Parish Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a Roman Catholic Community of Faith founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1899. Called by God to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our celebration of the Word and Sacraments. Guided by the life of Christ, joined in Baptism, and inspired by the Grace of the Holy Spirit, we strive to embody the presence of God in the world today through worship, outward discipleship, and service. From the Pastor’s Desk Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: ‘He Cured Many who were Suffering’ Today is the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We read about the healing power of Jesus. “He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, no permitting them to speak because they knew him.” Jesus would want to do it again. We need to invite him, let him have access to our lives. we need to unlock our Hearts. (Rev. 3:20). We need a better world free of Covid19, a world from other diseases and pain, a world free from suffering and grief. While we are hoping for a better world, some people are questioning God’s ways, on the way things are moving in the world. Some even are questioning if there is a God at all. Some people are arguing, “If there is a God, how can He allow so much suffering.” However, people are entitled to their questions and opinions. However, these questions do not show a lack of knowledge or respect for God. It is part of human nature to cry at a time of misery and grief. In our first reading this Sunday (Job7:1-4, 6-7) we encounter a man who was also very upset with the way things were in the world and in his life. We have heard Job complaining about what was going on with him. Continued on page 3

Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Tema: “Curó a Muchas que estaban Sufriendo” Hoy es el Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Leemos sobre el poder sanador de Jesús. “Curó a muchos que estaban enfermos de diversas enfermedades, y expulsó a muchos demonios, sin permitirles hablar porque lo conocían”. Jesús querría hacerlo de nuevo. Necesitamos invitarlo, dejar que tenga acceso a nuestras vidas. Necesitamos desbloquear nuestros corazones. (Apocalipsis 3:20). Necesitamos un mundo mejor libre de Corvid19, un mundo de otras enfermedades y dolor, un mundo libre de sufrimiento y dolor. Mientras esperamos un mundo mejor, algunas personas cuestionan los caminos de Dios, sobre la forma en que se mueven las cosas en el mundo. Algunos incluso se preguntan si existe un Dios. Algunas personas están argumentando, “Si hay un Dios, ¿cómo puede permitir tanto sufrimiento?” Sin embargo, las personas tienen derecho a sus preguntas y opiniones. Sin embargo, estas preguntas no muestran una falta de conocimiento o respeto por Dios. Es parte de la naturaleza humana llorar en un momento de miseria y dolor. February 7, 2021 (Continúación de la página 1) Escúchalo una vez más lamentando su situación. “Es un esclavo que anhela la sombra, un asalariado que espera su salario. “Entonces, ¿me han asignado meses de miseria y me han asignado noches turbulentas…”? Shakespeare diría, “Ningún hombre soporta mejor el dolor”. En la situación de su vida, ¿se ha preguntado alguna vez por qué yo? ¿Alguna vez te has lastimado mucho o te has sorprendido por el sufrimiento de los demás? ¿Por qué Dios no hace nada en mi situación y la naturaleza de las injusticias en el mundo? Creo que puede. Ya lo ha hecho. Envió a Su Hijo en el tiempo señalado para salvar a la raza humana. Preste atención al evangelio de hoy. Escuchamos a Jesús curando a la suegra de Pedro, que tenía fiebre. Luego se nos dice, “Después de la puesta del sol, le llevaron a todos los enfermos y poseídos por los demonios. Todo el pueblo se agolpó alrededor de la puerta y curó a muchos que padecían enfermedades de una u otra clase ”. Jesús es un sanador. En él, Dios muestra su compasión por todos los que sufren. Aporta bienestar y consuelo a muchos de ellos. Mientras leemos los mensajes del evangelio, vemos a Jesús curando a los enfermos y curando a los poseídos. Él cura los cuerpos que sufren y los corazones quebrantados. Un paralítico, una mujer de luto por la muerte de su hijo, un soldado romano que lamenta ver enfermo a su sirviente, un padre que teme que su hija vaya a morir. A todos ellos, Jesús les brinda alivio y sanación de su dolor y sufrimiento. En nuestro mundo lleno de enfermedades e injusticias, Dios quiere usarnos como usó a su Hijo unigénito para ayudar a quienes tienen diversas necesidades. Ya en el Antiguo Testamento, los judíos habían llegado a conocer a Dios como un Dios que sana y consuela. Esto se muestra claramente en las oraciones que le hicieron a Dios. En el Salmo de hoy, se manifiesta, “El Señor ... sana a los quebrantados de corazón, venda sus heridas”. Jesús es quien, con mucho cuidado y gentileza, venda nuestras heridas, las heridas de nuestros cuerpos aplastados por el virus Corona y las heridas de nuestros corazones rotos. Como cristianos, abramos nuestros ojos de fe para ver estas curaciones y consuelos que Dios está haciendo en nuestras vidas todos los días. Hay otro tipo de curación que tiene lugar en nuestra vida y que es difícil de reconocer. Esta curación y consuelo continúan las veinticuatro horas del día. Es el alivio y el consuelo que las personas pueden sentir cuando vienen a Jesús y le llevan su sufrimiento y dolor. Esto está claro en el evangelio. Oímos que andaba curando a los que venían, vayan a Él, este mismo Jesús todavía está con nosotros. Él está aquí, verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía. Tiene el mismo poder hoy. No cambia. Todos los domingos, en la celebración de la Sagrada Eucaristía, Él espera que le llevemos todos los sufrimientos que están sufriendo nuestros cuerpos y nuestras almas. Los que no estamos bien, venimos a Jesús presente en la Eucaristía. Aquellos de nosotros que estamos molestos y preocupados, todos los que tenemos miedo, ansiosos por el futuro, los que nos sentimos culpables, los que lamentamos el pasado, venimos a Jesús en la fracción del pan. Creo que tenemos muchos problemas. Debemos permitir que Jesús nos toque en las celebraciones eucarísticas.

(Continued from page 1) Listen to him once more lamenting his situation. “He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. “So, have I been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me…”? Shakespeare would say, ‘No man bears sorrow better.’ In your life situation, have you ever asked yourself why me? Have you ever been very much hurt yourself, or shocked by the suffering of others? Why does God do not do anything in my situation and the nature of injustices in the world? I believe He can. He has done that already. He sent His Son on the appointed time to save the human race. Pay attention to the gospel of today. We hear Jesus curing the mother-in-law of Peter who was sick with a fever. Then we are told “After sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another”. Jesus is a healer. In him, God shows His compassion to all who are suffering. He brings well-being and comfort to so many of them. As we read the gospel messages, we see Jesus curing the sick and healing those who were Possessed. Suffering bodies and broken hearts are made well by Him. A paralytic, a woman mourning the death of her son, a Roman soldier sorry to see his servant sick, a father afraid that his daughter is going to die. To all of them, Jesus brings relief and healing from their grief and suffering. In our world full of sickness and injustices, God wants to use us as He used His only begotten Son to help those in various needs. Already in the Old Testament, the Jews had come to know God as a God who heals and comforts. This shows clearly in the prayers they made to God. In today’s Psalm, it is manifested, “The Lord… heals the broken-hearted, he binds up their wounds.” Jesus is the one who, with much care and gentleness, binds up our wounds- the wounds of our bodies crushed by Corona virus and the wounds of our broken-hearts. As Christians, let us open our eyes of faith to see these healings and comforts God is doing in our lives every day. There is another kind of healing that takes place in our life which is hard to recognize. This healing and comfort go on twenty-four hours a day. It is the relief and comfort that people can feel when they come to Jesus, and bring to Him their suffering and pain. This is clear in the gospel. We heard that he was going around curing those coming go to Him, this same Jesus is still with us. He is here, truly present in the Eucharist. He has the same power today. He does not change. Every Sunday in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist he is waiting for us to bring to Him all the sufferings our bodies and souls are undergoing. Those of us who are not well, come to Jesus present in the Eucharist. Those of us who are upset and worried, all us of who are afraid, anxious about the future, those of us who feel guilty, those of us who have regrets about the past come to Jesus in the breaking of bread. I think we have lots of issues. We should allow Jesus to touch us in the Eucharistic celebrations.
