Get out of the office on August 13!

Tom Ahern & Simone Joyaux

We all know times are tough. Many organizations are reducing staff, cutting travel and training bud-gets, and minimizing costs wherever possible. Your local AFP conference committee knew that these cutbacks were likely, so we organized the best pos-sible local conference you can attend this year.

If you can afford only one training opportunity for yourself, your staff, your CEO, or your board, make this the one you attend. It’s the best deal in town at only $99 for current AFP members and $119 for non-members.

Maybe you’re wondering why we’re calling it the best deal in town? Maybe you’re not sure if it’s worth a day out of the office? Trust me, it’s worth it!Our featured presenters are Simone Joyaux, ACFRE and Tom Ahern, ABC. Both are known internation-ally for their work with the not-for-profit commu-nity, and both have presented numerous times at the International AFP conference. They are co-authors of the outstanding book, Keep Your Donors: The Guide to Better Communications and Stronger Re-lationships.

Simone’s first session will focus on problems and trends in fund development including: bad fundraising behaviors, problematic vo-cabulary, culture of philanthropy, defining major gifts, and much more. Her lunch-time presentation will focus on building relationships with your donors that will last through any economy. Her energetic style is sure to keep you interested and en-gaged while the information she presents will stay with you long after the day ends.

Tom’s sessions revolve primarily around your communications with donors. His

session on creating a great case for donor support couldn’t be timelier. From your annual appeal to capital campaign, this session is sure to give valu-able insight on how you can better tell your charity’s story. Tom’s second session, “Your donor com-munications, bless their hearts: Are they any good? The amazing do-it-yourself audit” is sure to be a big hit. With a title like that, you’re sure to be laughing out loud!

In addition to our out-of-town presenters, we have talented local experts joining the line-up with pre-sentations on planned giving, fundraising in a one-person shop, getting control of social networking, leadership that makes a difference, and keeping yourself marketable.

The day is sure to be a great opportunity for net-working and learning, but it also promises to be a day of rejuvenation and fun! And, the most excit-ing part for many attendees…comfortable chairs this year! Just be sure to remember our location change!Check your mailboxes for the registration form, or register online at http://afpmemphis.afpnet.org/Chapter_Conference.aspx. The form is also avail-able at the end of this newsletter.

Notes from the July meeting

To begin, there was a brief presentation on the state of Giving, both nationally and locally, by Leo Arnoult and Debra Czestochowski. A sum-mary of Leo’s remarks can be found later in this newsletter and the report “Downstream and In Demand: Mid-South Nonprofits and the Economic Crisis” can be found at the website of the Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence at http://www.npexcellence.org/docu-ments/DownstreamReportFI-NAL.pdf

The program speaker, Joe Birch, gave a warm and in-sightful talk on his fundrais-ing efforts over the years, particularly on behalf of the Gibson 5K run, now 13 years old. Joe noted that he had several models for good phi-lanthropy over the years and that he was determined to “do it right” when he decided to get involved. He is gratified to see what he has been able to accomplish - in spite of the current economy and greater demand for nonprofit services - and told the membership that he would continue to do whatever he could to help any of our organizations in his ca-pacity as “town crier” for the city.

“No other book on the market addresses the primary role of fundraisers—building relation-ships. The duo of expertise from Tom Ahern and Simone Joyaux make this the book to own. An instant classic.” — Susan F. Rice, ACFRE, former chair, CFRE International

“A broadly nuanced view of written and per-sonal fund development communications and their purpose—creating and sustaining relation-ships—that embraces philosophy, strategy, and practical tips. The counterpoint of their style in-trigues, and their prose is lively and surprising: interspersing anecdotes with intermezzos with powerful challenges to the way we approach our work and our relationships. Bravo!” — Kay Sprinkel Grace, Principal, Transforming Philan-thropy, LLC

“Be prepared to laugh out loud and stay up late. A must add to your personal collection, espe-cially if you’re working toward your CFRE!”— Amanda Kohr, Board Member, AFP Mem-phis Chapter

Giving Down by 2% in 2008 - Local AFP survey concurs

According to Giving USA, the annual report on charita-ble giving released in June, national giving in 2008 was $307.65 billion, the second highest amount recorded, and eclipsed only by the total giving in 2007. In spite of this fact, giving was down by 2% overall in 2008, a much lower drop than the media was forecasting. How-ever, giving did drop in the last quarter of 2008 and by all accounts continued its drop in the first quarter of 2009 with the continuing fall in the stock market.

Leo Arnoult, CFRE, reported at our July meeting the results of a very limited response to a summer survey of AFP members that asked how their giving in 2008 compared with results for 2007 and also how giving to date in 2009 compares with the same time in 2008. “This represents only the respondents and in no way is projectable to the general population,” he stressed. 24 members and 3 non members responded. Almost forty percent (38.5%) experienced an increase while about 31% stayed the same. A third experienced a decline in 2008 over 2007 results. Approximately two thirds reported a decrease in 2009 year-to-date versus 2008. Giving USA does not forecast giving in 2009 or any year so ultimately whether giving overall increases or decreases we will have to wait until June 2010 to de-termine approximately what happens overall this year.

Best advice: Keep Making a Compelling Case!

(AFP chapter members get 40% off on the entire Giv-ing USA report on Giving in 2008 by using this link for a discount which expires on August 1, 2009. The book has much valuable information on giving beyond the sources and where it went and ways to use this infor-mation strategically. https://www.givinginstitute.org/secure/)

Editor’s note:Two additional documents are provided at the end of this newsletter: a summary of the Giving USA report and Arnoult’s recommendations on how nonprofits can respond in uncertain economic time.

August Audioconference

Creating a Successful Fundraising Culture: Twelve Tools for Motivating Your Board

Presenter: Carole V. Rylander, CFRE

Wednesday, August 12, 2009 • 12:00-1:30 pm

at BRIDGES, 477 N. Fifth St., Memphis, TN

Why are so many volunteers and staff members re-luctant to participate in approaching prospects and donors? How can board chairs, development com-mittee members, nonprofit CEOs and professional fundraising staff lead their board teams to own -- and even enjoy -- the essential and ultimately reward-ing work of major gifts fundraising? In this practical train the trainer session, topics address the needs of nonprofit leaders who want to increase volunteer and staff participation in approaching and engaging pros-pects and donors.

Learning Objectives: This workshop provides 12 tools and activities that board lead-ership and staff can use to:• Provide a framework for understanding prospect and donor needs • Increase the comfort level and confidence of staff and volunteers in approaching prospects and donors.

Target Audience: anyone who needs tools/materials to train their board in concepts about raising money to motivate them and gain their cooperation will ben-efit from this session. Appropriate for all levels.

Remember audio conferences are free to AFP mem-bers and $10 for non-members. Please be seated by 11:45 am.

Our ongoing thanks and appreciation to Christian Brothers University and to the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis for their

ongoing support and the use of their facilities for our luncheon and board meetings.

AFP Memphis needs your support for the 2009 Every Member Campaign!

Through a grant from RuffaloCody - who will be doing all campaign calling for free - AFP Memphis Chapter members will begin receiving phone calls asking for Every Member Campaign support beginning August 3, 2009. By making a gift to the 2009 Every Member Campaign, you can help our AFP Memphis Chapter reach our chapter goal of $3,325.00! Supporting the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy helps determine the future growth and development of an ethical fundraising profession. The programs supported by your gift increase public awareness of philan-thropy and understanding of fundraising everywhere AFP has a presence, but certainly here in the Mid-South. Please consider supporting the AFP Foundation and helping our chapter meet our fundraising goal by making your pledge or gift during the upcoming phone effort, via the web at http://www.afpnet.org or by contacting Chris Chastain, the Memphis Chapter 2009 Every Member Campaign chair at [email protected].
