Colors flashed madly throughme; attacking me, forcing theirway into my self. My mind wasexpanding; I could see the circlesof blazing suns radiating multi-colored lights in every direction; acacophony of a million colorswarping their way around me. Icould see twelve dimensionalplanes shooting towards me,through me, around me: probing, groping, grasping, holding me inthe delicate fingers of light. My brain seemed to disappear, and in its place a white dwarf starnovad, sending dense particlesof itself through my mind; rippingmy sensitivities apart.

I tried to see ahead of me, but Icould not; a dense ebony thick-ness seemed to crop the universearound me, holding me in.

I tried to feel, but I could not;my hands touched the tenuousvacuum of space, grasping an in-finity of emptyness.

I tried to scream, but I couldnot; my lips parted and the screamthat was uttered was hollow, life-less, like the ranting of a dyingbanshee.

I tried to breathe, but I couldnot; for I WAS DEAD.Not dead in the physical sense.

    I was a non-man, with non-thought, non-touch, non-feeling.I was non-existant.

I was trapped in a kaleidoscopeof endless colors. My sense oftime vanished. At once I was here, lost in oblivion. And then I wasback in the tomb that began it all.

Dr. Vetry turned to me, smiledenigmatically, and went on withhis remarks. "And so now that weare here at last, here in the lostvalley in Egypt, so far beyond whatwe call civilization, I want to tellyou more of what we expect tofind."

I leaned on my pick, watchedhim. Beside us loomed the strangefeatureless brick wall of the LostPyramid, soaring up vast and time-yellowed against the grey rockywalls of that hidden valley. Ourtents stood alone and forlorn inthe sandy wastes that filled thevalley's basin. For miles, in alldirections, we were aloneour

guides far away, just the three ofus here. There was the fanaticaltime-lined face of the Egyptolo-gist; a man who had spent anunknown amount of time in thecurse-laden pastime of robbingthe tombs of ancient pharaohs,of despoiling the buried templesof forgotten demon-gods.There was his daughter, Vera, young, lovely; her face still spark-ling with the zest of youth on itsfirst adventure. Finally, there wasmyself, young enough to apprec-iate the novelty of this strangework, honored by my role of as-sistant to the great archeologist.

"I have told you how I found theparchment which told of -thewhereabouts of this Lost Pyra-mid. It was clutched in the wither-ed hands of a sacrificed priest ofAnubis. I have told you that it gavespecific instructions for findingthis unmapped valley and its mostsecret of tombs. What I did not tellyou was that it spoke of the natureof this pyramid's great secret.Anubis, you know, was the mys-tery god of Ancient Egypt, the godof its Hell. This tomb was his mostguarded mysteryfor it containsthe terrible secret of Eternal Life.In this parchment, it is termed the'Life-in-Death'."

I stared up at the pyramid beforewhich we toiled. It had been fea-tureless when we had found it,with only the piled dust of agesobscuring its base. Now we hadfound the stone door which hadbeen hidden beneath that dust.We had pried it open, and in thesmall stone antechamber beyond,we had found only the usual trap-pings of the ancientscarved fun-eral masks, crumbling clay, claystatues of the monster-headedgods of the Elder Dynasties, thegrey mummies of sacred catsand another inner door set at theend of a dark, bare passage lead-ing into the very heart of the pry-ramid.

Dr. Vetry clutched my hand withthe grip of one obsessed. "I havereason to believe that within thistomb tyre is sleeping a man whois not dead. He was a priest ofAnubisthey called him the MadPriest. He dared to challenge his

IbyArt^tamplerhorrible god's dominion over theRegion of the Deadand as aresult he was condemnedtoEternal Life! He lies somewherebeyond that door, waiting to riseand walk again at the call of pul-sing blood!"That very morning we had plant-

ed a small explosive charge in thecorner of that innermost door. Not too much, but just enough tobreak the aged seals that held ittight. Now, Dr. Vetrytook the switchthat attached to the detonationwire, glanced once again at theconnections, and placed it inVera's hand. "You must be theone to press it," he said. "Not thatit would matter, perhaps, but theparchment said that the doormust be opened by a woman. Afterall, it is a small thing for us to doto oblige the ancients."Vera took the switch, her eyes

alight but troubled. I had to say,"Surely you cannot really believethat wild story? You cannot real-ly think that a man can be keptalive, in a state of drugged sleep, for oever five thousand years?"

Dr. Vetry smiled his weird smile."Who knows? Though I supposewe shall only find another mummyyet, it may be a curious secret."

Slow, plainfully halting. The doc-tor's face went pale. Vera stared, started slowly forward as if hyp-notized by the eerie sounds. Iraised my pick, fearfully held it asif waiting. Then, from the mouth of the

ancient Lost Pyramid, throughthe grey dust swirls, came a fig-ure. It emerged into the harshNorth African sun, walking slow-ly, creakily, towards Vera.

It was a man, a mummy. Itsbody, which had been wrappedin a browning funeral shroud, instrips of incense-soaked linensuch as was used to wrap thedead,, was showing itself as thetime-rotted cloth shredded away.A greyish, dead flesh, a bodywhich had been slowly drying fora hundred generations, was nowappearing. The head was no skel-eton, but that of a man, of a manwho had laid entrapped beyondthe beginning of time. Flesh, bareflesh; against sharp bone. His eyes

shone green and hungry. His yel-lowing cracked teeth were bared, and his bone-thin hands were rais-ed before him, raised to clutch atthe life that had been so long de-nied him.

I screamed. The mummy mov-ed on towards her. Dr. Vetry felldown on his knees, yelling: "Themummy lives! The power of Anu-bis still rules!" >'But I recovered my senses. I

snatched my pick up, dashedforward, and swung the heavy im-plement.The mummy turned, threw upits hands at me. I smelt a smell ofincenses and of the dust that hadonce tickled the nostrils of a for-gotten Pharaoh. I stared into thehaunted and hell-lit eyes of a manwho should have been dead fivethousand years and had refusedto die. And my heavy iron pick fellsquare upon the ancient skull.

Dr. Vetry screamed, "No!" Butit was too late. There was a sickening crunch,a moment of dreadful suspension, when the mummy opened hismouth and screamed a screamthat reeked of the agoniest of ahundred unspeakable tortures. Itfell, and the skull split wide, atmy feet.

I looked at the broken ruins thatlay scattered on the floor of thepyramid, and I strained to see thecracked bones that should havebeen there, but in its place I sawthe broken remnants of microcir-cuits, the torn remains of minis-cule wirings, and the shatteredpieces of small bulbs. I stared inamazement as Vera leaned overtowards the fractured skull andlifted it gently in her warm hands. She examined each piece care-fully, lifting them to the sliver-thinlight that shafted through the smallinlets in the pyramid's crust. Shelooked at the skull and the tinypieces that fragmented from it,and then turned towards her fa-ther. "There is still a possibility,Father. The man circuitry is intact.Only a few of the micro-circuitshave to be replaced."

Dr. Vetry looked at me, and myblood chilled. "No thanks to you, fool. Years of searching mighthave been in vain if you had de-stroyed Anubis.""What are you talking about? What's going on here?" I tried toget an answer, but they ignoredme as if I were so much sewage38

waste. I lunged forward and grab-bed the Doctor's collar. He easilybrushed me aside which surprisedme greatly, considering he musthave been at least sixty years old.I got up again and moved tow-ards him, but this time he liftedme up with one hand and threwme to the opposite corner of thepyramid. I lay stunned in thecorner, and he turned from meand continued with his work.He checked the circuits of themummy, or perhaps it should bet-ter be called a robot, and when hewas satisfied that all was in work-ing order, he reached towards hisown face, AND RIPPED IT OFF.For a moment there was a sense

of revoltion, but then I realized itwas not his face at all, but a maskthat had come off. For under hisskin-tight mask was the purpleface of an alien being.A wave of nausea hit me as Istared at it. There were two eyes, but they bugged inwards like twohollow sockets. And protrudingfrom the center of the eyes weretwo tendril-like shapes that seem-ed to flap in the wind. The ends ofthe tendrils seemed to have tinyfeelers, that sensed what was infront of them rather than physical-ly seeing the forms. The creaturethat had been Dr. Vetry stood be-fore me, and all I could do wasjust stare. It had no nose, thoughits face was covered with threerows of slits on each side, slitsthat could easily have passed forgills. The mouth extended fromthe face like a puppet's, and, tinybits of purple flesh hung over it sothe mouth could not open all theway. The thing stared at me. Its lipsseemed to cuil into a hideoussmile. "Surprised, my youngfriend? You should be. How couldyou possibly expect that I wasnot a human like yourself, but anextra-terrestial. Yes, I am surethat you have many questions, thus before you ask them, let metell you my story.

"I am Wheete Frippe of theplanet Frelm V. The planet was oneof six prison worlds within theOmega system. Those who weresentenced to one of the prisonworlds, were placed in suspendedanimation for the rest of eternity."We of Frelm once had a lifespan that would encompass many

thousands of your Earthian Years, but the science council decided to

end our virtual immortality . . .the immortality that had made usso great. I fought back, and be-cause I opposed the law makers,I was declared a traitor, and sentto Frelm V. But before I could beplaced under suspended anima-tion, I stole one of the teleportdevices, and destroyed all theothers. Using the device, I camehere to your planet to begin mysearch. You see, here, deep with-in this pyramid, lies the secret ofimmortality. It was placed heremany thouands of years beforeby a culture far more advancedthan either of our planets. Wherethey came from, and why theypicked your planet to leave thesecret the eternal life, I don't know. But it was here. Twenty years agoI began my search, and now, fin-ally, it is over. And that mummyyou call Anubis, is it. I must takethe secret of immortality, andthen go back to Frelm and destroythe council that robbed me of life."And as for you, my youngfriend. You have served your pur-pose, thus . . ."

I didn't let him finish, for I knewwhat he was going to say. I hadserved my purpose, thus I couldbe disposed of. I lunged at a pick-ax and took it up. But before Icould swing it at him, he lifted hisfinger towards me and a ray blastshot out. I ducked just in time toavoid being hit, but the wall ofthe pyramid directly behind whereI stood was now gone, and a hugegaping hole stood in its place.

"Stop, don't try to fight me,"Vetry-Frippe screamed. I knewbetter than to listen to him, but Ialso knew that I could not dodgethe blasts from his finger forever.I grabbed Vera and forced herbefore me. I knew Frippe wouldn'tshoot less he hit his own daughter. But he merely smiled and said,"Vera, phase out, mid-time."Vera began to glow and I found

myself being spun around in acacoon of lights and shapes. Iwas being pulled in every direc-tion at once. .And then there was darkness. The universe itself became a pitchblack. There was nothing thatcould be seen anywhere. And then suddenly there waslight, and I could feel a form ap-pear below me. I realized I wasagain on solid ground, but not theground of the planet Earth. I look-ed about me and saw a craggy

landscape; thick hor-shaped rocks jutted outthe planet's surface, reach-high into the sky, tipping thecolored air in a weird phos-A burst of flame appeared onhorizon, and soon it was fol-by a silver ship wingingway towards me. Thsshipdescended to the groundthe door opened. Several be-who resembled Wheet Frippe

I told him my name was Frad-and that I was from the planetItwasratherfunny, I thoughtmyself. If someone told me thatthis would be happening to me,would have thought I'd be inBut I was almost perfectlyas I spoke to the alien com-many hundreds of lightaway from my home world. The commander thought for a-and then he said, "So Frippegone to Earth to seek immor-The fool, doesn't he knowwe decided to rid ourselvesthe curse of immortality?"

I couldn't understand what hetalking about. How could im-be a curse?

"Don't be so naive, Earthling.there is immortality, prog-ends. People become con-and refuse to advance them-The council finally decidedlimit our life span, so that wemove to the next evolution-step. But Frippe was the sole

to the idea. And now hegone to Earth to seek the se-of immortality. But he must

stopped, at all costs."talked for awhile and he toldthe man I knew as Dr. Vetrygone mad, and killed the pres-of the Council. It was onlythat he was sentenced toV, the prison world. They

told me that without any ofteleport stations, they couldtravel to Earth to stop Frppe, that I could be sent back by

reversing the teleportthat were already within

But first they would prepareso that I may fight and defeatmad Frippe.

I was led to a large chamber andplaced into a small room. A ma-chine was rolled out and aimeddirectly at me. I could hear thehum of the engines as it began. Athin ray shot out and entered mybody. I could feel the sound ofthe ultrasonics course its waythrough me. And then there wasunconsciousness. When I woke I was on a bedwithin the laboratory. The Com-mander stood before me and saidthat from this point on, my bodywould absorb the power of Frippeand when enough power was mine,I could send it back to Frippeand destroy him.

I was too dazed to say any-thing, so I mutely followed thescientist to another room whereI would be drained of the teleportbeam and be sent back to Earth. There was a flash of black, andsuddenly I found myself in the py-ramid that began it all.

I heard voices coming from an-other chamber, so I quietly mademy way in time to see Frippe aboutto activate the robot/mummy, A-nubis. I was about to move inwhen I felt a warm hand touch myneck. I turned around and it wasVera, beautiful Vera, lovely Vera,Vera the slimy alien. I pushed heraway, but she still came towardsme. She stared at me with heremerald eyes, and I began to fallunder her spell. I knew that anysecond I would be her pawn, so Iforced myself to turn away. Sheleaped on top of me, but I pushedher over to the floor. I forced myknee on her chest to keep herfrom rising, but I couldn't bringmyself to kill her. For even thoughI knew that she was just wearinga mask, the disguise was' so beau-tiful that I hesitated to attack.Frippe heard the commotion, andcame out from the chamber. Helooked at me and began shouting,"You fool, you could ruin every-thing. You have to stop."

I refused to listen and leaped athim. He raised his hand and a raybolt shot out towards me. I triedto dodge it, but it was too late. Ithit me squarely in the chest. I ex-pected to fall down dead the nextmoment, but the blast didn't evenfaze me. I then remembered whatI was told on Frelm; that every-time Frippe would attack me, Iwould merely absorb his powerHe grabbed me and began fight-ing, but I felt nothing. With each

blow, I became stronger and morepowerful, until finally I was ableto attack him. I lifted my handstowards him, and let all the pentup energy shoot out. It hit himwith a heavy thud, he spun aroundquickly, and disintegrated in apuff of smoke.

I turned towards Vera and start-ed after her. She began scream-ing. "Idiot, you've doomed an en-tire world to death. It's all over."

I was puzzled. What was shetalking about?

"Frippe was no criminal," shebegan. "He was the only sanemember of the council. They haddecided to take over all the worldsof the Omega Star System, andthe way they were going to do itwas rob the life of all their sub-jects and only they would remainimmortal . . . only they wouldnever die. They would be able tolord this over the people, andwould take over all of Omega, and then, the universe. Frippe wasthe only one capable of restoringimmortality to the people, to letthem determine their own futureswithout the interference of anydictatorial body. But now you havedestroyed him, and the hopes ofthe universe."She reached towards her rightbreast and pressed something. She then blew up and machineryscattered in every direction.

I felt a wave of nausea overcomeme, and then I realized what hadhappened. Vera was not Frippe'sdaughter at all, but she was theteleport machine placed withinthe mind and soul of a woman. When Frippe was killed, she de-stroyed herself.I also realized one other thing.Frippe was the only being thatcould have helped save the uni-verse, but now, because of me,

it was doomed.I am writing this all down now

in hopes that someone may findthis script and can do some-thing to help my planet save it-self from a domination that mustsurely come.As for me, I can not live with thethoughts that it was I who de-stroyed the hopes of every humanbeing. There is only one alterna-tive, and that is suicide. The poison is acting quicklynow, and in a matter of moments,I will be dead. As for the world,I can only wish that someonecan save it. Farewell. _
