LEADERSHIP COUNCIL NOTES

NOVEMBER LEADERSHIP COUNCIL NOTES

Our building project is nearing the end of its design/preparation phase and approaching the actual building/construction phase. On November 8th we had a very well attended congregational forum to explain the various cost estimates that we have been given. Two options were presented for discussion. A parking lot expansion and fellowship hall only, or the parking lot, fellowship hall, and expanded office facilities. The overwhelming majority encouraged us to go for the complete package. The building committee will now ask the contractor to bid out the various parts of the project and present us with a final price quote and timetable.

Since the building project cost estimate is around $1.6 million, and we only have $1.1 million in pledges to date, the capital campaign committee will meet in December to explore avenues to close that gap.

As you read this newsletter, the Advent season will be underway. The hanging of the greens took place on November 28th; and the Jesse tree has been planted. Many opportunities for you to participate in celebrating Christ’s birth will take place throughout the month of December.

On November 11th, we welcomed Gail Koerner to our staff as the new parish administrator. She is anxiously looking forward to meeting everyone in the congregation; and eager to work with the people of Peace to make it a better place as we provide our services for Christ. Stop by and introduce yourself to Gail and to ask how you can help with the many tasks that take place at Peace.

In November, the live streaming of the 9:30 AM worship service went on line. I hope that everyone will check it out and suggest to your friends up north, and those who are homebound, to tune in and witness the great worship experience that we enjoy every week.

On December 13th, following the 9:30 worship service, we will conduct the first part or our two part annual congregational meeting. The main agenda items for this meeting will be the first reading and vote on a revised constitution and the election of new leadership council members for 2016. You can read the background information of these four individuals elsewhere in this newsletter.

As a new year approaches we look forward to participating in the many small group gatherings and the return of our seasonal pastor, Pr. Mick and his wife Judy.

May I be the first to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Yours in Christ,

Jim Krueger

Dear Friends in Christ,

A facet of the church that I recently recognized is the legacy of each generation that the next one uses as a foundation for their ministry and mission. This

struck me when I realized that the Haiti Mission Team will be using for the January 2016 roof project the generator that we purchased several years ago for Faith Lutheran Church in Fonds de Negri, Haiti. Having the generator—and Brian Adams has seen on his exploratory trip that it remains in good working condition—will allow power tools to be used, which will expedite the demolition and reconstruction of the roof. Present day work builds on yesterday’s labors and faith in Christ.

Paul when writing to the Christians in Corinth exclaimed:

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ; and him crucified… so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:2-5)

It is such a joy to look at the plans for our ministry and mission in the building plans. I was pleased at the forum on November 8th to hear the questions and thoughts that people are wondering how the building will be utilized and financed. We have faced the same questions in the past and Christ has always led us through them to a stronger place as a congregation. I know that the Leadership Council, staff, Building Committee and Capital Campaign Team will dedicate the time to lead us in this matter to the glory of God. That is the legacy of the planters of our congregation, and those before them, that we continue to be blessed by their witness. We will, likewise, provide a positive foundation for future generations who are known to God.

I always love to state that “God is doing great things in our midst” at Peace. I know that the gift of faith will continue to bless us in beautiful ways at Christmas and

throughout this coming season!

In Christ,

Pastor Walter

Congregational Meeting

December 13, 2015

The meeting has two reasons: election of nominees to the 2016 Leadership Council and first vote on revisions to the Constitution of the Congregation.

The nominees for Leadership Council are: Lori Blass-Adams, Jeff Carter, Grant Ellingson, and John Warner. Their photos and bios are on page 11.

Church Constitution Update

As a congregation, we work together on our policy with the Florida

Bahamas Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The

church constitution serves as the basic governing document for our

church. When the ELCA Churchwide Assembly meets, changes to the

constitution for congregations are adopted. The congregation then has the

responsibility to update their local constitution. Our Constitution was last updated in 2007. During

the recent summer meetings, the Leadership Council worked with our synod staff on bringing our

constitution up to date.

Our Constitution requires that the changes to it be voted on at two congregational meetings. Thus,

the first vote will be Sunday December 13th at the congregational meeting and the second one will

be January 31st as a part of our annual meeting.

The Leadership Council discussed the changes to the Constitution to be in several areas:

The “updating” our constitution involved revising our earlier document with changes approved

by the previous ELCA Churchwide Assemblies.

The sanctioning of utilizing electronic means for Leadership Council meetings.

The Synodical Bishop is to be consulted in a timely manner regarding significant congregational

issues.

Michelle Smyth, Publications Secretary of our church, developed a document in which one can

compare the 2007 document and the proposed changes. The Proposed Church Constitution, to be

acted on at the December 13th and January 31st congregational meetings, is available in the

“Document” section of our church website: www.peaceftmyers.com. Printed copies of both

documents can be requested by contacting the Parish Administrator.

Notes Regarding Financial Performance for the Month

October 31, 2015

With the end of October, it means the fiscal year has two months remaining. The ten months

to date have resulted in some improvement over what we saw at the end of September. Revenue

for the ten months totals $406,132 while expenses for the ten months at $417,247 resulting in

expenses exceeding revenues by $11,115. Last year for the ten months revenues totaled $437,820

and expenses were $404,573 resulting in revenues exceeding expenses by $33,247.

In October, revenues exceeded expenses by $6,015. Our budget for October had revenues

exceeding expenses by $6,250 so our results for the month were within $235 of the budget.

Revenues for October 2015 were $43,126 against budgeted revenue of $44,000. Expenses for

the month were $37,111 which were $639 less than budget. Last year in October expenses

exceeded revenues by $1,583.

The cash position continues to be strong driven by pledge payments on the campaign. At the

end of October, the cash balance is $565,790 of which $511,499 are campaign funds which we

have invested in the ELCA Mission Investment Fund. However, this cash position of $54,291 is

$33,995 less than the balance at the start of year due to expenses exceeding revenues and asset

additions during the first ten months.

We have two months remaining in the fiscal year. We need your help in seeing that we finish the

year strong. For the year, we need $158,000 in November and December to meet our budgeted

income. Thank you for you continued support of the mission of Peace Lutheran Church.

Ah, December. Snow? Palm Trees? Holiday Pink Flamingos? Red Noses on a blue Reindeer?

Vocalists on the radio—many of whom you ONLY hear in December. Vic Damone. Al Martino. Dean Martin. Eydie and Steve......Mitch Miller's Chorus, and some guy singing about the Christmas donkey in Italy. So, nostalgia it is this month. Oh yes, don't forget the hippopotamus.

On December 13th in the evening, I have the privilege of being the guest organist at Light House Boca Grande UMC for a presentation of “ A Festival of Lessons and Carols”. This service was created by Archbishop Benson for use in the Cathedral at Truro. In 1918,it was simplified, (!?) for use in King's College Chapel, Cambridge. It has long teeth and a few gray hairs. Yet, it is as timeless as the story it tells. Much like the Narrative Lectionary we use every Sunday, in nine lessons, we go from Adam and Eve to John unfolding the mystery that is the Incarnation, In the beginning was the Word.....

Somewhere around 1970, my church was presented with a Zimbelstern. It was dedicated and used for the Lessons and Carols that Christmas Eve. I was sorely disappointed that I wasn't going to get to play during that extended prelude and get to use it. But, finding that bulletin did ring another bell in my head, so to speak. That year, I was selected to read the first of the nine lessons, the Genesis lesson about Eden and serpent's heads and rebellion and so on. While the progression of readers always started young and ended with the Senior Pastor, looking back, I often wonder if I was being taught a lesson about rebellion as I was on the cusp of those wonderful teenage years where humans exhibit great behavior and obedience to all things having to do with authority and parents. Or not. (Yes, I shall indeed ask my teacher about that and he will be brutally honest with me, or he will spare my feelings and lie like a rug. Both options are quite fine with me.)

So, what memory of Advent or Christmas sticks with you as a turning point in your life? At the moment this happened, I KNEW I did not want to make a living speaking in front of people. And I learned that my desire to play the organ was a rather permanent goal. Not a get rich quick or ever scheme but a good one for me. Hey Mom and Dad, I finally stuck with something-----

And now it is your turn. Some gifts of questions selected especially for you.

If the Angel Gabriel came from heaven to tell you what he told Mary, what would you have done?

If the Angels popped into your midnight sky and said, GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO, how would you respond? (Did they truly sing in Latin?)

If three guys on camels and a star appeared and asked for the King, what would you answer?

Here is the response to similar questions by Christina Rossetti:

What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb;

If I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what can I give him----Give MY Heart.

In so many ways, you wonderful people of PLC do this. Seen and unseen. Here and there. On street corners and in corners of the sanctuary. What a gift God gave, a place and a will to give our hearts.

In joint singing of Advent and Christmas Carols,

ric

JESSE TREE ADVENT GIFT MINISTRY

This Advent season, Peace Lutheran Church will again provide gifts for children and young adults, and gift cards for families in the Harlem Heights Community. We will also be providing gifts to local Seniors as part of the NBC-2 Perkins Giving Tree. Our goal is to provide 30 gifts to each ministry. As in the past, we will continue to collect gift cards for food, along with a new ministry to help some of our own friends of Peace who are homebound, or otherwise could use an additional blessing. Details of each ministry are listed below. Please note that all gifts need to be returned to Peace before the 9:30 service on

December 6th.

HEIGHTS FOUNDATION -Select a gift tag(s) that will include needed information to help select a gift for a child or young adult. Record needed information on the gift log sheet. Purchase a gift between $20 and $25, do not wrap the gift, attach the original gift tag and return the gift to Peace on or before Sunday, December 6th. Please do not make a new gift tag, as the tags provided will be coded to assure all gifts are accounted for and get to the proper person.

NBC-2 PERKINS GIVING TREE – Select a gift tag(s) as in item 1 above. Wrap the gift and return it to Peace on or before Sunday, December 6th. These gifts will be presented to local area seniors, and since we are a bit of a senior congregation, this is a great ministry.

JESSSE TREE GIFT CARDS – We are again collecting gift cards for food to be distributed within the Harlem Heights Community. Preferred gift cards would be from Publix, Walmart or Target in the range of $20 to $25 each, but any amount will be appreciated. Envelopes will be furnished to place your gift on the Jesse Tree. While we are receiving some funds from Thrivent, it is no longer a matching program, so you do not need to provide a receipt for the gift card purchase. Please also bring any gift cards to Peace by December 6th.

BLESSING OUR OWN - As a new ministry, our parish nurse, Marilyn Kranich, has become aware of a number of our own friends of Peace who are homebound, or others who we could bless with a gift, or in others ways we could help them. This Advent season, we will be collecting by cash or check, gifts to be placed on the Jesse Tree to purchase gifts or otherwise help a friend of Peace. If you wish to participate in this new ministry, place your gift in the envelope provided and hang it on the Jesse Tree. If you provide a check, mark Jesse Tree in the memo line. Any excess funds received will be presented to the Gladiolus Food Pantry to assist their ministry.

If you have questions on any of these ministries, please contact Steve or Carolyn Mijokovic,

or Bob Cline.

Thank you for opening your hearts to these ministries.

2016 Nominations for Church Council

I am Lori Blass-Adams, wife of Brian, daughter-in-law of Bob Adams.

In Sept 2000, I moved from the Chicago area to sunny Fort Myers, to start a new job with Chico's headquarters, where I am still enjoying full-time work supporting all the brands in Business Process Management - Chico's, White House Black Market and Soma.

Brian and I joined Peace several years ago to be able to spend more time with his Mom Mickey and Dad.

I love to share God's word by singing in the choir every week and I volunteer for various service at Harry Chapin, etc.

Last Spring I was asked, with my husband Brian, to represent Peace at the Synod assembly in June, which was a wonderful and spiritual experience.

Lastly, I am "second-in-command" for our mission to Haiti Jan 2016 - Raise the Roof in Haiti, which has been no small effort developing a website, coordinating fundraising items and events, managing a six-course benefit dinner, etc.

I am Jeff Carter. I was a member of Immanuel Lutheran in Earlville, Illinois, where I was on the council and a council president. We then went to Our Saviors in Arlington Heights, Illinois. We then moved to Our Saviors in Glenview, Illinois, where I was on the council and the council president. We were members of Messiah in North Fort Myers after moving to Florida, and joined Peace about a month ago.

I am Grant Ellingson. I have been at Peace for about 9 years and am a previous council member. I was baptized at Sacred Heart Lutheran in Adams, MN. I was confirmed at LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy, MN. I have one son, Adam, currently serving in the Air Force. He loves to visit his dad in sunny Florida. I have one daughter, who with her husband and 4 children live in Kingwood, TX. Helping out at Peace, visiting my grandchildren, golfing and fishing consume a large part of my life.

Nettie and I moved from Holmen, WI to Cape Coral in June of 2014. We attended Journey Lutheran, where I also served on the Property team. We found Peace Lutheran in September of 2014 and became members in November of 2014. We were drawn to the diversity and welcoming environment at Peace Lutheran. I am currently serving on the capital campaign/stewardship committee. Nettie and I have two grown children Mychal and Kristina, who live in Minneapolis, MN.

In Wisconsin, I owned a blending and packaging powder plant that blended milk

powder for the food and nutritional industry.

Let’s Do Dinner!

Does this sound like something you would be interested in doing? I hope so! This is the new name of the GROUP FORMERLY KNOWN AS “DINNER FOR 8. “ Why the name change, you might ask? It is my goal to make this group as inclusive as possible. What I have found is groups of 5 or 6 work just as well as groups of 7 or 8. There will be a place to indicate whether you prefer a group of 5 or 6, or if 7 or 8 will work

for you at the time you sign up. This way, you will feel more comfortable in registering since you will determine what works best for you. Remember, it does not matter if you are single or a couple, ALL ARE WELCOME!

“Let’ s Do Dinner!”is a small group for those who are interested in getting to know other people at Peace. What better way to get to know one another than to share an evening of food and fellowship with a small group of 5,6,7,or 8 people from our congregation.

How does it work? Sign-up on the Welcome Flyer at Peace, or contact me, Roxane Vermillion (610-393-1056 or [email protected]). Please be sure to indicate the size of the group that you would prefer. The deadline for registration is Sunday, January 10, 2016. Once I have all the names of the participants, I will organize everyone into small dinner groups. It will be up to each smaller group to determine the hosts, the date, and the format for each month’s gathering.

Come join the fun! Have a wonderful time getting to know our family at Peace!

The Reverend Ronald J. Ryckman was called to the Church Triumphant on Nov. 3, 2015, at the age of 74. Pastor Ryckman was born in Goodrich, Michigan. He graduated from Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Ohio, and was ordained at Bethel Lutheran Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan in 1968.

Pastor Ryckman served as parish pastor for 20 years at: Drammen/Pleasant Valley Lu theran Church in Mondovi and First English Lutheran Church in Wausau, Wisconsin; and as the founding pastor of Joy Lutheran Church in Palm Bay. In 1988 he was called as Mission Director of the Florida-Bahamas Synod. (Pr Ryckman nurtured the planting—recruited Pr Walter, oversaw site purchase, organization development, building and ministry/mission development--- of our congregation.) After long and faithful ministry of planting and supporting churches in our synod, Ron retired in August of 2006.

Ron is survived by his wife, Wahneeta and family. Notes may be sent to Wahneeta at her home address: 127 Naylor Street, NE, Palm Bay, Florida 32907.

New Member Perspective by Keith Baumert

This is a Christmas story that just so happened to occur in July. For those who are seasonal and haven't lived in Florida during the summer, it rains here almost everyday. The showers usually don't last long but on this day they did. An elderly gentleman of 79 years who had a recent stroke needed his medicine. He took his electric wheelchair to go get it and the battery ran out on his way. I happened to be

working that day.

A customer noticed him on the side of the road a long distance away from the store where I work part-time. Showing Christmas compassion in July, she called 911 because it started to rain heavily on him. The next thing I know EMS is bringing him in the front door of the store. The kind EMS workers asked "Can we plug in this wheelchair to recharge while we take care of getting the medicine he needs?" I immediately said "YES" and thanked them for all they do for our community.

The elderly man's name was Don and he patiently waited for the EMS, sitting in his broken down wheelchair. I brought him some water to drink and asked him if he needed anything else. He answered with a speech impediment from his stroke but I could understand him well enough. He thanked me for helping him many times during our time together. EMS finally returned with the medicine he needed. Don stayed for awhile after EMS departed hoping that the battery would recharge enough. Guess what happened? Low and behold, the battery needed recharging all night because it had been totally drained.

I guess Don didn't expect anymore help so he asked if he could leave the chair there overnight to recharge. I quickly replied "YES" Then I asked him "How will you get home Don?" He replied "I'll go to a bus stop and get home." For someone who was out of breath merely getting out of his chair, I thought to myself, NO WAY! The next thing I heard was heavy rain falling again.

Calling the store manager, I asked for permission to drive Don home. So that's exactly what I did. Don barely made it to my car as I pulled up to the front door of the store. I reset my car's trip meter and followed Don's directions to his humble apartment. It was over 5 miles away according to the trip meter. Don's bus riding idea would not have worked. After a bus ride to the stop nearest his home, it would have been a half mile walk from there to his apartment.

I was so grateful that I could help him. Driving back to the store I thought to myself, how many people take for granted that something like this would NEVER happen to them? We should all remember that it happened to a man named Don who needed his medicine on a rainy day. We should all be thankful for the good life we have. Maybe it's a good idea to help others if we can, when their life isn't going so great as ours. I think that's what God wants us to consider. We can easily share the Christmas spirit year around, if we want to!

This is my final article with a "New Member Perspective" for I have attended for over one year on every Sunday since October 19. 2014. If you would like to see future articles from this writer about our community, please let our Pastor know about it. Thank you for allowing me to write for our newsletter in 2015 and Happy New Year to all.

Evelyn Giesel, 93, of Fort Myers, joined William, her husband of 66 years, in heaven on Nov. 3, 2015. Her family was on hand to bless her departure.

A Cleveland native, Evelyn married Bill Aug. 6, 1944 at Collinwood Methodist Church, Cleveland, Ohio. There they raised two children and attended Windermere United Methodist, where Evelyn edited the monthly newsletter, taught Sunday School and was president of the Women’s Society. In 1973, they moved to Thunderbird Mobile Home Community in Fort Myers and became active members of Fort Myers Beach United Methodist. Evelyn sang in the choir. Both joined the Lee Memorial Hospital Auxiliary,

where she served 25,000+ hours and was its president for a year. The couple loved to travel, visiting 49 states (they missed North Dakota), Europe and Canada. She loved to write, and especially looked forward to penning the annual Christmas card poem which detailed their adventures.

Dear Peace,

This note is to advise that as of January 1, 2016 we will be permanent residents of Sebastian, Florida and members of Christ the King Lutheran Church. We were so surprised when a son and his family bought a home in Sebastian, and then in too quick a fashion, we also bought a home, sold our New Jersey home, and someone called recently hearing we might want to sell our Fort Myers home, and the offer was made and accepted for a New Year closing. The trip that I sponsor to Ringling Brothers Circus Museum and related activities is still on for December, 2015. More information for the bulletin to come. We have sold our bus.

We are so grateful for our years of fellowship and blessings we have enjoyed in our many years with Peace Lutheran Church...from the Masonic Temple to our new location.

Dear Pastor Walter,

I really appreciate that your church has been praying for me for a long time. I just wanted to thank you and your church for my wonderful prayer shawl. It is really beautiful and such a thoughtful gesture. I have it in my room and will use it always.

Love,

Jeanna McGill (Joyce English’s granddaughter)

Pastor Walter,

Thank you so much for the beautiful prayer shawl and blessings from Christ’s people in the congregation. The ladies did a beautiful job. I will think of Peace Lutheran Church this winter when I wrap myself up on cold nights. I love and miss Darlene very much.
