A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul,

November 1st and November 2nd - Praying for the dead

November 1st we still celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints even though there is no obligation attached to it this year. This Sunday we celebrate All Souls Day. This is the day when the Church prays for all those who have died and in a special way prays for those souls in Purgatory. A soul in Purgatory is one that died in the state of Grace but continues to be burdened by the punishment due to sin. Our prayers and sacrifices can be offered on behalf of these souls in order to hasten their entrance into heaven.

We have placed a prayer book on a podium at the rear of the church, near the statue of the Pieta', in which you can write the names of those deceased relatives and friends. We will pray for all of the names written in that book during the month of November. Congratulations!

Congratulations to our Junior Varsity Football team on their victory (20-6) over St. Michael's in Wheaton to win the Championship! Now...about those Bears… Thank you!

Thank you to all those who gave to the priests of the parish numerous kind, sweet and generous gifts for Priesthood Sunday last weekend. I believe we have all gained a few pounds so if we are looking particularly rotund, you will know the reason. May Almighty God bless you and keep you.

Saints Peter and Paul School News

The 5th Grade students have been studying exploration in the 1400's and 1500's. Most of the chapter focused on European explorers, their reasons for exploring, and what they found when they arrived at their destinations. The SMART Board review allowed them to review these topics, as well as allowed them to play a round of Jeopardy, which was fun for all! This week, the Kindergarten classes learned about the famous artist Jackson Pollock during art

awareness. We practiced Action Painting by rolling paint-covered marbles over black paper! During class on Monday the junior high Spanish students baked "pan de muertos" a traditional Mexican bread that is often served at Day of the Dead celebrations. The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and Central America on November 2, All Souls' Day. It is a wonderful holiday which honors and remembers family members and friends who have died.

Saints Peter & Paul Catholic School

Did you know that Saints Peter & Paul was among the pioneers in the Naperville area to begin Full Day Kindergarten classes? We also have a great Extended Day Program for our students. Over 80% of our 8th Graders attend area Catholic High Schools including: Benet, St. Francis, Montini, Marmion, Joliet Catholic and Rosary. We are proud to say that among those, 78% of those are currently on the Honor Roll at their school. Paying us a visit is the best way to find out what we are all about and to get a great feel for our welcoming school environment! For more information and/or to schedule a tour please contact our Office at (630) 355-0113. We hope to see you soon!

Religious Education Update

PLEASE HELP! There is an immediate need for two assistants (2nd grade and 5th grade) to help on Wednesday afternoons in the religious education program. Classes meet from 4:15 – 5:30 pm. Contact the religious education office for further information. 2ND GRADE FAMILIES - First Reconciliation will take place on Saturday, November 8th starting at 9:00 AM in the church. Please have your children at the church by 8:45 AM so that they can find their class and attendance can be taken. Plan for about an hour and a half for the service and individual confessions. Note: Saturday second grade classes will celebrate First Reconciliation instead of regular class that morning. BE AWARE! Each week we see dangerous behavior on the part of drivers and students during Religious Education drop off and pick up times. With Daylight Savings Time ending this weekend, it will be dark by the end of weekday classes, creating hazardous situations for our students. As a reminder: Double parking is prohibited on all streets. This is particularly dangerous as children go in between cars and can't be seen. The priority of our volunteer crossing guards is the safety of the children. PLEASE FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTION! This might mean waiting a couple of extra minutes while children are crossing or otherwise moving about. Children are to cross the street only at the corner of Franklin and Ellsworth with the direction of the crossing guard. Please do not encourage your children to run into the street to get into your car.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION!

ELIZABETH MINISTRY As Mary went in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was with a child to help and comfort her, so does our Elizabeth Ministry for all those who are in need. If you have experienced infertility, loss of a pregnancy, an infant or child death, you are not alone, many of our parish families have experienced the same and the Elizabeth Ministry would like to help you through it. On the other hand, if you are expecting for the first time, or you are new parents who just had a baby or adopted a child, the Elizabeth Ministry would like to celebrate with you and offer our services to you. Through prayers, adoration hours, and sharing personal experiences, our ministers will try to bring you some peace and comfort no matter what your situation is. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In the Gospel today, we hear the good news that when we keep our focus on God and serve one another, God exalts us! As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul green envelope, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them.

Envelopes may bwe found at the side and rear entrances of the church and chapel. We may be contacted by calling 630-355-1081. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY

A mother who recently completed our program sent a special thank-you to Jack Flowers saying: "It was such a blessing to myself and my family. I can't thank you enough for the opportunity....I've learned so much and even grown some and I'm eternally grateful for that! Thanks with Love!" We want to share this with every person who supports our ministry in any way. God bless you for helping us give homeless families new hope and new beginnings! For information about THM, call Jack at 630-355-4886.

CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR PRISONERS Companions has again asked our parish to assist in the annual Christmas card collection for prisoners. This token is often the only mail received by the prisoners during the Christmas season. Our intention is to let the imprisoned know that someone is thinking of them at a time when they can feel so alone. The responses we receive speak of the impact we can have.

Receptacles will be found at the back of the Church and Holy Family Chapel to accept your cards. Please sign your name on one or more Christmas cards, omit a return address, and do not seal the envelope. Please do not attach postage stamps to the envelopes of the cards. We are appreciative of separate donations of stamps. Prison authorities permit no stickers, glue, paste, tape or enclosures. A short, “non-preachy” note is acceptable, if you wish. We ask that you be sensitive to the fact that many of these cards will be sent to people of color, so please choose cards which represent a diverse population. Please drop off cards by Sunday, November 16th. Your response is a great comfort to the lonely! If you have any questions, please call Vera Muldoon, 630-355-7491.
