“Ek wil net hê my man en seun moet 'n goeie Kersfees hê,” sê sy.

Job creation exceeds 650 at Platreef MOKOPANE – Ivanhoe Mines executive chairman, Rob-ert Friedland and CEO Lars-Eric Johansson announced that the total workforce at the Platreef Project outside Mokopane now exceeds 650 men and women.

More than 500 of the jobs, representing 78% of the total workforce, are held by residents of the local Moko-pane area.

Normal operations have been successfully re-estab-lished at the site of the company’s planned underground mine on the Platreef resource of platinum, palladium, nickel, copper, gold and rhodium following the formal activation of the company’s long-term mining right by the Department of Mineral Resources on November 4. Plant, earthmoving and mining equipment were returned to the site last week after a six-month suspension of activity. The principal priority at the mine site is the completion of the excavation at the box cut to establish access for the construction of the large concrete surface collar for Shaft #1, which will be the initial production shaft in the first phase of Platreef’s development. The collar also will serve as a base that will anchor the headframe structure and house the ventilation opening.

Work on the shaft and related mining-plant compo-nents is being conducted within the 20-hectare, fenced

construction compound that has been designed to enhance worksite safety, to minimize visual impacts on residential areas and to contribute to the effectiveness of environmental manage-ment programs.

Upgrading work on the stage and hoist winders for the sink-ing phase of Shaft #1 has been completed and steel fabrication for the sinking stage and headgear has commenced. Design and engineering work is proceeding on the primary components for Shaft #2, the 10-metre-diameter main production shaft that will be capable of hoisting six million tons a year and also will be fitted with a 150-person equipment cage.

Ivanhoe expects to receive results of a pre-feasibility study (PFS) later this month that will expand on the phase-one devel-opment scenario outlined in the preliminary economic assess-ment that was released in March this year. Ivanhoe has also retained Whittle Consulting, of Melbourne, Australia, to conduct an optimization study using as a base the Platreef PFS produc-tion schedules, revenues and costs. The Whittle study’s main focus will be on increasing cash flow by enhanced mine sched-uling techniques, stope cut-off optimization and the matching of hoisting and milling capacities through the planned, sub-sequent expansion phases. The study’s recommendations are intended to provide guidance for the feasibility study, which is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2015.

The purpose of the function was to asses the buying needs of the Stokvel customers and embrace regular customers.

Four years in prison for shopliftingLEPHALALE - Zezani Manners (29) from Zimbabwe was arrested on various occasions for shoplifting in Giyani and surrounding areas. He paid a fine every time that he was arrested. The Lephalale Police arrested him again recently and when he appeared in court the judge sentenced him to four years in prison because he did not learn from the previous arrests and keeps on committing the same crime.

Raped after declining giftsMARAPONG - A 19-year-old Botswana girl was allegedly raped in Marapong after she declined an offer from a ‘friend’ to buy her a cell phone as well as clothes for her child on Monday.

When she asked him to leave, he alleg-edly overpowered her, covered her mouth and forcibly undressed her before raping her. Afterwards he simply left her at the scene of the crime and drove off.

Lephalale Police is providing accommo-dation to the victim while the case is being investigated.

LEPHALALE - Police arrested a 34-year-old Mozambican man on charges of copper theft on Saturday.

He was caught with PVC-coated Telkom telephone cables to the value of R230 000 in his possession. Police are looking for another man in connection with this crime. He was last seen on Saturday driving a white Toyota Tazz with the registration no CH 53 YN GP.

Anyone with information must please call Warrant Officer Frans Mokoena on 073 429 8959.

‘Mob justice’ in MarapongMARAPONG - A man was assaulted by a group of community members of Tlou Street in Marapong last Saturday.

According to Police spokesperson, War-rant Officer Frans Mokoena, the community accused the victim of stealing their valuables at night.

The victim was seriously injured and had to be taken to the Ellisras District Hospital where his injuries were treated.

No charges were laid by the community or the victim and no arrests had been made.

MOKOPANE -Being promoted to the rank of Brigadier, Mokopane station commander, Col. Lucas Mogwaneng will probably be re-membered for failing to implement several High Court orders to remove illegal ANC occupiers of the Mogalakwena municipality rather than his successes in the battle against drug dealing and abuse in Mokopane.

With many ‘drug lords’ apprehended under his watch still serv-ing sentences, Mogwaneng feels he has dealt with the town’s crime problem ‘decisively’. He, however concedes that the Mogalakwena Municipality and a possible taxi feud remain outstanding problems.

Mogwaneng was promoted to the rank of Brigadier on 1 Decem-ber and will be taking command of Giyani police station.

STEENBOKPAN – Last Saturday, Sasol Mining handed over the Lesedi Tshukudu Thusong Centre in Steenbokpan to the Lep-halale Municipality.

The building of the centre emanates from Sasol’s commitment to invest in the area as promised last year during the sod turning event. “Sasol remains firmly rooted in this country and, as one of the largest taxpayers we play an important role in contributing to SA. Part of our investment is made in the communities in which we operate,” said Pe-ter Steenkamp, senior vice president, Sasol Mining.

A decision to build a Community Centre was made after, Sasol in consultation with the Steenbokpan community and the Lep-halale Municipality identified several com-munity needs. These needs included training and development initiatives, infrastructure projects, basic services, etc.

Sasol hands over centre in SteenbokpanThe Lephalale Municipality will own,

manage and maintain the Lesedi Tshukudu Thusong Centre. They will also determine which services will be rendered to the com-munity from the Centre.

Sasol Mining is still investigating the possibility to develop coal reserves in the Lephalale region. While much work needs to be done to develop these reserves, it would be prudent to develop the mine in phases, starting smaller and increasing production as infrastructure and markets develop. Sasol Mining’s activities in the area are dependent on being granted the mining right by the Department of Mineral Resources and a final investment decision by Sasol, once the min-ing right has been granted. The decision to develop a mine will also be dependent on water supply to support the proposed mining activities and rail infrastructure to ship the product to market.

MOKOPANE - “I will rather face contempt of court than execute the court order,” provin-cial head of legal services at the SAPS, Maj.Gen. Steven Mbhalati allegedly told Mogal-akwena Municipality’s Irene de Villiers on Tuesday.

This followed discussions on how police were going to execute a fifth court order to remove ANC members who have illegally oc-cupied the municipality for more than three weeks.

In this time no municipal services had been rendered and municipal workers have been waiting outside the municipal premises for a legal resolution to the deadlock.

The Mogalakwena Residents Associa-tion (MRA) has now threatened to take more drastic action. At a press conference last week the organisation told the media the res-idents of Mokopane may have to remove the unwanted occupiers with their own hands, seeing as the police shows no intention of upholding the order of the law.

Provincial head of legal services at the SAPS Maj.Gen Steven Mbhalati and the Mogalakwena Municipality’s Irene de Vil-liers discussed the order to remove Thlalefi Mashemaite and his colleagues for before Mbhalati indicated that he wouldn't execute the court order.

Brandvereniging roep boere

Community suffersKorny Dekker, DA ward councillor for ward 31 released the following statement: Due to the ongoing ANC fights in the Mogal-akwena Municipality, hundreds of housel-holds in Mokopane and surrounding areas are stranded without water supply. These households were all supplied with prepaid water meters and due to the closing of the municipal offices, it is not possible for them to purchase water from the municipality.

This concludes than consumers human rights have been taken away from them. The constitution of South Africa clearly states in Section 27(1)(b) “everyone has the right to have access to sufficient water”.

Dekker said in his statement that the DA will be laying charges at the Human Rights Commissioner should this water issue not be solved within seven days.

Coming across an accident while out on the road can be a frightening and stressful experience. Not only is it a

dangerous environment to get out of your vehicle but the sight of injured, bleeding people or children can induce panic in the toughest of people.

Paramedics deal with such incidents on a daily basis and are specifically trained and equipped to cope with and treat pa-tients on such scenes. But what happens if you are the first person to come across an accident?

What do you do if you actually see the accident happen in front of you? Who do you call and what do you do first while you wait for the emergency personnel to arrive?

The following segment comprises a few important principles and pieces of advice to help you to calmly, safely and carefully look after yourself, the patients and the accident scene while waiting for the emer-gency services.

What to do first Pull your vehicle over

Park in a safe position off the road.Turn on your hazard lights and head-

lights. (Any and all lighting that may help other motorists see that there has been an accident and slow down is necessary. Don’t turn your bright lights on as this may temporarily blind oncoming motorists)

If the accident is on a blind rise or bend, parking your vehicle back from the accident in a ‘fend-off’ position so vehicles see the accident scene may help prevent further accidents.

Put out your warning triangles if you have them

What to do next  Phone ER24 on 084 124  084 124 is the national number which will connect you with ER24’s Contact Centre. It is an emergency line where a call taker will request the following information:

Your telephone number (to remain in

How to handle an emergencycontact with you should you be cut off)

Your location (street name and nearest cross road).

The details of what has happened, how many people are injured, whether there is a fire, etc.

This will allow the dispatcher to send the correct personnel from the closest area. In addition the call takers are able to give you telephonic advice as to what to do to help the injured on the accident scene Assisting the Injured

If you have a First Aid kit, take it out of your vehicle. Put on the rubber gloves that are inside the first aid kit.

Calm and reassure the people that have been involved in the accident. Make them aware you have called the emergency ser-vices and that help is on the way. This may be the only thing AND the most important thing you can do to help someone involved in an accident.

The most important principles when helping an accident victim are the follow-ing:

Safety – Do not attempt heroics which may potentially jeopardise your own safety. Your safety comes first, before that of the injured. You are of no use to anyone if you become injured while attempting to help others.

If there is any fire/ flames and you have a fire extinguisher, use it and direct the foam/ water at the base of the flames.

Do NOT move the patient or attempt to remove them from the vehicle UN-LESS there is an immediate threat to life (e.g. the car is on fire and you are unable to extinguish it). There may be an underly-ing injury to the neck or spine and unnec-essary movement could make this worse.

If the person is unconscious, open the mouth and check there is nothing inside causing obstruction.

Check if the person is breathing. If the patient is breathing leave them

in the position you find them and monitor them regularly.

If the patient is NOT breathing and you have been trained to do so, you may begin

CPR and rescue breathing as necessary. If a person is bleeding heavily from a

wound, take any available material e.g. a t-shirt/ gauze from the first aid kit/ a towel/ a blanket/ etc, and place it over the open bleeding wound. Then press tightly apply-ing direct pressure to the wound. Maintain that pressure until the emergency services arrive. Do not stop pressing to check if there is continued bleeding or to look at the wound. This procedure may save a person’s life.

Being a bystander at an accident scene is invariably a stressful event. However if you remain calm, keep your head and follow the above principles, you could be instrumental in assisting, reassuring and even saving the lives of the accident vic-tims.
