From your Pastor… This weekend, in addition to honoring the Lord’s Day, we will also

celebrate the Feast of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls. With the

Feast of All Saints we honor all those holy men and women throughout

the ages who have been declared saints by the Church. On the Feast of

All Souls we celebrate our loved ones who have died, begging God to

forgive their sins and accept them into the heavenly banquet.

The Feast of All Saints reminds us that all of us are called to be saints,

all of us are called to be holy. To reach this stage often means having

to endure sacrifice and suffering which detaches us from material

things and purifies the soul. Our Patron Saint once said, “Suffering is

the only ladder to get to heaven”; then St. Isadore of Seville proclaims

“The more we are afflicted in this world, the greater is our assurance in

the next; the more sorrow in the present, the greater will be our joy in

the future”; St. Francis de Sales said, “Many would be willing to have

afflictions provided that they not be inconvenienced by them”; and St.

Teresa of Avila boldly proclaimed, “Blessed be He, who came into the

world for no other purpose than to suffer”; finally, St. John of the Cross

wrote, “Whenever anything disagreeable or displeasing happens to you,

remember Christ crucified and be silent.” These are just some examples

from the saints. When we get closer to God we come to know

personally the scripture passage which says, “The Son of Man must

suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the

scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.” It is only when we

follow the way of Jesus that we become saints.

The other feast that we celebrate is the Feast of All souls – all the

faithful departed. As you might know, we pray for all the dead at every

Mass, but especially during the month of November in which we

intensify our prayer. All Souls envelopes are available for you to write

the names of your loved ones who have died so that we can pray for

them during November.

Why do we pray for the dead? We pray so “That the dead may rejoice

forever in the house of the Lord; That the Son of Man may grant his

salvation to those who have died; That the eternal light of salvation may

shine upon those who have died; That those who have died may find

eternal rest; For our deceased relatives and friends, and all the departed,

that they may be gathered into the eternal joy of their heavenly home;

That the dead may be cleansed from all their sins; That the departed

may taste and see the eternal goodness of God; That those who have

died may live forever in the God who is love; That the dead may be called

to perfect union with God forever.” This is the special focus of our

prayer for the month of November.

As we celebrate these two important Feasts, let us ask the Lord that

we might follow the way of the Saints as we pray for salvation for all

those who have died.

Sincerely,

Fr. Miguel Gonzalez

Veneration VS. Adoration Since Ancient times, the Catholic Church has recognized the Infi-nite difference between veneration & adoration ( or what today we call worship). Adoration is the act of giving ourselves to God as the One to whom we owe everything, an act of absolute submis-sion to him. He alone, then, is to be adored, to be worshiped, in the sense. Veneration, on the other hand is a much lesser thing: the paying of appropriate honor to a creature of God who deserves such honor. When we venerate the saints, then, we’re not adoring them as if they are the source of our existence, or worshiping them in the modern sense of that word. We’re simply honoring them.

Atentamente, P. Miguel Gonza lez
