A message from Chairman Trevor Jones and Chief Executive Will Hancock.
We achieved a significant amount during 2013 and together with meeting our performance targets, we led the way on the development of some new health apps (Trauma bypass app and AED locator app).
2013 brought many challenges for us all and it has been heartening to see teams really pulling together to find new solutions to the issues that we are faced with.
LOOKING BACK AT A BUSY AND CHALLENGING YEAR
Now that we are providing the NHS 111 service to the residents of the SCAS area, delivering NHS 111 national resilience to the rest of the country and the 999, Patient Transport and Commercial services locally, the service is busier than ever.
The New Year as always will bring new opportunities and we are confident that SCAS will continue to make innovative strides forward, taking increasingly skilled clinicians on to the frontline and providing more enhanced levels of care in the community and in people’s homes than ever before.
In memoriamWe would like to take this opportunity to remember the tragic loss of some of our staff members in 2013.

DAVID CAMERON, PRIME MINISTER AND MP FOR WEST OXFORDSHIRE, VISITED SCAS EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRE THIS MONTHSouth Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) was privileged to host a visit from the MP for West Oxfordshire and Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday 10 January. Mr Cameron visited Will Hancock, Chief Executive at our Bicester headquarters, to find out more about our plans to integrate the NHS 111 and 999 services, to enable us to provide a seamless service to our patients. Mr Cameron also spent time meeting staff in our busy Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). He was able to observe and appreciate the pressures on our staff as they responded to ‘999’ emergency calls and those received via NHS ‘111’.
He also experienced at first hand which of our diverse range of resources were dispatched to those emergencies and learnt about the different care pathways that SCAS accesses, depending on the patient’s individual need. He also had the opportunity to talk to call handlers and clinicians in our NHS111 service, learning more about the process for guiding members of the public to the correct course of action for their urgent health need.
Our staff explained that SCAS is still developing the directory of services, working closely with our partners, to ensure patients get assessment, advice and access to the most appropriate care.
13
Speaking after his visit Mr Cameron said “Clearly the time it takes to respond to a life threatening event is critical and it was helpful to see how this is done in practice and to also hear about changes that are being made to improve the service upon which people rely. The flooding provides an extremely difficult situation for those affected and I was impressed by what I heard in terms of the work that SCAS have done during this time.” Chief Executive, Will Hancock said “We were really privileged to have Mr Cameron visit our service and were very proud to show him the highly regarded service that we provide.
In addition, we have had the opportunity to tell him about our successes as well as inform him about the challenges that a modern ambulance service faces on a daily basis and the innovations that we are introducing to find new solutions to these. His visit was timely, given the extra pressures on us due to flooding, particularly in the Oxfordshire area and we worked very closely with our many partner agencies to respond to the additional pressure.

Public: Oxfordshire Constituency – 2 vacancies » Michael Shread » Tim Windsor- Shaw (re-elected)
17
The Trust currently has over 13,000 public members and their support is vital and highly valued. Trust Chairman, Trevor Jones, said:
“These have been the first public governor elections since the initial elections when the Council of Governors was first formed in the run-up to SCAS achieving Foundation Trust status. The Council of Governors has developed considerably over the last eighteen months and, therefore, I am delighted that Melanie Hampton, David Ridley, Allan Read and Tim Windsor-Shaw (unopposed) have all been re-elected.
“Given their major contribution, it is with much sadness that we will be losing Al Tottle and Richard Ryan in Hampshire, and Gary Clark in Berkshire, when their terms of office expire on 1 March 2014, but I know that they will continue to offer SCAS great support in their role as members.
“As a result of the elections, I am delighted to welcome six new governors in the shape of Ian Hammond, Dave Johnson, Michael Shread (unopposed), Jeni Bremner, Tricia Kelly and Jonathan Cotterell. They join us at a very exciting time for SCAS and I look forward to working with them over the next three years”.
The official election process was conducted on behalf of the Trust by the Electoral Reform Services.

Melanie Hampton, lead governor of our Council of Governors gives here an overview of the membership and engagement activities overtaken in the last year. Following our successful membership drive the Governor group are now concentrating on feedback from members. Colleagues attended a number of community events throughout the year, such as Tim Windsor-Shaw at the Newbury Cultural Festival who really enjoyed meeting constituents. Al Tottle took along his friendly skeleton ‘bones’ to an event in Southampton and had great fun getting the children involved while David Ridley and Bob Duggan gave presentations to local parish councils. The sun shone on the Reading Pride and it was a real pleasure for me to meet so many people and to catch up with our marvellous and dedicated crews.
(pictured above, left, Nic Morecroft, Divisional Responder Manager (Hampshire) and Melanie Hampton, lead governor and Berkshire governor). John Sparrow from the Hampshire Air Ambulance and I went to the Burgclere Community group. We had a lively audience of 35 who put us through our paces. They were quite rightly indignant about the waste of resources of some 999 calls and sent us back to SCAS with some robust suggestions such as fining those who misuse the service. If any of you have a group that you would like us to address please contact us on. [email protected].
We have just had Governor Elections so welcome to our new governors and thanks to Al Tottle and Richard Ryan for all their hard work as retiring governors.
We look forward to 2014 being another exciting year for the trust, dealing with the challenges and reaching out and engaging with more of the community that we serve.

Our partner governors We have six governors appointed by partner organisations we work closely with. Three of our partner governors have recently joined the trust. They are: Allan Glass (New Forest District Council), David Chilvers (Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group) and Sabrina Chetcuti (NHS South Reading Clinical Commissioning Group). In this issue Allan Glass tells us more about his role. Also find out more about Councillor Keith House, one of our existing governors.
“I am a well qualified professional engineer and I have worked in many types of engineering from weaponry to boats and beyond. I am also a member of the Chartered Institute of Management and Institute of Quality Assurance.
Unfortunately I had to retire at the age of 60 when I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and rushed into hospital where I was treated for the next three years.
KEITH HOUSE, EASTLEIGH BOROUGH COUNCIL
“As a partner governor I come to the Trust looking at issues from a local government perspective in Hampshire, but also as a resident thinking about the needs of four generations of my family in the community from my father in his 80s to my five year old granddaughter.
In my day job I have been Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council since 1994 and am the Lib Dem Leader on Hampshire County Council.
When I get spare time I like going to rock and folk gigs and travelling around parts of Africa where by lack of phone signal I can escape from email.”
While in Hospital I underwent several rounds of chemotherapy as the first session was not strong enough but luckily the one we nicknamed DOMESTOS because it killed all known germs worked and I am here to prove it.
During one of my treatments I was approached by a Cancer charity and we raised £380,000 for a camera. I then became a patient representative for my ward and my factory layout knowledge was used when I took part in the design of the New Wing C6 at Southampton General Hospital and I was part of the Red & White appeal by the hospital charity.
I am now over five years post transplant and most of my bits still work so I stood for election as a District Councillor for New Forest District and was elected, I have been a Councillor for Fawley Parish for well over twenty years. As District Councillor I was voted to be the council’s representative as a governor of SCAS.”

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP SATISFACTION AND PATIENT CARE SURVEYThe first annual membership survey was undertaken in June last year and the results were published in the summer issue of Foundation Times.
10% responded to postal survey and 1.2% to online survey and we hope to increase these figures this year.
CONSTITUENCY MEETINGS Last June we embarked on a programme of constituency meetings across the four counties we serve thus ensuring that the views of patients, members and the public at large are heard. Events were held in Hampshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire and we will soon hold two more in Oxfordshire.
SPEAK UP IF YOU’RE AGED 14-16 CAMPAIGNThe trust wanted to hear more views and opinions from young people aged 14-16 about their local ambulance service and launched a press campaign throughout our four counties.
We are still interested in involving young people and so if you’re aged 14-16, or you have a child, nephew, niece, grandchild who is, why not suggest they become a member of their local ambulance Trust.
It doesn’t cost anything, gives you an opportunity to have a say about how ambulance services are developed in the future and is a great addition to your CV when applying for a job, college or university place.
PATIENT FORUMSWe launched our first patient forum at our Bucks constituency meeting last September. Hants patient forum was held last December and we are planning to hold Berks and Oxon ones in spring and summer this year.
If you would like to join one of our Patient forums please contact the Membership Office on 01869 365125 or email [email protected]
111 RoadshowsAs part of our winter pressure campaign, we worked with our 111 education department and CCGs in promoting NHS 111. A series of 111 roadshows were scheduled from autumn onwards and will conclude at the end of March this year.
Check where your nearest 111 roadshow will be held by clicking here.
SCAS launched the following membership and engagement initiatives in 2013:

We know they do this in difficult circumstances as they face cuts and reforms and a population with greater health needs, but I was pleased to see how they work together as a team to meet these challenges.”
Here are also comments from some of our members and governors:
Ù “The event was both interesting and informative. The speakers were excellent.”
Ù “I learned a lot from the event. The presentations were very good”.
Ù “I thought it was a very good presentation and covered all I thought it should.”
Ù “Very enlightening.”
Ù “I found it most interesting.”
Ù “A very interesting talk.”
Last November SCAS embarked on a programme of exclusive members-only events, in collaboration with other trusts, aimed at showing how NHS trusts work together.
The first event (Emergency Care Specialist evening- Behind the scenes of health emergencies) was held to great success at Southampton General with Solent Trust and the hospital trust.
Here is what journalist and Itchen councillor Rowenna Davis (pictured below with 111 Educator Stuart Turner) had to say about the event:
“Once again I was bowled over by the great job emergency health workers do for our city. From the ambulance crew to the specialist consultants in our trauma unit, people are working hard to give the best service to Southampton patients.
Joint events with other trusts

The trust also attends whenever possible educational events for private organisations and here is what Geoff Long from Southern Electric - Oxfordshire, had to say about the Driving at Work event, held last November at their Kidlington premises.
[Photo below of Erica Cowley, Technician at Kidlington station, with Geoff Long and representatives from the police and the fire services]
“I would like to take the opportunity to say a massive thank you to Erica Cowley and the presenters from the Police and Fire services who produced excellent presentations that were thought provoking, informative and a reminder to us all about the dangers we face on the roads.
The big impact was the talking about the organs.
The Powerpoint presentation came across very well, interacted with the staff giving us food for thought, good information on reducing tiredness and speed etc.”
– Geoff Long, Southern Electric

Events at private companies
The trust also attended its second health oriented campaign in Berkshire, facilitated by Mayoor Deep Dutta, one of our public members. Here is Mayoor’s feedback. “Just wish to thank you and the team ever so much for all the support provided to us during the Health Orientated Campaign held at our premises.
Both Jack and Kevin who were there from SCAS were very helpful and supportive to the event, patient and very accommodating to the needs of the employees. All who attended had good things to say and we certainly look forward to conducting this in the new year. Thanks again for all your help and support.” - Mayoor Deep Dutta, Senior Manager – Operations Support – Europe, Wipro Technologies

999TED
In autumn 2013 SCAS helped primary schools across our four counties educate children about using the emergency telephone number, 999, with the help of the SCAS mascot bear.
Every primary school in the region was contacted via email with a list of 10 things which we would like kids to know about calling 999 along with a quiz to test children’s knowledge.
To make this an even more fun and exciting activity for children, we also asked them to come up with a name for our mascot bear, along with a colourful, bright picture.
We received 47 entries from primary schools across our four counties and we are now pleased to present our SCAS mascot.
His name is 999 Ted and here is what he looks like. The winning drawing has been redrawn by SCAS designer Ben Hennessy.
Our mascot will be now be used in all our publications whenever suitable.

HEALTHCORNERFive ways to stay healthy this winter. It may be cold outside but winter needn’t be the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family.
30
31
Here are five ways to make sure that even when your body is telling you to hibernate you can keep healthy and fit, no matter what the weather’s like:
1. ELIMINATE YOUR SLEEP DEBTIn winter, we naturally sleep more, due to the longer nights. Use the time to catch up if you usually sleep six-and-a-half hours a night, much less than the seven to nine hours recommended.
2. DRINK MORE MILKYou are 80% more likely to get a cold in winter so making sure your immune system is in tip-top condition is important. Milk and dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais are great sources of protein and vitamins A and B12.
3. EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES When it’s cold and dark outside it can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food, but it’s important to ensure that you still keep your diet healthy and include five portions of fruit and veg a day.
4. TRY NEW ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILYDon’t use the cold winter months as an excuse to stay in and lounge around. Instead, get out with the whole family to try out a new activity, maybe ice-skating or taking a bracing winter walk on the beach. Regular exercise helps to control your weight and boost your immune.
5. HAVE A HEARTY BREAKFASTEating a warm bowlful of porridge on a cold morning isn’t just a delicious way to start your day, it also helps you to boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre, which give you energy and help you to feel fuller for longer, stopping the temptation to snack mid-morning.
