Discussion Question Response Requirements

When answering Discussion Questions, be sure to thoroughly answer all parts of the questions, including sufficient content and meeting the word minimum of 200 words (there will be point deductions for not meeting this word requirement). The requirements are to enhance the overall discussion of the class as well as help you to go more in depth to the topics. Be sure to keep the answers to the discussion questions relevant to the question posted. The due dates for Discussion Question Responses will be days 2 and 4 during Read and Discuss Weeks (listed as 2, 4 as due dates on Point Values for Assessments chart). Late DQ’s will be subject to the Axia College Late Policy deductions of 10% per day up to 4 days.

Substantive Participation during Read and Discuss Weeks Requirements

1.    The participation requirement for Axia students is that you must post at least two substantive notes during the designated weeks in the Discussion Threads for 4 different days out of 7 days each week (listed as 4/7 as due dates on Point Values for Assessments chart).

2.    The meaning of Substantive: For this class, substantive means that your message has substance and helps to further the discussion of course content. Substantive messages often include contributions of additional ideas and sources, insights or questions about classmates’ comments, connections to the course readings, or ways of applying the lessons from the course. As a rule of thumb, your substantive comments should be at least several sentences in length and range between 100 – 150 words as a

Page 14: Nutrition Syllabus

SyllabusSCI/241 Version 5

14

minimum (substantive participation will be graded on the sufficient content and word minimum).

3.    Short comments, such as “Good idea” or “I agree,” do not constitute substantive posts on their own. Neither do comments that are unrelated to the topics at hand (for example, “I saw that movie, too!”). If you say you agree about something, please explain why you agree, and add an additional insight or question.

4.    Tips for Creating Substantive Participation

Explain why you agree or disagree, and add some examples to support your belief. Relate your personal or work experiences to the topic at hand. Ask additional questions of your classmates. Make connections between the topics at hand and the readings in the text. Add ways you can apply the lessons from the class in your work and educational life. Your posts that you want to count toward your substantive participation grade should be a

minimum of 100 words.
