This month’s FEATURE PRESENTATION

SEPTEMBER 11TH AMERICAN HEROES PROJECT written by Miss Colleen Luce

September 11th is a difficult part of our history to discuss at the Elementary level. This year I decided to teach a lesson on American Heroes. First the students watched a video by Kid President about every day heroes. In the video, Kid President discussed that not all hero’s wear capes and how every day people can be heroes too. The students synergized and discussed what words describe heroes and who our everyday heroes are. Once our chart was finished each student received their own American Heroes book. On the outside the students colored each branch of the military, a policeman, a fireman, and the American flag. On the inside the students wrote a special note to their heroes and drew them a picture. Some students wrote, “Thank you for your service,” while others wrote “You make my heart grow big.” Once they completed their book they chose who they wanted to send their book to. The books were shipped out to randomly selected military bases and the Pickerington Police Department with a note asking our heroes to send a picture of them reading our books. A few weeks went by with no response till one day when I checked my email. I stopped the students immediately while they were working and met them at the carpet. To our excitement we had received our first pictures back! Three Marines from Florida were happily reading our books. Although September 11th was a tragic time in our nation’s history, the students and I chose to honor that day by showing our American Heroes that we respect the job they do for us. Miss Luce

SCHOOL SCOOP ARRIVALS AND MORNING RUSH Just a few reminders regarding morning drop off for students. Students are allowed to enter the building starting at 9:00 am each day but must go into the cafeteria or into the breakfast line. At 9:05, when the first bell rings, students may then make their way to their classrooms. If your student is a parent drop off and you are arriving after 9:15, please make sure to park and sign your child in at the office. REPORTING ABSENCES Please remember to call the attendance hotline to report your child absent if they will be missing school. Ohio state law requires daily accounting of all students who are absent. This requires the office to contact the parent/guardian by phone for each absence that is not reported. If we are unable to reach you, we are required to call those listed on the emergency contact list until we can verify your child’s absence. If you have a planned absence is it important to not only report the absence in advance to the teacher but also to the school office. If you want to request homework for your child for the day(s) they are out, the request must be called in by 9:30 am. The homework is allowed to go home with a sibling or another child or the homework can be picked up in the office. Homework can be picked up in the office between 2:00 and 4:00 pm. It is helpful to let the office know what time you plan to be here so we can assure it will be ready. DISMISSAL CHANGES While we all know that consistency is important in a child’s life, it may become necessary to change your child’s dismissal plans. If you must change the way your child is to be dismissed, we ask that you follow the following procedure:

1. Send a note in advance to your child’s teacher and the teacher will inform the office. 2. If you are picking your student up early, please allow enough time to come into the

building and sign your student out while we call your student to meet you in the office. We cannot call students down to the office prior to your arrival here at school.

3. We ask that you do not call the school with changes to your child’s dismissal plans. This causes many unnecessary interruptions to the classroom learning as we call the class to notify the teacher and student of the change. We realize that emergency changes do arise and yes, please call us in these cases and we will let you child know of the change.

4. If we do not have information from a parent/guardian of a change in dismissal, your child will go home according to their normal plan for that day.

We appreciate your understanding and thank you in advance for your cooperation with dismissal. Please know our first and foremost concerns are the safety of your child and providing a positive and conducive learning environment.

PLEASE KEEP THIS CONVENIENT CUTOUT FOR YOUR QUICK REFERENCE

The Leader in Me

Work First, Then Play

I spend my time on things that are most

important. This means I say no to things I know I

should not do. I set priorities, make a

schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined

and organized.

November Class Lessons: For the month of November, we will review Habit 3: Put First Things First during counseling lessons. We will review that being a leader means spending time on things that are important, saying no to things we should not do, setting priorities, making a schedule, following a plan, and being disciplined and organized. “Work First, Then Play” is an important habit that will help our students succeed in school and in the real world! Career Café- Our first Career Café was a success! Our guest speaker, Mrs. Frost, shared about her job as a Director of Advancement at OSU. Students were interested to learn about event planning and of course to hear about Brutus! Our next opportunity for third and fourth graders to Begin With the End in Mind by participating in Career Café will be at the end of November when we have a few local firefighters who will visit us. Encourage your 3rd or 4th grader to sign up! Thanksgiving Meal Assistance: This year, Heritage Elementary’s community service leadership team is coordinating a Thanksgiving Meal food drive to benefit those in our community. Our school is also partnering with a local organization to supply meals to families. If you would like to donate any food items, please look for your child to bring home information about the drive. If your family would benefit from the support of a Thanksgiving meal, please contact Mrs. Gossett for more information. Holiday Assistance- The school year is flying by! With the holidays soon approaching, we know it can be a time of year when there is added financial and personal stress for families. Heritage Elementary is partnering with our local fire department to help provide gifts for children during the holiday season. If this is something your family would benefit from, please contact Mrs. Gossett for more information. The deadline to apply for holiday assistance is Friday, November 20th. If you would like to synergize with us and donate a new toy/gift to be shared with a family in need, it can be placed in the big red boxes that will be found throughout the community and in some schools. If you would like to donate in other ways, please let Mrs. Gossett know. HOPE Weekend Food Bags How it works… - Food provided per student for 3 meals on Saturday & Sunday - Bag of food is dropped at your school office weekly on Fridays - Weekend Food Program is confidential. No strings attached - Food is from Mid-Ohio Food Bank - Candidates are those who rely heavily on school food for nourishment How to sign up… -Contact your school counselor, Mrs. Gossett Additional resources Fairfield County 211- general assistance (740) 687-0500 Hands on Central Ohio (Franklin Co. 211) (614) 221-6766 Pickerington Food Pantry (614) 834-0079

VISON & HEARING SCREENINGS The state mandated Vision and Hearing screenings are in the process of being done for all Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders. If your student does not pass, you will be notified that further assessment by a professional eye or ear specialist is recommended. If your child is not in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd or 5th grade, and you are concerned about their vision or hearing, please let me know and I will gladly do a screening for your student. Also, as we get closer to cold and flu season, please remember to follow the district guidelines in regards to medications at school as well as keeping your child home when ill. You can find the details for this information in the packet of information sent home at the beginning of the school year, as well as at the Health Services section of the PLSD website: http://www.pickerington.k12.oh.us/health-services Stay Healthy! Tami Tackett, RN, BSN School Nurse [email protected] Toll Gate Elementary: 834-6300 Toll Gate Middle: 834-6400 Heritage Elementary: 833-6385 FLU SEASON IS COMING Which of these symptoms describe influenza? 1. Stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. 2. Runny nose, sneezing and normal temperature. 3. High fever, headache and cough. If you picked #3, you are right! Vomiting and diarrhea are not the flu at all, but you will hear many people saying they have “the flu” with these symptoms. Actually they may have an infection in their stomach or intestinal system called gastroenteritis. A cold is described in #2. Headaches and fever do not commonly occur with a cold, but cold symptoms are present with influenza. You may also have body aches, feel tired, have chills, a cough and a sore throat with the flu. Like many illnesses, the influenza virus is spread from the respiratory tract. If the mouth or nose is exposed to the virus particles in the air, or on a surface that has been contaminated with the virus, you are likely to get sick with influenza. Someone is contagious from one day before symptoms start until five days after becoming ill. You can help to prevent illnesses by using good personal hygiene. Persons with colds or the flu need to cover their mouths when sneezing or coughing. Then immediately afterward wash their hands because any article they touch after sneezing may carry a virus. The other way to prevent spreading the illness is by washing your own hands frequently. This is especially true before eating. The best way to prevent getting infected by the influenza virus is by getting a flu vaccine every year. The earlier in the season that you get the shot, the stronger your immunity will be to fight the virus. The flu vaccine is safe and recommended for most of the population. The people who should not get the vaccine are children under six months of age, those with a severe egg allergy, having a history of developing Guillain-Barreí syndrome after a previous vaccine, and people who have a moderate or severe illness accompanied by a fever (you just need to wait until the fever is gone before getting the vaccine). The vaccine is especially recommended for those at high risk, which include children from 6 months to 19 years, pregnant women, people over 50, those with a chronic medical condition and those living with or caring for those who are at high risk of getting the flu. The flu vaccine contains killed virus with which the body will build defenses. Since there is no live virus in the vaccine, you cannot get ill from getting the flu shot.

See if you can identify the true statements from the myths. True or False (answers at bottom of the page) 1. More than 200,000 people each year have complications from the flu that put them in the hospital. 2. People with asthma should not get the vaccine. 3. It is not safe to return to work or school after resting for a day or two of having the flu since you are still contagious. 4. You have to get a new shot every year, because different viruses cause the flu each year. 5. Over the counter medications can help relieve some of the symptoms of the flu. 6. The flu can be diarrhea and vomiting rather than cold like symptoms. 7. A cough can last for weeks to months after the other flu symptoms disappear. 8. When sick with the flu, you need to drink a lot of liquid and get plenty of rest.

One last note, if you or a loved one comes down with flu symptoms, you should go to your doctor right away. If caught in the first day or two, the doctor may give you anti-viral medication that will decrease the symptoms and length of your illness. 2015-2016 Heritage Elementary Group Counseling

Dear Parents/Guardians, The counseling program at Heritage Elementary is designed to meet the personal/social and academic needs of all students. One of the ways I serve students is by providing small group counseling. Many students have participated in and benefited from small groups during previous years at Heritage. Groups are offered throughout the school year. The purpose of the small group experience is to help children realize that they are not alone in their situation, to learn more information about that situation, and to develop strong coping skills. If you express an interest in any of the groups, additional information will be sent home with your child throughout the year as these groups are being formed. Please understand that it will take the entirety of the school year for group requests to be implemented. Keep in mind also that your child may not be serviced in a small group setting depending on the amount of student need and the level of distress indicated. If your child is not serviced in the small group setting, I can also work with you and the classroom teacher to implement classroom strategies that will help with the distress. If you are interested in a small group, please fill out the survey on the back of this form. Your answers will help in determining the issues that your child is experiencing. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at 833-6385 if you have questions or concerns. Sincerely, Tessa Gossett, School Counselor Heritage Elementary School

Please return this form in a sealed envelope to Mrs. Gossett, School Counselor.

Have you seen a difference? !!

!

• Are you seeing the 7 Habits in your child’s behavior outside of school?

• Have you noticed a change in the daily routine in your household because of the 7 Habits?

• Are they using the 7 Habits to problem-solve with siblings and friends?

We would love to hear about how you are seeing the 7 Habits outside of school. The staff of Heritage is so

proud of how the students are using the 7 Habits that we would like to showcase how these habits transfer

to other parts of their lives.

Please share what you are seeing with us! We want to add your feedback to our display in the office and

also highlighting these on our website. We want to show our community what Great Leaders we have here

ACADEMIC BOOSTERS/PTO

Pickerington Antique and Craft Show: Make sure you save the date -- November 7th from 9am-3pm, and attend the 31st Annual Pickerington Antique and Craft show at Pickerington High School Central. This is an important event for both high schools. The show is put on by volunteers from both Pickerington Central and North Parent Teacher Organizations. Funds raised are split evenly and used to fund both high school programming and scholarships for graduating seniors. There are over 120 vendor booths featuring handmade items - home decor, candles & facial products, soaps, candles, jewelry, copper & wood signs, art, decorative flags, stepping stones, Christmas decorations and ornaments to name a few & maybe a few more outside in our Courtyard weather dependent. Our antiques offer traditional style as well as an upbeat group of “shabby chic” vendors that will offer something for every home and taste including decorative items and re-purposed furniture. Like us on Facebook at “Pickerington Antiques & Craft Show” and see some of the new items early!! Admission to the event is $4 for adults, $2 for seniors and children 12 and under are free. There is no fee for parking and a terrific lunch is offered in the Commons. Pickerington High School Central is located at 300 Opportunity Way - just about 4.5 miles south of I-70 off of Hill Road.
