Weird Brain Puzzles Can Make You Smarter

Here’s the setup: There are five houses, each painted adifferent color. In each house lives a person with adifferent nationality. These five owners drink a certaintype of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, andkeep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, smokethe same cigar, or drink the same beverage. The question is, who owns the fish? Here are the clues:

The Brit lives in the red house The Swede keeps dogs as pets The Dane drinks tea The green house is on the left of the white

house

The green house’s owner drinks coffee The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds The owner of the yellow house smokes

Dunhill

The man living in the center house drinks milk The Norwegian lives in the first house The man who smokes blends lives next to the

one who keeps cats

“National Monuments” by John Martin AFMSFrom The November AFMS Newsletter

For the last ten months there have been a lot of discussionson the future of are National Monuments. There has been alot of miss-information presented by many political andenvironmental groups mainly to justify their agendas andposition. The Proclamation signed by the President onlyasked that a Review of the National Monuments, whichwas created by Presidential Action, be reviewed forcompliance with the Antiquities Act of 1906. There wasnothing in the Proclamation that authorized any change, reduction, or elimination of any standing NationalMonuments under review. The review has been completedand the report has been released by the Department of theInterior (DOI). The preliminary DOI report has been sentto the President for consideration on the 29 NationalMonuments under review. A final DOI report has beensent to the President with recommendations forconsideration. The report is yet to be released to thepublic, however there has been a copy of the report leakedfrom DOI.

The leaked DOI Final Report recommends some changesto 10 of the 29 National Monuments. These monumentsare: Bears Ears National Monument, Utah; Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Oregon; Gold ButteNational Monument, Nevada; Grand Staircase-Escalade,Utah; Katahdin Nation Monument, Maine; NortheastCanyons and Seamounts Marine National Monuments,Massachusetts; Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks NationalMonument, New Mexico; Pacific Remote Islands MarineNational Monument; Rio Grande Del Norte NationalMonument, New Mexico; Rose Atoll Marine NationalMonument, American Samoa.

The leaked DOI Final Report recommended changes bemade to these National Monuments, but did not provide ordefine the changes. It did recommend that the changes bemade in accordance with established laws and regulationsand should include public input. Will the President acceptthe recommendations in the leaked DOI Final Report? Itremains to be seen.

Will this review have an effect on RecreationalRockhounding? If there are changes made to the NationalMonuments it will be up to concerned Rockhounds tomake sure that the voice of the Rockhounds is heard andRecreational Collecting is included in the changes to theaffected National Monuments where applicable. A fewwords on the American Antiquities Act of 1906 asamended and its usage to create National Monumentswithout the consent of Congress or input from the Public.

The act stipulates that “The President may, in thePresident’s discretion, declare by public proclamation

What Was I Thinking?

I have a 10 inch oil saw. The 10 inch Agate Kutter belowis designed for water cutting. I guess the idea of cuttinghard rock inwater with a teninch blade wasjust tooimagining when Isaw one inQuartzsite.

Finely, I found ause for it. Ibought a 10 inchtile cutter fromHarbor Freightfor layingporcelain tile inour kitchen. Theonly problem was the Agate Kutter blade is only 0.050inches thick. Cutting 24 inch tiles cut easily except thethin blade tended to slightly wonder to the right.

Yahoo! Stiffen the 10 inch blade by adding a 7 inch thickblade, problem fixed.

WHERE GOLD COMES FROM

The Big Bang created light elements like hydrogen andhelium. Supernovas created medium elements, up to iron. But what about the heavier ones like gold, platinum anduranium? Astronomers thought they came from twoneutron stars colliding, and when they saw this crash theyconfirmed it. One astronomer described as a "giant trainwreck that creates gold." They estimate that this one eventgenerated an amount of gold and platinum that outweighsthe entire Earth by a factor of 10

When two extremely dense neutron stars crashed togetherin a distant galaxy, astronomers struck scientific gold, confirming previously unproven theories, including somefrom Albert Einstein.

Scientists announced Monday that after picking up twofaint signals in mid-August, they were able to find thelocation of the long-ago crash and see the end of it playout. Measurements of the light and other energy that thecrash produced helped them answer some cosmicquestions.

GRAVITATIONAL WAVES

Scientists, starting with Einstein, figured that when twoneutron stars collide they would produce a gravitationalwave, a ripple in the universe-wide fabric of space-time.Four other times that these waves were detected theywere the result of merging black holes. This is the firsttime scientists observed one caused by a neutron starcrash.

How to Avoid Haze on a Cabochon

Yes, it is possible to cloud or haze a cabochon in the finalpolishing step. There are at least two reasons thishappens. Some stones will haze under the influence ofmost polishing compounds due to their physical structure. These are usually soft materials below seven on the Mohsscale, such as obsidian, sodalite, malachite, variscite, etc.A good rule of thumb is: any stone that will dull and hazewhen used in a ring or pendant will also do so during thepolishing stages. When you run into one of these babiesthat just must be added to your personal collection, yourbest buy is to stay with diamond all the way. However,in most cases this problem occurs because of the personholding the dopstick. Improper sanding can leave a nipor fuzzy surface. A buildup of heat can create a flaw earlyin one of the sanding stages, scaling over and locking inthe dull haze you are trying to overcome. This part of theproblem can happen with most lapidary materials. Soavoid all heat buildup in your sanding operations. It'sabsolutely essential to have a clean stone beforepolishing.

Be certain extender fluid, soap, oily finger residue, etc., isremoved. Any contaminates will mingle with thepolishing agent and become part of the stone's surface. What should be a sparkling, flawless gem is cloudy andhazy and not an object of beauty. Only by going backand re-sanding to remove all traces of this microfilm canthe problem be corrected.

He built faux hot springs (pools heated by a boiler),broadcast from a radio station requesting donations intrade for miracle cures to majorailments, and recruiting a group ofhomeless men to construct an airport,a church, and a castle for theresort...all part of what made thisendeavor so intriguing.

His big down fall was to start sellingtime-shares in Zzyzx; he sold morespaces than he had. The BLM tookissue with Springer’s original claim tomining rights on the land. In fact theBLM held that the land where Springer had built his resortwas actually on BLM land.

After years of haggling, Springer was evicted from theland and he was sent to Federal Prison. The BLM tookover Zzyzx and let it sit there and deteriorate over theyears until they finally entered into a deal with CSU whichdeveloped a Desert Studies Program.

Cal State has refurbished the property and is conductingDesert Studies there. The CFMS has the privilege of usingZzyzx one week a year and they have some of the finestearth science and lapidary instruction that can be foundanywhere. They have such classes as cabbing, faceting, copper enameling, metal clay, carving, wire wrap, silverfabrication and much much more. They also have somegreat meals.

Please notethat CFMShas two earthscienceprograms–Zzyzx in thespring atSoda Springsa n d CampParadise inthe fall atClipper Millsin northern California. All members of CFMS should takeadvantage of these programs.

I’m sorry to say we haven’t been doing anythingrelating to the hobby for the last eleven weeks.Teresita and I started ripping out our ugly oldkitchen linoleum in August and finally now in lateOctober we have almost finished tile on the floor. What a job! To “getter done” it requires workingon it at least three or or four hours or more everyday. That’s about all we can take at our age.

I’m pleased how it is coming out and glad it will besoon over.
