Three deliverables:

1. Install a prototype digital research space within the Front Hall for both individual and collaborative working.

2. Design and build user interfaces and workstation arrays that demonstrate a vision for multimedia digital research.

3. Evaluate the individual and group user experiences in this technology-rich environment and inform the Digital Research Centre programme and other future service proposition development

A project to help us design and deliver future research services and environments with a view to the “Land to the North” and our 2020 Vision

findings

Resources: advanced search and reference management tools win the day

Researchers want advanced search functionality that goes beyond text

An average of 40% of survey respondents said they are inclined to use tools

they learned about in Growing Knowledge

Better organisation of research papers on one’s own machine

findings [continued]

Research space: free wi-fi and their own gear

Wi-fi access is, not surprisingly, rated as ‘essential’ to a physical research library

A library workstation is only desirable if it provides a greater access to resources other than one’s own computer

Ultimately remote access to resources was more important than physically visiting the library.

recommendation

Focus efforts on the greater provision of remote access to our physical resources

Provide greater access to advanced search and reference management tools and develop a more comprehensive training role to facilitate their effective use.

Move away from viewing ourselves simply as content providers and acknowledge key role in facilitating the full digital research process.
