SCHOOL VISION

To build a community that empowers, challenges and inspires learners to foster their

creativity and talents, developing the skills to fulfil their dreams in an ever-changing

world.

...THINK...IMAGINE...BECOME...

November 30th 2017

Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a Severe Weather Warn-

ing for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flooding (including flash flood-

ing and riverine flooding) for Victoria. Severe weather may occur from

Thursday afternoon to Sunday 3 December 2017. This may prove to be

a significant event impacting school facilities and operations, travel

on roads, and any camps or weekend activity. All school families

should be aware of the risk of travelling on roads, particularly in the

event of flash flooding, and to remember to never drive in or venture

into flood water.

As always there is such a lot happening at SEPS. We met all the new

2018 Parents at an information evening where they heard about all

that school offers and enlightening them about the many aspects of

school at Sandy East. As we write this newsletter Market Day will be in

full swing with the school community supporting level 6 students for

their graduation celebrations.

Coming up next week is Planning week where 2018 teaching teams

will be planning for the new school year. In schools at this time of the

year anything can happen so staffing is set but we are never 100%

certain until the beginning of the school year.

Thank you to those who gave me feedback about what works best

for your child with learning and friendships.

Carols Night is next Wednesday so please come along. We are col-

lecting donations for Sandringham Hospital which so many of our

community use. Icypoles, water and coffee will be available at the

canteen during the picnic time. That special man in a red suit will also

appear during the evening.

according to a the study by Scholastic Australia and YouGov, a leading market research company.

Fast forward one year and the latest round of NAPLAN results show Australia’s literacy outcomes fail-

ing to improve, with a 2.04% decline in writing skills across all year groups since 2011.

So where do the solutions lie? Research on this issue has offered some insights as to how schools can

improve students’ engagement and outcomes in this critical area. The Australian Kids and Family

Reading Report (KFRR) shows that an overwhelming 91% of kids aged 9-11 – and 93% of kids aged 6-8

– agree that their favourite books to read are the ones they have picked out themselves.

So the message for us is to add some interest based books to the Christmas lists, visit our local Bayside

Libraries, read every night as a family modelling a love of reading. We at school are ensuring that

every level has a classroom based library so that students have good literature ready to be devoured.

Anyone cleaning out your children’s bookshelves please remember we would love donations for

classrooms.

A message about snakes from Julie Laurent – SEPS First Aid guru!

I was just reading on the Bayside Community Hub of some large snakes spotted a little further down

the bay ... and thought it wouldn't do any harm to remind ourselves of what to do should someone

get bitten:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38scF4r-xVo

Obviously, the best thing to do is avoid them like the plague. Keep still if you spot one, and give it a

chance to move away.

Call 000. Lie casualty down and keep them as still and calm as possible.

No washing the wound, no sucking out of venom and no tourniquet!

If you get a chance, take a photo of the snake for ID purposes.

Fingers crossed - we never have to do this!

Congratulations – great achievement.

Last Thursday (16th November) 22 students from 4A and one representative from another class, all

received buzz cuts ranging from 1-4, in an effort to raise money for Prostate Cancer. It was a great

day as these cuts took place in the JLC, at lunchtime, in front of both laughing and horrified faces.

So far we have raised an amazing $4,851 after setting what we thought was a reasonable target of

$500. This could not have occurred without the entire SEPS community getting behind this great

cause.

The account to donate into will be open until the end of November, so if anybody would still like to

donate to this great cause and get us over the $5,000 mark, please go to the following link.

Congratulations on this initiative 4A –

what an achievement – well done all.

Working bee - whole school.

Sunday 26th November was our FINAL working Bee. We had a group of stalwarts from many classes

who worked through rain – thank you all very much. Mrs Casonato is still doing the maths to estab-

lish the lunch winner!

Moving Classrooms

Thank you to the teachers and helpers who diligently moved classrooms last week. Students have

settled into their new locations and are enthusiastically working as always. Fleetwood, the compa-

in no time the classroom was gone to its new location. Very

quick and efficient – they have done it many times over

which shows in their work.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING AT SANDY EAST THIS WEEK?

Foundation

Wow, the end of the year is getting nearer! The students have been busy in the classrooms this week,

impressing the teachers with just how much they have learnt. In Reading, they have continued to fo-

cus on developing their comprehension and retelling strategies. In Writing, they have been learning to

write letters, writing their own letters to be posted to Santa. Our spelling focus is /th/ as in “thumb”. In

Maths, the students have been learning more about subtraction.

We are all looking forward to our Carols Night on Wednesday 6th December. The students are prac-

tising hard to get their songs ready.

Level 1 & 2

A warm welcome to you all again as we finish week 8 of Term. The testing is essentially finished and

normality will resume next week, which will be great for the students. They have worked tirelessly and

they are to be commended for showing such a great attitude during testing.

We have been working hard on our personal recounts this week and the students have been writing

about their favourite moments from the year, a very enjoyable piece of work for the teachers to

mark. In maths, we have been finalising our learning task and they are so excited to show it to you at

our ‘expo’ on Monday at 3pm in your child’s classroom. We really hope you can attend so we can

celebrate our learning with you.

This week and next sees the start of our woodwork incursion where the students will be getting hands

on and creating something special to bring home. More to follow next week…

Wishing you a relaxing weekend filled with fun and laughter.

Thank you to all the parents for completing the Compass online permission/payment for the incur-

sion this week. This was our first time using the online system and we hope everyone had a smooth

introduction.

Level 1 and 2 Team

Level 3 and 4

The Level 3 and 4s have been very busy the last two weeks packing up classrooms, moving, unpacking,

etc. This week, cranes moved the Level 3 portable a couple of meters and transferred the Level 3 and 4

portable over to the sandpit to make room for the new MOD 10 building. Everyone has settled well into

their new spaces and adapted to all of the changes going on. Well done Level 3 and 4 students!

In reading, students have been practicing their accuracy and fluency by reading and acting out plays

with their classmates. Some of the plays include: Jack and the Beanstalk, Piggie Pie, Ghost House,

Grandpa for Sale, Riddles in the Dark and Cinderella. Over the next fortnight, student will act out their

plays for their peers!

Students have started their ERP this week, which will all relate to our health related learning intentions.

Each student’s ERP will have a focus on their personal health and goal setting. Some students have al-

ready been starting to plan diary entries, autobiographies, photo albums, timelines, etc. We are so excit-

ed to see where their creativity brings them!

We hope everyone has a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you all for the SEPS Christmas

Carols evening next week!

Level 3 and 4 Team

Level 5 & 6 What an exciting week this has been—Market Day on Thursday was bigger and better than ever.

Recap:

To start the week off we designed our own treasure map. We then use spray bottles to spray paint

on paper to make a piece of artwork. We also created colourful fish using paper plates and used pa-

per to create awesome origami birds. We then had a team scavenger hunt to end the week. It was so

much fun trying to find all the tokens around the school!
