FROM THE PRINCIPAL – MRS DONNA MUIR

Dear Families and Friends, This week our school community celebrated the great achievements of Term 3 by ending it with Family Week. As we do at the end of every term, we stop to take time for our family and friends. This week is assisted by having no homework and allowing more time for you to spend with each other. By educating our children to identify with their bodies the Early Warning Signs we ensure they speak up and remain safe at all times.

THANK YOU TO CONSTABLE JO GOODWIN FOR VISITING OUR CLASSROOMS DURING FAMILY WEEK - WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS!

Reflection

There must be always remaining in every life,

some place for the singing of angels, some place for

that which in itself is breathless and beautiful.

HOWARD THURMAN Visit St Patrick’s Cathedral: Once again, the Cathedral is a mass of flowers with magnificent displays everywhere you look. The creativity is astounding and I encourage every family to call in next week to savour, not only the visual feast but also the amazing scent and the sense of peace and tranquillity.

Local schools and colleges have contributed displays as well, with our own Year 2 students contributing to the theme…. “on earth as in Heaven”. A huge thank you to one of our very special Mums, Nikki Peterson (Christian, Yr 2) who has spent many, many hours helping to prepare various displays. Nikki was the mastermind behind the Yrs. 2 display (see above left) and also the floral displays in the sanctuary. Thank you to her team of helpers as well. The Cathedral is open to the public every day until next Friday so please consider calling in on your way past. NAPLAN: The distribution of individual NAPLAN reports has been delayed until probably Week 2 of next term. They will be sent home as soon as we get them. Thank you for your patience. WORK EXPERIENCE: This week we have been lucky to have 5 past students here on Work Experience. From St Mary’s College we had Matthew Dowsett and from St Joseph’s College, we had Taylor, Josie, Lachlan and Jacob. It was lovely to see how these boys and girls have grown up into mature young people. They had a busy week, involved with many activities around the school. We loved having them here and we wish them well in their future careers, whether it be teaching or not. Have a fabulous spring break,

Holiday Apps and activities QR Code Scavenger Hunt: A number of children have been interested in creating their own digital treasure hunt using iPads/iPods or tablets. To do this students will need to download a QR Reader App on the smart device, use a QR Code creator such as : http://createqrcode.appspot.com/ , access to a printer, camera app on smart device Step 1 Decide on the questions for the Treasure Hunt Step 2 Create the QR Codes, this is when you will type in the questions Step 3 Print each code as you create it Step 4 Practice the treasure hunt – just to make sure there are no problems Step 5 Get a group of friends or family to go on your Treasure Hunt Artrage: This is app available through Apple. The beauty of this app is that you can import a photo and use it to ‘trace’ and create a fantastic piece of art – great for those of us who struggle with drawing and painting but love to have a go. Also it is art without any mess which means no washing or cleaning! 8mm/Action Movie FX /iMovie: These apps when used in conjunction with iMovie can be lots of fun. I would recommend this to older students. 8mm and Action Movie FX can be used to add special effects in iMovie – was certainly a popular activity at Kids Connect! Happy Holidays to all families. I look forward to seeing everyone in October. Danielle Gleeson APA

If you would like to be included in this registry please send in your business cards to the office. This registry will be available for viewing at the office for members of our school community. YR 7 EDUCATIONAL TOUR OF CANBERRA AND SYDNEY

(9-13 SEPTEMBER 2013) On Friday of last week, an exhausted group of 51 Yr 7 students and 5 staff members returned from a fun-filled, very busy week exploring the history, democracy and many other interesting areas of Australia, culminating in a ZooSnooz (a night in Taronga Zoo) in Sydney. Students have spent time during this past week, reflecting on their many varied experiences and adventures, what they have learnt, what they enjoyed and have written reports on their experiences. A report from each area of our tour was selected to be presented, together with a PowerPoint presentation of tour photos, at Assembly on Friday morning in order to share the experience with the whole school and any parents who were able to join us. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for St Saviour’s Primary School and are to be congratulated on their wonderful attitude and participation in all the many, varied activities. We would, once again, like to acknowledge the generous subsidy in the form of the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) provided by the Australian Federal Government, which assisted our Yr 7 families in the payment of this tour.

Reports from students: Introduction – Maisie Crosdale: Wow, what a week! That was a time I will never forget! We flew and drove and flew and drove but in between all that, we slept at the AIS, visited Parliament House, New and Old, we visited the War Memorial, Questacon and Taronga Zoo. Those are only some of the activities we did. Many of these were and weren’t fun, but still everyone has a different opinion. Bus Transport – Written by Tiana Smith: Joe was the best driver. He drove us nearly everywhere we went. Joe was also very funny. He would always tell us jokes and stories that made us all laugh. We were all sad to see him go. Joe was very kind and always wanted to be sure we followed the rule of the bus, so on our last day, he made up a rap to tell us all the rules. It was hilarious. Everyday Joe would have a new hat. One day it was a Jamaican hat and on Wednesday he bought a new hat from Questacon. We all like Joe and we all miss him. Flights – Written by Eloise van der Linden: For my first time on a plane, the flight was wicked! Everyone was very excited. I couldn’t stop looking out of the window. We had a perfect view of what was below us. I thought that was the best experience in my life. We flew on Virgin Airlines and their staff were very helpful. It was very different and lots of fun. I couldn’t see a person without a smile on their faces on the flight to Canberra. It was very enjoyable. AIS – Written by Sarah Lewis: On Monday, at 2.30pm, we had our AIS guided tour and Sportex Interactive Exhibition. The tour was OK because I thought we would actually be seeing people train and talking to some athletes, but overall, it was interesting. The Sportex was fun. It was very hands-on and we had plenty to do. At 4pm we had our sports experience. We played touch, hockey and American handball. I was very disappointed because I thought we would be allowed to go into the places they train and use some of the equipment. I don’t think I’d like to do that again. Ice-skating – Written by Tom Dearnaley: After a busy first day in Canberra, our cheerful bus driver, Joe, drove us to an ice-skating rink. Upon entering the building, most of us were shocked at how cold it was inside. Eventually, after struggling to weave the laces into the shoes, we were all out skating on the rink. Although ice-skating is similar to roller-blading, the majority of us were having trouble keeping our balance and mastering the skating technique. As the night progressed more people were getting used to skating without the aid of the wall. However, most people did a good job of getting back up after a fall. In the end, most people enjoyed the night and would love to do it again. Old Parliament House (Museum of Australian Democracy) – Written by Nina Ryan: Old Parliament House was very educational and interesting. We learnt about the Senate and the House of Representatives. Plus, we learnt where every person sits in the Senate and we also sat in the Senate Room. Role playing in the Senate was a lot of fun. I learnt many interesting facts about Old Parliament House by using the interactive screens where the Library was located many years ago. I hope to go there again one day. Written by Thomas Markey: Old Parliament House was very historic. The women who were guiding our tours around Old Parliament House were very knowledgeable. The interactive room was one of the highlights and it was great fun to walk around the room and learn new things. Another highlight was when we went to the room for the House of the Senate. Ky Smith and Milly Mugford dressed up as Governor-Generals and read speeches. Throughout our tour at Old Parliament House, we had to wear gloves so that we couldn’t damage any old things with the acid in our skin. The tour of Old Parliament House was fun and should definitely be included in future tours.

Botanical Gardens by night – Written by Maisie Crosdale: On the coldest night, with a temperature of just 4⁰, we visited the Botanical Gardens. It might sound like looking at plants but when you know there are bats flying around it becomes much more interesting. We saw the rarest plant in the world and there were two of them. The story behind this plant was that some men were hiking and one happened to be a botanist. He found a cave and saw a plant he had never seen before so he returned with it and found out that it was thought to be extinct. It is now called the Dinosaur Pine. We saw many animals, kangaroos, possums, bunnies and a bird that looked like a lemon. Not to forget bats, we needed to use our 5 senses, to be safe and aware. So, plants are really quite interesting! The War Memorial – Written by Lachlan Brannelly: I found the War Memorial very interesting and our tour guide was very knowledgeable about everything he showed us and made it a very interesting experience. My group was being taught about the Japanese and how they attacked Australia and killed many of our soldiers and nurses. We learnt about a story involving an Australian nurse and how she and a group of other nurses were trapped on an island and the Japanese killed all the nurses except for this one woman who survived. We also looked at war planes and we watched a show about World War I. It was an amazing place and I wished I had more time to look around. Written by Katie Grant: The War Memorial was very interesting. We learnt about Australia’s history in war. Our tour guide told us many stories about war. One was about a boy who was only 14 years old, went to war and died. He was the youngest person to ever go to war. Going to the War Memorial has made me more respectful towards those women and men who have served our country and have made the ultimate sacrifice in hope that no more war will happen in the future. Written by Olivia Balderson: On our third day of camp, which was the Wednesday, we went to the War Memorial and learnt about Australia under attack. We learnt that the Japanese were trying to bomb the Sydney Harbour so the Australians built big, metal nets under the water so that the Japanese could not get through with their submarines. There was one submarine that did get through. It was called the Midget Submarine because it was so small. It got through the nets somehow and let off bombs. When the Midget Submarine was coming back to the big submarine, it got caught in the nets and let off a bomb inside the cockpit so that the submariners did not get taken as prisoners by Australia. Questacon (Science Centre) – Written by Ashleigh Conway: Questacon was a building full of experiments to prove and explain scientific concepts. It was really fun! My

favourite parts were the two-storey slide and the 360⁰ swing. The two-storey slide was a big, mostly vertical, metal slide with a bar at the top, which you hang onto and then let go and slide down the slide. We had to wear some groovy overalls for the slide and the swing. The 360⁰ swing was a platform connected to a big, straight pole. I went on it but not everybody did because they didn’t fit in the harness or we didn’t have enough time. I put on my overalls and a harness and I got strapped in by my wrists, ankles and the harness. To swing I got pulled back for the first time. I then had to squat at the top, then pull myself up at the top. I made it the whole way around, three times, and it was really, really fun.

Cockington Green Gardens – Written by Fletcher Price: My favourite activity of the week was when we did the night tour of the Cockington Green Gardens. When we arrived, it looked like it was going to be just another rose garden. We walked in and saw a little model house which was actually identical to the one behind but on a scale of 1:12. We then met the two men who ran the Gardens. We got onto a little train. It took us past a tall hedge then opened out and we saw a whole community of tiny, little houses and things. There were many little quirky things such as a streaker on the soccer field and the Star Wars characters at one part. There was also an international display with iconic buildings from different countries.

Sydney – Circular Quay – Written by Ky Smith: A lot of money was spent at Circular Quay, expecially at the store where the shopkeeper was giving very big discounts. Some of the things that were being bought were souvenirs such as snow-globes and T-shirts. Many people, including me, bought some lollies. We also had lunch at Hungry Jacks. Many people bought large frozen cokes for a dollar. A group also ran all the way to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There were many shops at Circular Quay. I think everyone enjoyed going there. It was very hot in Sydney, especially wearing our track suits so almost

everyone went to Maccas to buy cones. It was fun at Circular Quay, even though it was very busy. Sydney Opera House – Written by Lachlan Fulbohm: During our trip, we had a tour of the Opera House. After getting lost, we finally made it to the place we were meeting with our guide. We then went upstairs to the top floor and the guide showed us a video about when and how the Opera House was built. Then Pam

showed us two of the theatres in the Opera House and talked about how they were built. I think the Opera House tour was really interesting. Ferry trip - Written by Amber Winters: To get from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo, we had to catch a ferry. At first a huge 3-storey ferry pulled up. We thought we were going on that one. A couple of minutes later, a small hop-on, hop-off ferry pulled up and we ended up catching that one. It went pretty fast. We went past lots of places but we didn’t go under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. To see the Sydney Harbour Bridge from that angle was amazing. Some people got seasickness that played out on them for the night but I think that they thought it was totally worth it.

Taronga Zoo ZooSnooz – Written by Milly Mugford: Taronga Zoo was really exciting to see. At the zoo, we could see different animals, for example giraffes, chimpanzees, snakes and many more. Yr 7’s slept next to the crocodiles’ and monkeys’ enclosures. After an early start, we saw a few more animals in the morning. We also stopped to see some amazing birds. From the above accounts written by the students, it is clear that the tour was enjoyed by all and the students found it to be very interesting and educational. We know they have gained an immense amount of knowledge from the experiences they had. We hope that all our students remembered to thank their parents for enabling them to participate in this wonderful opportunity. Mrs Walker Mrs Choice Mrs Muir Mr Hannant Mr Schulze PINK MORNING TEA On Tuesday morning the staff were treated to a special “Pink Morning Tea” which was presented by the lovely office ladies, Christine, Julie and Carolin to raise money for Cancer research. The food was delicious and we thank the office ladies for their time and efforts into making the morning a wonderful success.

First Aid: On Monday afternoon and evening, St Saviour’s Primary School staff completed their First Aid and CPR training. Special thanks to Mr Hannant who organised Mr Pat Garrett to come and train us all on the night.

Mini Vinnies Activity Day Eight keen volunteers represented our Mini Vinnies group at the Social Justice Day organised by the Youth Team of St Vincent de Paul yesterday. The following report, written by our Year 7 Committee members, Lauren and Oliviah outlines the highlights. Special thanks to Mrs Lynne Sedl, Mrs Angela Ryan and Chloe Rock for providing transport and support for the students. The day started out with us putting our hand prints on fabric to remind us that we help others by

giving them a hand up when we are Mini Vinnies members. We had a talk from a team member of

the Multicultural Diversity Association. This Association is

helping asylum seekers and refugees from Afghanistan and we

practised some words

in their Darri

language which we

could use to welcome

them if we meet them.

We heard that

everyone had the right

to be safe. After

morning tea we split

into two groups, red

and yellow. The yellow group did an activity called The

Wealth of the World. We used kool fruits as money and we had to think about how money can and

should be shared. The red group made ads about a social justice issue. We chose Fresh Water in

Africa. The lesson from this activity was that we should not just believe what the media is telling

us. Each group did both workshops then we came together to do our posters, which highlighted

the helping work of Vinnies. The last reflection used lemons which made us see how we have

bumps and crinkles but are basically the same. At 12:30 we had a sausage sizzle prepared by the

local St Vincent de Paul members and we enjoyed talking to the Holy Name students. The whole

group had great fun and loved every moment of the day.

FAIRHOLME SPRING CARNIVAL OF SWIMMING

Parkinson’s INVITATIONAL MEET 2013

I am just writing to say thank you to all the students who swam at the Parkinson's Invitational Meet. The meet was a huge success and it was a pleasure to have your school participate in such a great cause. I would also like to thank the Teachers and Parents that got involved to allow the students to swim and raise money for a worthy foundation. We had 81 swimmers enjoy a fantastic afternoon of swimming together in which they raised $377.00. This achievement was matched by Fairholme College staff member, giving a generous individual donation of $380.00. So the total monies raised for Parkinson’s Queensland was $757.00. So a big congratulations on such a terrific effort. We look forward to holding the Parkinson's Invitational Meet again and very excited to see you all return next year. Kindest Regards
