If it is Spring, then is must be time to clean up the garden and get ready for planting. And invariably, once you go out and buy that new rake or shovel, you will find in the garage that you already had one! Wasted time, wasted money. You can do better!
So, instead of going out and buying that new rake, start by calling the Chamber with your business needs! Trying to find a new business partner? Well, you could go to the web, or you could go to the SPACC directory full of a variety of member businesses! Easy to use and in one or two clicks you’ll have a list of accounting firms, marketing companies, janitorial vendors, etc. Why not start your business searches at the Chamber and let a fellow member earn your business?
The same holds true when it comes to dealing with the city, state, or even the Federal government. You can start by handling things on your own or you
could call the Chamber! The public affairs team at the Chamber has the experience and training to work on your behalf, minimizing the time you might spend searching elsewhere.
Finally, struggling with social media? Maybe you're looking for a way to provide your employees with a social and professional outlet? Or looking for someone who can help in doing business in Germany? Well, look no further! Your Chamber hosts over 100 events a year. There is always something there for you, all you need to do is look. Keep an eye on our events page and I promise you, you will find a resource you can take advantage of.
The choice is yours - you can have six rakes sitting in the garage, hidden from each other, or you can call your Chamber and maximize your investment. Happy Spring!

New certification program validates job applicants’ basic computer skills
If job applicants show you a certificate from the Northstar Digital Literacy Project, then you can be confident that they have mastered certain basic computer skills. The Northstar Certificate – a “show what you know” assessment - is the last step in an effort to teach basic computer skills and offer a credential to help in job searching.
Using a computer at work and for other tasks is increasingly a part of everyday life. But not everyone has had the opportunity to learn the basics of computer use. That puts adults with low literacy levels and displaced workers without computer skills at a disadvantage, especially when it comes to as finding a job. Basic computer skills are a prerequisite of employment for even most entry-level jobs.
To address this, the Saint Paul Public Library and the Saint Paul Community Literacy Consortium led an innovative community initiative called the Northstar Digital Literacy Project, launched in the fall of 2012.
The Northstar Digital Literacy Project offers free on-line skill assessments in six modules: basic computer use, Internet, Windows®
7, Mac OS X®, and using e-mail and Microsoft Word®. Each assessment tests 16-20 specific skills adults need to know and master to become computer literate. At the end of each assessment, the user receives a page of results, which lists the skills that have been mastered and the areas that need improvement.
By Kit Hadley, Director, Saint Paul Public Library
Computer classes are offered in many community locations across the city. Individuals can attend one-to-one training or open computer labs to learn and practice computer skills.

People interested in earning a Certificate of Completion must take the assessment at an approved sponsoring agency and answer 85% or more correctly. Find the list of agencies here. This list is also a helpful guide to organizations offering computer training.
The Northstar Project has helped to create consistency, improve quality and strengthen the network of community organizations in the Twin Cities offering basic computer skills training. Classes offered by sponsoring organizations are now aligned to the same standards, which helps learners who often seek training at more than one organization.
Many organizations are using the assessments as pre- or –post-tests for computer classes as a way to test the effectiveness of instruction. Sponsoring sites are able to access data on how learners at their site perform, which provides feedback that contributes to improving program quality.
The Northstar Project is a voluntary initiative among organizations offering basic computer training. A group of practitioners developed the standards for each of the six modules. The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Otto Bremer Foundation provided one-time funding to develop the on-line assessments. Sponsoring organizations pay a small, annual fee to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the project.
Use of the Northstar assessments has been growing steadily since the launch of the Project in fall 2012. Over 31,000 people have taken an assessment on the public website and 5450, through a sponsoring agency. Fifty-one organizations in 13 cities now offer the Certificate of Completion, including libraries, community organizations, technology centers, schools, and job training centers. In recent weeks, two agencies – in Chicago, Illinois and San Jose, California – have become the first non-Minnesota sites to offer a Northstar Certificate.
The Northstar Digital Literacy Project is an example of a voluntary, innovative initiative to address an important community need. It improves workforce skills, and helps job seekers, employers and community organizations alike. More about the project is available at www.digitalliteracyassessment.org

In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.
This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.
Sponsored by:
At the Chamber’s March Membership Meeting, Joel Tilsner accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of Tilsner Carton Company. In 1918 Isadore Tilsner began collecting used boxes for resale. He collected the boxes from liquor stores throughout St. Paul. The demand for used boxes was just enough for Isadore to make a modest living. This was the beginning of Tilsner Carton Company. Tilsner soon expanded from merely selling used and misprint boxes to manufacturing and offering a line of stock cartons to end users. Emphasizing a commitment to our region, Tilsner Carton has had four locations in St. Paul where it continues to operate. And today, the company celebrates 95 years of business.
