President’s Perspective …

Hello all. Due to my work and personal family schedules I have been able to get out to go fly only a few times this spring. I did manage to burn off a full tank of gas doing crosswind and pattern work at Hartford one day. I feel that “back in the saddle” feeling after proving that I can successfully maneuver the Quicksilver back to the ground (in condition to be used again) in gusting crosswinds and mechanical turbulence from the hangers at my home airport. I hope you too have been able to get out and airborne to shake the dust off by now. We have a busy event-filled summer approaching so I hope to see many of you out and about at some of them. There are a lot of resources other than our website Google calendar to monitor for event information. Social Flight, EAA’s Chapter Calendar, and many other EAA and flight schools are advertising local events and activities that may spark your interest. Take some time to search the world wide web for events in your neighborhood. Feel free to share them with our Chapter members through the Chapter 1 Yahoo Groups site (info on where to find that site can be found on the home page of our Chapter 1 website). Our next meeting (Saturday, May 9th) is scheduled to be held at the Racine Batten Airport, Racine WI. We will meet in the Racine Sport Flyers hanger. A map and airport information can be found on our website Events tab under Our Next Meeting. Access to the airport will be off of Golf Road. You’ll hit the buzzer at the gate and be let in by Chapter members at the Sport Flyers hanger. The hanger is through the gate to the right on the access road. Corey will have a sign out directing those attending. Please see additional information on directions and maps posted in this newsletter. We may be a little short on chairs, so you may want to bring a lawn chair. After our meeting we will be grilling brats and burgers at the hangar. Feel free to bring a side dish if you like. We hope you can join us. Chapter 1 will be scheduling a 2nd EAA AirVenture 2015 work day to clean and repaint the upper red barn floor. As soon as I get in contact with EAA’s head of maintenance, Steve Taylor, I’ll finalize a plan for access and materials and set a date. To enable us to get this done in one day I will need

several volunteers willing to meet early on a Saturday morning in Oshkosh, clear the space, mop the floors and paint. Your volunteer hours will earn you a free day pass to an AirVenture 2015 day of your choosing. Please stay tuned for an update on scheduling. I should have that worked out by our May meeting date. I spoke with Steve Krog with Cub Air this past Sunday about the scheduling for Cub Air’s BRAT FRY IN this spring. He stated that his schedule should be posted within the next week or so. We chatted about the possibility of our EAA Chapter helping to co-sponsor this Hartford Airport cookout / spot-landing event. We will continue planning for our membership participation after I see the date for this event. Please stay tuned for more info. If you are a fan of Ultralights and Facebook you might want to check out “Those Magnificent Young Men In Their Flying Machines” Facebook site. They are mainly dedicated to the fun of flying the light stuff and have a following from around the world. There are almost 1000 members and growing in popularity. I find the site entertaining and informative. You may benefit from joining as well. We have some great weather coming for ultralight flying. Let’s keep up the communication and plan to get together for some fun flying some time soon. You can use our Yahoo Groups site to post what you’re up to and when. If you’d like some company in the air let us know by sharing when you plan to get up there and from where. Keep the shiny side UP! Steve M.

VALDEZ STOL (SHORT TAKEOFF/LANDING) AIRCRAFT COMING BACK TO OSHKOSH FOR EAA AIRVENTURE 2015

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — The specially modified short takeoff/landing (STOL) aircraft that were a hit at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014 are returning for more fun this year, as they re-create one of the world’s most unique aviation competitions. The “Valdez STOL” airplanes will be part of the 63rd annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) fly-in convention is July 20-26 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Those aircraft compete at the annual Valdez, Alaska, fly-in and air show in May each year, and demonstrated the unique capabilities of the airplanes and pilots at Oshkosh in 2014. This year, more than a dozen of these aircraft, including homebuilt and specially modified production airplanes, will be participating on July 20-24. They are based on aircraft that provide supplies to the rugged and far-flung outposts throughout Alaska. The demanding terrain in that state requires that aircraft take off and land on rough runways often less than 500 feet long.

The Valdez STOL activities will include flying during the afternoon air show and on selected evenings at AirVenture’s grass airstrip for ultralights on the south end of the grounds. These flying activities are made possible with support from CubCrafters, one of the nation’s leading backcountry aircraft manufacturers.

“We knew that last year’s Valdez flying competitions and demonstrations would be popular, but we had little idea how much fun it would be for both participants and those who watched them,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs. “The pilots drew cheers during the afternoon air show demonstrations and thousands of aviation enthusiasts crowded around the ultralight runway for the informal post-air show evening festivities with the airplanes. This is true grassroots flying, perfect for Oshkosh.” While the airplanes and pilots involved are commonly from Alaska, aviators and aircraft from throughout North

America are expected to participate once again this year. Last year, it was common to see these aircraft take off and

land in less than 50 feet. There will be flight competitions during the afternoon air shows on July 20-21, competition

finals prior to the July 22 night air show, and fun flying at the ultralight airstrip on July 23 (mid-day) and July 24

(evening).

Ultralights are encouraged to attend the May meeting at Racine airport this month as well as any other time. One thing to remember is that all aircraft are required to have a radio and use it. There are a wide variety of aircraft from jets to homebuilts operating there. Communications Frequency is 123.075. Another thing to remember is the proximity to the outer ring of Milwaukee’s Class C airspace. Remain below 2,200’ MSL to stay underneath their outer shelf and approach the airport directly from the West over I-94 and you will have several miles of clearance between you and the nearest controlled airspace. Al’s hangar is located on the South Ramp near the approach end of runway 04. There are two large brown hangars on the South ramp. We will be meeting in the Eastern one.

If coming by car: follow

I-94 South into Racine

County.

Exit at Hwy K and

turn left (East).

Continue East on

Hwy K which will

become Hwy 38 South.

Stay in the left lane on

Hwy 38 until you get to

Rapids Drive.

Turn left onto

Rapids drive and go

about two blocks to Golf

Ave. There is a

Marathon gas station on

the corner of Rapids Dr

and Golf Ave.

Turn left on Golf

Ave. and go to the

airport gate at the end of

the road.

There is a call box

there and we are the

upper right button. Push

the “Racine Sport

Flyers” button and we

will open the gate for

you.

Turn right and you

will see two brown

hangars on your left. We

are the second one.

There is plenty of

parking on the far side

of the hangar. Use the

grass if needed.

Saturday morning we’ll kick off the day with the annual Tom Boos Memorial Breakfast “Fly-Into”. Meet at the south hangars and we’ll depart for the restaurant promptly at 9:00 am via ground transportation. Riverfront Family Restaurant is just down the road at 1317 North High Street (next to the old K-Mart) - their phone is 920-563-5070.

Following breakfast, we’ll hold the June meeting of the Microlite Flyers back at the south hangars, around 10:30 am. A bar-b-que lunch will be served around 3:00 - bring a dish to pass if you wish. Late afternoon flying session will follow. Hopefully we’ll be able to get in some practice for the upcoming Pioneer Day Ultralight Fly-In competition (June 20) at the EAA Museum!!!

The airport is located along the western banks of the Rock

River, between Jefferson and Fort Atkinson, south of I-94. Exit at Johnson Creek, follow Hwy 26 south to the Hwy 89 exit. Turn east off the exit, then south at the curve onto Business 26. Turn east onto Airport Road, then south on Cty K to the 3

on your right. You can also take County K directly south out of Jefferson or north out of Fort, for a scenic drive along the Rock.

Follow the taxiway to the left of the first hangar and around to the middle group of hangars. Parking at the end of the

middle taxiway; camping and ultralight tie-down just east of the hangars. Watch for taxiing aircraft, helicopters, KIDS,

and low swooping jumpers landing nearby as you make your way around the hangars.

Fort Atkinson Municipal Airport (61C) is listed in the Wisconsin Airport Directory and Pilot’s Guide. Runway 03/21 is 3800’ long hard surface. There are grassy areas north and east of the main runway suitable for ultralight operations.
