When we act in service to others keeping in mind our social justice principles, how do we make sure we are set on the right path? How do we prepare our minds and hearts to serve God? How do we see how God is at work in our lives? Through prayer. An extension of that prayer is an examination of conscience. The Jesuits call it the “examen” and it could be done each evening. There are five important components. 1. Remind yourself you are in the presence of God. 2. Call to mind anything to which you are grateful. 3. Review the entire day, noticing places of encounter with God. Ask: In this moment did I accept God’s invita- tion? 4. Ask God for forgiveness for your sins. 5. Ask God for the grace needed for the next day. Many of us are quite busy. So while we know that God is with us, we often don’t pause to notice. And not noticing is like ne- glecting to acknowledge a favor a friend has done for us. Thirty - Third Sunday in ordinary Time

CHRIST THE KING THAT HE WOULD REIGN IN OUR HEARTS

In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical letter Quas Primas, in response to growing nationalism and secularism around the world. He had the foresight to realize that secularism could soon wage awful wars against the Church. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI’s encyclical gave Catholics hope and—while governments of men around them crumbled— the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ “reign[s] ‘in the hearts of men,’ both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind.” While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened. Religious liberty gives us the ability not just to worship at Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick. During this time when we come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted. Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threat-ened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us—this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indi-visible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Source: United States Catholic Conference of Bishops. “The Kingship that Bears Witness to Truth”. usccb.org

Blessed Santia Szymkowski, Polish Sister, Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lord of Sorrows

Blessed Santia was born to a wealthy family in 1910 in Poland. In her youth, Santia only wanted to serve the Lord. She found ways to serve the needy in her neighborhood, even as a young girl. During World War II, her convent was made to serve the Nazis and later Allied prisoners of war. She was known for her kindness and charity, bringing a sense of peace to the prisoners. They called her the “Angel of Goodness.”

After contracting TB, she was allowed to leave the service, but chose to remain in her community, serving others. “God’s will is my will,” she said. “Whatever He wants, I want.”

Santia died in 1942, shortly after making her final vows.

MULTI-CULTURAL MASS/DINNER THANKS!

Over 150 parishioners and their children attended last Satur-day’s 13th Annual Multi-Cultural Mass and Dinner - a memora-ble occasion to celebrate our diversity and unity as brothers and sisters in Christ. Many wore cultural apparel and brought deli-cious homemade dishes from their native countries. Our fabu-lous Sunday 5 pm Mass Youth/Young Adult Choir provided entertainment. Proceeds of the dinner, approximately $1600, will go toward the Queen of Apostles Youth/Young Adult “Pilgrims” (currently 13) who will travel to the 2016 World Youth Day in Poland next summer. They represent our cultural diversity and the future of our church. Therefore, the Social Jus-tice Group supports them in attending World Youth Day - an exciting time to meet Pope Francis and share faith, discipleship and friendship. Special thanks to all those who made this a wonderful evening Mass: The Solchenbergers (altar display), Kathy Salazar and musicians, Dirk Maason (slides), multi-language readers-Lavita Fernandes, Judith Blight, Sophia Paul, Paola Medina, Ailish and Lily Kimber. Dinner: Queen of Apostles 8th graders/Mitty stu-dent volunteers: Gelaine Esperacion, Hannah Petterson, Jasmine and Joseph Rios, mom Pearl Rios, Sona Shridhar, Khan Tran, Joanna Miakisz; and Pete Peal (sound system) Please support our “Pilgrim” travelers by donating on their web site: wwwtiny-url.com/QofAWYD or bring your cash/check to the Rectory.
