Something exciting is on its way……………

KPS staff have been very busy. Watch this space

Guess Who?

I am a Foundation Teacher at KPS. I miss being at school with my awesome students and can't wait to see them in person!

When I'm not teaching, I love spending time with my family – husband, Glenn and children, Tom and Violet.

We love taking our golden Labrador 'Murphy' for walks and recently adopted two chickens, 'Pecky' and 'Penny'. Pecky even met some of the teachers on a video confer-ence over the holidays! She loves using technology to stay connected, but always makes sure there is a grown up close by (even chickens need to be cybersafe!)

We have been baking lots and making the most of our days, even though they are very different to what we are used to.

I hope you’re all well and finding ways to be creative with your learning and play at home. Be safe and see you soon!

Numeracy News Mrs Vilinskis and Captain Marvel the Amazing Mathematician have been working with the teachers to plan interesting Maths activities for all of the students. Captain Marvel would love it if students could email pictures of their maths work to Mrs Vilinskis at [email protected] especially so he can continue his mission to see how ‘Maths is everywhere!’, even when you are working remotely. See you next time.

Thanks and Gratitude On our sixteenth day of remote learning, I would like to compliment everyone on how far we have come in such a short period of time. Whether we are parents, students or teachers we have all had to adapt to new ways of working whilst juggling different priorities. These times have asked a lot of us, but we know that remote learning will be a short period of time in the larger scheme of things. I would like to thank everyone for their patience and fortitude during this time. We know that the public health measures being employed have been incredibly successful and we know that in the coming weeks we will see the return of some of our old social routines. It has been hard work for everyone but together we are making a difference. As a school we fully appreciate that families and parents are under significant pressure at the moment. To paraphrase my message from last week, the most important thing is that your family is safe, well and connected to each other. Do the best you can in your circumstances – we are here to support and understand, not to judge. Be kind to yourself, be gentle on yourself. Remote Learning and Google Classroom I would like to thank everyone for their prompt uptake of Google Classroom. We have nearly 90% of students enrolled and currently our Grade 2 cohort is leading the way with over 92% of students enrolled. I would like to thank our parents, teachers and students for the effort they have put into adapting to this new way of learning. As we progress throughout the term, our use of Google Classroom will evolve. Our next step is to implement daily classroom briefings through the meetings functions within Google Classroom. The Department of Education is currently working through the last few technical issues to make this happen and we expect to have this operating in the very near future. Community Connection Thank you to all of our community members who have been engaging with our theme days and sharing their stories and pictures of their remote learning experiences. We greatly appreciate all of the photographs, letters, stories and artworks which have been posted to our Facebook page or onto Google Classroom. I would encourage everyone to keep up the posting, it’s a fabulous way of keeping our community connected during this time. Many thanks to our teachers for joining in this spirit of fun and camaraderie by providing their Prep photos for our “Match the Teacher” activity. If you have any suggestions for theme days or activities that you feel would build community connection, please send these through to our school email, [email protected]. KPS Staff – Performance Art! The staff of Kilmore Primary School have been working on a special piece of “performance art” for our community. The picture in today’s newsletter will give you a hint of what we have been working on. All I can say is “watch this space”. I am sure you are going to have quite a chuckle when you see the finished product.

Family and Student Wellbeing At KPS, student and family wellbeing is one of our core priorities. We are fortunate to have a fabulous Wellbeing Team led by Assistant Principal, Julie Smith, and Primary Welfare Officer, Kimberly Batsas-Hill. If you have any questions regarding your child’s or your family’s wellbeing, please feel free to make contact with Julie and Kimberly – they have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of wellbeing and will help to provide you with the supports you need. In our newsletter, you will also find some great advice and strategies from Kimberly about how to support your child during the remote learning period. All the best,

Neil O’Sullivan

We have had another fantastic week of Literacy Learning at home.

If you would like to share your Literacy work in next week’s school newsletter, please email Ms White at [email protected]

The National Simultaneous Story time is an initiative, held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association, which celebrates reading and children’s literacy. This year the NSS takes place on Wednesday 27 May 2020 at 11:00am and we would love it if you could join us! Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year, ‘Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas’, written by Lucinda Gifford, has been chosen for this event. Whitney and Britney are two gorgeous chooks, Fluffy and silky with stunning good looks. Dora is perplexed about where her chooks go each night. Little does she know, they are Whitney and Britney, Chicken Divas!

As outlined in last week’s newsletter, last week, the Office of the Governor launched a new initiative for children and young people. This initiative aims to encourage young Victorians to identify someone who inspires them, because of the work or actions they take in support of others. The Office of the Governor is asking children and young people to make a video, draw or write a short poem or paragraph about their special someone. It might be a family member or friend, someone in their school or neighbourhood or a local faith, sports, performance or other community group. They are encouraged to share their work with the Office of the Governor via email. The Office of the Governor will then select a few of these pieces each week and share them on our social media channels and on our website. For more information, please see https://www.governor.vic.gov.au/all-news/someone-special-program

Have a great week, Emma White

Tilly’s Big Chop

On the 20th April, I had the “Big Chop” and cut off approximately 37cm. My hair will be made into a wig to help a child who has lost their hair due to a medical condition such as cancer. Along with my hair donation I was hoping to raise $500. However with amazing support and generous donations I have currently raised over $1000! If you would still like to donate, please go to:

https://hairwithheart.variety.org.au/fundraisers/jobosworth/hair-with-heart

Thank you KPS and families for all your support in helping me to make a difference and raise awareness for Variety’s Hair with Heart.

Words from Wellbeing

The last couple of weeks has come with a range of uncertainty and unpredictability for all of us. In today’s newsletter, I have included a simple playdoh and rock activity that we can do to start to understand and identify things that are ‘within our control’ and things that are ‘out of our control’. In this activity, we compare the difference between playdoh (things we can control) and rocks (things we cannot control). The playdoh is soft and mouldable and we can easily make different shapes with it. The rocks however, are rough, hard to mould and hard to change – just like some things and situations in our lives.

What Can I Control Activity: Supplies needed: - Playdoh/Slime/Anything that can move - Rocks - Circle of control worksheet (below) Questions to help facilitate activity: - What happens when we squeeze the rock? Try and bend it. Roll it. Are you able to change the rock? - What happens when we squeeze the playdoh? Squeeze as hard as you can. Try and bend it. Roll it. Are you able to change the playdoh? When we think about things out of our control, we do not change them. When we focus on things we can control, we can help create action and develop some coping skills.
