After going on the first OTBP trip to Meijer Gardens, Grand Rapids, MI, to view the Chihuly exhibit, I am no longer surprised to learn that Meijer Gardens made the Forbes’ list of the “50 places to visit before you die!” It was fabulous …with or without Chihuly’s spectacular glass sculpture. If I had had any idea how much I would enjoy being President of Ladies of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College, I would have done it sooner in my life. I have a great supporting cast of officers and appointed chairs. However, I do have a nagging concern in my job as President. We currently have no President-elect. In the past, the Program Chair and President-elect positions were linked, making the Presidency a 3-year commitment. The first year was dedicated to coordination of a year’s program as president elect. The second year was for acting as President of the organization, and the third year the Past-president led the search committee for the next year’s slate of officers. In the recent past, realizing that most of us are wary of making a 3 year commitment, the 3 jobs were separated. This has made the job of President much less complicated but somehow has not made the job of finding a President - elect any easier. Over the last 10 years we have appreciated the service of presidents who worked full time, presidents with young children, some who had been here just a few years, and some who were approaching 80 years of age. In all cases the membership rallied round to assist the president to achieve the goals of the organization. No person has ever been asked to assume the presidency of the organization for more than one year. LND/SMC provides a valuable service to the University with outreach to newcomers and visitors, provides a continuing link to the University for our retirees, provides the resources for operation of an awesome playgroup, and provides an opportunity for our members to network with interesting women at all ages and stages of life. If you are at a point in your life where you can see your way clear to devote a few hours a week to LND/SMC, I would encourage you to consider accepting the position of President or Program Chair for next year. Please contact me <juliesilliman@yahoo. com> to find out more about one of these truly fulfilling and rewarding opportunities. Another endeavor that I wish to discuss with all of you is our ability to provide meals for new mothers and their families in our LND/ SMC community. I have a very real sense of the importance of these meals to new moms. When my youngest son was born (almost 12 years ago), at the tail end of our last severe blizzard, I spent most of the first ten days of his life in Indianapolis as he underwent open-heart surgery to repair his transposed major arteries. When we returned to South Bend, he was sore and cranky. I was tired and worn out. There was no family member who could travel to our aid. Thankfully, one of the mothers with a child in my older son’s class “rallied the troops” and arranged for two weeks of meals for us. I will never forget how comforting it felt to receive some warm meals along with the prayers and support of these friends and neighbors. From the President . . .

The first year was dedicated to coordination of a year’s program as president elect. The second year was for acting as President of the organization, and the third year the Past-president led the search committee for the next year’s slate of officers. Saint Mary’s College is the new home for a reproduction of the Saint John’s Bible. St. John’s Abbey and University commissioned calligrapher, Donald Jackson, to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible. This Bible is joining today’s technology and vision with ancient Benedictine tradition in bring-ing the Word of God to today’s people After being blessed at the College’s opening Mass, a reproduction of the Bible was presented to the Cushwa-Leighton Library, where it will be displayed permanently. SMC’s President Carol Ann Mooney said: “It’s a physical treasure, its beauty, its craftsmanship,” but because it’s also a book containing the Word of God, it’s so appropriate for it to have a home at Saint Mary’s.” The Bible, which is the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible, was a gift from a 1974 graduate of the College. The book is composed of seven volumes. The other three volumes will be presented after they are completed.

“Off the Beaten Path” Join the Ladies as we tour the Cushwa-Leighton Library and view the new Saint John’s Bible on the campus of Saint Mary’s College, Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at 10:00 am. Robert Hohl of SMC will conduct the tour. Attendance is limited to 20. We will enjoy lunch at a local eatery after the tour. Please contact Jennifer Velasco <[email protected]>, or at 247-0601, if you are interest-ed in attending or would like more informa-tion. (See p. 6 for further information about St. Margaret’s House Luncheon at 11:30 am at Hilton Garden Inn.)

“Off the Beaten Path” All LND/SMC members and guests are invited to treat them-selves to an “Upscale Day in Downtown Chicago,” on Wednes-day, November 10, 2010. Please join us as we travel by South Shore to downtown Chicago. The cost of the South Shore train is ap-proximately $22.00 RT ($10.75 for seniors!) Meet at the station at 8:20 am est, pur-chase tickets and depart on the 8:48 EST am train. After taking the bus up Michigan Ave. ($2), enjoy lunch at the Signature Room at the John Hancock Building on Chicago’s Gold Coast. Located atop the John Hancock Center, The Signature Room at the 95th® offers diners exquisite food, superb service, and a dazzling skyline view. The elegant wood de-signs and art deco interior create an inviting and intimate atmosphere, while the floor-to-ceiling windows exhibit the stunning Chicago skyline and a 360° degree views of the entire city. The Signa-ture Lunch Buffet will be available ($20.00) in ad-dition to the à la carte lunch menu (average $10.00 to $15.00 for most entrees). After lunch there will be time to visit the neigh-boring Water Tower Place and shop for awhile. Travel to visit the Merchandise Mart to view this year’s Dream Home will be by taxi. See the end-less possibilities for elegant living in a home that’s the ultimate in sophistication, comfort and eco-smart. the moNthLy Craft Night: There was a nice turn out for the first craft night of the year where we explored wet fold origami. The next craft night will be Thursday, December 2, 2010. We will be making a very im-pressive papercraft Christmas decoration The group meets at 7:30 Pm at the home of Kat Caine. Please let her know of your interest either by telephone (574-303-2480) or email <[email protected]>. Future crafts include a piece of collage art in early February and Jewelry / Bead making in April. More details will follow in future news-letters. All crafters are welcome at these events. Please feel free to bring your own projects to work on if you would prefer.

The tennis group has moved indoors to the Eck Pavilion for the cold weather months. We play on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 - 9 am. New players are always welcome. If you or someone you know would be interested in playing ten-nis, please contact Kate Kelly at (574) 217-8982 or <[email protected]> for more in-formation or to sign-up.

The Creative Cooking special interest group got off to a healthy start with a salad dinner in October. There were a few new people. All interested LND/SMC members are still welcome to come. even if you missed the first dinner. On November 9, 2010, Nancy Kilpatrick will host the meeting at her home for a dinner involving cooking with parchment and foil. There should be many good hints. Perhaps we each will learn a new technique. On December 7, 2010, (first Tuesday instead of second) a dinner will be at Nancy McAdams’ home. We will enjoy a Moroccan meal. I think we will definitely all try some new food that night! Then, to start off 2011, our January 18, 2011, meeting will be a Polish/Hungarian dinner at Deb Bernhard’s home. All these dinners begin at 7:00 Pm. An rsvp is required, so the hostess knows how many plates to set. Email Val at <[email protected]> if you are interested in any of these delicious offerings.

Irene Leahy is the discussion leader for Irish-born, English novelist Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September. The discussion will be at the home of Jen Lindley (233 S. Hawthorne Dr., SB) on Thurs-day, November 4, 2010. Group Chair Christine Costello will lead the discussion of A Clockwork

Orange by Anthony Burgess at the home of Brigid Edmonds (53254 Braken Fern Dr., SB) on Thursday, December 2, 2010. In preparing for 2011, you might wish to start reading Ru-dyard Kipling’s Kim. Josephine Ford (18710 Kintz Dr. SB) will be the host and Kathy Scheidt will handle the discus-

sion. If you have read the book or you just wish to hear the discussion, you are welcome to come. Please let the group chair know if you are not a regular. You can contact Christine Costello at 232-6579 or <[email protected]>

Sheila Marshall is both host as well as discussion leader for the Monday, No-vember 8, 2010 for Betty Smith’s Joy in the Morning. Plan on meeting at Sue Uhran’s home to discuss Edward Morais’s The Hun-dred Foot Journey. The dis-cussion leader is not yet as-signed. “From

kitchens in Mumbai to London, the French Alps and finally Paris, this novel explores the mysteries of food, family and destiny.” Contact Sheila at <[email protected]> or 291-2364 for directions to the host’s home.

playgroup has grown along with our ability to identify first time mothers who would be new to the playgroup. Therefore, there are many more opportunities to provide this service in a given year. Kate Mannor is using the wonders of technology to provide an easy way for people to sign up for these meals as they are needed. Please contact Kate at < [email protected]>, If you are able to provide one or two meals a year to a family. I look forward to seeing many of you at one of our upcoming events. Come to our Holiday Tea when new Life Members are recognized. It is always a pleasant and entertaining event. In November I will be leading the (hopefully warm and wonderful) trip to the Dream Home at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. I wish you peace as we approach another Holiday Season. Thank you so much for all that you contribute to this organization, the University and College. Julie Silliman

Helen Fitzgerald Donovan, 87, died peacefully at Morningside Nursing Home in South Bend, IN. Helen was born in Cambridge, Mass. In December 1950 she married Mortimer J. Donovan, who was on the English faculty of the University of Notre Dame. He preceded her in death in 1981 as did their son, Joe, in 1998. Helen is survived by her children: Anne McGraw of South Bend, John of Galveston, TX, Elizabeth Peralta (Paul) of Charlotte, NC, James of Chicago and Bernard of Belleville, MI and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Kevin Fitzgerald (Joan) of Cambridge, MA. Helen was a tutor in the Chapter One program of the South Bend Community School Corporation for many years and a faithful volunteer at St. Margaret’s House. She was well loved and will be missed by all who knew her. The succinct sayings that Helen dealt out to her children and grandchildren will live in their memories. “Healthy birds fly away” is one of the gifts she left them, encouraging them to build and live their own lives. Her granddaughter, Katie Peralta, shared her memories at Helen’s funeral Mass, held at St. Joseph Church, South Bend. Condolences may be sent to <http://www.mcgannhay.com>www.mcgannhay.com

From the reCording seCretary…Summary of Board Meeting

October 10, 2010

The board discussed the Scholarship Luncheon which will be held at the end of January, 2011. The board is in the process of finding a speak-er for the luncheon. The board also continues to plan the scholarship fundraiser that is held at the Hammes Bookstore in the spring. Other fundraising ideas were discussed, and the board is considering having a “Ladies” Night Out and talked about “In Memoriam” and “In Remem-brance” donation cards. The program co-chairs are making plans for the Spring Fashion Show and are considering forming a planning com-mittee. The minutes from the last board meeting were revised and approved. The treasurer’s report was reviewed. The circulation dates of the newsletter were confirmed as well. Chang-es to the LND/SMC website were discussed. Membership numbers were also reviewed. (See Membership for latest membership numbers.) As of October 7, 2010, there are 8 new members, 74 renewing members, and 144 Life Members.

We need you!Are you knowledgeable about places in our community that welcome and train volunteers? We could use you to research these places and inform the Ladies of these needs as well as provide us with the necessary information. The latter you would do by writing an article for each of the newletters. Call Julie Silliman 272-2756, to discuss this possibility.

Help Wanted

After the tour of the St. John’s Bible at SMC on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, consider at-tending a luncheon supporting the women of St. Margaret’s House at the Hilton Garden Inn, located on Douglas Road at Saint Mary’s Col-lege. This benefit celebrates 20 years of creating community as the women share their stories of strength, courage and hope. A silent art auction begins at 11:00 am with lunch served at 11:30 am. The cost is $35. (RSVP by November 8, 2010.) Contributions to SMH are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. If you wish to sit with other LND/SMC members, contact Mary Lou Derwent, 277-1996 or <[email protected]> by 11/08/10. One of the projects run by SMH is making hand painted silk scarves. These are beautiful and make wonderful gifts. All proceeds benefit SMH programs.

The Newcomers Committee hosted a successful “Meet and Greet” event on Oct. 6, 2010. About a dozen members and newcomers met in the Great Hall of the Hesburgh Center to chat and enjoy dessert. (We even had a Kellogg Institute fellow from Africa join us for a few minutes. He figured out quickly that our gathering was intended for females!) It was a lovely Fall evening. The English Conversation Group held its first meeting on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at the Beichner Center. Brigid Edmonds and Nancy McAdams met with 6 women from Russia, Poland, Serbiaand Chile who are eager to improve their English skills. They were all past the beginner level, so Brigid and Nancy will have to plan some advanced topics for discussion. Anyone who wishes to join the group is welcome. We can split the group into ability levels as the group grows.

Which do you wish to be? Choose one: p Active Old p Rocking Chair Old. As is customary at the LND/SMC Opening Re-ception each September, after the Presidents of both SMC and UND have spoken, the President of LND/SMC invites all of the women newcomers or visitors to introduce themselves. When Catha-rine Stewart-Roache introduced herself as a visi-tor and a 1962 M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching) graduate in Art from the University, I was very in-terested. It was the same year that I had received a M.S. in mathematics at Notre Dame. While we did not know each other during that time, once we engaged in conversation, we talked about life as a female stu-dent in those “olden days” at the University. Our memories were similar… there were very, very, very few women’s restrooms! They were next to department offices. Since September I have had occasion to speak with Catharine and wish to share with you a very inter-esting woman, a woman in charge of her own life. a woman worthy of her Notre Dame education. Catharine was born in Oklahoma and later moved to Ft. Worth, TX with her parents and two siblings. Later a younger brother was born there. Her mother came from the Cajun region of Louisi-ana. She was French, Catholic and bilingual. Her father was a late convert to Catholicism, went to Oklahoma University but did not graduate. He believed firmly in education. He also had “long-lived” genes and lived to be 97. Her grandmère lived to be 100 and two aunts were 98 and 102. Catharine received her undergraduate education in art at Rosary College, River Forest, IL, a Domin-ican women’s college. As an artist she was very interested in coming to Notre Dame as she wished to study with the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Unfor-tunately, Mestrovic died in January 1962. Through the last 50+ years Catharine has con-tinued studying. She received a masters in coun-seling from Webster University and a Doctorate in Ministry from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. The latter required approximately 40 of hours of reading prior to an intense one-week “semester” in New Mexico after which she had to design ministry projects that she would carry out. She was the first female Eucharistic minister

in New Mexico. In her 40’s she received funding from the Na-tional Institute of Mental Health to train people to work with the elderly. She herself was a chap-lain in a non-denominational hospital as well as in a nursing home. She told me that when she was young she was overweight … fat to be precise. During her five pregnancies she worked hard to regain normal weight but with not much success.

While working in the nurs-ing home she recognized that women were there often due to lack of physical activ-ity that led to disabilities and heart disease. In her 50’s, af-ter making some changes to her own lifestyle, she could say for the first time: “I’m an athlete!” She was no longer the fat little girl she once was. She became strong and active

participating in Senior Olympics in cycling and racquetball and in her 60s took up sprint triath-lons, winning in her age group. In 1998, 2007, and 2010 Catharine went on a “Se-mester at Sea” as a Lifelong Learner. In 2007 she met Barbara Yarnell in the fitness room of the ship. “The ship had about 600 twenty year olds. We were much older.” Barbara was a nutritionist, physical therapist and strength coach. By that time in her life Catharine was participating in various aero-bic exercises, yoga, and paying dutiful attention to her flexibility and balance. Together these women shared that there appeared to be no fitness books addressed to the needs of older women. They de-cided to write one and accomplished the feat. You will find Women to Women: A Handbook for Active Aging by Stewart-Roache and Yarnell at Amazon.com. In looking through this book I see help in not disrespecting our bodies and at the same time strengthening what we have… such as our quads so that we are able to get in and out of cars and chairs. “The secret to being an active older wom-an,” says Catharine, “is finally knowing what you can and cannot do and in respecting this knowl-edge. Take your choice. Do you wish to be active old or rocking chair old? Catharine and Barbara’s book helps women make the decision.

Madison Primary, a K-4 school within the South Bend Community School Corporation, located near Leeper Park, behind Memorial Hospital, is in need of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to work with small groups of children (6-9 students) on basic skills in reading, math, and language arts each morning. All materials will be provided for volunteers based on weekly assessments. There are two time periods when volunteers are needed:8:30 – 9:00 am for the 2nd – 4th grades and/or9:00 – 9:30 am for the K to 1st graders The key is that these children need ongoing help and support. Volunteers can choose the most convenient day and time. If you want to make a difference in South Bend’s public schools, this small investment of your time will make all of the difference in the lives of these worthy children. If you would like to become involved, or if you have additional questions, please contact Pam Burish, <[email protected]>.

What exactly is an “Evening With Friends” Event? Who goes? Do I need a reservation?

For the past several years LND/SMC has hosted informal get-togethers that we have termed “An Evening With Friends.” It is a non-structured evening of coffee and conversation. We generally hold these events at one of two local coffee houses. Lula’s Cafe on the corner of State Road 23 and Edison Rd. was the location of our first meeting on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. The second meeting was at the Chocolate Cafe on Michigan Street in Downtown South Bend on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. We meet from 7 - 10 Pm, but please feel free to arrive later or leave earlier, if that would be more convenient for your schedule. We alternate between Lula’s and the Chocolate Cafe. These gatherings are meant to be a “Ladies Night Out” and are a chance to form some friendships with women in the Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s community. No RSVPs are required. Just come. We hope to see you there!

From the membershiP Co- Chairs . . . Thank you to all who have joined LND/SMC this year. As of October 21, 2010, we have a total of 254 members, including 14 new members, 144 Life Members and 96 renewing members. Thank you to all who made a donation to our Scholarship Funds at Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s. Our members have donated $760 to the Notre Dame Fund and $560 to the Saint Mary’s Fund this year. This money is in addition to the amount raised each year by the Scholarship Benefit. The recipients of our scholarships will be very grateful. Also, donations from Life Members to LND/SMC totaled $1,235 this year. Thank you for your generous contributions which help us not only print and mail the newsletters and the yearbook by also run our numerous programs. Welcome to all our New Members.
