We write to you in a spirit o solidarity. We areconscious that women religious in the USA are atpresent undergoing an ocial investigation bythe Vatican. While we are many miles away andnot directly involved in your present experience,we are nevertheless aected by it. Where one parto the body suers, the whole body eels the pain.
A copy o the letter is posted with the conerences
Following the presentation at the LCWR assemblyon the ndings o the vocation study, many lead-ers expressed interest in obtaining resources tohelp them and their members process the nd-
ings and utilize them in their own institutes. The study, conducted by the National Religious Vocation Coner-
ence (NRVC) and the Center or Applied Research inthe Apostolate (CARA), is based on surveys oreligious institutes, surveys and ocus groups with per-sons who recently entered religious lie, and anexamination o selected religious institutes that havebeen successul in attracting and retainingnew members. The study was designed to identiy andunderstand the characteristics, attitudes, and experiences o the men and women who are com-

Bound in a Blessed Solidarity
L
ast year at this time, November2008, we were immersed inheadlines that surrounded us ona daily, i not moment by moment
basis. It was the time o the US national election orPresident and the all conventions were surprising intheir results as well as their cultural shits. The electiono Barack Obama was a turn o the tide in our history asnot just age but racial lines were crossed in the searchor hope andpeace with a yes, we can attitude oprevious eras.
As our country welcomed its new president, womenreligious o this country received communication oanother unprecedented event in their history. The
apostolic visitation o all congregations o womenreligious was announced both here and at the Vatican.Cardinal Rodes communication was brought to usand the world by Mother Mary Clare Millea, ASCJand Sister Eva Maria Ackerman, FSGM. The rest isbecoming history as we live through each day o thisprocess and the medias varied ascination with it all.
Within less than a month, the national LCWR and itspresidency received communication rom CardinalLevada regarding a doctrinal assessment o ourleadership and activities o the conerence.
Weve reviewed these scenarios beore and daily we arereminded o new elements within each experience andits impact on us personally, communally, and nationally. It seems that the news isnt news but it is always newswith a new twist!
There was a new twist to the national and world news aew weeks ago. President Barack Obama was awardedthe Nobel Prize or Peace. Again, controversy: What
has he done, where are the results, he
has not been president long enough....In the midst o all the world andnational turmoil a person who has notaccomplished resolution or end to any othe chaotic issues o our time is selected tobe honored or peace making. But, ratherthan not accepting this honor, PresidentObama receives it or all o us or whatwe are all hoping or and reaching or as apeople who desire peace.
The turmoil around this honor may be inwhat we all expect rom anyone in leadership. We wantresults! We want veriable acts! We want the deedsdone in our viewing! In act, we may want all o thisdone or us without our being bothered by any o thepersonal eort it may call rom us.
Maybe theres upset with this award because theworld (thats us!) does not honor or award anyoneor instilling hope, or engendering undaunted eortstoward collaboration or the common good. It seemsthat this recognition is not or perection (lack o
mis-steps or even mistakes along the way), but orpersistence in the belie o a common spirit o goodin most people and the ongoing energy o humility tochallenge that good in all peoples or all peoples. Thatgood being respect and peace among peoples.
Women religious in this country were thrust into the eyeo our Church and the world by the apostolic visitationand doctrinal assessment. The chaos created by theprocesses does not seem to have shaken the ocus othe lives and the mission o our sisters and our leaders. The processes may have diverted precious energies,
time, and emotion but not conviction, commitment, andresolve in the belie o the authenticity, value, and God-centeredness o our lives and missions. We continue toexperience at the eye o the swirl o this chaos (that hasbeen created) the pulsating heart o God.
We, too, recognize that we are not perect but we arepersistent in our belie o our mission and our call as

B
arbara Lawler Thom-as, a ormer president
o the Sisters o Char-ity o Nazareth and the 1975LCWR president, died onOctober 8 at age 87.
She was a woman o vi-sion, a woman o courage,a woman o great aith, awoman who had a greatsense o where religious liewas going, said Marga-ret Rodericks, SCN. Wewould not be where we are today i it were not or herleadership.
Joan Chittister, OSB, who ollowed Barbara in theLCWR presidency, wrote, One o the most dicultthings in lie is to say goodbye to someone whose liehas aected your own, to someone whose lie has beenlarger than themselves, to someone--the very memoryo whom--conjures up an image o better times, impor-tant times, meaningul times, lie-changing times.
Barbara Thomas, sister, model and riend, is one othose or me and, I suspect, or many.
Barbara brought a steady aith and an equally steadydirection to a time more marked by chaos and uncer-tainty, Joan added. She had the capacity to bring anaura o certainty to the maelstrom o conusion usheredin by Vatican II and, at the same time, to an the hope init, as well.
Born in 1921, in Richmond, Virginia, she joined hercongregation when she was 21. She was a provincial
rom 1965 to 1972 to sisters in the Northern Kentuckyand Ohio area. In 1972 she assumed leadership o hercongregation which is headquartered in Nazareth,Kentucky.

Coalition Against Human TraffickingMeeting Focuses on Children
S
everal presenters at the September 17 meeting othe Coalition o Catholic Organizations Against
Human Tracking described the vulnerability ochildren and some eorts to address particular situa-tions. Ambassador Maura Harty, senior policy directoro the National Center or Missing and Exploited Chil-dren, provided inormation about a nancial coalitionormed by the US national center and the internationalcenter when reports indicated that the major purchaserso child pornography in the US used credit cards. Morethan a year ago, major credit card issuers engaged theissue o how to combat this practice and agreed to ol-low the money, stop transactions, and identiy purchas-ers. Now nearly 97% o US nancial institutions are
involved, and there has been a 50% drop in direct childporno sites. However, there has been a large increase inpurchase o sites rom low- to high-cost purchases.
The link between child pornography and trackingis largely anecdotal. There is a huge market or childpornography, because children are easily accessible, andmoney rom pornography nances other activities.
Carol Smolenski, director o ECPAT USA (End ChildPornography and Tracking) estimates that 25% o
child sex tourists are rom the US, most o whom arenot pedophiles but situational tourists who see thatwhat is criminal in the US is accepted in other countriesand even say that it helps people who are poor.
ECPAT has sought to work with the travel industry byasking companies to sign a code o conduct. In additionto eorts with hotels, ECPAT has recently approachedairlines. Resistance to signing a code is higher in the USthan in some other countries because here the environ-ment is more litigious. (Worldwide there are almost1000 signers, in the US only our.)
Kathleen Coll, SSJ described the work o ICCR mem-bers to address these corporations in collaboration withECPAT. Meetings with Starwood hotels (e.g., Westin,Sheraton) resulted in an agreement to have a policy.Eorts with Marriott, which has had two cases againstit, resulted in a year-long review, but no signing o thecode. At a shareholder meeting o Delta, shareholderswere responsive to the code.
Because o the ear o litigation, there is a need toshow companies that customers want them to sign on.Further inormation about the code o conduct can be
