Career Paths

When you think of the horseracing industry, what thoughts enter your mind? Perhaps you think about jockeys, trainers and the staff in the racing yards. You might think about the stud hands and grooms and the stallion handlers. Have you thought about all the other more obscure positions, which make horseracing the tenth largest employer in the UK.

When raceday comes, millions of people across the world are watching the spectacle. Horseracing is an international sport and is the second largest spectator sport in the UK. For the 100,000 people who work in the British horseracing industry, it’s the culmination of years of preparation. From bookmakers to journalists, chefs to jockeys, racecourse managers to trainers, the roles and the career opportunities are endless.

Ex-learners: where are they now? David Allan: professional flat jockey, Dominic Elsworth: Cheltenham Festival winning jockey: Hayley Turner: Britain’s most successful female jockey: Callum Rodriguez, Connor Beasley, Jacob Butterfield, Luke Leadbitter and Lewis Edmunds are just a few of our jockeys doing

exceptionally well. Jonathan Bryan: bloodstock agent, Jessica Lamb: Racing Post journalist, Samantha Whitehead: racing secretary to Ralph Beckett, David Trow: Emirates stalls handler. These are just a handful of our ex learners who are enjoying successful careers in the racing industry.

Residential Foundation Course Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care

The Northern Racing College offers a variety of specialist training courses, all of which are designed to meet the needs of the racing industry. For those people seeking their first taste of racing, our Foundation Course which is offered as a riding or non riding course will ensure they have the necessary skills to gain employment in the racing industry, and for existing racing staff emphasis is placed on ensuring they receive the advice and develop the practical knowledge and experience to gain promotion within their chosen field.

For the riding course this 18 week, residential foundation course consists of 12 weeks at the NRC and 6 weeks work experience placement. It has been designed to ensure learners are competent both on the ground working with horses and also whilst riding a thoroughbred horse at exercise. Learners will receive lectures and demonstrations and will work to a routine similar to a racing stable whilst at the NRC and then complete 6 weeks work experience in a yard. The aim of this course is to prepare learners for work in a racing stable.

Learners will gain a Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care, Functional Skills qualifications, Emergency First Aid Certificate, L3 Award in the principles of transporting horses by road on short journeys, L1 Award introduction to horse racing industry, life skills including cooking, nutrition, fitness, looking after your money and talks from speakers from NASS and Racing Welfare. In addition learners also improve their self esteem, independence, self confidence and resilience.

No previous equine experience or academic qualifications are required to enrol. Applicants must not weigh more than 11 stone ready to ride (i.e. wearing skullcap, body protector and boots). All the necessary equipment

can be provided through the on site shop. Body protectors are provided for the duration of the foundation course.

Upon successful completion of the course suitable learners, with the right aptitude, will be secured permanent, full time employment in a UK racing yard, where they will become a member of the stable staff team.

Tuition is free for EU/EEA residents. Accommodation and meals for the first 12 weeks are provided in our residential centre at a one off cost of £350 which must be paid in full before commencing the course. If the family income is less than £23,000 learners are eligible to apply for a bursary of £300 towards their residential fees, specifically subsistence and meals. They will still have to pay £50. A £50 deposit/bond is required upon enrolment for accommodation; once the rooms are checked on graduation the deposit/bond will be returned in the event that there is no damage.

Page 6: Northern Racing College Prospectus · Principles of maintaining health & safety in the workplace Maintain health & safety in the workplace Principles of maintaining good working relations

This programme will include a Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care together with a Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care and Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 1.

The Intermediate Apprenticeship is completed largely at the learner’s place of work, with a member of the Northern Racing College Roving Assessor team visiting every 8 – 10 weeks to assess the skills and knowledge the learner is gaining through workplace training.

Anyone aged 16 or over, who works at least 16 hours a week in a licensed racing stable can apply. Learners must already have achieved a Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care OR an equivalent equine qualification OR have relevant occupational experience.

The qualification involves study of horse care, written work projects collecting evidence of competency and practical assessments.

An Intermediate Apprenticeship is an ideal way to increase knowledge and completion is a statement of competence to perform certain practical duties to a particular standard. Assistant Trainers’ CourseThe Assistant Trainers’ course is a three-day course reflecting the importance of the role within stables and on the racecourse. The course is also suitable for head grooms and pupil assistants.

The course covers aspects of staff management, handicapping, media training, health and safety, Racing Welfare, BHA’s licensing and security functions, Weatherbys operations and the rules of racing.

A recommendation from the trainer or a CV proving sufficient experience must accompany an application.

Trainers’ CourseThe Trainers’ course consists of three modules, which each take place over four/five days. They are a mandatory part of the criteria for a licence to train, as set by the British Horseracing Authority licensing committee but do not confer automatic right to a licence.

The aim of the course is to prepare those individuals who are on the verge of applying for a licence to run a business rather than to teach the art of training racehorses.

The modules:Module 1: Racehorse Management (to be eligible to attend this course applicants must have

achieved a Level 3 Diploma in Racehorse Care and Management).Module 2: Business SkillsModule 3: Staff ManagementThe above courses are made up of a series of seminars, which are delivered by specialist consultants, who each have extensive working knowledge of business management and the horseracing industry.

Full details regarding the course criteria and licence application forms can be found at the British Horseracing Authority’s website www.britishhorseracing.com

Racing Secretaries’ CourseThe Racing Secretaries’ course is designed to provide aspiring secretaries and newly appointed secretaries with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the trainer’s secretary, the structure of the racing industry and racing administration.

The two-day course provides a thorough grounding and allows candidates the opportunity to talk directly with key personnel from organisations such as Weatherbys, the National Trainers Federation, the British Horseracing Authority and the International Racing Bureau.

Pony Racing Training days

To ensure that junior jockeys participating in the Charles Owen sponsored pony racing series have the necessary race-riding experience, the Northern Racing College hold training days for riders aged 9 – 15. Taking place during the school holidays, training commences at 12.30pm, finishes at 4.30pm and is open to all, from those who have no previous experience of race-riding, through to seasoned jockeys. Cost of £40.

Ponies of all shapes and sizes are welcome to take part. The overall aim of a training day is to improve the junior jockey’s position, technique and confidence whilst riding at speed and to develop their understanding of race-riding and the horseracing industry.

Training days are run on a level based system:Level 1 is the introductory level for riders who are attending their first training day, and those who have not ridden in any form of pony race. Progress to the next level is determined by the Northern Racing College jockey coach.

Level 2 is designed for jockeys who have taken part in two or more pony races (on the pony they intend riding during the day); this includes Pony Club races.

Level 3 is open to riders who have taken part in two or more pony races (on the pony they intend riding during the day); this includes Pony Club pony races.

Training at all three levels includes tuition on balance, style, technique, pace, control and awareness. Training takes place on the gallops on the rider’s own pony and on the racehorse simulators. Riders receive a certificate and a training report. Riders must have their own personal accident cover and PPE skull hat, body protector (level 3 standard) and boots etc. It is not necessary to purchase racing equipment to attend the Level 1 training day. A general purpose saddle, with sufficient holes in the stirrup leathers to shorten up will be appropriate.
