Congratulations, you're a 1997 member of the best Morgan Club in America. This is April, and as promised, it's TRAVELOGUE TIME. Destination - Morgan's by the Bay (Tokyo Bay that is).

November in Tokyo is not unlike the Pacific Northwest, drizzly wet and cool. Having tempted fate, I arrived on Thursday to light rain. Friday it stormed, and then Saturday was intermittent gloop. Saturday night I sacrificed a bottle of sake to the Rain gods. I arose early Sunday expecting the worst. You can't image my elation when through the early morning mist, there proudly flew Old Glory above the US Embassy.

My host for the days touring was Scotty Uenoyama, Editor, The Great Runabout. Scotty arrived promptly at 8 AM, performing a sharp gymkhana turn up the steep ramp at the ANA Hotel in his dashing 4/4. To everyone's delight, we set off topless through the vacant thoroughfares of downtown Tokyo. The views were marvelous without all the cars, and the pace was better than a Bullet Train. We flew down the Expressway past the old Tokyo airport and the Kawasaki industrial region to the tourist car park at the base of the Rainbow Bridge. There we were joined by two more MSCCJ members. Masami Ohta-san, Director, International Affairs, was driving one of the prettiest modern +4's that I've seen, steel gray panels with a red hood. Shoki Uenoyama, a local Teppanyaki chef, and Scotty's nephew was astride his orange (and very fast) +8.

After the round of introductions, car appreciation ceremonies, and sightseeing of Tokyo Bay, we set off on our run to the temple city of Kamakura. Blasting past Yokohama we turned south onto the Miura-Hanto Peninsula which separates Tokyo Bay from Sagami Bay.

Those of you who read National Geographic will recognize Sagami Bay as the extremely deep sea canyon that comes within a kilometer of the coast. In our stealthy Mogs, we quickly whizzed past the US Naval Base at Yokuska, to our first destination, a French Hotel with a patio overlooking the western Pacific Ocean. While savoring the view, we took on an ample supply of body warming fluids, so necessary for true Mogmotoring. We headed out again, this time down a long straight beach road. What a thrill for the tourists to see three such magnificent cars at speed in the same day.

Next stop, Miura, where the owner of the local waterfront Bistro had cleared spot for the Morgans at his front door. From the deck, we could watch the International Sailboat Championships (I forget the class, but they were big). Lunch was a glorious variety of seafood and lots of Asahi Super Dry. We finally headed for Kamakura, our last stop. Unfortunately we didn't stop, since it turns out that Sunday Nov 10 is Boys Day, a very big day for families in Japan. We were in grid lock under the famous TorU Gate of Kamakura, which bridges the main highway. Weaving through traffic and then winding over a magnificent mountain, we arrived back at the junction with the Expressway. Another fast motor and we were back in Tokyo, just as the rain returned. My thanks go out to MSCCJ for its outstanding hospitality and an excellent event

North of the 49th, from got-i Theroux...,.

Anatomy of a HEARTBREAK/HEART-THROB RUN - we had a theme, we had a day - Feb. 22, we even had a (my opinion ) great place selected for lunch - JAKE TURTLES. The notices were sent out by fax, e-mail and the one that still suits me - snail mail. With less than 36 hours to kick off, a call from the manager of the beer hut of choice says that the quiet corner we had confirmed was not to be; the convention center of the golf course had booked a convention with 500 to attend. We said thanks but no thanks for that day. Now the rush was on find a new location that met the taste buds and budgets of our northern pod. This done, all the backtracking with notices to our group in the event someone goes direct to the PUB, we missed TINA and LARRY SHARP on the fax. (SORRY) They confirmed we had been booked for lunch and waited and waited but we were no shows. The up side is they confirmed JAKE TURTLES has Great Burgers. Will try to put this on the agenda again!

The kick off for the day was excellent weather and the smile on LES BURKHOLDER'S face when he and JUNE emerged from the Lougheed Mall keen to show us all the new/old toys he had found, his best coup was the MG

TO. We were soon Joined by DAVE COLLIS, AL ALLISON and TED CAREW GIBSON in his steel topped auto, with the true Morgan stalwart of the family EVAN and his friend MICHAEL. With the clear warm day all hoods were down, EVAN and MICHAEL were invited to ride shotgun with AL and DAVE. By the time we had cruised the north side of the river and were waiting for the ferry at Albion, we were pleased to see a late arrival. TED LATURNUS shows up mumbling something about traffic (GLAD WE GAVE A ROUTE OUTLINE ON THE FAX.) He had to wait for the next boat. The lady attendant told him there was no way he could jump the queue no matter how cute his car was. POWLEYS joined us at the PORT HELLS INN and we were able to get on with the business of the day, eat, have a cold ale and get gobs of info on up-coming events.

At the VANCOUVER ABFM, over the past several years the food services on site have improved to the point that club members should be able to satisfy their appetites at the many concession stands. There is a barbecue dinner and frolic planned after the meet; directions will be handed out during the day - look forward to seeing you May 17 1,

Midland Mat; ter, from Terry Cmp!e!!.

Three right hand drive Morgans and fifteen various owners, restorers and envious hopefuls attended the Midlands Center meeting at Betty Sue's Urban Bar-B-Q last month. Mike Amos steered a visiting Morganeer, Bruce Jenkins, from Vermont to the meeting. Bruce is restoring a 1961 +4 roadster and brought some photos of his nearly complete project. It should be a great summer for Bruce. Mike also provided two door prizes, a copy of Bowler's "Classic Cars From Around the World" won by President Gill and Dave Wellington took home an advanced copy of the Bellevue All Brit. poster for this year. Which three righties attended the meeting? you ask - Mike Amos' 4/4, Craig Runions' +4 and Patton Buchan's +4. Our thanks to Sue Grosz for the great bar-b-q in a pleasant location.

NEW MEETING LOCATION!! Our next meetinQ will be held at the BriQht Street Pub &

Café, 4332 Leary Way NW, Seattle. I have had a couple of lunches there and find it very pleasant. Currently Miki Klarich and Claudio Lund have 4 beers on tap (6 are promised by the 17th of April) including Haystack Black by Portland Brewing, 12 assorted bottled beers and a 14 entree menu. 9 of the entrees are $7, 3 are $10, 1 is $8. Miki says that some have commented that her burgers are as good as those served at the now defunct 318 Tavern. They are just as tasty but not as drippy. I always felt like I needed a shower after a lunch at the 318. Miki has promised separate checks and has thoughtfully provided a Morgan sized parking lot in front of the building. Claudio is a car guy too, (Packards, I think.) and has been invited to sit in with us. Bright Street Pub is on the North side of the street, hopefully between the Ballard and Fremont bridges!

southern Chatter, from Heinz .Stromcuit....

I finally figured out why MOG Northwest has monthly social meetings in three different cities; it provides the traveling membership with alternative entertainment when they're out of town on business. Case in point, to the surprise and delight of the southies present (and there was a grand total of 14 in March) Daryl Ozuna strolled in, sat down and during the course of the evening, entertained us with stories of the club's early days. This kind of unannounced visit deserves to be encouraged, it's great fun and certainly enlivens the I event.

For some reason our conversation took a wild detour to down under, through VVC

New Zealand and Dunlop and

Australia, as we If You Have a Wheel an

discussed the quality 408479 of the beer 800-WIRE-\ (generally assumed http:/fwwv.

to be bad) which 1650 Mansfield

according to Mike Miles, has four X's on the can because knows how to spell beer!! Dwight reveale previous-life experiences on New Ze misnamed 90 mile beach where Oyst( scooped-up and eaten by the brav foolish?) as they walk along. There was Nevil Shute and Ayers Rock which, accot

Malcolm, turns out to be an ancient reef and not the monolith larger than Beacon Rock that some visiting Australian relatives once insisted it was - one of those discussions akin to my-Morgan-goes-faster-than-your-Morgan.

We again discussed the dilemma of what to do about the Portland Field Meet and have still not found a satisfactory solution. We have been told that the larger participating clubs are chipping in to improve the event but that has little bearing on the general mood of the MOG

Northwest members who have voiced an opinion. At this point, it looks as though some of us will do a mini tour, others will attend the field meet and we will all gather that evening at the Smith's.

The monthly show and tell

included the February '97 issue of Classic & Sports Car which featured an article on the search for the best ever Plus 8, a Plus 4 model ordered from North Coast Miniature Motors (Malcolm has the particulars) and a classy looking one-off Morgan sweat shirt made by Sandy Glover and modeled by Eric.

Announcement - Bellevue All British Field Meet

The 'Bellevue Field Meet' is adding a new exhibit area this year. They are going to recreate the 'Earl's Court 1967 Auto Show'. Each Marque will set up its own 'factory display'. The cars in this display will be judged separately from the regular displays ( I assume we will be judged based on the entire display). As the owner of the only '67 Drophead in the club, I feel it is my duty to participate. I would like to make this a club activity. I invite the owners of the other '67's to join in the fun. There should be ample opportunity for everyone to do something. What we need are memorabilia from 1967 Great Britain. Records, posters, clothes, but mostly Morgan stuff. So look into the dark corners of your storage areas, and find those rare jewels. This is our chance to once again show that Morgan Owners have more fun. Gil Stegen

On Automotive Engineering submitted by Mike Powley

If a component requires four fasteners to hold it together, then.....

the English will use four that are made out of a dissimilar material to the unit and through electrolytic action will corrode to the point that they can't be removed without using a drill.

the Italians and French will use three spring clip thingies that once removed can not be reused and have been generally unavailable in the United States for at least 14 years.

the Germans will use six stainless steel, fine metric threaded fasteners that, once in place, are protected by a high grade, semi-transparent, clip on (eight clips) vinyl cover.

the Americans will make it of ground-up recycled plastic soft drink containers in Mexico and install it in Canada and ask for US tax credits. The part will never fail but at 30,000 mile intervals, it will send a signal to activate a flashing dashboard warning light that has to be reset by a factory trained mechanic with a special tool at the local dealership for about $60!

and the Japanese will make a factory sealed part out of black plastic and hide it inside another component. It will work just fine.

Alternate accommodations for the LaConner event any questions - please call Bert (360) 466-3284 or Mike (604) 261-0901

Dear Sir:

l am very interested in Morgan 3 wheel racing and race cars. Any information would be a great help. I am also looking to buy a racing 3-wheeler. Thank you.

Friends: The last two lessons were of interest mainly

to those poor souls whose cars were bare pickle. Today's exercise can be done by anyone who can squeeze toothpaste, and will extend greatly the running life of the foundation (i.e. chassis) of our four wheeled fantasies.

Road crud, rain water and Lord knows what else seeps between the chassis and three essential areas, but.....we will put an end to that by using only one pinkie and a common cartridge gun loaded with ones' favorite goop.

We begin by opening the bonnet and looking at where the front wing and the footwell meet. (Ed. note - we all know our bonnets and our wings, don't we?) Water pours down past the headlamp and cascades between the footwell and the inner wing which lies just under the front wing. Liberal applications of goop where the wing meets the footwell and down the joint with the inner wing then along the rear engine bay crossmember where it meets the firewall or bulkhead as they call it in Malvern.

INSU'VTWdT cs I&L-

That bulkhead-firewall is an extremely essential piece in the integrity of our little dears and every one I've seen out of the chassis was lace. Lace is where there is more air than metal. So we need to preserve the bulkhead. The one that is now there is paid for and it fits. New ones are near $400 and they don't fit.

Next we move forward, still in the engine bay, to where the sub-frame's triangular leaf rest along side the chassis and the inner wing. Go completely around the three sides of this to keep any moisture from further mischief.

The last area is where the rear shock absorber mounts are bolted to the chassis just forward of the rear axle. (Ed. note - see last month's article) This is a 4" x 9" piece of 3/16" steel and it gets good and wet where it faces the chassis. So all around this piece.

For my choice of goop, GE makes pretty good stuff, four bucks a tube. The object of the exercise is to keep water out of these mating surfaces. Any fashion of doing that is legal.

NEW REGALIA TO BE OFFERRED Dick and Nancy Dice

Four new articles of clothing, a rerun of the boat anchor badges, and several styles of engraved glassware will soon be available for MOGNW members.

Polo shirts and denim shirts carrying embroidered Morgan wings surrounded by our club name on the left breast will first be available for the VanDusen Field Meet. Sweatshirts with this same logo will be available at the time of the Portland All-Brit. Tee-shirts with the "swoop" side view of a Morgan, similar to those prepared by the Island Morgan Cell, will also be available for the VanDusen Meet. (Grady Meyer tee-shirts and sweat shirts, and tee-shirts with the club logo are still available.)

We will produce another run of the first MOGNW club badge (the "boat anchor") in copper-colored metal in a quantity based on pre-paid sales. The badge will be marked "1997, will have a thinner tang for easier mounting, and will be cast from a cleaned-up mold. Those of you who want a boat anchor should call or write us. We will put an order form with price in a future Magazine.

Samples of engraved beer glasses and coffee mugs may be seen at the VanDusen All-Brit. The Bavarian beer stein is 10 inches tall, holds 20 ounces, and sells for $10.00. The coffee mug sells for $8.00. Both are engraved with the MCGNW logo. We will take orders at VanDusen or you may purchase them on a first-come first-served basis at the Bellevue Field Meet. Two more styles will be available for purchase at Portland.
