Registrations and donations are now open on the Dry July website: www.dryjuly.comLast year, more than 2100 people signed-up for Dry July’s New Zealand pilot and raised in excess of $550,000 for the Northern Regional Cancer and Blood Service at Auckland City Hospital – the main treatment centre for cancer patients from all over the upper North Island. Project Promise has been selected to bene�t from this year’s fundraising. Funds raised will be spent on projects improving the cancer treatment journey and making a di�cult time a little brighter for cancer patients. Support for the project continues to �ow in... While we had hoped to have completed our fundraising by now, tough economic times have been a challenge. That said, we are constantly humbled by the generosity and spirit of Northlanders who are so committed to making this centre a reality.

The support from people of all ages and stages and every corner of the community continues to be overwhelming.

We are currently sitting just over $2 million in raised funds. We’ve come a long way in the last year and you will have seen those barometers rising! We are still striving to reach our target of $3 million.

As well as working hard to raise the money needed for the build, we have also been busy in the background. As you can imagine, a project of this size is not a small undertaking.

The site at Hospital Road has been secured, the centre plans have been �nalised, with building and resource consent well underway.

The goal is to break ground as soon as possible as the centre is desperately needed. Due to fundraising not happening as quickly as we had hoped, we have been working with Northland District Health Board on ways to make the build happen while we keep on with raising the necessary funds.

More than ever that we need community events and fundraisers to keep happening. To all of you raising funds, running events, organising fundraisers and supporting the project – we couldn’t do it without you and we whole heartedly THANK YOU!

Speaking of community events... the BNZ community brick wall has now over 290 bricks sold! Bricks have been bought by individuals, groups, businesses, fundraisers, schools, friends, colleagues... This wall really does represent our community.

There are lots of ways to raise the funds to get your name on the wall, so get creative! The bricks will feature in the reception area of the new centre. Every donation of $1000 is eligible.

Across Northland, fundraising events for Project Promise happen pretty well every week. However, two recent events had more in common than just their geographic location. Both these Far North fundraisers were run by those who know what life is like inside Northland’s current oncology unit.

Russell fundraiser takes the cakeIf there’s one thing that’s sure to garner the support of a town, it’s cake! And Russell, in the Bay of Islands, showed how powerful cake can be with a fundraiser for Project Promise held in March. Russell’s Co�ee Cancer Cake Group members know more than most how valuable a cancer treatment centre would be in Northland. The group started in November last year, to provide support for cancer patients, survivors and carers. Organiser Shan Calcott said: “We share support, chat, laughter and sometimes a few tears. But there is always cake!”

Seventeen people attended the group’s �rst meeting. It is the only one of its kind in Northland. The group decided they wanted to raise some money for the planned new cancer centre. “We decided to do a fun, family fundraiser for Project Promise and the whole of Russell got on board”. The day was held on Easter Sunday at the Village Green and was a roaring success with $9,700 raised!

On Easter Sunday, locals packed the village green. There was a roaring trade in mussel fritters, bench press and rowing competitions, face and nail painting, and competitions such as “guess the number of lollies in the jar”. And of course there was cake – the cake stand alone raised more than $1,300. An ambulance was on hand o�ering blood pressure checks and children were shown through the �re engine. “It was an awesome day from the little town with a big heart,” Calcott said.

Whangaroa Golf TournamentIn 2011 Kaeo resident Heather McGregor went through life changing treatment for breast cancer. As she received her treatment, Heather saw �rst hand what an amazing job the team in the Whangarei Hospital Oncology unit do, despite the restricted working conditions they have. So Heather decided she wanted to help change this situation. For the next few months she thought about how she could raise funds for Project Promise and in September 2012 hit upon the idea of organising a golf tournament.

She approached her local golf club, Whangaroa Golf Club, with her idea and they were more than happy to assist. With the help of one of the clubs key players Sam Dangen, whose father had also gone through cancer treatment, they came up with the idea of an ‘Ambrose’ golf event. With her idea set, Heather pounded the pavement, door knocked and sent emails out to businesses, the community at large and those that she knew. The Far North community got behind the event and a number of terri�c prizes were donated. Archibald Motors even going so far as donating a car for anyone who hit a hole in one! (the car wasn’t won on the day, but the club cat had a great time quality controlling the seats for comfort). The response to the day was overwhelming and over $7,500 was raised and donations are still coming in! It was such a success Heather is now planning on running the golf tournament fundraiser again in 2014!

Bequest To Help Turner Centre In KerikeriA very grateful Turner Centre is one of the several local organisations to receive a helping hand thanks to a recent bequest.

The $200,000 bequest came from long time supporters of the centre, John and Ann Dalton. The funds will be held by the Northland Community Foundation on behalf of the Turner Centre and annual income payments will be used to support and maintain the auditorium in accordance with the Dalton’s wishes.

Northland Community Foundation is a way to connect people who care with causes that matter to them. One of our key roles is to secure bequests and donations to manage long-term (in perpetuity) on behalf of the community or speci�c organisation in keeping with the wishes of the donor. NCF are the bequest vehicle for the Turner Centre and Turner Centre Finance Director, Leah Watson, said “Not only is this bequest great for the centre, but it also marks the o�cial start of our partnership with the Northland Community Foundation. It’s the �rst of what we hope will be many such donations.”

Tribute to Susie Fordyce, TrusteeSadly, NCF board member Susie Fordyce passed away on March 14, 2013.

She will be missed tremendously. During her time on the board Susie truly put her heart into Northland’s Community Foundation and will be remembered as a hardworking, caring champion of the community.

She was known to be a key driving force in the Community Foundation and encouraged charitable giving to bene�t the community. She was a tireless worker. Susie and her late husband Stuart were both passionate supporters of Project Promise and had been involved from its concept. Both Susie and Stuart’s hard-work and dedication will live on as their greatly appreciated legacy to Northland.
