has returned to Parkside! Students may bring in donations of NEW mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves for children in need in our community. Items may be placed on the tree in the main entrance of our school from now through December 9th! Thank you for your kindness and generosity!

Fourth GradeFourth Grade Indiana turns 200 years old on Sunday, December 11, 2016! 4th graders will celebrate with Art Smart, a program presented by Ginny Gilbert in three parts, which will teach us about Indiana history and art at the same time! 4th and 5th grade AC will also present their “Hoosier Hystoria” musical drama (and comedy) on Thursday, December 8 in the cafeteria at 1:15 to 4th grade classes and guests.

PrePre--KK Mrs. Morlok's Pre-K class would like to thank Frankie Polyak, Luke Dornfeld and Gabe Piper for their help this semes-ter. These students volunteered during part of their recess nearly every day to help our students in the lunch line. They were incredi-bly helpful in assisting students with their food choices in order to keep the lunch lines moving!

Third GradeThird Grade Mrs. Love's class will be putting on a program for our families on December 20th at 9:30 in the Harrison Room. It is an original play called "The Holiday Express" about the holiday traditions from around the world. Come to see your special 3rd grader perform and stay for cookie refreshments.

2017 Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award2017 Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award. This award recognizes teachers who are role models for others. If you would like to nominate a teacher here at Parkside you may pick up information in the office or go to the school website to download nomina-tion information. Nominations are due by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2017.

Notes from the NurseNotes from the Nurse The nurse’s office is in need of extra pants. If you have any pants that your child has outgrown and would like to donate them to school, please bring them to the nurse. We especially need sweat pants. Any size is welcome but small sizes are needed most. Then if a child has an accident or spills something on their pants we have some for them to borrow. If your student has brought home pants that were borrowed from the nurse, please return them. Currently the nurse has no pants that can be borrowed in case of an accident. Thank you for your help!

Dear Parents,

We are quickly nearing the end of the first semester. I am very excited about all of the good things

happening in our classrooms throughout the school. Congratulations to our Lego Robotics Team for getting 1st

place in the regional competition and making it to the state competition. Also, congratulations to the Spell

Bowl Team for getting 2nd place in the regional competition and 4th place in the state. I am very proud of the

hard work that these students put in to compete in these extra-curricular activities, but more importantly how

these students represented Parkside Elementary in the community.

Please be sure to dress your children appropriately for the colder temperatures. Make sure that they

are making smart choices at snack and meal time. Also, be sure that your children are getting sufficient sleep

every night. This is how you can help us reach our attendance goal, but more importantly keep your children

healthy and focused in the classroom.

Here are some other ideas that parents could do to help us achieve our academic goals:

Reading -

Have plenty of books and other reading material in your home for you and your child to read. This does

not have to be a great expense.

Be sure your child sees you reading at other times, too. You set the example.

Take your child to the library to check out books with their own library card.

Help your child make connections with their own experiences to the characters in the text. For example,

places they have been, people that they know, things that they have done, and things that they have read

before.

Ask your child questions about books that you have read together. “What do you think about…” or “How

do you feel when…” and “Why do you think…”.

Practice makes perfect. Continue to praise your child for putting in effort to read.

Make shared reading time a special time together.

Develop a Growth Mindset with your children -

INSTEAD OF… TRY THINKING…

I’m not good at this What am I missing?

I give up I’ll use a different strategy

It’s good enough Is this really my best work?

I can’t make this any better I can always improve

This is too hard This may take some time

I made a mistake Mistakes help me learn

I just can’t do this I am going to train my brain

I’ll never be that smart I will learn how to do this

Plan A didn’t work There’s always Plan B

My friend can do it I will learn from them

Parkside is a wonderful school with great families, staff, and students. With everyone working together,

we will do everything we can to prepare your children for the future. Thank you again for your support and

best wishes for the upcoming holidays.

Sincerely,
