected, vocals suffer somewhat. All but four of the tracks contain vocals, ei-ther by Colyer or by Rosina Scudder, a singer I had never heard of prior to this release. (According to Mike Pointon’s liner notes, she was a diminutive person, “not much more than three feet tall,” but she did not have a voice to match.) Regrettably, much of her singing is off-mike to one degree or another. Like hers, Colyer’s vo-cals are also victims of the “off-mike” syndrome. Despite these relatively minor shortcomings, Colyer fans will surely want this release, especially those who are completists. Others less familiar with Colyer’s work will gain an insight into what made his bands tick once they get past the recording problems mentioned. It is all there on this CD. In many respects, then, this is “classic Ken Colyer.” It can probably be purchased in the U.S. at Jazzbymail, which stocks Upbeat releases, at www.jazzbymail.com, or at the Upbeat website, www.upbeat.co.uk, which pro-vides for ordering by mail if one clicks on New Releases.
