GRIP leadership Next Monday, 10th February, our Year Six students will attend a Leadership day called GRIP leadership. Year Six students will find a permission form attached to this newsletter, which must be returned by the end of the week. While Miss Ruddick, Mrs Riley and the Year Sixes are at the Rockhampton Leagues Club, Mrs V will be teaching the Yr 5 class.

Learning Club Our first learning club will begin next Tuesday, 11th February. Learning Club is an afternoon of fun and learning that Depot Hill School provides in conjunction with The Smith Family. This term Ms Meryl will be working on Optiminds problems, Mrs Jacobson will be working with robotics, Miss Black will be offering Geography activities and we are looking for some volunteers to work on the garden. Parents are welcome to come along and take part in the fun. Permission forms were attached to last week’s newsletter but see the office for another one if you have mislaid yours.

Inter school soccer Friday, 14th February, is our first inter-school soccer game. We will have one team of Yr 5/6 students who will play games against students from other schools in the region. The game times and the name of the school we will attend will be released each week in the newsletter. All Yr 5/6 students are in the team and will need to return the attached permission form by the end of the week. Miss Ruddick and Mrs Jacobson are the coaches but we are still hoping to find a parent who would like to be the manager. This would entail attending the Friday afternoon games and organising to wash the socks.

Once again, thankyou to all parents for your support in getting the students back to school ready to learn. My door is always open if you have any concerns or would like to give feedback. I hope you have a wonderful week Have a great week.

YEAR 1/2 CLASS

Hello families, Many thanks to everyone for a wonderful first week back! I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday afternoon at the parent information session to discuss the year ahead. In the last week we have invested a lot of time into building our classroom culture, values and routines. We also completed a lot of assessments designed to ascertain where students are up to in their learning and made a start on our units. English This term we are looking at poetry. The poetry unit is a valuable one because students learn about rhyme, rhythm, syllables and how we can manipulate language. There is a comprehension component as well which enhances each student’s ability to answer literal, inferred and open-ended questions. In the last week we started looking at a poem called ‘Five Little Owls’.

Maths Our first focus this year has been on place value. Students have used MAB blocks to represent 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. We have spent lots of time counting in 2s. We also spent some time on learning how to count efficiently. Our first strategy has been to put items into groups of 2 to make them easier to count, putting our ability to count in 2s to good use straight away.

Science We have commenced our unit on conserving Earth’s resources which has a focus on the water cycle and the weather. In our science lesson last week we looked at clouds and the role they play in the water cycle. The science word we have learnt this week is ‘conserve’.

Show and tell The Show and Tell roster went home last week. Students don’t have to do Show and Tell if they don’t want to but most of them are pretty keen!

A friendly reminder that Show and Tell is the only time toys can be brought to school from home. Show and Tell items need to go straight into the designated Show and Tell box and they are not to be taken out to play with during lunchtime or play time. There is a sports shed that is operated by the 5/6 class and students are encouraged to access this equipment during play time.

Miss Katie Black

YEAR 2/3/4 CLASS

Dear Families, In the Year 2/3/4 class, after spending a lot of our first week establishing classroom routines and expectations, we are off to a flying start with our learning in the second week. In English we are continuing to learn about the language that authors use to create characters and action, like adjectives, verbs and adverbs. In Maths we are still working on our understanding of place value. We plan to be finished our learning our Maths unit by next week and working on the assessment of student knowledge. Our next Maths unit will be about mapping and directions. This week we started our HASS and Science units. In HASS students are learning about how and why places change over time. While, in Science we are learning about geology and how landscapes and environments change. Students will learn about factors that affect environments, such as erosion. Just a reminder that our class, along with the rest of the school, starts swimming lessons next week. Students will need sun-safe swimmers, sun shirt, thongs. If students are sensitive to sun-screen, they must bring a suitable sunscreen. If students have goggles, they can bring them, but they should label them with their name and take good care of them.

I look forward to seeing parents at the meet and greet afternoon on Wednesday 5th February at 3:30pm. Kind regards,

Mr Bryce Younger
