The boys dominated in the PIAA Championship and took home the title for the second year in a row. Mason Gonzalez, Andrew Zhang, Jack Wright and Ricky Mihm broke the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) record in the 400 Free Relay with a 2:53:81 time. The record also beats the Bolles School Independent Schools’ record from 2012, which included Olympic gold medalists Ryan Murphy and Joseph Schooling, along with Olympian Santo Condorelli. The Boys Team placed in a number of other events throughout the two-day competition in March. First-place finishes include Mason Gonzalez in the 50 Free and 100 Free and Ricky Mihm in the 200 IM and 500 Free. Andrew Zhang was a second-place finisher in the 100 Back, Jack Wright took second place in the 100 Free and Joel Songer was awarded 13th place. In the 100 Breast, Jerry Chen placed third and Jacob McCarran took home a 15th place finish. The Boys Team won eight of the eleven events over the competition, with five wins in individual events and all three relays. The team finished with 301 points, which was 111 points over the runner-up, North Penn. The Girls Team finished in 9th place overall with a third-place 100 Back finish by Torie Buerger, a 10th place finish in the 400 Free Relay featuring Kristine Mihm, Molly Smyers, Lila McGrath, and Torie Buerger and a 19th place dive from Maya Ennis. Swimmers Break National Record

Congratulations to the Boys Swimming Team The boys dominated in the PIAA Championship and took home the title for the second year in a row

Mason Gonzalez Andrew Zhang Jack Wright and Ricky Mihm broke the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) record in the 400 Free Relay with a 25381 time The record also beats the Bolles School Independent Schoolsrsquo record from 2012 which included Olympic gold medalists Ryan Murphy and Joseph Schooling along with Olympian Santo Condorelli

The Boys Team placed in a number of other events throughout the two-day competition in March First-place finishes include Mason Gonzalez in the 50 Free and 100 Free and Ricky Mihm in the 200 IM and 500 Free Andrew Zhang was a second-place finisher in the 100 Back Jack Wright took second place in the 100 Free and Joel Songer was awarded 13th place In the 100 Breast Jerry Chen placed third and Jacob McCarran took home a 15th place finish

At the Wednesday March 21 2018 Combined Board Meeting the School Board voted unanimously to approve Mrs Caitlin Ewing as the next Principal of North Allegheny Intermediate High School effective April 2 2018 following the resignation of Principal Dr Brendan Hyland who was recently appointed the Superintendent of Plum School District Mrs Ewing has been with the District since 2015 and was most recently the Assistant Principal at NAI Read more about Mrs Ewing here

The Dangers of Teens amp Vaping

The annual Spring Community Connections Seminar was held on Wednesday April 4 2018 Attendees heard from professionals in the healthcare and rehabilitation fields regarding the risks associated with the use of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices If you missed the seminar click here to view it online

NA School Board Receives D Richard Wynn Award

The North Allegheny School Board was selected as one of the 2017-2018 D Richard Wynn Distinguished School Board Award recipients The award was presented on Thursday March 15 2018 at the 70th Annual Tri-State Area School Study Council School Board and Distinguished Educator Banquet at the Edgewood Country Club

The D Richard Wynn Award was presented to the NA Board based on innovative work done during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years including the implementation of the FOCUS 2020 program the Measuring Success Framework and student and staff wellness initiatives

NASH Students Win Scholastic Writing Contest Medals

North Allegheny is pleased to announce that Amanda Lu (left) and Rin Swann (right) have earned National Medals in the 2018 Scholastic Art amp Writing Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists amp Writers Their work was selected by creative professionals as the most accomplished in the nation Amanda won for her personal essay called ldquoMemoirs of an American-Born Chineserdquo and Rin for her science fiction story entitled ldquoCash Credit or Memoriesrdquo Rinrsquos piece also won an American Voices Medal

This year nearly 350000 works of art and writing were submitted Less than 1 were recognized at the national level Students receiving top Awards have been invited to attend a ceremony at the world-famous Carnegie Hall on June 7 and to participate in showcase events at Parsons School for Design at The New School and Pratt Institutersquos Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York City

NA Hosts ESL Family Night

Over 200 students and parents attended the ESL Family Night on Thursday March 22 2018 at CMS which celebrates students and their families from different cultures

The event included information from the District about the ESL program along with a pot-luck style dinner where families brought food to represent their culture

Many local businesses provided gift cards and products for a raffle which included roughly $3500 of donated products for students and their families The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and Northland Library also set up tables to provide resources and activities during the evening

Congratulations to six NASH seniors who were selected to receive special scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their hard work and academic success

Thank you to those who participated in the annual A Taste of North Allegheny event on Saturday March 24 The event was a great success raising nearly $14000 for North Allegheny classrooms

Event attendees enjoyed an evening filled with live entertainment from NA students food from a variety of local restaurants a raffle and silent auction

Congratulations to the North Allegheny Speech and Debate Team for winning the State Championship On March 17 the team stole the competition with a 399-point total over Upper St Clairrsquos runner-up score of 3395 points

Congratulations to Senior Riley Smith Riley recently came in first place in the state in the ldquoWrite Off Poetryrdquo Division during the Student Journalism Contest The Contest was run by the PA School Press Association and held on March 27 at Penn State University To win this honor Riley wrote a poem in 40 minutes during the competition entitled ldquoBe Good Be Smartrdquo

APRIL 2018 High School Students Receive Awards at FCCLA State Leadership Conference

Several students from NASH NAI and AW Beattie traveled to the Pocono Mountains to compete against 400 other students at the 2018 Pennsylvania Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference during the week of March 12 2018

Deitra Harnish earned first place in the state with a silver medal in Fashion Construction In this event she created a design inspired by the Met Gala She sketched and constructed a full-length sequin dress which will be showcased at the upcoming ldquoMet Galardquo fashion show on April 21 Parastoo Aramesh received a gold medal and high score for her project in the Recycle Redesign category Parastoorsquos dress which was showcased at the 2017 Salvation Army Garbage Bag Gala in November was made of recycled Macyrsquos bags and tissue paper flowers AW Beattie student Damion Hartle received first place and a gold medal for Knife Skills as well Their top scores qualify them to compete on the Pennsylvania team at the national FCCLA conference this summer in Atlanta GA

Jillian Senrud and Isabella Narduzzi received silver medals in Chapter in Review Display Hannah Lelis received a bronze medal in Illustrated Talk and Christina Zhou received a bronze medal in Life Event Planning Students from AW Beattie also received several medals at the conference including Owen Dodge who received a bronze medal for Culinary Arts Olivia Chesmer who received a silver medal for advocacy and Ryane Taylor who received a silver medal for Focus on Children

FCCLA promotes growth and leadership through a Family and Consumer Sciences focus The organization focuses on multiple roles of family members and allows members to develop life skills through character development career preparation critical thinking and more

Middle School GOAL Students Participate

in Stock Market Challenge

Over 50 Middle School GOAL students from CMS IMS and MMS have spent the last several months learning how companies form grow and issue stock to raise funds as well as how to research evaluate and select stocks Students have practiced using online sources to gather important data and information about potential investments and used this to build a practice portfolio of Pittsburgh-based companies that are traded on the stock market Guest lecturers from St Vincent College and Hefren-Tillotson have provided instruction and assistance to students preparing practice portfolios

IMS Says No to Tobacco

On Wednesday March 28 2018 IMS held its annual ldquoKick Butts Dayrdquo assembly to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco usage This is the 11th year for the program which is led by Health amp PE Teacher Margo ldquoCoachrdquo Hinton A team of staff and students put together a powerful and fun assembly for the entire student body and staff Students took center stage with anti-smoking raps and poems guest DJ performances and recited together a Tobacco Free Pledge Dr Thomas Rice a UPMC pulmonologist and IMS parent shared information about the effects of tobacco on the body along with the importance of never starting

BWE MMS Host STEAM Nights

Students and their families had the opportunity for hands-on activities and visual displays at the Bradford Woods STEAM Expo on February 23 (top picture) and the MMS STEAM Night on March 22 (bottom picture)

Topics included physical science earth and space science technology and biology during these fun-filled and educational evenings

2018 School Bus Safety Poster Contest

Students in grades K-8 may now submit artwork for the annual School Bus Safety Poster Contest Completed poster designs must be turned in to the main office of the studentrsquos building by the end of the school day on Wednesday May 9 The posters will be judged on Thursday May 10 This year NA will be accepting artwork for five different divisions Grades K-2 Grades 3-5 Grades 6-8 Special Education and Computer Aided Drawing For complete rules and guidelines please visit this link on the Districtrsquos website

Jump Rope for Heart Yields Another Successful Year

Each year in February NA schools participate in Jump Rope for Heart which promotes heart health and education among students In addition to learning students have the opportunity to donate to the American Heart Association (AHA) Since 1999 North Allegheny Elementary Schools have raised $900100 for AHA through Jump Rope for Heart and the Middle Schools have contributed over $48000 Many of the participating schools have set a goal of reaching the $1 million mark next year

APRIL 2018 High School Students Receive Awards at FCCLA State Leadership Conference

Several students from NASH NAI and AW Beattie traveled to the Pocono Mountains to compete against 400 other students at the 2018 Pennsylvania Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference during the week of March 12 2018

Deitra Harnish earned first place in the state with a silver medal in Fashion Construction In this event she created a design inspired by the Met Gala She sketched and constructed a full-length sequin dress which will be showcased at the upcoming ldquoMet Galardquo fashion show on April 21 Parastoo Aramesh received a gold medal and high score for her project in the Recycle Redesign category Parastoorsquos dress which was showcased at the 2017 Salvation Army Garbage Bag Gala in November was made of recycled Macyrsquos bags and tissue paper flowers AW Beattie student Damion Hartle received first place and a gold medal for Knife Skills as well Their top scores qualify them to compete on the Pennsylvania team at the national FCCLA conference this summer in Atlanta GA

Jillian Senrud and Isabella Narduzzi received silver medals in Chapter in Review Display Hannah Lelis received a bronze medal in Illustrated Talk and Christina Zhou received a bronze medal in Life Event Planning Students from AW Beattie also received several medals at the conference including Owen Dodge who received a bronze medal for Culinary Arts Olivia Chesmer who received a silver medal for advocacy and Ryane Taylor who received a silver medal for Focus on Children

FCCLA promotes growth and leadership through a Family and Consumer Sciences focus The organization focuses on multiple roles of family members and allows members to develop life skills through character development career preparation critical thinking and more

Middle School GOAL Students Participate

in Stock Market Challenge

Over 50 Middle School GOAL students from CMS IMS and MMS have spent the last several months learning how companies form grow and issue stock to raise funds as well as how to research evaluate and select stocks Students have practiced using online sources to gather important data and information about potential investments and used this to build a practice portfolio of Pittsburgh-based companies that are traded on the stock market Guest lecturers from St Vincent College and Hefren-Tillotson have provided instruction and assistance to students preparing practice portfolios

IMS Says No to Tobacco

On Wednesday March 28 2018 IMS held its annual ldquoKick Butts Dayrdquo assembly to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco usage This is the 11th year for the program which is led by Health amp PE Teacher Margo ldquoCoachrdquo Hinton A team of staff and students put together a powerful and fun assembly for the entire student body and staff Students took center stage with anti-smoking raps and poems guest DJ performances and recited together a Tobacco Free Pledge Dr Thomas Rice a UPMC pulmonologist and IMS parent shared information about the effects of tobacco on the body along with the importance of never starting

BWE MMS Host STEAM Nights

Students and their families had the opportunity for hands-on activities and visual displays at the Bradford Woods STEAM Expo on February 23 (top picture) and the MMS STEAM Night on March 22 (bottom picture)

Topics included physical science earth and space science technology and biology during these fun-filled and educational evenings

2018 School Bus Safety Poster Contest

Students in grades K-8 may now submit artwork for the annual School Bus Safety Poster Contest Completed poster designs must be turned in to the main office of the studentrsquos building by the end of the school day on Wednesday May 9 The posters will be judged on Thursday May 10 This year NA will be accepting artwork for five different divisions Grades K-2 Grades 3-5 Grades 6-8 Special Education and Computer Aided Drawing For complete rules and guidelines please visit this link on the Districtrsquos website

Jump Rope for Heart Yields Another Successful Year

Each year in February NA schools participate in Jump Rope for Heart which promotes heart health and education among students In addition to learning students have the opportunity to donate to the American Heart Association (AHA) Since 1999 North Allegheny Elementary Schools have raised $900100 for AHA through Jump Rope for Heart and the Middle Schools have contributed over $48000 Many of the participating schools have set a goal of reaching the $1 million mark next year

NASH Students Win Scholastic Writing Contest Medals

North Allegheny is pleased to announce that Amanda Lu (left) and Rin Swann (right) have earned National Medals in the 2018 Scholastic Art amp Writing Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists amp Writers Their work was selected by creative professionals as the most accomplished in the nation Amanda won for her personal essay called ldquoMemoirs of an American-Born Chineserdquo and Rin for her science fiction story entitled ldquoCash Credit or Memoriesrdquo Rinrsquos piece also won an American Voices Medal

This year nearly 350000 works of art and writing were submitted Less than 1 were recognized at the national level Students receiving top Awards have been invited to attend a ceremony at the world-famous Carnegie Hall on June 7 and to participate in showcase events at Parsons School for Design at The New School and Pratt Institutersquos Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York City

NA Hosts ESL Family Night

Over 200 students and parents attended the ESL Family Night on Thursday March 22 2018 at CMS which celebrates students and their families from different cultures

The event included information from the District about the ESL program along with a pot-luck style dinner where families brought food to represent their culture

Many local businesses provided gift cards and products for a raffle which included roughly $3500 of donated products for students and their families The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and Northland Library also set up tables to provide resources and activities during the evening

NASH Seniors Receive National Merit Scholarship Corporation Awards

Congratulations to six NASH seniors who were selected to receive special scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their hard work and academic success

Over 50 Middle School GOAL students from CMS IMS and MMS have spent the last several months learning how companies form grow and issue stock to raise funds as well as how to research evaluate and select stocks Students have practiced using online sources to gather important data and information about potential investments and used this to build a practice portfolio of Pittsburgh-based companies that are traded on the stock market Guest lecturers from St Vincent College and Hefren-Tillotson have provided instruction and assistance to students preparing practice portfolios

On Wednesday March 28 2018 IMS held its annual ldquoKick Butts Dayrdquo assembly to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco usage This is the 11th year for the program which is led by Health amp PE Teacher Margo ldquoCoachrdquo Hinton A team of staff and students put together a powerful and fun assembly for the entire student body and staff Students took center stage with anti-smoking raps and poems guest DJ performances and recited together a Tobacco Free Pledge Dr Thomas Rice a UPMC pulmonologist and IMS parent shared information about the effects of tobacco on the body along with the importance of never starting

Students and their families had the opportunity for hands-on activities and visual displays at the Bradford Woods STEAM Expo on February 23 (top picture) and the MMS STEAM Night on March 22 (bottom picture)

Each year in February NA schools participate in Jump Rope for Heart which promotes heart health and education among students In addition to learning students have the opportunity to donate to the American Heart Association (AHA) Since 1999 North Allegheny Elementary Schools have raised $900100 for AHA through Jump Rope for Heart and the Middle Schools have contributed over $48000 Many of the participating schools have set a goal of reaching the $1 million mark next year

APRIL 2018 High School Students Receive Awards at FCCLA State Leadership Conference

Several students from NASH NAI and AW Beattie traveled to the Pocono Mountains to compete against 400 other students at the 2018 Pennsylvania Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference during the week of March 12 2018

Deitra Harnish earned first place in the state with a silver medal in Fashion Construction In this event she created a design inspired by the Met Gala She sketched and constructed a full-length sequin dress which will be showcased at the upcoming ldquoMet Galardquo fashion show on April 21 Parastoo Aramesh received a gold medal and high score for her project in the Recycle Redesign category Parastoorsquos dress which was showcased at the 2017 Salvation Army Garbage Bag Gala in November was made of recycled Macyrsquos bags and tissue paper flowers AW Beattie student Damion Hartle received first place and a gold medal for Knife Skills as well Their top scores qualify them to compete on the Pennsylvania team at the national FCCLA conference this summer in Atlanta GA

2018 School Bus Safety Poster Contest

Students in grades K-8 may now submit artwork for the annual School Bus Safety Poster Contest Completed poster designs must be turned in to the main office of the studentrsquos building by the end of the school day on Wednesday May 9 The posters will be judged on Thursday May 10 This year NA will be accepting artwork for five different divisions Grades K-2 Grades 3-5 Grades 6-8 Special Education and Computer Aided Drawing For complete rules and guidelines please visit this link on the Districtrsquos website

Jump Rope for Heart Yields Another Successful Year

Each year in February NA schools participate in Jump Rope for Heart which promotes heart health and education among students In addition to learning students have the opportunity to donate to the American Heart Association (AHA) Since 1999 North Allegheny Elementary Schools have raised $900100 for AHA through Jump Rope for Heart and the Middle Schools have contributed over $48000 Many of the participating schools have set a goal of reaching the $1 million mark next year
