Lt. Governor’s Message

Hello Division 4,

If you may not know already from those

many updates I have been sending, my

name is Rohit Mathew and I am proud

to serve as your new Lieutenant

Governor for Division 4!

Along with me, we also have a new

Executive Assistant for Division 4,

Amanda Mandenberg!

In this newsletter, some charities will be

discussed and even activities that some

clubs in our division have been doing. Hopefully, this will help spark some ideas

for your club’s success!

Also, we will be discussing about our upcoming Leadership Training

Conference in March and update all clubs on the current status’s of

paperwork received.

As the Key Club Year progresses, I hope to receive more information about

each club, especially its events and meeting dates, so that I may be able to

attend them.

All in all, continue the great work and remember to fill out the formed needed,

as it is a given responsibility for all clubs! Feel free to

contact me anytime at [email protected]

with any questions, comments, or concerns!

Yours in Service,

New York District of Key Club International

2014-2015 Lt. Governor of Division 4

2014 Immediate Past Executive Assistant for Division 4

Greetings from our New Executive

Assistant of Division 4

Hi Division 4! My name is Amanda Madenberg

and I am your new Executive Assistant for the

remainder of the Key Club year.

I am a junior attending Great Neck South High

School. I have been very involved in Key Club

since the beginning of freshman year. As a

sophomore I was my club’s Event

Coordinator, and this year I am the Vice

President.

I am very happy to serve as your Executive Assistant. I will be helping

the Lieutenant Governor and I hope to meet many of you in the next

few months. My priority for this year is to involve all clubs in our division.

I would love to organize one or two events that allow all the key clubs

in our division to participate and contribute. Please let me know if you

have any suggestions for these events; I was thinking about a car wash

or a blood drive. It is also very important to attend the Divisional

meetings that our Lieutenant Governor will host. I hope to see at least

one person from every club in attendance at each meeting.

Additionally, it is very important to me to be in contact with all clubs in

our division. If you have not already done so, please send us your

President’s information.

I am very approachable—please don’t hesitate to offer ideas or ask

any questions! My email is [email protected].

A Message from our International Trustee, Shane Meyers

Hello, Division 4 Key Clubbers,

I’m Shane Meyers and I’m ecstatic to serve as your International Trustee this Key

Club year! I can’t wait to work alongside all of you in order to improve your homes,

schools, and communities.

Don’t let my officer title intimidate you. I’m just like any other high school

student in Key Club: I love naps, binge watching Netflix, and serving my community.

I currently attend Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida where I

major in communications.

The job of an International Trustee is ultimately to link the districts to Key Club

International, but during my term, I’d like to go one step further and work alongside

all of my assigned districts in order to facilitate as much community service as

possible. When it really comes down to it, our organization revolves around service

and if I’m not encouraging this service in some way, shape, or form, then I don’t

deserve the position of International Trustee. For this reason, I’m completely open to

communicating with anyone in Key Club. If you ever need to talk to someone about

anything Key Club, don’t hesitate to send me an email, a Facebook message, or

even a text. By reaching out to me, you allow me to aid your district to the best of

my ability!

Although I’d like to help facilitate as much service as possible, people like Rohit

actually have the most influence over the amount of service that members of Key

Club complete each year. When all the levels of Key Club International work

together, something beautiful happens. When International creates initiatives like

the Eliminate Project, District Governor Jacob guides the district effectively, and your

Lieutenant Governor cares as much as all the New York Lieutenant Governors do,

you have the opportunity to make that ‘something

beautiful’ happen. You have the perfect storm for

an effective year of service in your division; you, the

club member, have the power to inspire more

service than ever before. Harness this power and

let it guide you in a year full of service.

Even though I won’t get to meet a lot of you

in person this year, you should know that the

difference you make in your communities inspires

me every day. Thank you for all you do! Here’s to a

productive, service-filled year!

International and District Projects

Each year, the New York district board endorses a set amount of charities and

organizations that they believe are important and represent our values. All district

projects make up the fundraising component of our district’s set of projects for

the service year.

The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis and Key

Club have partnered up with UNICEF to

ELIMINATE maternal and neonatal

tetanus. This disease takes up the lives

of nearly 60,000 babies and mothers

EVERY YEAR. By 2015, Kiwanis and Key

Club hopes to raise $110 Million for the

ELMINATE Project. All for one and one

for all, we can fight this disease and wipe it away from this earth!

Make-A-Wish Foundation: This

foundation gives those children,

who are diagnosed with life-

threatening illnesses, a wish come

true. This organization helps in

changing the lives of children all

over the globe.

Kamp Kiwanis: Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at

providing fun, physical exercise and

adventure. It strives to afford opportunities

to participate in a creative outdoor group

experience in a democratic setting and

develop characteristics of leadership and

fair play.

7

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center: The Kiwanis

Pediatric Trauma Center is intended to help treat

youngsters. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital affiliation that was

made to give the funds and staff important to make

an injury focus with broad medicinal aid and

security. Kiwanis serves to give treatment and helps

to meet the needs of families with children suffering

from injury and/or trauma.

Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation:

Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by

the deer tick. It is a scary possibility to consider for New York

State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the

summer months. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many

ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other

symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood

swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. This

foundation helps to pay for medical treatment for children

with this disease.

St. Jude Children’s Hospital: The mission of St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures,

and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic

diseases through research and treatment.

Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny

Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on

race, religion or a family's ability to pay. St. Jude is

unlike any other pediatric treatment and research

facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats

children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient

care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today's most gifted researchers

are able to do science more quickly.

North Shore High School

Pumpkin Picking

The North Shore key Club is always on hand to assist the

United Methodist Church in Sea Cliff with an annual

fundraiser for Navaho Indians. The event takes place in

October with a truck full of pumpkins arriving in the parking

lot. Key Clubbers and numerous community groups assist with

unloading over 3000 pumpkins to be sold and the profits

donated to Navaho Indians. Pictured are the Key Clubbers

with smiles galore as they assist with this event.

Breast Cancer Walk

On October 19th, the annual Breast Cancer

Awareness Walk was held at Jones Beach. Many key

clubbers attended this walk adorned in every shade

of pink possible. It was hard to stay together after

arriving at the walk because hundreds of other

attendees were walking with us simultaneously. From

pink face paint to pink sweatshirts to pink bagels,

walkers created an unparalleled sea of pink for this

event. The enthusiasm was palpable as all people

walked as a united force in their quest to combat

and eliminate the danger of breast cancer. Breast

cancer had impacted every attendee at that walk,

whether directly or indirectly. Many teams walked in memoriam of a lost loved one, in support

of a current fighter, or in celebration of a survivor. Regardless of the specific reason, every

person walked to achieve the same goal: raising money to stimulate breast cancer research

and move us closer to finding a cure. All walkers were overwhelmed by a sense of solidarity

and strength as they made strides against breast cancer.

The K Family Joins Hands At The Sea Cliff Mini Mart

The Sea Cliff Mini Mart is sponsored by the North Shore

Kiwanis Club and the North Shore Key Club is always on

hand for this event to sell their famous Otis Spunkmeyer

cookies made to order. The day was beautiful, the

enthusiasm was high and the key Clubbers sold 1440

cookies in 4 hours. Pictured are the key club bakers

very proud of their accomplishment!!!

Service Spotlights

Sewanhaka High School

Lupus Walk

Sewanhaka Key Clubbers gathered at Eisenhower Park on October 19th for the annual lupus

walk. We raised $150 to donate to this amazing effort. The students who attended the walk

received a pin to wear proudly. Overall, the turnout was great and this was a very successful

event.

Make A Wish and Parent Teacher Conference

During the Parent Teacher Conference on November 3rd, Sewanhaka’s Key Club hosted a

bake sale, the proceeds of which were be donated to the Make A Wish Foundation to help

grant wishes to children with cancer. The total amount of money raised was approximately

$260. Besides helping out with the bake sale and bringing food in, students were escorts for

parents who needed assistance during the conference. Overall, the bake sale was a great

success!

UNICEF Trick or Treat

The orange Halloween themed boxes that Sewanhaka students sported throughout October

and early November were for UNICEF. The total amount of money that the Sewanhaka Key

Club raised for this worthy cause is approximately $250. The money raised will help provide

basic necessities to children who need more than candy. Malnourished children in

underdeveloped countries are provided with safe drinking water, food, and vaccinations for

diseases such as malaria.

Great Neck South High School

Great Neck South Key Club is dedicated to helping out the

community. We started off the school year with our

Homecoming Dance and Carnival. Our members did an

unbelievable job setting up decorations, manning the game

booths, and raising over 2000 dollars for charity!

October began with our Fall Blood Drive in partnership with

the Red Cross. Members not only volunteered during their

free periods to help donors, but also donated blood

themselves. Our members also did a great job with

fundraising for "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" boxes. We raised

over 400 dollars.

November was dedicated to the K.C school supply drive in

partnership with St. Mary's Children Hospital. Our goal was to

raise more than 200 items of supplies and we exceeded that.

These supplies will be going to children who cannot afford

school supplies. In past years they have been so thankful for

our help.

This December our members are volunteering as bell ringers

for The Salvation Army in front of the local Macy's. Along with

that we will be making cards for Addie Fausett, a 6 year old

who will most likely be celebrating her last Christmas this year

due to a rare atrophy of her brain. Her parents came out and

mentioned how much she loves receiving cards so we will be

writing out cards for her at this weeks meeting.

We are very excited to continue on with our Key Club duties

and make the community a better place for all.

MORE SCHOOLS SHOULD WRITE A SERVICE SPOTLIGHT AS IT IS A

GREAT WAY FOR RECOGNITION AND TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT

OTHER KEY CLUBS HAVE BEEN DOING!!!

To those who do not know what a service spotlight is, it is just a

brief article about an event or project written by any member of

the club.

Leadership Training Conference and International Convention

Our 67th Annual Leadership Training Conference will be taking place at our usual

venue, The Desmond Hotel. This year, the New York District Key Club has planned

many fun service projects and activities to do! There will be activities such as

Make a Fit, Networking, and much

more!!! In addition to all the fun

activities, we will also be bringing back

Play Fair! This year’s LTC will be held from

March 27-29, so I hope to see all schools

attend this awesome conference! This

conference won’t be a success without

you!!!

In addition to out LTC, Key Club

international will be hosting it’s

annual International Convention

(ICON) from June 25-28, 2015!

This year, ICON will be held in

the Key Club International

Headquarters' city, Indianapolis.

Indiana. Now why go to the

convention??? For one, it’s the

biggest event of the Key Club

year! Imagine celebrating the

amazing things Key Club does

with more than 1,600 Key Clubbers from all across the

United States, Canada and the Caribbean! That’s

some diversity! In addition, we will also be celebrating

100 years of Kiwanis! Indeed we have gone a long

way, so it’s now time for a bit more fun! If your schools

is interested, visit www.keyclub.org/events/convention

for more information or just contact Rohit at

[email protected].

12

Divisional We need host schools for some of our upcoming divisionals! We are looking

for hosts for the month of January and February! If interested in hosting a

divisional, please contact Rohit at [email protected]. Also as a

note, our first divisional is on Tuesday, December 16th at New Hyde Park

Memorial at 6:45 PM.

Major Emphasis Program

What is ELIMINATE?

The ELIMINATE Projects is a aimed to wipe out a very dangerous

known as maternal or neonatal tetanus. Kiwanis, as well as Key Club,

are working together with UNICEF to combat this disease throughout

the world, but predominantly in Central Africa and South Asia.

What is being done?

Currently there are UNICEF workers

around the globe continuing to fight

this. Currently, we have ELIMINATED

MNT from nearly 15 countries and

there are another 24 to go.

How can you help?

Well, there are many things you can do. For one, the Trick or Treat

project, which I hope many schools have participated in, will help

this cause. Other things that you can do is host fundraisers such as a

bake sale, hot chocolate sale, or even a movie night!
