Bio: Devin Abellon, P.E. is the Business Development Manager for Engi-
neering Services at Uponor North America. He has 25 years of ex-
perience in the HVAC and plumbing industries with a focus on high
-performance and sustainable building design and construction.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of California at Santa Barbara and is a regis-
tered professional engineer in California and Arizona. He is an ac-
tive member of both ASPE and ASHRAE, and serves as the ASHRAE
Region X Nominating Member, Programs Subcommittee Chair for
ASHRAE TC 6.5 and as an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. He is also
a member of ASHRAE’s Conferences and Expositions Committee.
The integrity of the HVAC industry is dependent on sound technical
design, reliable products, skilled construction practice and con-
sistent maintenance and operation. But another critical element
that is sometimes overlooked is professional ethics. As members
within the HVAC industry engineers, contractors, architects, manu-
facturers, vendors and building owners are expected to exhibit the
highest standard of honesty and integrity to safeguard the confi-
dence that the public has in us. In this very competitive climate,
however, it is sometimes tempting to "bend the rules" to some de-
gree in order to gain an advantage over competition or to simply
get the job done on time. But how much is too much? Is there a
clearly defined line between ethical practice and "just the way
things are done?"
“The (un)Ethical Engineer” is an interactive, multimedia, dramatic
presentation that explores these issues through the eyes of a well-
intentioned engineer.

Hello again, All!
Last month, we talked about how many of the different
services and resources that ASHRAE has to offer. This
month, I want to take a moment to talk about one of the
ways we make those resources possible, and recognize all
of our members who have contributed to the cause. This
month, we’re talking about ASHRAE Research.
As we already mentioned last month, ASHRAE delivers a lot of value -
not just to its membership, but to the HVAC industry as a whole.
ASHRAE has been instrumental in creating the standards that are the
foundation of any HVAC design, and they also provide standardized
testing procedures - allowing manufacturers to compete on a level
playing field. In addition to standards, ASHRAE also publishes the
preeminent reference manuals for our industry - the ASHRAE Hand-
books.
These reference standards and guidebooks aren’t easy, or inexpen-
sive to compile. Each page, paragraph, and sentence has been
scrutinized, and is backed up by careful research in universities and
laboratories worldwide.

Primarily, the labor of love required to compile these resources is tackled
each day by volunteer members of our society - experts in their field from
around the globe. University and laboratory testing is funded in large part
by ASHRAE’s Research Promotion. This research promotion function of
ASHRAE is funded by donations from individual members, and goes to-
wards research into safer, cleaner, more comfortable, and more sustaina-
ble technologies across all aspects of the built environment.
ASHRAE research is funded by donations from members like you. Many of our
members have already chosen to donate, and have been recognized at the
last chapter meeting. If you are willing, I would urge you to consider donating
to ASHRAE research as well, and add your name to that list.
It’s the season of giving! If you would like more information about ASHRAE,
ASHRAE research funding, or how to give, please reach out to either myself, or
our Chapter’s Research Promotion Chairperson and past President - Saul Mar-
tinez. ([email protected])
Sincerely,
Allen Grammer, P.E., President

STATE OF THE CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT:
OFFICER AND CHAIR REPORTS
// THE 2019 - 2020 ASHRAE CHAPTER YEAR
A full slate of events and technical topics are planned for this year so
there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with other ASHRAE mem-
bers, earn PDHs and learn something new. It’s hard to believe that we’re
almost halfway through the ASHRAE year!
Below you’ll find the monthly reports from chapter officers and chairs.
// RESEARCH PROMOTION - Saul Martinez
We had our Donor Recognition Luncheon last month and handed out
coins, plaques, and shadowboxes. We also had all the donors who were
present come up to the front and be recognized and took a photo. The
Fort Worth Chapter also made Full Circle Plus for the generous donations
of chapter officers and the BOG!
// REFRIGERATION - Dan Torres
We hosted a great refrigeration tour at Panther Island Brewing on Septem-
ber 25th, thanks to everyone that came out! I will be coordinating with
Van Cashen soon to see about standardization of the spring clay shoot.
// CTTC CHAIR - Sonalie Johnson
We had a great November meeting thanks to ASHRAE Distinguished Lec-
turer, Jim Vallort. We hosted our first morning technical session of the year
and had a great turnout for both meetings.
This month we’re excited to host a joint meeting with the Dallas ASHRAE
chapter at Great Wolf Lodge. We have coordinated with ASHRAE Distin-
guished Lecturer, Devin Abellon, to present about The (Un)Ethical Engi-
neer. This meeting will be holiday themed. Everyone dust off your best ug-
ly Christmas sweater! Look forward to seeing you all there.

The GAC committee met last month and we’re working our way through
creating a city official contact list.
// SPECIAL EVENTS - Sean Rath
Stay tuned for details on some upcoming events:
• January or February 2020 - Poker Tournament / Smash Brother’s
Tournament
• March or April 2020 – Spring Golf Tournament

// CHAPTER COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR - Connie Staudt
The new StarChapter website is going well and we are learning something
new each month to utilize tricks and tools. Have been posting regularly
on Facebook.
The current goal is to have more and more monthly luncheon attendees
sign up in advance of meetings on the website as a member (instead of a
guest). Will add a blurb to our monthly e-newsletter regarding how to eas-
ily set up a login on our website to sign up for upcoming events.
// CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP PROMOTION - Patty Parrish
Here are the latest new chapter recruits:
• Wade Alleman
• Karan Shah
• Miss Jack l Ernest
• Dean Henry Fleitman

OFFICER AND CHAIR REPORTS // YEA CO-CHAIRS - Jacob Cantu & Whitney Lampe
Come see us at The Ranch at Las Colinas after the 12/11 joint lunch with
Dallas Chapter! See details on page 3. We are also actively looking for
sponsors to support our upcoming events.
// STUDENT ACTIVITIES (K-12 AND HIGHER ED) - Ian Bost
Higher Ed
On Monday December the 9th we will be holding our first TCU student
chapter meeting at TCU. At that time we will likely issue a $1,000 scholar-
ship. Meeting topic is still to be determined, but I’m thinking of something
along the lines of what is consulting engineering and what role does
ASHRAE play in it. The chapter will be providing lunch and I would like to
get at least 5 new student chapter members.
K-12
• We are gathering teacher contacts to assist them in providing present-
ers on their Career Days.
• Looking to develop a presentation for Career Days.
• Gather list of ASHRAE Members to present at Career Days.
• Looking at coordinating a joint effort with Texas Society of Professional
Engineers for PE Week.

• We are struggling this month with PAOE point submission, so need to
step up our effort, specifically RP, GAC, and Historian. Allen still needs
to know what chairs are getting points, so he needs all chairs to reach
out to him to fill out PAOE points completed.
• Presidents messages planned for the rest of the year. In January, will
talk about leadership to start setting up new people in leadership for
next year. February, we will start talking about CRC.
