Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Ministers, Religious Ed Students, Parish Families and Friends,

Pax Christi semper vobiscum! In June we began our Adoration for Vocations and

Solemn Vespers with the intention of praying for priestly and religious vocations. It is scheduled every Sunday at 5:00pm, before the evening Mass. I understand that the Liturgy of the Hours is not something that many are familiar with. It is a public prayer of the Church that is communal in nature like the Mass. It is the prayer of Jesus Christ Himself that transforms the community into His voice in praising God the Father.

We pray for holy vocations because we need ministers who will continue the mission of Jesus Christ. We need the dispensers of His Sacraments. I need your support to promotion of vocations to the priestly and religious life among our families. In the long run, however, our prayer for holy vocations encompasses also “other calls” that God would like us to respond to as members of the Church. Married life, single blessedness and lay consecration are other ways by which one can unreservedly respond to God’s call. However, we are aware that our generation is challenged with life decisions. Many young people these days are unaware of their vocation, or even realize that God has a particular calling for them, because they have no opportunity to listen attentively to His voice in their hearts. The purpose of our communal prayer for vocations is to guide our young people towards prayerful attentiveness so they can hear accurately the voice of God.

Our unified collaboration is needed to achieve this goal. We ought to set aside a little bit of our time for prayer. An hour of attentive listening before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament can surely help many to deepen their relationship with Jesus. This is the sole purpose of our parish-wide Adoration for Vocations. Sunday afternoons are normally a down time for many families. Watching a Sunday football game or reading a book are perhaps common for Sunday recreation. I for myself would rather take a nap to get ready for the evening Mass at 6:00pm. But I believe that a little bit of sacrifice will bring us something quite worthy of our time and energy. I come for adoration because I ask Jesus for priests who can replace me when I have finished what I ought to contribute to His mission.

I offer the following proposal. Would it be possible that participation in our Sunday Adoration for Vocations be assigned to various groups and parish organizations? Each group would have their specific Sunday of prayer. However, each and all are welcome to participate on other Sundays that they are not

Estimados Ministros Parroquiales, Estudiantes de Educación Religiosa, Familiares y Amigos de la Parroquia,

¡Pax Christi semper vobiscum! En junio comenzamos nuestra Adoración por las

Vocaciones y Vísperas Solemnes con la intención de orar por las vocaciones sacerdotales y religiosas. Está programada todos los domingos a las 5:00pm, antes de la misa vespertina. Entiendo que la Liturgia de las Horas no es algo con lo que muchos estén familiarizados. Es una oración pública de la Iglesia que es de naturaleza comunitaria como la Misa. Es la oración de Jesucristo mismo la que transforma a la comunidad en Su voz para alabar a Dios Padre.

Oramos por las vocaciones santas porque necesitamos ministros que continúen la misión de Jesucristo. Necesitamos los dispensadores de Sus Sacramentos. Necesito su apoyo para la promoción de las vocaciones a la vida sacerdotal y religiosa entre nuestras familias. Sin embargo, a la larga, nuestra oración por las santas vocaciones abarca también “otras llamadas” a las que Dios quiere que respondamos como miembros de la Iglesia. La vida matrimonial, la bienaventuranza de la soltería y la consagración laical son otras formas en las que uno puede responder sin reservas a la llamada de Dios. Sin embargo, somos conscientes de que nuestra generación enfrenta el desafío de decisiones de vida. Muchos jóvenes en estos días desconocen su vocación, o incluso se dan cuenta de que Dios tiene un llamado particular para ellos, porque no tienen la oportunidad de escuchar atentamente su voz en sus corazones. El propósito de nuestra oración comunitaria por las vocaciones es guiar a nuestros jóvenes hacia la atención en oración para que puedan escuchar con precisión la voz de Dios.

Se necesita nuestra colaboración unificada para lograr este objetivo. Debemos apartar un poco de nuestro tiempo para la oración. Una hora de escucha atenta ante Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento seguramente puede ayudar a muchos a profundizar su relación con Jesús. Este es el único propósito de nuestra Adoración por las Vocaciones en toda la parroquia. Los domingos por la tarde son normalmente un tiempo de descanso para muchas familias. Ver un partido de fútbol dominical o leer un libro es quizás algo común para la recreación dominical. Yo mismo prefiero tomar una siesta para prepararme para la misa de la tarde a las 6:00pm. Pero creo que un poco de sacrificio nos traerá algo bastante digno de nuestro tiempo y energía. Vengo a la adoración porque le pido a Jesús sacerdotes que puedan reemplazarme cuando haya terminado lo que debo aportar a su misión.

Ofrezco la siguiente propuesta. ¿Sería posible que la participación en nuestra Adoración dominical por las vocaciones se asignara a varios grupos y organizaciones parroquiales? Cada grupo tendría su domingo de oración específico. Sin embargo, todos y cada uno son bienvenidos a participar en otros domingos a los que no estén

Our parish families are invited to come every and any Sunday they prefer. This is our best response to the command of Jesus Christ:

“The harvest is great, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest.” (Mt. 9:38-39)

The invocation that we say during our communal prayers is another way of reminding ourselves of our response to the divine command. “Send O Lord, Holy Apostles into your Church.” I hope you decide to come and pray with us on Sunday evenings. Our lives are more meaningful when we realize that what we are doing right now is our response to God's call to prayer as an investment of grace for our young people.

“Our comparative Income & Expense Report for the fiscal years ending June 30, 2020, and June 30, 2019, appears above. We suffered a drastic decrease in parish income with the onset of the COVID-19 restrictions in mid-March. For example, Sunday & Holy Day collections decreased by $71,448 from 2019 to 2020. Also, a large part of our maintenance expense went into our annual flurry of emergency boiler & heating system repairs. Over the past two years many sections of heating pipes have been replaced, so hopefully the ruptures will be less this current year. We are still faced with urgent building projects such as a new boiler for the parish center; tuckpointing of the bell towers, church façades and rectory; church roof repair, etc.

Memorial Candles

These candles will serve as our commemorative candles for our faithful departed. Each candle will be dedicated to the name of the deceased, and their name will be mentioned before each Mass during the month of November. The candles will be kept lit in the church to remind us of our prayers for our beloved departed.
