Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time| Trigésimo Primer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Dear friends in Christ:

The month of November is a special time for

praying for the death. It is also a special time

for meditating on our own death. Here is an

article taken from “Real Life Ministry” which

very eloquently summarizes the Christian

meaning of suffering and death. “We live in the valley of

tears; or, as JRR Tolkien called life on earth, “the long

defeat.” But there’s something inherently different about the

way Christians experience the many defeats life throws at

us—both big and small. That difference is hope. Christian

hope is something more than “wishful thinking.”

The theological virtue of hope isn’t reaching out for

something in the future. It’s grasping ahold of our future

victory here and now. St. Paul lived his life with persecution

and death staring him in the face for years before he lost his

head on a chopping block in Rome. But he wrote,

“I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing

compared with the glory to be revealed in me.”

Because of that mindset, he could also write from his prison

cell, “We are more than conquerors because of him who has

loved us.” He didn’t walk through the trials of life as one

defeated, but as one who had already conquered the

world. When we walk through the valley of the shadow of

death with eyes fixed on our final victory, we light up that

valley with our faith, hope and love. That doesn’t make the

pains of this long defeat go away. But it does

change everything.”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

El mes de noviembre es dedicado a la oración por los fieles

difuntos, pero también es un mes dedicado a meditar en

nuestra propia muerte. Esta reflexión fue escrita por “Real

Life Ministry” y quiero compartirla con ustedes ya que

describe muy bien el significado del sufrimiento y muerte en

Cristo. “Vivimos en un valle de lágrimas, o como lo dijo JJR

Tolkien, vivimos en un “gran destierro.” Pero hay algo

diferente para quien vive una experiencia cristiana en este

mundo, y esa experiencia es basada en la esperanza. La

esperanza cristiana no es suerte, sino que es una virtud

teologal que nos enseña que la victoria no está en el futuro

sino en el aquí y ahora. St. Pablo vivió una vida de

persecución y la muerte siempre estuvo a su alrededor y

finalmente murió decapitado en Roma. Esto es lo que él

decía: “Considero los sufrimientos presentes como nada

comparados con la gloria que se me ha revelado.” Por eso

también pudo decir: “Somos triunfadores en todo por el

hecho que El (Jesús) me amo.” St. Pablo no actuaba como

alguien en destierro sino como alguien que ya había

triunfado. Cuando caminamos en este valle de lágrimas con

nuestra mirada en la victoria final, podemos iluminar este

mundo con nuestra fe, esperanza y caridad. Eso no quita

nuestro dolor en este mundo de destierro,

pero si lo cambia todo.”
