  • Windsor’s  Waste-Free Wednesdays The Windsor Ecology Club is sponsoring “Waste-free Wednesdays” throughout the school year. Whether your child brings a lunch from home or has a school lunch, the amount of waste can be reduced or eliminated.

When planning lunches for your children this school year, please help us minimize food and packaging waste by packing a waste-free lunch every Wednesday and as often as you can!

    A Waste-free Lunch Pack...

Lunches in reusable containers Drinks in a thermos or reusable container A cloth napkin Reusable utensils when needed A reusable lunchbox or backpack

    A Disposable Lunch

    Avoid...

Lunches packed in plastic bags, foil, wax paper Prepackaged lunches Prepackaged single-serve lunch items Paper napkins Disposable drink boxes, pouches, cans, cartons,

and bottles Disposable forks and spoons

It has been estimated that on average a single school-age child generates 67 pounds of lunchtime waste per school year, or 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for one average-size elementary school. Every single piece of packaging or excess food that we eliminate from the waste stream makes a difference. Let's do our part!

Here are a few suggestions for making it work:

If your children are making their own lunches, be sure to monitor food quantities. (Looking through the Windsor garbage cans after lunch, we found large quantities of unopened prepackaged foods, including single-serve yogurts, cheese sticks, goldfish, and pretzels. We also found whole, uneaten apples, large bunches of grapes, and many near-full juice boxes, pouches, and cans. )

Children of all ages can take responsibility for putting recyclables in the recycle bin in the commons. SD25 Foam lunch trays are recycled but only if they are wiped off. Please encourage your child to

“whack, wipe and stack” their food tray.

Please remember every Wednesday is “Waste-free Wednesday”.

Thank you for your help! Windsor Ecology Club

What is Junior Great Books? Junior Great Books (JGB) is an extracurricular, enriched reading program open to 1st-5th grade students at Windsor School. Children meet in informal groups with parent leaders to read and discuss selected short stories. The stories include fairytales and folktales from around the globe. Through these stories, students are introduced to themes and prose from other cultures in a setting that encourages critical thinking and fosters a LOVE of reading!!

When will students meet for Junior Great Books? The Junior Great Books program will run from mid-January-March 2013 (exact dates TBD). Students will meet once each week for 30 minutes during lunch recess. Each student will need a book to participate in the program. How can I sign my child up for the Junior Great Books program? If your child is interested in this fun and enriching experience, please read and fill out the form below and return it to school by Friday, November 16, along with your check made payable to Windsor PTA if you need to order a book. The books for the JGB program cannot be purchased at a bookstore, however, we do have a few Windsor copies to loan out, which are available on a first come, first served basis. For more information and to see the book titles for each grade level, please visit the Windsor Junior Great Books website at http://windsorjgb.weebly.com/. You can also find a link for this site on the Windsor PTA website in the Kids in Clubs section and under the Links section. Can I volunteer to lead or co-lead a group? YES, please do!! We need volunteers. The program cannot run without discussion leaders. It’s a great way to get involved! Can I donate my old Junior Great Books? Absolutely! You can drop off your Jr. Great Books donations to the Windsor school office.

If you have any questions about the JGB program, or you are interested in borrowing a Windsor copy, please contact Kathy Riesing at [email protected]
