    TO ALL

Aamir Khan to direct his dream

projectDabangg 2 is very exciting for

me: Sonakshi SinhaShe made her Bollywood debut

    with the blockbuster Dabangg

    in 2010 and now actress

    Sonakshi Sinha, who is also

a part of Dabangg 2, says she

is upbeat about being a part

of the franchise. I am very

excited. When a lm gets a

good response, it feels good. I

    started with Dabangg and now

    doing Dabangg 2 is very

    exciting for me, the 25-year-

old said on the sidelines of an

    event here on Sunday.

    Sonakshi was joined at the

    event by director Milan

    Luthria, who is working with

her in the sequel to Once Upon

    A Time in Mumbaai.

    In the movie, Sonakshi features

    opposite Akshay Kumar, who

    plays don Shoaib Khan. But

she refuses to call her own part

    negative.

Its negative? No. Its a very

    interesting character. For

me, as an actor it is a very

    challenging role and the lm

is set in a very interesting

premise . It is a great role, thats

all I can say now, Sonakshi

    said.

    The lm also features Imran

Khan and Sonali Bendre. It is

to release around Eid next year.

    After making a highly

    successful directorial debut

    with Taare Zameen Par, actor

    Aamir Khan is contemplating

    another stint behind the

    camera. His 2007 lm Taare

    Zameen Par received accolades

    from both critics and viewers.

    The 47-year-old actor had also

    worked as an assistant director

    for his lmmaker-uncle Nasir

    Hussains movies like Manzil

    Manzil (1984) and Zabardast

    (1985).

    I have a story that I have

chosen and hope to direct. But

right now I have r esponsibility

as an actor, plus I have (TV

    show) Satyamev Jayate season

    2, said Aamir .

    The script is written by

    someone else. I have told

    the writer it (direction) will

take time. I dont know when

I would direct next. As I

    have Peekay, Dhoom 3 and

    Satyameva Jayaate 2 in hand.

I might produce it as well, he

    added.

Aamir said that he is fa scinated

    with Mahabharat and will

love to be a part of the epics

present ation on big screen one

day. It is a desire. The project

is huge. It is a dream project

for me. But if I decide today

that I am making it, I will have

to give 20 years to it. This is

why I am scared, if I say yes

and decide to make it, ve

years will go only in research

and then to execute it.... the

    material is very exciting for

    me, he said.

Aamir also cleared the air on

    reports of creative differences

between him and direct or of

    his upcoming movie Talaash

    Reema Kagti.

As far as Reema is concerne

    these rumours are not tru

Lots of times they are untru

    Like Lagaan, this time arou

    also there was something abo

me not being happy with t

lm. If I go around explaini

    every rumour I will have

stop working. I have to let

    and decide that ultimately t

    lm will speak for itself,

    said.

Rakhi Sawant to enter Bigg BossPopular Bollywood item girl

Rakhi Sawant is all set to enter

the mud house of Bigg Boss

    and entertain the inmates. The

    ex-contestant would be ma king

    a special appearance on the

    reality show and enter the

    neigbouring house on Friday.

Season 6 of the hit TV show

now has a second house on the

    same premises in Lonavala

where the rst one is located.

    The new house is created

    around a rural theme and

    does not have any luxurious

    facilities.

    Titled Bigg Boss Ke Naye

    Padosi, the mud house has

    some recently eliminated

contestants as well as a few

    new entrants staying there as

    neighbours of the surviving

    contestants who reside in the

    main house.

    Meanwhile actor Rajeev

    Khandelwal will also be

coming on the show to meet

    host Salman Khan to promote

    his movie Table No 21.

    Participants this season

    include popular television

    vamp Urvashi Dholakia, actor

    Rajiv Paul, actress Delnaz

    Irani, Vishal Karwal, model-

    actress Mink, comic actor

    Vrajesh Hirjee, Bhojpuri actor

    Dinesh Lal Yadav, model-cum-

    actor Karisma Kotak, model

    and actor Sana Khan, model

    Niketan Madhok and c elebrity

    hairstylist Sapna Bhavnani.

and Mitali Nag. In a welcome

    trend, these actresses have

broken the fairness is t he on ly

    beauty mantra myth by not

just beco ming popu lar but also

    fetching high TRPs for their

    respective shows.

    Hina-starrer Yeh Rishta

    Kya Kehlata Hai recently

    completed 1,000 episodes,

    while Kratikas Punar Vivah

    is notching high TRPs.

For us, when we cast any

    actress, it is more important

for us to see that she ts the

character and is a good actor.

    Complexion doesnt really

matter at that moment. It is

    mind over beauty now, said

    Suzana Ghai, ction head, Star

    Plus.

    Other dusky actresses who

are ruling the TRP charts are

    Gulki Joshi in Phir Subah

    Hogi, Mitali in Afsar Bitiya,

    Sakshi Tanwar in Bade Acche

    Laggte Hai, Niaa Sharma

    in Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri

    Behna Hai and Deepika Singh

    in Diya Aur Baati Hum.

    Today if people see Sandhya

    (Deepika), Akshara (Hina) and

    Maanvi (Niaa), they see them

    as characters they play and

    their complexion doesnt really

    matter, said Ghai.

    This new change is surely

    encouraging, said Mitali, who

faced rejection in real life due

    to her da rker complexion.

It is good to see that the

    percept ion is gradu ally

    changing, though it hasnt

    changed completely. It is

    encouraging for girls who

used to get sidelined due to

    their complexion. I, too, was

    rejected so many times, said

    Mitali.

    I feel things happen when

    they are supposed to happen.

I feel that the role of Krishna

    was tailor-made for me, she

    added.

    The choice of actors largely

    depends upon the requirements

of a script, according to Wasim

    Sabir, who is helming Phir

    Subah Hogi.

    We should really not

    differentiate between

    fairer complexion or dusky

    complexion because Indian

    skin colour is naturally dark.

    However, the reason behind

    roping in dusky actresses

    depends upon the requirement

    of the script, said Sabir.

If you have to show a village

girl, then you have to cast

    someone who can bring that

    authenticity to the character.

When we get on to cast, it

is very important for us that

    people should connect with

    actors, he added.

    Writer Purnendu Shekhar

    agreed: Our lead actress in

    Balika Vadhu, Pratyusha

Banerjee, is dusky, but she ts

    the character completely and

has built a strong connect with

    the viewers.

More than fair skin it is the

    features that matter. We had

    introduced dusky Rajshree

    Thakur in Saat Phere. When

I rst saw her, I was quite

    surprised because I had never

    seen such a dark complexion

    before, but her features were

    remarkable and she looked

    really nice on screen,

    added.

    Another dusky actre

    Vindhya Tiwari, has recen

    replaced Ragini Nandwa

    Bollywood awards riggedAbhay Deol

Taking a dig at the numerous

    Bollywood awards, actor

    Abhay Deol said Saturday that

    most awards are either rigged

    or actors attend them because

they are paid for their presence.

Talk to any actor off record

and he will tell you, you either

go because you are winning an

award or you go because you

    are getting paid. Otherwise,

    you dont go, Abhay said

    during an interactive session

    at the 43rd International Film

    Festival of India (IFFI) here.

In that case, pay me and Ill

perfor m. If you tell me you are

awarding talent, then no. It is

    just an exercise in appeasing

those you have worked with or

    appeasing those you want to

    work with, he said candidly.

    He recalled an instance from

    2009 when his movie Dev

D, a radical take on the

    iconic Devdas lm, rocked

    the theatres, and despite

    an electrifying and a well-

    appreciated performance,

    Abhay was not nominated for

    any awards.

    I was promoting Road,

Movie at the time the Filmfare

    Awards were happening, and

no one wanted to talk to me

    about Road. The entire

press wanted to know why I

    wasnt selected for an award.

And I said, It was a family

fare. If you are part of the

family, then you will get i

And I stick by that, Abh

    said. The validation that

    might be doing somethi

right is the fact that I didnt g

    the award, he joked.

Katrina Kaif to get Rs. 2 crore for

a wedding performanceKatrina Kaif is never out ofwork, it seems. Even when the

actor isnt shooting for one of

her many lm projects, she is

    still making money by utilising

    her free time to perform

    at weddings and awards

    functions. Now a source close

    to Katrina reveals that the

actor was paid in crores for her

    recent

    appearance at a high-prole

    wedding at the Jodhpur Palace

    in Rajasthan.

    Incidentally, A-list Bollywood

    leading ladies are known

to usually charge onlybetween Rs. 30-45 lakh for a

    perfor mance. She perfor med

to some of her hit songs.

    Of course, her item number

    Chikni Chameli was one of

them and she was paid Rs. 1.5

crore for it, says the source.

And she was not the only one

    to enthrall the guests there.

    Priyanka Chopra also took

to the stage, but we are not

    sure how much she charged

to be there. But the gure is

    denitely not more than what

    Katrina was paid, says the

    source.

But the story doesnt end here.

    The actor will perform again,

early next month, at an event in

the city, and she will be paid an

    even larger amount of money.

    She has already bagged a

    deal for another wedding

perfor mance. This will be at

the Taj Lands End, Bandra, on

    December 3.

She is getting paid Rs. 2 crore

    for it, says our source.

And who are the people who

    broker such deals for these

stars? There are a number of

    agencies functioning across

    the country that negotiate on

behalf of their cl ients to have a

    star performance in a wedding

    and other social ceremonies,

    says the source.

    Katrina is free until mid-

    December, after which she

will be shooting a song for

    Dhoom:3.

Deepika Padukone gets injuredduring Ram Leela shootDeepika Padukone is known

    to be very professional when

    it comes to her shooting

    schedules. And recently,

    the Cocktail actor further

    reinforced her image.

    Deepika, who is currently

    shooting for Sanjay Leela

    Bhansalis next, tentatively

    titled Ram Leela, apparently

    suffered a few bruises

and scratches on her arms and

    feet. But despite the swelling

    that the wounds caused, the

    actor continued to shoot.

    A source reveals, Deepika

    was wearing a heavy ghagra

    choli and weighty jewellery

for a song she was shooting

    that day. Ranveer Singh (co-

actor) was also dressed in a

dhoti. But he was wearing lots

    of bracelets and armlets. The

    choreographer required him

to lift her around the place

for the song, which is how his

    accessories ended up bruising

    her.

    The actors were shooting the

song at the set which has been

    created at Film City, Goregaon.

Since they were also required to

    stay barefoot for the traditional

    number, Deepika apparently

    even developed blisters on her

right sole. But none of that

    deterred her from completing

the shoot. She didnt utter a

word. It was only after the

    crew noticed her wound that

    the situation was brought to

    the directors notice, adds the

    source. Deepika and Ranveer

will come together for the rst

time in Ram Leela, which is

rumoured to be a Gujarati take

    on Shakespeares Romeo And

    Juliet.

    Aamir came together on screen

after seven years for the not-

    so-successful historical drama

    Mangal Pandey and now

they will be seen as a couple in

    forthcoming thr iller Talaash,

their third lm in 14 years.

    Reminiscing her experience

on the sets of Ghulam, Rani

said: When I did my rst

lm with him, I used to look

at his shoes as I used to be all

tensed and nervous. I was a

huge Aamir Khan fan. I had a

crush on him. When I had seen

    QSQT (Qayamat Se Qayamat

    Tak), I was in school.

    I was very nervous while

    doing a romantic scene with

him. I would look at his shoes

because I cou ldnt look into his

eyes because I feared I would

fall in love with him, she saidin a group interview.

Now I look into his eyes.

I keep gazing into his eyes

until he asks me not to, added

the actress who did a special

    appearance in Aamir-starrer

    Mann.

    The two enjoy a good

    friendship off the screen and

Rani hopes it is for lifetime.

Over the years, Aamir and I

    have built a friendship which,

I would like to believe, is for

life. I would like to believe that

I will be attending his 80th

birthd ay also, she sa id.

Rani, 34, is all praises for

    Aamir, 47.

He was a superstar when I did

my rst lm with him and he

is a much bigger superstar even

    now. His focus, dedication and

    sincerity towards his craft, his

    approach towards lmmaking,

    perfor mance and charact er,

    has become greater and bigger

    with time, she said.

    Talaash, directed by Reema

    Kagti, is hitting theatres Nov

INDIAN FOOD, BOLLYWOOD AND FESTIVALS VOTED TOP THREE LOVES CONNECTINGOVERSEAS INDIANS WITH INDIA SAYS WESTERN UNION

    Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    Nov. 8, 2012 The top

    three iconic characteristics

    connecting overseas Indians

most to their roots are, perhaps

    not surprisingly, Indian food,

    Bollywood and festivals

    reveals an international survey

released today by WesternUnion (NYSE: WU), a leader

    in global payment services.

    The Western Union Great

    loves that binds overseas

    Indians back home survey

    conducted by Nielsen asked

    Indians by birth or descent

    across major regions of the

    world with large Indian

    diaspora, the top three things

    that connected them most to

    India.

Over a fth (21%) said it was

    Indian cuisine, 15 percent

    named Bollywood lms and

    music and seven percent said

traditional festivals such asDiwali. Rounding out the

    top five were the sporting

game of Cricket at 6 percent

    and Ayurveda herbal healing

    at five percent. The Ministry

    of Overseas Indians estimates

    that over 25 million Indians

    lives overseas in 194 countries

base d on docu mente d

    statistics representing Non-

    Resident Indians and Persons

    of Indian origin. Western

    Union in 2011 remitted money

    from 196 countries into India

via its network of more than

    110,000 Agent locations

    located in 6000 towns, 497

cities across all 28 states in

    India as of 30 September

    2012.

The ranking of the top three

    Great Loves was similar for

    respondents originally from

    India and those with Indian

    descent. However, those with

    Indian descent were more

    enthusiastic over Bollywood

    and Festivals, versus those

    emigrants from India who

    favoured Indian cuisine and

    Ayurveda more.

    As a company moving money

    for overseas Indian for more

    than 19 years from nearly

    every corner of the globe,

    we are familiar with their

    adaptation as global citizens.

    The Western Union survey

    unsurprisingly proves that the

    spirit of India has transcended

global borders and is alive and

kicking just as it is within the

    Indian nation, said Kiran

Talaash one of most sensitive performances: Kareena Kapoor

    Bollywood superstar Aamir

    releasing his much-awaited

season, is betting on a work-

day Friday for the opening of

    Talaash, also starring Kareena

    about Talaash release,

    despite non-holiday

    Kareena Kapoor played a sex

    worker in Chameli and does

so again for Talaash, a role

    she describes as amongst her

    most sensitive and powerful.

    I play a prostitute, who

is kind of an escort. Its a

    very deep character. I have

    hopefully achieved a sensitive

    perfor mance. Its by far

    one of my most sensitive

perfor mances , I believe, said

Kareena ahead of the release of

    Talaash this Friday.

    Her role in Chameli cannot

be compare d with what she

    has portrayed in Talaash,

says Kareena, who will be seen

    sharing the screen with Aamir

Khan and Rani Mukerji in the

    thriller.

    Chameli was totally

    different. It was very raw.

    The lingo and the language,

    body language and the outt

    every thing was differ ent.

Here from head to toe, the

    perfor mance, and everyt hing

    is different, she said, adding

that she signed on the dotted

    line for Talaash because

it allowed her to work with

    Aamir again.

I dont look at the project with

    commercial aspect. I wanted to

    work with Reema (Kagti) and

    wanted to work with Aamir

again. I loved the role that was

offered to me. This is one of

the most powerful roles that I

    have done, she said.

Reema comes across as a very

    strong director and a strong

    persona lity, but when you

get to know her, she is a very

sensitive girl and that is what

she has brought about in her

actors and in her lm, Kareena

    said about her director.

Idiots in 2009 and wife Kiran

    Raos directorial debut Dhobi

    Ghat last year.

After his last three hits - 3

    Idiots, Ghajini and Taare

    Zameen Par - released on

    Christmas, Talaash will get a

    work-day release (November

    30) across 2400 screens in

    India.

    Talaash is the most anticipated

lm of the season. Trade is

very excited as it is very strong

    for non holiday Friday, a

    spokesperson said. The lm

is being made at a modest

budget of Rs. 40 crores and

    has already recovered all its

    revenues from its satellite sales

of the same amount, which is

    one of the highest ever.

    Even the 47-year-old actor

    is leaving no stone unturned

for the promotion of the lm.

He was recently seen on TV

series CID and also made other

    appearances for the lm.

Kevin Pietersen rested from T20squad but named in ODI team

Dhoni should not be judged byjust one bad game: Harbhajan

    Star batsman Kevin Pietersen

returned to the ODI side but

    was rested from the Twenty20

    Internationals as England

    announced their squads for

    the limited-over series against

    India starting next month.

    Pietersen, who returned to the

Test side for the ongoing series

after being sidelined due to the

    text message scandal during

    the home rubber against South

    Africa earlier this year, did

    not gure in the 13-strong

England squad for the two T20

    Internationals in Pune (Dec

    20) and Mumbai (Dec 22).

    He was, however, named in

    the 15-member ODI squad for

    the ve-match series which

begins at R ajkot on Januar y 11.

    Pietersen played his last ODI

    in February against Pakistan in

Dubai and was not picked for

    the home ODI series against

    South Africa following the text

    message scandal.

    Off-spinner Graeme Swann,

    who contributed substantially

    in Englands 10-wicket defeat

of India in the second Test,

    has been omitted from both

the squads as the England and

    Wales Cricket Board went for

    rotational policy.

    Stuart Broad will lead the

    Twenty20 side which has

    Surrey pace bowler Stuart

Meaker as the only uncappedplayer. Two members of the 13-

    man squad were not involved

    in Englands recent ICC

    World T20 campaign -- James

    Tredwell and Stuart Meaker.

    Steven Finn, who missed

the rst two matches of the

    ongoing Test series against

India due to an injury, gured

only in the ODI squad to be led

    by Alast air Cook .

    We are constantly looking to

    manage the workload of players

    as effectively as possible and

this winter is no different so

    there are number of players

who are being rested for parts

    of the winter programme. This

will enable them to take part

    in tness and conditioning

progra mmes in preparat ion for

    a busy 2013, he said.

    We have selected squadscontaining experienced

    international players alongside

    Cant think of Sachins retirement

till we nd an option: Sidhu

    Mahendra Singh Dhoni might

    have drawn ak for Indias

    poor perfor mance against

England in the second Test at

    Mumbai, but Harbhajan Singh

    on Wednesday came out in

    support of his skipper, saying

    one should not judge him

on the basis of just one bad

    perfor mance.

    The off-spinner, who was

part of the playing eleven at

    Wankhede Stadium, said one

    should not forget Dhonis

    contribution in making India

    the world champions.

Winning and losing is a part

of the game and players and

    captain like Dhoni, should not

be criticised for just losing a

    single game, Harbhajan said.

    We should not forget that

Dhoni is the same captain who

won us the rst World Cup

after 1983 triumph. He is one

of the best rated captains in the

    country.

By losing just a single match,

    one should not raise questions

at his ability, the tweaker, who

like his other spin mates was

put to test by the English side

    in Mumbai, added.

    The 31-year-old deposed

faith in his team and said the

side will bounce back in the

    forthcoming Test at the Eden

    Gardens in Kolkata.

    People should not forget that

we have beaten England in their

    home on many occasions. They

    should not criticise players

and captain like this. We will

perfor m better at Kolkata and

    will win there, he said.

    Asked about Sachin

    Tendulkars poor run with the

bat, Harbhajan , who was here

    along with teammate Suresh

    Raina, said: Sachin has

priceless c ontribut ion, not only

to Indian cricket, but to the

world cricket. If he fails in one

or two matches we should not

    criticise him.

My wish is that he should

    keep playing for the country.

His presence gives an edge to

    the team. Kolkata has always

    remained one of Sachins

    favourite venues and I am

hopeful that he will silence his

    critics with a brilliant knock

    there.

    There might be growing

    criticism against Sachin

Tendulkar after a string of poor

perfor mances but former I ndia

    opener Navjot Singh Sidhu

    feels the senior batsmans

presence is crucia l at a time

when the team is going through

    a transitional phase.

    We dont have VVS Laxman,

    Rahul Dravid and Sourav

Ganguly any more in the team.

    So we badly need experience

and till the time we nd an

    option we just cannot think

    about Tendulkars retirement,said Sidhu.

    Tendulkar has scored just 153

runs in the last 10 innings at

an average of 15.3 and has also

    been a major disappoint ment

in the last two Tests of the four-

    match series against England.

    On Tendulkars extended form

    slump, the cricketer turned

    commentator said, Sachin is

not God, he is just a human

    being. He doesnt have a

    sudarshan chakra, he just has

a willow and the bat fails at

    times.

    Sidhu said that he feels

    sad whenever Tendulkar is

    criticised.

Sachin is not just a personality,

he is an institution. He is a

    Kohinoor and cant be turned

    into glass.

I am condent he will return

to form in the next two Test

    matches, he insisted.

    Sidhu, however, admitted that

    Tendulkars reexes have gone

    down with age.

    His reexes might have gone

down but he has been playing

for the last 23 years and is

    experienced enough to come

out of this slump, said Sidhu.

    two lms. Besides Ishqueria,

he also has an action release

    called David (by director

    Bejoy Nambiar) lined up.

    Production houses seem to be

break ing their heads to come

    up with innovative promotional

    and marketing strategies for

    their lms. Now, UTV Motion

    Pictures Kai Po Che!, which

    is being directed by Abhishek

    Kapoor, will see cricketers

    Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan

and Ajay Jadeja take to the eld

    for a four-city promotional tour

    in January.

    An industry insider reveals that

the event, that will take place

    in New Delhi, Bengaluru,

    Ahmedabad and Mumbai, will

    involve the three professional

    cricketers, along with the cast

and crew of the lm, playing

    against local teams from these

    cities.

    Delhi is Ashishs home town

and, as Ajay is also from

    north, they will be playing

    the matches in the capital.

Zaheer will join the cast and

    crew in Ahmedabad. But the

    makers are currently trying

to convince them to play in

    Mumbai as well, says the

    insider.

    Whats more, the makers want

to be well prepared for the

    matches. So, they have even

    asked left-hand fast bowle

    Anushkas secret of success

    November 30, 2012 (TORONTO)

    15KOLLYWOODwww.starbuzz.ca

    Leggy lass Anushka Shetty

took some time off from the

    sets of Alex Pandian, where

    shes paired opposite Karthi,

to interact with the press. The

    rst question posted to her

was on her ability to impress

    everyone regardless of which

industry or lm she is a part of.

    Now before the young lady

    could respond to the question,

    the lms director Suraaj

sprung up to say that the reason

for her success is her smile, to

    which Anushka said that even

if she was not smiling, her co-

    star Karthi would ensure that

she had a good laugh on the set.

But on the topic of having got

    the opportunity to work with

    the top stars like Vikram,

    Suriya and Vijay, Anushka was

very matter of fact in saying

that it was only common that

    talented professionals would

prefer to work with pe ople who

    are of the same kind.

A man and his wife were

    having some problems at

    home and were giving each

    other the silent treatment. The

    next week the man realized

that he would need his wife

to wake him at 5.00 am for an

    early morning business ight

to Chicago. Not wanting to be

the rst to break the silence,

he nally wrote on a piece

of paper, Please wake me at

    5.00 am.

    The next morning the man

woke up, only to discover it

was 9.00am, and that he had

    missed his ight. Furious, he

was about to go and see why

    his wife hadnt woken him

when he noticed a piece of

paper by the bed ... it said...

    It is 5.00am; wake up.

    Prisoner: Look here, doctor!

    Youve already removed my

    spleen, tonsils, adenoids, and

one of my kidneys. I only

came to see if you could get

    me out of this place!

Doctor: I am, bit by bit.

    A dentist, after completing

work on a patient, came to

    him begging.

    Dentist: Could you help me?

Could you give out a few of

    your loudest, most painful

    screams?

Patient: Why? Docor, itwasnt all that bad this time.

    Dentist: There are so many

    people in the waiting room

right now, and I dont want

to miss the four oclock ball

    game.

    A little boy was attending

    his rst wedding. After the

    service, his cousin asked

    him, How many women can

    a man marry? Sixteen, the

boy responded. His cousi n was

amazed that he had an answer

so quickly. How do you know

    that? Easy, the little boy

said. All you have to do is

add it up, like the Bishop said:

    4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4

    poorer

An aged farmer and his wife

    were leaning against the edge

of their pig-pen when the old

    woman wistfully recalled that

the next week would mark their

    golden wedding anniversary.

    Lets have a party, Homer,

    she suggested. Lets kill a

    pig.

    The farmer scratched his

    grizzled head. Gee, Ethel,

    he nally answered, I dont

see why the pig should take

    the blame for something that

    happened fty yea rs ago.

A mother and her daughter were

    at the gynecologists ofce.

    The mother asked the doctor

    to examine her daughter. She

    has been having some strange

    symptoms and Im worried

    about her, the mother said.

    The doctor examined the

    daughter carefully and then

    announced, Madam, I believe

    your daughter is pregnant.

    The mother gasped, Thats

nonsense! Why, my little girlhas nothing whatsoever to do

with men. She turned to the

girl. You dont, do you, dear?

    No, mumsy, said the girl.

Why, you know that I have

never so much as kissed a

    man! The doctor looked from

    mother to daughter, and back

    again. Then, silently he stood

up and walked to the window,

    staring out.

    He continued staring until the

    mother felt compelled to ask,

    Doctor, is there something

    wrong out there?

    No, Madam, said the doctor.

Its just that the last time

    anything like this happened, a

star appeared in the East and I

was looking to see if another

one was going to show up.

    At a recent software

    engineering management

    course in the US, the

    participant s were given an

    awkward question to answer.

If you had just boarded an

    airliner and discovered that

    your team of programmers

    had been responsible for the

    ight control software how

    many of you would disembark

    immediately?

    Among the ensuing forest of

    raised hands, only one man

    sat motionless. When asked

what he would do, he replied

that he would be quite content

    to stay onboard.

    With his teams software, he

said, the plane was unlikely to

even taxi as far as the runway,

    let alone take off.

    The tired doctor was awakened

by a phone call in the middle

of the night. Please, you have

    to come right over, pleaded

the distraught young mother. My child has swallowed a

    contraceptive.

    The physician dressed

    quickly; but before he could

get out the door, the phone

    rang again.

You dont have to come over

after all, the woman said with

a sigh of relief. My husband

    just found another one.

    HAPPY DIWALI

    TO ALL

Are you sure your furnace wilwork all winter?

    Modern conveniences allow

us to ip a switch for light,

    insert a plug for electricity,

turn a tap on for fresh water

a nd we always assume t hat

    the household thermostat will

keep us cozy and warm when

    the winter winds howl outside.

None of these essentia ls are a

    guarantee however, especially

    home heating which always

calls for a degree of homeowner

    responsibility.

    In contrast though, a recent

survey found that only 25 per

    cent of Canadian homeowners

    listed booking a furnace

    maintenance appointment as

    a priority. Everyone else must

    either be keeping their ngers

    crossed, or doing it themselves.

To lengthen the life of your

    furnace, improve its reliability

    and reduce your energy

    bills, there are some simple

    maintenance tips that will

    make a big difference, says

    Dave Walton, the director of

    home ideas at Direct Energy.

    Dependability starts with

    cleaning or replacing the

    furnace lter every three

    months. In addition, be sure

    to knock down the household

    temperature at least two

    degrees overnightand also

during the day when nobody is

    home. This can actually save

you up to 4 per cent on heatingbills.

Walton points out that its also

a good idea to have a furnace

    protect ion and mainten ance

plan, especial ly if your tru sty

    heating system is more than

    ve years old. Protection plans

    give you an annual inspection

    as well as 24-hour emergency

    service by licensed technicians.

    These specialists do safety

    tests for carbon monoxide and

natural gas leaks, and they also

    test the combustion exhaust of

    the furnace.

    Other important low-cost steps

for better efciency include:closing the registers in unused

    and non-insulated spaces;

    sealing up air leaks arou

    windows and baseboards; a

    boosting the insulat ion (to

    least 30 centimetres/12 inch

    in the attic and basement.

    If you really want immedi

    and long-term savings howev

    investigate the advantages

    replacing your convention

    furnace with a high-efcien

one. Reports show that this o

step can result in cost savin

as high as 15 per cent maki

    it well worth the investment
