Dear Membership,

I cannot believe that it is already August. Where has the first half of 2018 gone?— me is flying. I can remember thinking sum-

mer lasted forever and now it is gone in the blink of an eye

It is hot today in North Texas but it is not 110-- we have cooled off to the 90s, so I am grateful for the relief from the summer

heat—it makes going between the office and the court house to the office much more bearable. The dogs are eager to come in

between noon and 2 so that they can cool off. Our air-condi oner is running constantly and that appears to be the case in lots

of the USA.

The Board is working on establishing a working budget to ensure NEAA is on track financially.

Work on the 2019 NEAA Cavalcade is under way. Please let us know if there is a job you are just dying to do or one you are

willing to do as there are so many jobs that need volunteers.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. Keep you and your Great Dogs Cool.

Annual dues ($30 for individuals, $40 for families) are payable to NEAA, Inc. between July 1st and September 30th. Remit checks in U.S. funds to the NEAA Treasurer.

Aug 1, 2018 Happy Summer to all, Wisconsin is having lovely weather, for me, and Briskke who do not like it so hot. Today the high is supposed to be 77. Perfect for gardening, and I need to get out there. Weeds are calling and with the rain from last night, they will pull easier. Son Eric kindly fogged so mosquitos will not be a problem. I have not heard about too many illnesses for the past month or so, but unfortunately we did lose some members, and a family member. William Law, who had been a member passed away and then I heard that long me member, Nancy Boden, lost her ba le with cancer, and also passed away. I met Nancy in Illinois, years ago, and was so happy to see she made it to the 2018 NEAA Na onal. She was always so posi ve and friendly . She will be missed . Her kennel name is Magnolia Ridge. Mar Kincaid lost her brother. I am so sorry for these losses and know the club members extend the most sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones. Lori Machacek had cataract surgery, and I hope you are now seeing be er! Hope you don’t need glasses any more. Some do, like me, but its s ll a clearer life a erwards. Cindy Gustafson is about to have hip surgery, so we wish her good luck and quick healing. We hope this surgery really helps you in your love of nature, kayaking and hiking in the woods. The harvest of moose has steadily been going down for the past ten years, 39.900 in 1999 compared to just 31.600 last year, about 20% decrease. The moose population is under strict control and the number of licenses is handed out according to the inventory of the moose population taken after the hunting season the previous year. The increasing wolf population gets the blame for the reduced number of moose, but there are exceptions to the rule. Last winter 26 moose were found dead because of malnutrition on an island in Northern Norway. In addition about 1000 moose are killed each year due to traffic accidents, i.e. collision with cars and trains. The success rate for hunters is all the time around 80%. Moose hunting starts on September 25.

Notes for the photo: The Parmesan Family again contributed to the Bread Baking contest. The Squash Blossom entry from Arizona was disqualified for not using Extra Virgin Olive Oil. And, for the third year in a row Double Field Champion-- Siamese Surprise—brought in the first limit before noon!

Summer has been HOT…but “Brecon” kept her cool!

(New Champion) Kestos Yankee Dreamer

From that little puppy who left her native Wales, sitting on the front seat of the rental

car en route to Heathrow and then making the big trip across the pond at a very young age, “Brecon” has

bloomed into the lovely type of bitch we knew she would be. A double Kriega granddaughter, Brecon was

bred by Mrs. B.R. Stokes of the world‐famous Kestos Elkhounds of Builth Wells, Powys.

She is an OFA CHIC dog, holding an Excellent hip rating and current eye clearance.

Brecon finished her title at the Twin Brooks Kennel Club on July 15th going Winners Bitch, Best of Winners

and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed under Mr. Richard Reynolds.

THERAPY DOG - READ TO ROVER – BRISKKE’S SUMMER

It was a summer with a full schedule for

Read to Rover, the reading program that

has children reading to dogs. Briskke has

been a “read to” dog for six years. We

a ended six days of the local summer

school for the reading class, and a number

of summer reading groups at libraries. In

addi on, Briskke and I taught two summer

school classes for Small Animal Care with

the topic of therapy dogs and versa lity.

Briskke was in demand. I know there are

many other elkhounds out there doing

similar work , but I thought I would share some tender moments we caught on

camera this summer.

President Libby Parmer-Smith called the meeting to order at 230pm CST.

Roll Call: Present: Libby Parmer-Smith, Ray Vaturro, Robin Rhoden, Debbie Walker, Flo Tumolo, Lori Webster, Dominique Mercurio, Roland Masse, Bonnie Turner. Absent: none

Attendance : 79 members signed in , and 14 Regional clubs were represented. 48 voting members were needed for a quorum . This number was reached.

Approval of last meeting Minutes: A request for additions or corrections to the March minutes as published in the Ne News was made by Libby. There were no additions or corrections. A vote was taken and the minutes were approved as published.

Report of the President: President, Libby Parmer–Smith reported that she felt the board has had a successful year in 2017-2018.The board began the year by setting goals for NEAA and met the following : Organizational Structure adds a Board member as

liaison to various committees Production of a Master Calendar ( which will be

place on the website) to reference certain activities The Code of Ethics has been updated and a

proposed Constitution and By Laws amendment has been sent to AKC for review and input and then will be sent to membership for a vote. The amendment allows allows board members to serve a 2 year term with a maximum of 2 terms ( no more than 4 years total) . It will also stagger positions up for election.

The Lois and Ray Mills funds have been invested in an on-line bank to receive the highest interest rate.

The new website is still in the process of being completed. A Paypal account has been opened and will be attached to the new website.

The Education committee has established a select number of Judges Education seminars across the US to be presented by knowledgeable judges/breeders. The Board approved a stipend for the traveling presenter to offset some of the costs.

A Membership survey was conducted to gather information on whether the NEAA should have an annual National and whether Purina Farms will be a permanent venue.

This survey was sent via an electronic voting system. Additionally, a mass email system was used to get immediate information out quickly.

The Board approved money for the purchase of a traveling Elkhound display for Meet the Breed events. This display was used at the AKC National – Royal Canin event in Orlando FL in December.

The Membership committee has been meeting monthly to gather ideas on how to reach out to new members.

Report of the Corresponding Secretary: The Corresponding Secretary had no report. Report of the Treasurer: Flo submitted statements on Funds, 2017 Cavalcade of Events, Financial Position, and Fund Activities. Handouts were given at sign in. Flo asked for comments. None were received. Flo advised that the issues with the clubs Delaware Corporation status have been handled and we are now a Corporation in good standing. Flo also mentioned that she is working on establishing a working budget for upcoming events to help facilitate the smooth operation of such events.

Report of the Committees: Futurity/Maturity: Libby asked for a volunteer to

train for the Futurity/ Maturity coordinators position as Sandy Peters would like to retire from the position. This committee is also in need of another member to help in looking at changes to the event as currently run.

Welcome Bags: Robin Rhoden thanked the clubs and members who contributed to the welcome bags. The clubs were SE Michigan, Northern Illinois, Minnesota, Southern California, Garden State and Columbine. The individuals contributing were Mandy Smithers, Libby Parmer-Smith, Lee Ann Breading, and Jim and Marie Kiessel. Robin also thanked all who helped stuffing the bags on Tuesday.

Education: Ray Vaturro advised that 40 members attended the seminar on Canine Cancer with our speaker Dr Jaime Modiano. Ray also advised that 5 prospective new Elkhound judges attended the Judges seminar.

Website/Social Media: Mary Albee advised that new website is almost ready for launch and should be up and running within 45 days. A member asked for a frozen semen database to be added to the site. Mary will look in to the feasibility and information needed to accomplish this. Ken Walker asked that anyone experiencing issues with the website please contact [email protected] . This will guarantee the quickest response to any issues.

Health Committee: Leslie Forrest gave an overview of our two health research funds. The NEAA research fund is not a 501c3 fund. The monies in this fund may be used toward any research the committee and board feel is worthy. The second fund is the AKC Canine Health Donor advised fund.

This fund is 501c3 eligible. Leslie stated that the monies in both of these funds come from the membership. Memorials, Auction proceeds of 12.5%, and Purina Partnership weight circles proceeds all contribute to these funds.

Membership Committee: Nona Krena spoke on behalf of the committee. Committee members include chair Mary Jo Benedetti (chair), Glenda Haggerty, Connie Schulte, and Nona Krena. The committee has been working on a method of contacting new and lapsed members personally. The committee is also looking at the application process to see if there are ways to improve this. The committee is compiling regional club rosters and looking for trends in membership numbers. They are also investigating a You Tube channel as a way to make contact with potential members as well as new and existing members. If any member is interested in joining this committee please contact the board.

Judges Selection Committee: Carol Slattery advised that only 3 members submitted nominations to the Committee for National judges for 2020. She asked that anyone wanting to submit names for the following specialties please do so. The submission requirements can be found on the website in the working rules.

Ken Walker spoke to the membership about the Meet the Breeds booth set up designed and implemented by Ken and Deb Walker, Mary Albee and Mandy Smithers. This display is designed and created to be portable and available to all member clubs as needed for Breed promotion purposes.

AKC has asked that the National club find a volunteer to review the AKC Marketplace for Elkhounds and report any discrepancies to the board for submission to AKC.

Old Business:

By Laws amendment: The amendment has been sent to AKC for approval. Until we hear from them we are at a stand still.

Code of Ethics amendment: sent to AKC for approval as well.

New Business:

The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship award was awarded to Bill Totten .

Libby also bestowed special awards to Bonnie Turner, Bill Totten and Leslie Trapnell for all of their work getting the 2018 National off the ground.

The 2019 Cavalcade of events will take place May 12-19,2019 at Purina Farms. Bill apologized to Northern California and Potomac Valley for the conflict in dates but this was only available date for our show at this location. The judges will be Eugene Blake (conformation), Ed Hall (conformation), Jim Comunale (obedience), Dianne Allen (Rally), and Tom Slattery( Agility). We will be offering a herding instinct trial as well , judge to be determined. 2019 Cavalcade will also offer the Best of the Best.

2020 National will be held at Purina Farms May 3-9,2019. No regional clubs have expressed interest in holding a regional in conjunction or in hosting this National, but the Board is still open to any such bids.

Adjournment: Nona Krena made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 329pm ct. Seconded by Ann Smith. Meeting was adjourned. A Breed mentor panel discussion was held immediately following the annual meeting. Panelists were Marie Peterson, Karen Elvin and Dee Queen.

Report of the Treasurer: Flo submitted statements of Fund activities, 2017 Cavalcade final statement, and statement of funds for months ending 3/31/18. A motion

was made by Debbie and seconded by Robin to accept the reports as submitted. Vote was taken and motion passed.

Delegate Report: No report as Lori was not present at meeting.

Report of the Committees: No reports New business: we have been advised that we must be out of the building on Saturday by 6pm. We will ask for volunteers to help in this task from the membership. Ray asked that all boxes be labeled with contents so we may keep an inventory.

Libby Parmer-Smith called the meeting to order at 7:00p CST.

Roll Call: Present: Libby Parmer-Smith, Ray Vaturro, Dominique Mercurio, Robin Rhoden, Roland Masse, Lori Webster, Debbie Walker, Flo Tumolo. Bonnie Turner will be late joining the meeting.

Report of the President: Libby thanked the board for their help with the National specialty events. She felt all went well.

Report of the Corresponding Secretary: Robin ad-vised that the club received a thank you note from Kari Olsen for allowing her to set up a booth at the National. Robin received new applications for membership from Landon Parks and Rod and Jayson Thorp. The applica-tions have been forwarded to Claudia for inclusion in the next newsletter.

Report of the Treasurer: The dues notices not picked up at the Annual meeting are being sent out.

Delegate Report: No report

Report of the Committees: Education: 40 people attended the seminar. The

speaker received a positive response. Judges education seminar: 5 potential elkhound

judges attended. All stayed for ringside mentoring both days. Karin Elvin, Ed Hall, and Butch Masse were involved in the mentoring.

Breed Mentor Panel: 20 people attended. Marie Pe-terson , Dee Queen, and Karin Elvin were our panel-ists.

Judges Education in Orlando, Fl December 11-14th. Rick Berger expressed interest. Ray asked if the board had any other suggestions of speakers. There is a concern as to whether there will be enough dogs for the seminar. AKC asks that there be at least 4 dogs..

Judges Education in Rhode Island – Ed Hall will pre-sent this seminar in July.

Junior Scholarship committee: All members have agreed to continue. Holly Lewis will join the commit-tee as a new member.

Education Committee: A motion was made by Ray to donate another $2,000 to Dr. Modiano’s research center from the NEAA research fund. The motion was seconded by Dominique. A vote was taken on this motion . The results: Lori- No; Ray-Yes; Robin-No; Dominique-Yes; Flo-No; Butch-Yes; Debbie-No; Bonnie-No. 5 no votes-3 yes votes. Flo made the suggestion that we re-visit this topic after dues have been paid. Debbie will add this to future agenda .

Old Business: The 2018 HIT Agility medallion offered by Barb and

Dick Budny was not found to be awarded at the event. Pat Viken and Ray Vaturro have tried to con-tact Barb Budny with no response. Pat Viken was able to get a photo of a previously awarded medal-lion in order to try and create one for this years win-ner. Ray will try again to reach Barb in an effort to see if the Budnys wish to continue funding this award. The board tabled their discussion of the pos-sibility of this becoming an NEAA award until we have a response from the Budnys. Pat Viken made a request that we list all agility winners in the National catalogs as well.

The question was raised by Ray as to who will han-dle the ordering of the banners for the 2018 winners. Libby will handle this. Ray offered to help.

Committee appointments: all committees are in order with the exception of Legislative, Pedigree database, LCAC, Marketing, and Human resources. A discussion was held on whether the Marketing, Breed Promotion and Social Media committees should be combined in to one committee. Debbie will contact Robin to discuss con-tacting Cheryl Martin to see if she would be willing to serve on a Human resource committee as this is her field of expertise. New Business: The Storage unit is up for renewal. Ray made a mo-

tion that we renew the unit . Bonnie seconded the motion. Vote was taken and passed unanimously. Flo asked that Ray forward the bill for payment.

Storage unit inventory- Ray advised that an invento-ry of all boxes in storage has been completed. All boxes are marked. Notes and pictures have been made. Robin advised that a list of all remaining tro-phies has been included in the trophy boxes. Robin will also send a list to Ray.

Herding Committee: Member Traci Smith joined the meeting to discuss the creation of a herding commit-tee. The members of this committee would be Traci Smith, Toni Welkes, Dominique Mercurio, Melanie Rodgers, and Debbie Lang. Melanie has volunteered to be the statistician for this committee. The commit-tee if approved, would like to offer a top herding award beginning with 2018. Flo will check on obtain-ing the statistics from AKC. The committee is still working on the criteria for this award. Flo made a

motion that we create the NEAA herding committee. Butch seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Herding Instinct testing will be offered at the 2019 Cavalcade of events. Demonstrations on this event will be offered during the performance days as well.

Barn Hunt: Dennis Bell contacted the board with fig-ures relating to the costing of being the prime host of the Barn Hunt in 2019. The figures obtained in rela-tion to this last barn hunt indicate that this would be a great money maker for NEAA. The board voted to have Dennis follow up with those in charge to get a contract in place for this event. We will wait on fur-ther details.

May 11 board minutes: Bonnie made a motion, se-conded by Butch, to accept the May 11, 2018 board meeting minutes as published. Motion passed unani-mously.

Goals for 2018: Libby asked that the board members offer their goal suggestions for the 2018 -2019 year. Suggestions included: setting up a working budget; more legislative efforts; increasing membership; in-creasing health fund donations with target amount; getting the new website and social media up and running; continuing business as usual; working more directly with local clubs and breed promotion; pro-moting the NEAA inbox for suggestions; resolve the annual National specialty issue

Libby will draft a proposal regarding holding an an-nual specialty.

Neaa National scheduling: On May 9,2018 the board received a letter regarding our National dates conflict with the NECPV specialty date. We will invite Nancy Tyler with NECPV to participate in our June 11 board meeting in order to hear her concerns and offer op-tions. Debbie will contact Nancy .

Our recap of the 2018 specialty was tabled until June 11th. Email your list of good and bad to Libby by June 4th .. Discussion of 4 available sites recog-nized by AKC as universal sites . These are Spring-field MA Big E; Brooksville FL; Purina and Eu-kanuba in Ohio.

Guest, Nancy Tyler representing NECPV joined the meeting in order to discuss the Cavalcade dates for 2019 and conflict with NECPV specialty date. The board received a letter from Nancy on May 9th expressing the clubs concerns regarding the conflict in date between NECPV’s 50th anniversary and the NEAA Cavalcade. The board invited Nancy to attend our meeting to dis-cuss the issues. The board offered NECPV the option of holding their show following the cavalcade at Purina. This option was declined as the membership wants their show to be held closer to home base. Nancy advised that the club is exploring alternate arrangements. The NEAA board brought up the possibility of holding NECPV’s specialty in 2020 at Purina. Nancy thanked the board for hearing the concerns of the club.

Approval of last meeting Minutes: The meeting minutes from May 10, 2018 were ap-

proved following a typographical error correction. The meeting minutes from the May 21, 2018 meeting

were approved as submitted.

Report of the President: Libby received an email regarding the Working rules

and operational policies. An email was sent to the sender asking for clarification of what is being asked of the board. Ray will check to see if any updates need to be made and forward them to Ken if applica-ble.

No volunteers have come forward to fill open com-mittee positions. It was decided to add a Help Want-ed paragraph to any upcoming email blasts.

A letter was received regarding the accounting sys-tem changes being considered. It was asked that the board solicit outside input on this change. Flo and Libby will draft a response to this .

Report of the Corresponding Secretary: We are unable to vote on membership applications

as 30 day time for comment has not passed. A letter was received from a rescue home asking for

financial help for an Elkhound in need of surgery. A response will be drafted advising that NEAA rescue funds cannot be used for this purpose.

Report of the Treasurer: Approval of forms submitted to Everbank has been

received. Flo will send Libby the documents needed

to complete fund transfer. Rob Garrett has been contacted regarding adding

Herding statistics report to those requested by NE-AA.

Preliminary budget narrative has been sent to all board members for discussion.

Delegate Report: Lori was absent from meeting as she was attending

the AKC delegates meeting.

Herding: Melanie Rodgers has asked if we will be able to offer awards for 2017 herding achievements. The board has asked that the committee submit a proposal for awards.

YEARBOOK: discussion was held on suggestions made for improvement of this process. Also it was mentioned that the YEARBOOK cover should always be the NEAA logo as it is a club publication.

Financial: Flo requested a continuance of the financial discussion until July 9th meeting as she wants to update some of the information sent to board members based on new information received at this meeting.

2019 Cavalcade update: Bill Totten joined the meeting at 820pm CT. Discussion was held on making the change to an

Annual national beginning in 2019. After discussion of the pros and cons including judges selection pro-cedures it was decided to leave 2019 as a Caval-cade.

Debbie made a motion , seconded by Bonnie, that the NEAA hold yearly National Specialties beginning in 2021.A vote was taken and recorded as follows-Ray-no; Robin-yes; Flo-yes; Debbie-yes; Bonnie-yes; Dominique-yes; Butch-yes; Lori-absent.

Bill advised contract rates for 2019 hotels. Wildwood room rates are $100-150 with a pet fee of $30 for 1-2dogs and $60 for 3-4 dogs. The Holiday Inn offered a rate of $119.95 with a dog fee of $35. Debbie made a motion, seconded by Bonnie, that we accept the contract at the Holiday Inn as our host hotel for 2019. Vote was taken. 7 yes votes, 1 absentee. Mo-tion passed.

Discussion on show secretaries was held. More dis-cussion to follow.

Judges will be finalized shortly. There are many committee positions open for 2019

Bill advised that he is looking at Herding instinct, Seminars, and Best of the Best being held on Wednesday of the event week.

The Holiday Inn is able to host our Banquet. We will look at possibility of setting up a shuttle from Purina to Holiday Inn if this option is accepted.

2018 Recap: Ray advised that the HIT medallion issue has been

rectified. A medallion has been sent to Connie Schulte.

Comments received from members that they prefer an online entry and credit card payment option

A designated coordinator needs to be on site all days.

The club should set up an area in the building for

visiting with others. More signage needed. We need to post schedule of events and updates in

a prominent spot. We need to order judges badges as well as badges

for committee and board members. National anthems and flags needed. Schedule trophy presenters for photos. Assure that all tables are covered for all events. Amend judges contracts to state that mileage reim-

bursement must not exceed the cost of a round trip ticket.

Original Project Descrip on: Canine epilepsy is a chronic neurological condi on, o en requiring lifelong medica on with an epilep c drugs (AEDs). Despite appropriate treatment with available AEDs, seizure freedom may not always be achievable. Indeed, over two thirds of dogs with epilepsy con nue to have seizures longterm and around 20-30% remain poorly controlled on standard AEDs. The hardest to treat dogs are termed 'refractory' or 'drug-resistant' pa ents. There is an urgent need to develop alterna ve treatments to improve the quality of life (QoL) of drug-resistant pa ents. The ketogenic diet, originally characterized as high in fat and low in carbohydrates, has been a successful treatment in children with epilepsy for several decades, decreasing seizure ac vity and even leading to seizure freedom in drugresistant pa ents. Recent research has iden fied that a component of the ketogenic diet, a mediumchain fa y acid (MCT) called C10 has direct an -seizure effects on the brain. The inves gators will assess whether dietary supplementa on with ACT oil containing C10 for dogs with drug-resistant epilepsy will reduce seizure frequency and/or severity. As epilepsy has mul ple impacts on QoL beyond seizure frequency, the researchers will also inves gate whether the MCT supplement alters the side effect profile of AEDs, improves behavioral problems associated with epilepsy (e.g. anxiety) and cogni on, and improves the stress levels of the affected dog. We have received full ethical approval, have recruited staff on the trial, have standardised and established all the addi onal cogni ve, behavioural, blood and gait tests in the lab and have currently good case recruitment numbers. As aforemen oned we had some delay in recruitment. We have now however finished the recruitment with the last pa ent finishing the trial in February 2018. We could show that by supplemen ng the diet with MCT oil seizure frequency can be reduced significantly. We are currently doing sub-analysis, which we will share shortly. All metabonomics sample are planned to be run and the first analysis should be ready un l the end of summer.

Original Project Descrip on: Diagnos c tests based on the detec on of DNA of infec ous organisms from clinical samples have revolu onized veterinary medicine in the last decades. Currently, diagnos c panels for several ckborne organisms are available through universi es and private laboratories in the USA and abroad. However, the vast majority of results from clinically ill dogs are nega ve for ck-borne diseases, which frustrates veterinarians and dog owners trying to reach a defini ve diagnosis and improve treatment op ons. These panels are based on the detec on of previously known DNA sequences of each pathogen, with li le room for detec ng new organisms. Consequently, the current assays may suffer from "myopia": a self-fulfilling effect that prevents the detec on of new or emerging organisms. Using an innova ve approach, the inves gators will employ next-genera on sequencing (NGS) to overcome the limita ons of current diagnos c technology. With NGS, the inves gators can generate millions of individual gene sequencing reads from each clinical sample, allowing for the iden fica on and characteriza on of mul ple organisms from a single sample. Tes ng samples from dogs naturally exposed to ck-borne diseases, NGS will detect not only new organisms but also characterize gene c differences among known organisms. Report to Grant Sponsor from Inves gator: Dogs from any breed, age or gender can be infected with microbes transmi ed by cks or fleas. These diseases can cause devasta ng effects and even death not only to dogs but also to humans. Ticks are present everywhere in the US, and they bring the risk of transmi ng the microbes to dogs and humans. It is s ll very difficult to diagnose these condi ons, and approximately 95% of suspected dog cases are nega ve when we use current diagnos c technology. One of the biggest limi ng factors for the development of be er diagnos c tools is the insufficient funding opportuni es for large-scale projects. The long-term goal of our research team is to expand the current diagnos c tools to include a larger spectrum of poten ally hazardous microorganisms. Our innova ve approach is based on four pillars: (1) large-scale DNA sequencing to iden fy known and poten ally new organisms present in blood of dogs naturally exposed to vector-borne diseases; (2) increase in sensi vity and specificity of large-scale sequencing by targe ng major families of poten ally hazardous organisms, (3) advanced bioinforma c analysis of millions of DNA sequences from a large number of dogs suspected of infec on; and (4) comprehensive quality-control measures in order to support and validate the impact of our results. We confirmed that large-scale DNA sequencing can simultaneously detect one or more microbes in dog blood and can iden fy which microbe is present based on its unique DNA sequence. We confirmed this in both simulated infec ons as well as in samples from naturally infected dogs. We also detected poten ally new organisms from sick dogs. With the crucial support from the AKC Canine Health Founda on, we were able to expand our exper se in using large-scale DNA sequencing technology for the detec on of ck-borne pathogens in dogs and generate a large body of knowledge to support the further development of this technology. Ul mately, the results of this study will support early diagnosis and be er medical care to dogs worldwide.

Original Project Descrip on: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic diseases of dogs and a top concern of dog breeders. Despite strong evidence that gene cs is important in determining the risk of idiopathic epilepsy, numerous gene mapping studies have failed to iden fy a locus that accounts for that risk in either dogs or humans. Seizures occur when excessive ac vity goes beyond the normal threshold for brain func on, many factors contribute to that level of ac vity, and therefore, muta ons in numerous genes may collec vely contribute to increased ac vity un l that threshold is exceeded, resul ng in epilepsy. Any one of these muta ons may be present in non-epilep c dogs, but because it only par ally alters ac vity, it would not produce seizures. Therefore, tradi onal gene mapping studies might overlook that muta on. Using a novel whole genome sequencing approach the inves gators hope to iden fy DNA varia ons in epilep c dogs that could affect the func on of genes such as ion channels and neurotransmi er receptors that have been shown to alter the seizure threshold in humans or rodents. The frequency of such varia ons in popula ons of epilep c and non-epilep c dogs will be directly compared rather than the indirect markers used in tradi onal mapping studies. Presenta ons: Searching for Gene c Risk Factors for Canine Epilepsy in Whole Genome Sequences. Presented by GS Johnson at the Na onal Parent Club Canine Health Conference in St Louis on 8/12/17. Report to Grant Sponsor from Inves gator: This study has two parts. Part 1 is to first use the DNA from epilep c purebred dogs to produce whole genome sequences and to iden fy poten al breed-specific gene c risk factors that increase the likelihood that a dog will develop epilepsy. We proposed to generate and analyze whole genome sequences from at least 18 epilep c dogs. So far whole genome sequences from 23 epilep c purebred dogs have been generated and analyzed. Samples from five addi onal epilep c dogs have very recently been sequenced at a sequencing center in St. Louis, Missouri and we expect to complete the ini al analysis of the sequence data from these five dogs in the next two or three weeks. The second step to part 1 is to select high-priority breed-specific gene c factors and use DNA tests to see if they occur more o en in epilep c dogs then in non-epilep c dogs of the same breed. We proposed to evaluate at least seven high-priority breed-specific gene c factors. So far we have completed the evalua on of six of them, but none have proven to be gene c risk factors for epilepsy. Preliminary results for a seventh gene c risk factor, this one in English Se ers, look promising; however, we will need to complete tes ng and sta s cal analysis to validate our findings. Work is just started on an eighth poten al breed-specific gene c factor. In addi on, we expect to evaluate addi onal risk factor candidates iden fied in the last five whole genome sequences. The second part of the study is to analyze our en re collec on of whole genome sequences from both epilep c and non-epilep c dogs to iden fy and gene c factors that increase the risk for developing epilepsy in mul ple breeds. Guidelines and Rules Introduction The purpose of the NEAA Futurity – “The Breeder's Cup” and Maturity competition (aka Futurity/Maturity) is to encourage breeders to continually strive for excellence and to reward them for their breeding efforts. Because of this, the competition is weighted in favor of the breeder of the litter. However, recognition is also given to the sire for his genetic contribution and to the owners of the individual entries for their work in the development process as the quality of the individual entry is reflected in these combined efforts. The purpose of holding both a Futurity and Maturity competition is to allow the observer the opportunity to study various individuals and lines from puppyhood through early adulthood and thus make better breeding choices in their own breeding programs.

Litter Nomination Litter nominations are to be made by NEAA members in good standing. Only puppies from breeder-nominated litters, and nominated as individuals, may compete in the NEAA Futurity – “The Breeder's Cup” and Maturity. If there are multiple breeders, at least one of the breeders must be an NEAA member in good standing. The stud/semen owner(s) at the time of mating/insemination shall be the stated Owner(s) of the Sire/Semen on the litter nomination application and on each event entry form for the duration of the litter nomination.

Non-members may submit an application for NEAA membership attached to the nomination form for the litter or the individual nomination form for the puppy. If the NEAA Board accepts the membership application, the nomination will be valid as of the date the nomination was received. If the membership application is not accepted, the nomination of the litter or the individual puppy will be invalid and the nomination fee will be refunded.

The litter nomination shall be submitted on the form available from the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator or from www.neaa.net with all fields completed. A pedigree form, available from the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator or from www.neaa.net, shall be submitted along with the litter nomination form. It is understood the litter is being nominated for the next Futurity/Maturity Stakes for which the offspring qualify by age.

A litter nomination and payment postmarked* more than thirty (30) days after the whelping date will not be accepted. Litter nomination fees are as follows:

$30.00 – nomination and payment postmarked* prior to whelping date $70.00 – nomination and payment postmarked* up to thirty (30) days thereafter (whelping date counted

as day one)

*NOTE: Litter nomination and pedigree forms shall be PDF forms and available to be filled out and submitted online within designated deadlines, if desired, or the traditional copy and mail option remains.

The Futurity/Maturity Coordinator will send an acknowledgement of the litter nomination application along with the assigned identification number within thirty (30) days of receipt. A litter nomination shall be considered null and void if …

no living puppy is whelped. no individual puppy nomination is on record once the litter is five (5) months old. all individually nominated puppies are no longer eligible having been entered in one (1) Futurity

and one (1) Maturity.

Futurity/Maturity Stake Any member who, having nominated a litter or individual puppy, fails to remain a member in good standing with the NEAA, by lapsing of dues, suspension, or expulsion, and has not been reinstated thirty (30) days prior to a Futurity/Maturity event, shall lose all rights in the Futurity/Maturity Stake and nomination fees will not be refundable. If the owner(s) of the sire/semen used in the breeding is not an NEAA member in good standing, the individual(s) shall lose all rights in the Futurity/Maturity Stake. An individual dog nominated by a lapsed, suspended, or expelled member, but co-owned or transferred to the ownership of another NEAA member before said lapse, suspension, or expulsion, is eligible to compete in a Futurity/Maturity event. In each such instance, monetary awards at the Futurity/Maturity event will be presented only to the breeder(s), owner(s) of the dog, and owner(s) of the sire/semen in good membership standing with the NEAA.

Individual Puppy Nomination Puppies from breeder-nominated litters must be nominated as individuals in order to compete in the NEAA Futurity – “The Breeder's Cup” and Maturity. Individual puppy nominations are to be made by NEAA members in good standing. If there are multiple owners, at least one of the owners must be an NEAA member in good standing.

The individual puppy nomination shall be submitted on the form available from the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator or from www.neaa.net with all fields completed. The nomination form should include the AKC registration number of the puppy. If the AKC registration number is pending, then this should be noted on the individual nomination form, and the puppy owner should forward the number to the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator no later than forty-five (45) days from the original puppy nomination submission. Change in ownership of the puppy should also be forwarded to the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator. An individual puppy nomination and payment of the appropriate fee must bear a postmark* date consistent with the puppy’s specified age group. An individual nomination and payment postmarked* after the puppy reaches five (5) months of age will not be accepted.

Individual nomination fees are as follows: $20.00 – puppy under three (3) months of age $40.00 – puppy three (3) months of age and under four (4) months of age $60.00 – puppy four (4) months of age and under five (5) months of age

The Futurity/Maturity Coordinator shall send an acknowledgement of the individual nomination within thirty (30) days of receipt of the application. All correspondence will be sent to the nominating owner unless a change is requested by the nominating owner (i.e. puppy ownership changes).

An individual puppy nomination shall be considered null and void if … puppy is no longer living. puppy is no longer eligible having reached 39 months of age or older. puppy is no longer eligible having been entered in one (1) Futurity and one (1) Maturity.

Eligibility Period Once an individual puppy has been nominated, the eligible puppy shall be allowed to compete in one (1) Futurity and one (1) Maturity during its lifetime. Upon the determination of a Futurity/Maturity event date, individual dog eligibility for that event begins on April 1st three (3) years prior to the event year and ends six (6) months prior to the event date. An eligible puppy must be at least six (6) months of age and under 15 months of age on the event date without a prior entry in a Futurity class. An eligible dog must be at least 15 months of age and under 39 months of age on the event date without a prior entry in a Maturity class.

Class Divisions The class divisions are as follows:

Two (2) special NEAA traveling trophies will also be given: “The Breeder's Cup” to the Breeder(s) of Best in Futurity “Best in Maturity” to the Breeder(s) of Best in Maturity

The trophies are awarded to the breeders of the winners of Best in Futurity and Best in Maturity and are given in addition to the monetary awards. Engraving of each trophy nameplate is the responsibility of the winning breeder as are the expenses for returning the trophies to the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator at any time before six (6) weeks prior to the next Futurity/Maturity unless the current trophy holders will be in attendance at the next Futurity/Maturity. If the trophies are shipped, each should be insured for $500 and include tracking of the shipment.

Monetary Awards The money from nominations and entries makes up the Futurity/Maturity Stake and shall be distributed as follows:

Futurity/Maturity General Expense Fund 25% (for expenses) Best in Futurity 15% (divided 50% to breeder, 30% to puppy owner, 20% to sire/semen owner) Best in Maturity 15% (divided 50% to breeder, 30% to puppy owner, 20% to sire/semen owner) Class Placements 45%

The 45% allocated to Class Placements is distributed according to the number of entries in each class: Percent allocated to class = (number in class) / (total entry)

From the Individual Class Stake, the division by placement is as follows: 1st = 40% (divided 60% to breeder, 40% to owner) 2nd = 30% (divided 60% to breeder, 40% to owner) 3rd = 20% (divided 60% to breeder, 40% to owner) 4th = 10% (divided 60% to breeder, 40% to owner)

All monetary awards will be rounded to the nearest whole dollar amount. Monetary awards for class wins and placements, Best in Futurity and Best in Maturity will be awarded in the ring to the individual handling the dog. Monetary awards to the Breeder of Best in Futurity, Breeder of Best in Maturity, the owner(s) of the sire/semen of Best in Futurity and the owner(s) of the sire/semen of Best in Maturity are to be claimed by the individual(s) named on the litter nomination application from the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator.

Monetary prizes not awarded will be put into the category of Futurity/Maturity General Expense Fund. Allocated expenses (e.g. ribbon expense, judge expense, etc.) will be funded from the Futurity/Maturity General Expense Fund. At the conclusion of each Futurity/Maturity event, any remaining balance in the Futurity/Maturity General Expense Fund will be put into the NEAA General Operating Fund.

Judge Nomination At least nine (9) months prior to the closing date of the Futurity/Maturity event, the Futurity/Maturity

Coordinator shall place a notice in the NE News to notify each nominator of the judge nomination deadline. Within the same notice, the Coordinator shall provide a Judge Nomination Form and a standardized Judge Nominee Biographical Questionnaire. These forms shall be available from the Coordinator or from www.neaa.net.

Regardless of the number of litters he/she nominated, each nominator shall be given an opportunity to nominate one (1) individual to judge the Futurity/Maturity.

At least six (6) months prior to the closing date of the Futurity/Maturity event, the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator, for each nominated litter, shall send a Validation Letter to the nominator to confirm the information on record. Every effort should be made to allow a minimum of fourteen (14) days from the date the Validation Letter is sent for the return of any necessary corrections.

The judge nomination deadline shall be approximately six (6) months prior to the date of the Futurity/Maturity event. A Judge Nomination Form and a Judge Nominee Biographical Questionnaire, which shall include a photograph of the nominee, must be received by the specified deadline set by the Coordinator, after which time any Questionnaire or nomination received shall not be accepted.

Only the one (1) breeder identified as the nominator on the litter nomination form shall receive correspondence related to judge nomination.

An electronic mail address noted on the litter nomination form shall serve as authorization for a nominator to receive correspondence sent by electronic mail from the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator.

Judge Nominee It shall be the responsibility of each nominator that submits a Judge Nomination Form to initiate the

submission of a standardized Judge Nominee Biographical Questionnaire and a photograph from the individual nominated.

The Questionnaire shall have a check box for those judge nominees interested in judging as well as for those judge nominees declining the judging opportunity. Failure of a judge nominee to complete and submit a Questionnaire shall be considered a decline of the judging opportunity.

The Futurity/Maturity Coordinator shall send a Nominee Letter to each individual nominated specifying judge nominee rules and policies.

Individuals being considered for nomination as the Futurity/Maturity judge do not have to be a licensed Norwegian Elkhound judge but must be in good standing with the NEAA and the American Kennel Club (AKC), or (if applicable) the kennel club of their country of origin.

Any individual elected to judge the Futurity/Maturity who has a litter nominated for that Futurity/Maturity shall forfeit that nomination; any puppies individually nominated for that Futurity/Maturity, which are owned by others, shall forfeit their nominations as well.

Any individual who judges an NEAA conformation event, including judges of sweepstakes or futurities held with licensed or member shows, shall do so in accordance with the policies and rules as defined by the AKC in Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges and Rules Applying to Dog Shows ("Chapter 11, Section 13 – Dog Show Entries, Conditions of Dogs Affecting Eligibility"). In accordance with American Kennel Club rules, any person judging sweepstakes or futurities at a multi-day specialty show will not be allowed to show in conformation for the duration of the show, but will be allowed to show in performance on the days they are not judging. They may, however, show the day before a multi-day specialty show begins and the day after a multi-day specialty show ends.

Voting Ballot The Futurity/Maturity Coordinator shall send to a nominator a voting ballot for each litter he/she has

nominated (e.g. three (3) nominated litters, three (3) voting ballots). The ballot, inclusive of all judge nominees interested in judging the Futurity/Maturity, shall include a short biography on each judge nominee. Chapter 11, Section 13 of the AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows shall be included on the ballot.

The voting method for the election of the Futurity/Maturity judge shall be based on the principle of preferential voting allowing a nominator to rank the judge nominees in order of preference. A nominator, before returning their voting ballot, may list up to four (4) judge nominees in order of preference.

A nominator shall return their voting ballot in the provided ballot envelope by a specified deadline set by the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator, allowing a minimum of fourteen (14) days from the time the ballot is sent. The voting ballot must be returned by first class mail in the provided ballot envelope and postmarked prior to the specified deadline; no electronic mail or fax ballots shall be accepted. Any ballot postmarked on or after the specified deadline shall not be accepted.

Based on ballot results, judge nominees voted first through fourth choice shall be contacted in order of most votes received until a judge nominee agrees to judge. The judge nominee receiving the most first choice votes shall be acknowledged the majority winner, contacted first and if willing, declared the Futurity/Maturity judge.

If there is a draw, of those judge nominees tied for first choice, the nominee receiving the most votes for second choice shall be acknowledged the majority winner, contacted first and if willing, declared the Futurity/Maturity judge.

Should circumstances prevent the declared judge from performing the Futurity/Maturity judging assignment, the judge nominee declared second choice shall be contacted first with the option to accept the judging assignment, and so on through fourth choice if need be.

Event Secretary, Show Secretary, Superintendent The American Kennel Club must receive the Futurity/Maturity event application and specialty club judging

panel at least eighteen (18) weeks prior to the closing date of the Futurity/Maturity event (Chapter 2, Sections 4 and 9, and Chapter 4, Section 1 of the AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows).

The show secretary/superintendent or if applicable, the Futurity/Maturity Coordinator, shall provide a premium list and judging program to the Futurity/Maturity judge and to each entrant. Entrant’s confirmation of entry and judging program shall be sent to insure receipt no later than seven (7) days before the event date.

Once entries close, the show secretary/superintendent shall provide the Treasurer with a breakdown of entry fees and class divisions. The Futurity/Maturity Coordinator or if applicable, the Treasurer, shall determine the exact amount of the monetary awards, prepare payout envelopes, and deliver the sealed envelopes to the Futurity/Maturity ring steward prior to event judging.

Report of the President: Libby reported that AKC has approved our proposed constitutional amendment pending the receipt of a letter from a lawyer stating that we are in compliance with LLC requirements. Butch offered to contact the lawyer used by his all breed club to see if he will draft this letter for us.

Report of the Corresponding Secretary: Robin advised that we have 3 applicants to vote on. Landon Park- vote unanimous; Jon Compton-vote unanimous; Rod and Jason Thorp-vote unanimous.

Report of the Treasurer: The treasurer advised that the CD accounts have been finalized. The club received $320.96 in funds from the Purina circle program. Monies from credit card charges for the 2018 events are coming in. The $1,000 credit card charge for the Purina events center deposit has not shown up. Flo will contact Purina to find out what is happening.

Delegate Report: Lori attended the AKC educational summit held in NJ. She advised that the summit was full of information. Lori will be submitting a report on the conference for the NE news. Lori advised that AKC is offering more help than ever for clubs through the club development and club communications departments. AKC has determined that their key demographic right now is the millenials. As such we should be considering making more use of social media platforms. Lori also mentioned that AKC is looking at changing the point system allowing the BOW in a 1 class dog, 1 class bitch situation to win 1 point.

Report of the Committees: 2019 events: tabled until 13 August

Peck award: Kathleen Hamilton and Betsy Vaturo have declined serving on the committee. The committee now consists of Carol Slattery, and Robin Rhoden. One more member is needed. An inventory of statues needs to be taken. Ed Hall has the mold if new statues need to be forged.

Education: Ed Hall will present a judges education seminar on the Elkhound in conjunction with the

Providence Kennel Club.

Old Business: Libby made contact with the member concerned

about the change to our financial reporting system. After her discussion Libby suggested that we try to put together a review group of former treasurers and members from the financial field to give their input on whether we should proceed with the changes suggested. Libby will reach out to Ron Peters to see if he would be willing to chair this group.

Flo presented 2018-2019 budget proposal #2 for the boards review. After discussion on ways to reduce costs and increase income it was decided to table the discussion until next month to give the board time to ponder and come up with suggestions.

New Business: The NEAA CH & R committee has recommended

that the NEAA support the following studies with funds from our Donor Advised fund. The suggested amount is $2500 per study which qualifies our donations for matching funds from AKC.

The studies are as follows; 1. Harmonization of genetic testing for dogs 2. Efficacy of Cannabidiol for treatment of Canine

epilepsy 3. Evaluation of a new vaccine for Canine

Brucellosis. Bonnie made a motion to support the 3 studies recommended by the CH & R committee in the amount of $2500 per study from the Donor advised fund. Debbie seconded the motion. Vote taken – motion passed unanimously.

Debbie will send an email blast to the membership requesting nominations for the AKC ACE awards.

The NAIA (National Animal Interest Alliance) conference will be held in Orlando October 26-28, 2018. Cost is $175 for conference. Libby will contact our Legislative chair to see if he is interested in attending. The board approved subsidy of $300 plus cost of conference. If the chair is not interested Bonnie will attend on the clubs behalf.

The board approved running an ad in the NE News each issue regarding the 2019 events week.

The Norwegian Elkhound Standard has been in existence for Many Years. Every breed has a standard—a docu-ment that is like a blueprint that details what that par cular breed should look like—what is acceptable and what is not. The standard is applied as a guide to structure, color, height, weight, eye and coat color, ear-set and move-ment. It covers all aspects of a breed and guides in the selec on of suitable breeding stock for future genera ons.

The Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of America has recently developed an illustrated guide containing visual aids that assist in clarifying for the reader what an elkhound should be.
