TRANSCRIPT
NEAA has lost yet another valued member of our Elkhound community. On September 27, 2016, Vicky
Zumwalt crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Vicky devoted me and talent to the Norwegian Elkhound. She
served as a past president of NEAA, NEAA treasurer, a successful breeder of champions, and a mentor to
many. We extend condolences to her family and many friends.
All who a ended the Norwegian Elkhound Club of Southeastern Michigan’s Regional Specialty last week-
end had a great me. Elkhounders came from Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin,
and, of course, Michigan to celebrate our wonderful breed. The weather on Friday was a bit dicey, but the
club made up for it with warm hospitality and an awesome banquet – compliments to the chef and to all
those who contributed.
Suppor ng our Regional clubs is vital. Not only do the clubs benefit, you get to know the members of
these clubs, meet new people, exchange ideas, and see dogs that you’ve not had the opportunity to
watch. Here is a list of upcoming Regionals which, hopefully, many of you will be able to a end: Garden
State Norwegian Elkhound Club - October 16th, Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of Minnesota – October
22nd & 23rd, and the Sacramento Sierra Norwegian Elkhound Club – October 28th.
NEAA is looking for “a few good men and women.” During the last week of September an email was sent
to all NEAA members lis ng the 2016 Nomina ng Commi ee members and their contact informa on. If
you are interested in running for a posi on on the board, please contact one of the commi ee members
listed in that email.
Finally, coming soon – NEAA Cavalcade of Events in May 2017 and changes to the rules for Futurity/
Maturity. Please watch for updated informa on on both of these items.
Take care

Sept 30, 2016 Following our hot summer, we have now started the "rainy season" for fall. I'm sure many of you have experienced floods in your area, yards and basements. We have been lucky with just a bit of water in the basement that was quickly dried out with a fan. The upside is that I haven't had to water the garden for about 2 months! Though I do think my dogs are ge ng a bit sick of rainy days. As summer ended, we have had a quite a list of ill or injured people. Foremost in my mind is Vicky Zumwalt, who was hospital-ized in August, for pneumonia, and passed away yesterday (September 27) I do not have details and am looking for someone who knows her be er than I ,to write a special goodbye to her, as she was much loved and a well-known and respected breeder. Her kennel was Royal Crown whose bloodlines are entwined in many of our dogs. She also was a past president of the NEAA. In August I heard of the following…Lisa Ann Zilney injured her knee and later experienced a migraine. Chris ne Tilburg could sympathize with that, as she con nues to have chronic, painful migraine headaches. There was trouble with legs; Michelle Bendickson injured her ankle, Dona Barsul had celluli s of her leg with ensuing surgery, and Bob Lawton had a hip replacement. We hope you all are healing and ready to resume walking without pain. Cindy Gustafson was ill in Aug and recov-ered. Amy Peterson experienced a fall and dog bite at her job. I hope that was not too serious, although I am sure painful. Now in September, Dona Barsul with con nued leg issue, and Dennis Bell who tore a ligament in his heel. I hope these quickly will resolve and you will be on your feet again. Just in me, as this is the me of year when Yellow Jackets are aggressive, I am finishing the buildup process of allergy shots to minimize the danger of wasp and hornet s ngs. I have had several anaphylac c reac ons that sent me to the ER. I am NOT allergic to honey bees. A er all, they are the GOOD guys. So as we move on to fall, let’s try to stay on our feet, and healthy. Please let me know if anyone needs some sunshine and thank you to those who keep me informed. Kari Olson NEAA Sunshine Commi ee

Vicky Zumwalt
Vicky Zumwalt was a tiny lady but a powerful, positive and contagiously humorous Elkhound person. Vicky was a magnet for new prospective people as she drew them into our Elkhound family. She shared her love and wisdom of the breed. She also had a vast knowledge of medical and homeopathic practices and always took time to help any Elkhound person with their questions or concerns. She was fiercely loyal to all of her Elkhounds and treated them like royalty. She was an exceptional gift to the Elkhound world and she will be deeply missed by all of us who loved her. Vicky is pictured with “Thomas” (Ch Greyplume’s Tommy Bahama) getting a group placement under Pat Trotter. Vicky had a very strong tie to this dog and she always had some wonderful stories to tell about him.

Report of the Corresponding Secretary:
Karen had sent out her list of new membership applica-tions to be reviewed by the board.
Report of the Treasurer:
Mary Jo was absent.
Report from the Committee(s):
Marketing Committee- Lisa Peterson joined the meeting at 7:05 PM CST. Lisa asked the board what the goals of this committee are? For example- to increase membership (and by how much). Strat-egy and tactics need to be considered. Lisa sug-gested creating a survey to the membership using Survey Monkey to get ideas. Lisa offered to create the survey questions. Money needs to be allotted for this on-line survey. The available literature needs to be updated in the registration packages, for the judge’s material and public brochures. Lisa asked for administrative access to the Facebook page. The board agreed on this request and will contact Margaret Williamson/Jennifer Ellis for ac-cess. Lisa said Mandy Smithers had contacted her to offer her help with promoting Junior Showman-ship. Lisa suggested the President write a wrap-up report of the board meetings and send it out using mass emails. Lisa said she would be the marketing coordinator and her team would include: Mandy Smithers, Ray Vaturro as the Judge’s Education committee chair, Patty Brooks as the membership chair, Karen Freudendorf as the LCAC chair, Ken Walker and Mary Albee as the Website design committee. Lisa left the meeting at 7:25 PM CST.
Education Committee- Ray Vaturro thanked Bon-nie Turner for organizing the Judge’s seminar at the recent National. Ray said he received numer-ous complements and positive feedback from those who attended. There were 15 attendees. The re-production seminar was presented by Alisa Kelly-who provided all of her reproduction literature for free. Ideas for the next reproduction seminar have been offered as nutrition, alternative medicine and genetics. Ray said he received a request from the Rose City Cluster (in Portland, OR) for a Judge’s seminar in 1/17. There will a Judge’s seminar cov-ering genetics in May, 2017 at Cavalcade of Events. Ray said he will be having a meeting with the Judge’s Education Committee later this week. They will discuss the judge’s mentor list and the available speaker list. They are also going to dis-cuss the working rules for the 30/7 mentors and what needs to be updated. The on-line material needs to be reviewed and updated. Ray suggested the provisional judges be utilized as much as possi-ble.
Delegate Report-Lori said she presented her Dele-gate’s Report at the National membership board meeting. Lori stated she did not attend the latest Delegates’ meeting since she was the National Specialty. The next Delegate’s meeting will be on
09/12/16.
Old Business:
Judges’ Selection Questionnaire- The Board re-viewed the questionnaire Libby Parmer-Smith and Robin Rhoden had written for potential foreign judges to answer. Leslie said she would work on the wording of the questionnaire and see about getting it translated into Norwegian.
Futurity/Maturity (also under New Business)- Sandy Peters sent her suggestions for new rules and reg-ulations to update the working rules for the Futuri-Maturity eligibility. Bonnie made a motion to accept Sandy’s proposal for her current changes to the working rules. Lori seconded the motion. The mo-tion passed to accept Sandy Peters’ current update on the working rules for the Futurity/Maturity guide-lines. The Board is also discussing the need to fur-ther update the working rules to correct a gap in time so all nominated puppies would be eligible to participate and not have ‘aged out’. The dates would need to be changed from April 1- June 30 to include all nominated puppy ages. A suggestion was made to change the rules so Maturity goes up to 36 months. This idea was then suggested to be placed on a membership survey. The survey would also to include changing the nomination period from 12 weeks of age to 6 months of age. Lori se-conded the motion.
Amy Peterson reported the NEAA Yearbook was a success- all copies sold out. There will be a second printing of 20 books. Some people paid Amy direct-ly and some paid Mary Jo. All Yearbooks have been paid for.
2017 Cavalcade- Bill Totten joined the meeting at 8:20 CST. NEAA consider an all-breed agility show to help pay the additional cost of renting the large indoor arena to hold the agility trial. The additional fee for one day is $1000. Bill will research the host hotels in the area. The Holiday Inn-6 Flags has been suggested. ***NEAA will need to hold the contract with any of the nearby hotels with a credit card. NEAA will have to research the acquiring a corporate credit card.
2018 National Specialty- NEAA is waiting to hear from Greater Cleveland Norwegian Elkhound Club to see if they are interested in hosting/ offering a regional specialty with the nationals. NEAA can host the Rally/Obedience/Agility trials since GCNEC would have to re-apply for their perfor-mance permit. NEAA received responses from 4 regional clubs regarding hosting the regional spe-cialty- all 4 said they would not be interested. There are 4 universal sites that AKC recognizes for Par-ent Club to hold National Specialties at- West Springfield, MA, Brooksville, FL, Eukanuba Hall, Wilmington, OH and Purina Farms, Gray Summit, MO. Purina Farms is the most popular. The discus-sion on this topic was tabled until the next meeting.
Lori Webster left the meeting at 9:05 PM CST.
(Con nued from page 12)
(Con nued on page 14)

New Business:
NEAA discussed the recent DNA test results sent to the Board by Barbara Berganska. The Health Committee suggested those who wish to review the results should be able to go to the web link that will be posted in the NE News. The web link to the OFA site should also be published in the NE News.
NEAA received a letter to the Board from Maggie Mott. Maggie’s letter was appreciated and taken under consideration for numerous suggestions.
The NEAA Board agreed to send out the board meeting minutes via mass e-mail as soon as they have been approved for print. Leslie will contact Ken Walker to get the RSECNEAA.net account activated.
There will be no meeting in August. The next NEAA Board meeting will be 09/12/16 since the 5th is Labor Day.
Ray made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Bob second-ed the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 9:55 PM CST.

frequently spoke with experienced hunters, and those who had
hunted with Norwegian Elkhounds. In a previous ar cle “Tree
Dogs” I included informa on from a man who sold his
elkhounds mainly for hun ng. A dog selected for performance,
an elkhound who needs to hunt or do agility or tracking s ll
needs to have good conforma on. Of course with my
background in versa lity, I believe our dogs can be all three. A
show dog can s ll be a pet, and a pet can hunt or do
performance ac vi es.
A er talking with Joel, a breeder of the hun ng
Norwegian Elkhounds, I wanted to learn more about raccoon
hun ng and the use of Norwegian Elkhounds as “tree dogs”. So
on a beau ful sunny July day, I packed up my two champion
elkhounds , Baldur and Brenne and drove a few miles north to
Plymouth, Wisconsin where the SUNDOWN COON HUNTERS
CLUB was holding a benefit hunt for the Special Olympics.
There were to be field trials, water races, an AKC bench show
and an AKC World Qualifying Nite Hunt. The elkhounds could
not par cipate but breeds eligible were Treeing Walkers,
Blue cks, Redbones, Black and Tans and English Coonhounds.
As I mingled with the hunters, the elkhounds a racted
a lot of a en on. Many of the coonhounds bayed at my “odd”
hounds but quite a few of the friendly folks
par cipa ng or just specta ng knew what breed I
had. They certainly were more familiar with
Norwegian Elkhounds than I expected and more so
than the average people I have met. In fact, a number
of the hunters stopped to tell me of either elkhounds
that they had hunted with themselves, or to tell a
story about someone else they knew . I sure
enjoyed their stories! And it seems that there is an
elkhound in Ohio that has won pre y many ribbons
and trophies for hun ng raccoons.
My 7 year old male, “Baldur”, didn’t seem to
be interested in anything going on above grass, but 18
month old “Brenne” got a whiff of coon scent and
when she saw the hounds on track , began to tug ,
pull and bark. She carried on something awful and
wanted to run with them. When the hounds barked

“treed” , she also opened with her high bark joining in the deep baying of the Walker’s and the Blue ck’s song. The hunters
and their families watching all chuckled at her an cs as she tried her best to get included in the ac on.
In the field trial, a “cast” of four hounds must follow a trail made by a drag of coon scent to a tree where a stuffed
raccoon in a cage is hung on a branch. In the water race, again a “cast “ of four hounds swim in a pond, following the scent of
that cage with the stuffed raccoon on a pulley line above the water. It was great fun to watch and whole families rooted for
their dogs. No live raccoons were used for either of these events.
(Back then some of us elkhound owners wished we could devise a similar test for elkhounds where “Eau de moose”
scent was used and a trail could be laid for our elkhounds) . The scent could lead to a tree, and rules would need to be laid out
for our breed. You see way back then we wanted an AKC hun ng test for elkhounds. In the intervening years, we never did get
it going but look now how Barn Hunt has caught on with our breed. We have been determined for our dogs to hunt something
to prove their hun ng ability.)
A er that I started to get le ers, in response to my request in the Full Cry Hunters magazine. I heard from raccoon
and squirrel hunters in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan , Pennsylvania, Ohio, North and South Carolina.
Some were city dwellers, just hun ng on the weekends for recrea on. Some were farmers whose elkhounds kept the
cornfields from being damaged by raccoons. A few even men oned there was no AKC hun ng test for our breed, and one was
even looking for a puppy to buy But there was one thing they all agreed on. Not only is the Norwegian Elkhound a fantas c
“tree” dog, but a great family companion and pet. . One gentleman from Ohio, only hunts squirrels with his elkhounds, but has
also trained them in agility. During the dreary winter months he takes them and a mini-agility course to nursing homes and
ins tu ons to brighten the long days of the injured , elderly or terminally ill children.
It was a shame back then that with all the poin ng, retrieving, Spaniel, Beagle and Coonhound tests that the AKC
provided nothing for the elkhound. We have truly been an “orphan” breed among hun ng dogs. Our breed wants to hunt,
whether they are “show” dogs. “obedience” dogs, pets or hunters. This was recently verified by two elkhounds who didn’t
(Con nued from page 15)

even need a tree. It was a very foolish raccoon who strolled into the South Milwaukee yard of Ch. Vikiro Belle’s Desperado and
Ch. KCK Felony’s Shady Lady one hot summer night. I will spare you the details but Becky and Ken Thompson’s “Rado” and
“Shady” made sure the raccoon didn’t leave under his own power. These two “show” dogs and pets remembered that they
were hunters too!
I truly believe that when we are placing our pet puppies, we will be missing a whole sales market if we exclude hun ng
homes. Hun ng was the PURPOSE and is s ll in the NATURE of the Norwegian Elkhound. All of these hunters that I
communicated with demonstrated the same love , care and affec on towards their companions that “show” and “obedience”
people feel, maybe MORE! When you think of it from the Norwegian Elkhound’s point of view, which would make him
happier , earning his championship, then re ring to rest in a kennel or become a couch potato, or romping through the woods
with his owner , following fascina ng smells and looking for squirrels to bark at or raccoons to chase up a tree? I know for a
certainty , which my dogs would choose.
I thanked the SUNDOWNERS for their hospitality and all of the owners who took me to write me and share a li le bit
about their beloved hun ng elkhounds.
With the advent of Barn Hunt opening up to all breeds three years ago, there have been quite a few elkhound owners
who jumped at the chance to let their dogs prove their hun ng ins nct. Its safe, its approved by AKC to recognize the tles and
now we have a way to let our dogs have fun at the same me. Yes, they are hun ng rats, not a moose or bears, but it is also
safe for the dog and owner, shows a willingness to hunt… and is a heck of a lot of fun. According to the Barn Hunt LLC website,
there have been 48 Norwegian Elkhounds who have tled to date.
40 Elkhounds passing Ins nct (this is a pass or fail test not required to earn the novice tle and not recognized by AKC.)
33 Elkhounds earned Novice tles
16 Elkhounds earned Open tles
6 Elkhounds earned Senior tles
3 Elkhounds earned Master tles
1 Elkhound earned Champion tle x 2 and also won a Na onal Championship
Elkhounds frequently win High in Class at the barnhunts, over terrier and hound breeds.
Thank you Barn Hunt LLC for allowing our wonderful hun ng breed to compete and thank you AKC for recognizing our
prowess at hun ng, finally.

NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA INC
NOTES TO THE TREASURER’S REPORT
FOR THE QUARTER AND THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2016
Purpose of the Treasurer’s Report - the Treasurer’s Report presents the financial results of the associa on’s opera ons and ac vi es that occurred during a specific period of me. It does not reflect the results of any one event because that typically spans mul ple repor ng periods. Instead – a er each event such as a na onal, futurity, cavalcade or auc on - a separate report is published showing the complete financial results of that one event. Special reports showing the financial results of the 2016 Futurity / Maturity and Na onal Specialty events are also included in this edi on of NE News. Timing differences affect the numbers – for example dues appear light this year because dues renewal did not start un l na onal events week so less dues than typical were collected by June 30. Transfers – dona ons to special funds, trust funds and AKC-CHF, and expenses paid from special funds or trust funds are ini ally processed through the opera ng account and then transferred to or from the appropriate special or trust accounts. As of June 30, 2016 net transfers of $307 were due from the opera ng account to special and trust funds - transfers were made in the first quarter of our new year. 2016 Events – the net proceeds from certain events and ac vi es are designated to benefit certain special funds as shown on the 2016 Events Report included in this edi on. These amounts were transferred to the special funds in the first quarter of our new year. Duty of Board of Directors and general members - as a small non-profit organiza on NEAA relies upon close oversight by its Board of Directors and general members to ensure appropriate security and use of its assets, and the accuracy and completeness of its financial records. It is an important duty of every board member and every general member to carefully review the financial reports and ask ques ons. Independent Financial Review – another important control is the annual review of the financial records by an independent person or member appointed by the Board. The review for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016 has not been completed so the annual totals in this treasurer’s report remain subject to adjustment pending comple on of the annual review. An official final report for the year ended June 30, 2016 will be published a er the independent review has been completed. Ques ons? If you have ques ons or comments about the treasurer’s report or NEAA’s finances - contact Treasurer Mary Jo Benede at 412-364-4937 or [email protected]

ILLUSTRATED GUIDE
The Norwegian Elkhound Standard has been in existence for Many Years. Every breed has a standard—a docu-
ment that is like a blueprint that details what that par cular breed should look like—what is acceptable and what
is not. The standard is applied as a guide to structure, color, height, weight, eye and coat color, ear-set and move-
ment. It covers all aspects of a breed and guides in the selec on of suitable breeding stock for future genera ons.
The Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of America has recently developed an illustrated guide containing visual aids
that assist in clarifying for the reader what an elkhound should be.
This Illustrated Guide is available for download from the Educa on Tab
on the NEAA Website.

HAVE YOU SOLD A PUPPY LATELY? In order to encourage new puppy buyers to join the NEAA, the Board has authorized new owners of Norwegian Elkhound puppies to be entitled to two (2) complimentary issues of the NE News. If you sell a puppy to a non-NEAA member, certainly encourage them to join the NEAA. And as a little incentive, simply submit their name and e-mail address as a new puppy buyer to Ken Walker at [email protected], and Ken will enable the new owners to receive the complimentary issues of the NE News at no charge.
Hey, did you hear? NEAA is now on Facebook!

Browse Line. Dappled shadows in the shrubs moved back and forth revealing the browse line of a large bull moose. We were in Bull territory along the banks of the Kashwitna River in central Alaska hoping to spot our big game animal.
My guide Blaine Humphries, steered us towards a narrow sand bar near some willows and Birch. we unloaded our Stainless steel rifles got out of the canoe and squished our way to the Moose grocery store. The Bull had been there hours before us but, that moment captured only the evidence of his earlier presence. He had stripped all the edible leaves off of Alder and Willow branches from roughly 3 to 8 feet above the bank of the river. Alces Gigas can get to be 7 feet tall at the hump thus enabling him to eat forage from ground level to roughly 10 feet high. The absence of leaves on living branches tells the tale of feeding behavior and clearly indicates where the moose feed. I had Blaine turn himself into a photographer and record my image against this browse line to illustrate how big these bulls can be in size. I am 5 feet 9 inches tall. It is easy to see my waist and below 36 inches there are leaves in abundance. Yet, from my waist to roughly 9 feet tall the leaves are all gone!! The second photo show a Alder devoid of leaves That tree told me there were moose feeding in the middle of a Spruce/Birch forested meadow.
The real question is: Can an Elghund hunt in this type of terrain? Can a hunter shoot safely? You can only see 5 to 15 yards into the bushes and trees. It is dense habitat. Moose can easily step over small trees. I’d say no. We discovered after beaching the canoe and going into the forest 75 yards, that a Moose had winded us and maneuvered behind us completely invisible to us visually, audibly, and olfactorily. The trees absorbed all sounds. As we returned to the freight canoe, we came across the fresh hoof prints in the mossy forest floor. The giant of the woods had evaded us.
My definition of a Browser eats leaves, twigs, aquatic plants, and grasses not HTML files on the World Wide Web.
