What should students bring to uni?
• Ask your neighbour• Don’t forget to introduce yourselves first• You’ll need to share this information with someone else soon
– So … you might want to take some notes.

AMBER For most Australian university units of study, expect to spend around 6 hours each week reading, notetaking, researching (which involves a lot of reading) and planning and writing assignments. The remainder is usually dedicated to lectures, tutorials and getting organised.

AMBER So approximately 60% of the learning you do at university will be from the reading and writing that you complete, much of which you will do independently.

LUKE Activity: What's the difference between prescribed, recommended and additional readings – summarise what you remember from the video with a partner. Most units will mention three types of readings. Prescribed are the readings you must do; working through these readings will usually help you become familiar with key terminology and important ideas. Recommended readings are readings that you should do – try to at least get through a few of them each week. They will help you broaden your knowledge of a topic and are a great source of information for assignments! Finally, there are Additional readings, which you could do if you have time. These are a great source of information for assignments and may allow you to explore an interest that you have in a topic. The notes you take from these readings will help you to understand and recall the most important information that you read, and start to form connections between the ideas you are learning about. All this reading and notetaking ultimately contributes to your preparation for assignments, exams and, in the long term, your development as a professional. LUKE Most of the reading you do will come from three different types of sources. Journal articles are usually between 8 – 15 pages long. Chapters may come from text books. These introduce you to the key terms and ideas of a discipline or topic. Chapter from edited books tend to be written at a higher level and often explore topics in more detail. You may also need to read reports or professional documents relevant to your discipline. These are often prepared by government, professional bodies or non-government organisations. You will need to access many of these sources online: your lecturers will not provide you with printed copies.

AMBER NB – some lectures (such as in Engineering/maths ) may find lecture fare more focused on problem solving. You'll learn a lot more from your lectures if you prepare before hand – so spend a little bit of time skimming the slides (usually available on blackboard) and required reading/s. How you take notes in lectures can vary a lot – depending on whether your subject has a exam and how your lecturer presents the content. Focus on understanding main points and noting information that is still confusing so you can follow up later. Tutorials are usually more interactive, and you'll be expected to complete readings before a tutorial so you have something to talk about. Tutorials are a chance to build on and apply the knowledge you have learned in your readings/lectures so skipping readings before tutes means you don’t get as much learning as you might have if you completed the readings before hand. Short on time? At least skim read before the tute! LUKE: preparing for pracs/labs? Finally, reviewing your notes is super important if you have exams – but even if you don’t, once your start working on your assessment - reviewing your notes helps making sense of core topics which you can then apply in your assessment.

What tool works for YOU ?
Presenter
Presentation Notes
AMBER Activity: What tools and technologies do you use to make notes? Elicit some ideas from participants. I advocate pen and paper because it’s a less automatic process than typing and so we have to think more about the information, BUT we can all choose our own adventures especially if we have convenient devices and/or are into saving trees… You might find that at uni there is a lot more content and research you need to make notes for – so it's a good time to try some new ways of making notes to find a system that is efficient and effective – is it helping you learn? Is it taking too long? Ask yourselves these questions and make some changes if you need to. (Note all images are open source from Morguefile: www.morguefile.com)

AMBER Organising your notes is also important – especially when preparing for a research assessment or to study for a content heavy exam! Does your study desk or laptop look like this? How can you organise your notes so that you save time during stressful points in the semester? Try some optiosn and find a system that works for you!
