According to James Hiebert and Douglas Grouws (2007),
"Teaching consists of classroom interactions among teachers and students around content directed toward facilitating students’ achievement of learning goals" (p. 372).

Number Systems a number system is a set of objects (often
numbers), operations, and the rules governing those operations.
One example is our familiar real number system, which uses base ten numbers and such operations as addition and multiplication.
Another example is the binary number system, which uses binary addition and multiplication.

What is Number Sense?
Number sense basically is understanding numbers knowing how to write and represent numbers in
different ways; recognizing the quantity represented by numerals and
other number forms; discovering how a number relates to another number or
group of numbers. Number sense develops gradually and varies as a result of exploring numbers, visualizing them in a variety of contexts, and relating to them in different ways.

7
In a nutshell
Number sense is an awareness and understanding about what numbers are, their relationships, their magnitude the relative effect of operating on numbers, including the use of mental mathematics and estimation
EDTL 3701: Diagnosis and Remediation: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics at the Primary Level.
8
Number Sense includes
counting; representing numbers with manipulatives and models; understanding place value in the context of our base
10 number system; writing and recognizing numbers in different forms eg.
"4 + 1" or "7 - 2" comparing and ordering numbers-whole numbers,
fractions, decimals, and integers identifying a number by an attribute—such as odd or
even, prime or composite-or as a multiple or factor of another number.

9
Number Sense cont’dAs students work with numbers, they
gradually develop flexibility in thinking about numbers, which is a
distinguishing characteristic of number sense.

Good Number Sense Strategies cont’d Adequate attention to counting activities
throughout will help to assure both a good sense of magnitude (size) of numbers and a real readiness for all four basic operations.
(+ - / x) Use of language orally. Counting by ones should be followed by counting
back; skip counting by twos, fives, and tens; counting from a given starting number to a given target number by ones and by other numbers; counting on by tens from non-multiples of ten.

15
Good Number Sense Strategies cont’d As students are able to handle larger
numbers, place value and base-ten ideas are introduced through grouping activities.
Many of the models with which they are comfortable for single units can translate nicely into beginning base-ten model.
Enhanced models, along with the single digit units, are then used to represent two-digit numbers. As the next step, of course, groups of ten tens can be made to create hundreds.

Good Number Sense Strategies
Both concrete and rote counting are critically important in developing a sense of number. Adequate attention to counting activities at the early stages.
The regular and consistent use of concrete models for that development is essential. A variety of things to count, from poker chips to marbles to beans etc.
17
Why is Number Sense important?
It enables students to understand and express quantities in their world.
E.g. whole numbers can be used to describe the number of pupils in class
or the number of days to frolic
Decimal can be related to money.
fractional amounts describing ingredient measures or time increments,
negative quantities conveys temperatures below zero
percent amounts describing test scores or sale prices.
Number sense develops understanding of mathematical operations and
being able to estimate or make a meaningful interpretation of result.EDTL 3701: Diagnosis and Remediation: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics at the Primary

18
Why is number Sense important cont’d
Number sense develops as students understand the size of numbers, develop
multiple ways of thinking about and representing numbers, use numbers as
referents, and develop accurate perceptions about the effects of
operations on numbers (Sowder 1992).
