    Dear ISPRS SC Newsleer readers,

    Recently I have nished interdisciplinary spaceprogram SHS-SP organised by ISU (Interna-onal Space University) and UniSA (Universityof South Australia), where among other thingswe talked about satellite dependency on ev-eryday life. I was surprised although satelliteimages are my everyday occupaon I haventbeen exactly aware how much satellites are

    actually aecng my everyday world. Weather forecasts, trac navi-gaon, television broadcasts, Earth observaons for environmentalpurposes are only some of the most obvious space technologies thathumanity relies on. What about transfer telephone calls with yourfamily and friends from another parts of the world, vising them usingaeroplanes, ATM service usage, mobile phone connecon with remoteareas, trac light arrangements, why we take all this for granted?

    In the 50 years since satellites rst went into orbit, the use of satel-lite services to benet our lives has drascally increased. Space tech-

    nologies have become integrated into everyday day life so deeply thatmodern society today could not funcon without them. Satellites havethousands of uses and perform it without most ever being seen. Weare no longer at the mercy of unexpected weather paerns that couldkill hundreds of people, as our weather satellites warn us of impend-ing disasters. Satellites surrounding the globe allow us to link up withother countries and people in an instant. It is impossible for us nowto expect not to see internaonal news live. People use them alsoto study the universe, assist in the navigaon of ships, trains and air-cras, monitor crops, for naonal security, for mobile connecons,remote educaon and health and have many more other importantfuncons.Raising public awareness is therefore important to stress our impor-tance on space acvies. Understanding of relaonship betweenEarth and space can be encouraged more through promoon of sci-ence, technology, engineering and mathemacs in educaon, popu-lar culture and related social media, interacve television programs Some of this suggesons are already in pracce but general satel -lite importance sll lies in the background. Therefore be aware of the

    advantages that satellites are providing for us and respect how theirfuncons are making our everyday life easier.

    What kind of achievements will you expect in the ISPRS Student

    Consorum?

    The ISPRS-SC is a kind of interface for internaonal members, andwork for issues of concern to them. The Student Consorum con-tributes to the organizaon of summer schools and related acvi-es. These acvies and the SC Newsleers are nice for the stu-dents and worth connuing. To expand the ISPRS-SC membershipand adverse our programs, I would like to suggest that ISPRS-SCenhance its ocial website and try other social media. Varioussocial media, including Facebook, Twier, LinkedIn, and the like,may aract more students and young sciensts to our proposed

    programs. This way, ISPRS-SC could increase the number of mem-

    bers who address the issues and enriching newsleers. In addionto increasing the membership of ISPRS-SC, we could also establishconnecons with other student organizaons for future collabora-on and internaonal acvies. The student groups in the Ameri-can Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) andAsian Associaon on Remote Sensing (AARS) are two possible op-portunies for such cooperaon. I believe that in the next fouryears ISPRS-SC will have more variety and oer broader connec-ons to forfy and promote our knowledge and experience.

    What are your plans as the Chair of ISPRS WG VI/5 in the next four years?

    In the last four years, thanks to the excellent work of Prof. Emmanuel (Ma-nos) Baltsavias and other WG ocers, the WG VI/5 organized many suc-cessful events for students. These events, including academic exchanges,tutorials and summer schools, provided the young generaon great op-portunies to establish an internaonal network among ISPRS StudentConsorum (SC) members and share knowledge within ISPRS. The region-al coordinators within the structure of ISPRS-SC also provided great helpsin establishing links between local students and the global network. Thenumber of SC members has increased signicantly, Asian youths espe -cially, during the last few years. This indicates that the exisng programs

    are eecve and useful for the younger generaon. However, we may sllneed to consider future expansion, especially in the Americas and Africa.

    For the next four years, ISPRS WG VI/5 will connue its current programsand promoon and supervision of ISPRS-SC. We look forward to workingwith students and playing an acve role in the enhancement of currentsituaons. The internaonal network should be sll an important issueand will need us to maintain connecons with ISPRS sister sociees. Thiscooperaon should provide an eecve plaorm to invite internaonalstudents to aend technical tutorials and summer schools. So far, there

    have been eight summer schools in Europe, Asia and North America. Weare thinking about other possible regions to hold the summer school inorder to let more students from dierent countries aend these events.During 2013-2016, the Youth Forum and Summer School will be our ma -jor events to promote young professionals as much as we can. In addion,we will work with other ISPRS technical commissions, working groups andsister sociees to create opportunies for these sciensts. Possible acvi-es include capacity building workshops and establishing eecve chan -nels for the exchange of job opportunies and other helpful informaon. Ihope that all students have the chances to be involved in this organizaonand enjoy their professional careers in the future.

    Asian Associaon of Remote Sensing (AARS) workedwith the Geo-Informacs and Space Technology De-

    velopment Agency (GISTDA) and the Ministry of Sci-ence and Technology (MOST) to hold the 33rd Asian

    Conference on Remote Sensing in Paaya, Thailandduring 26 Nov. to 30 Nov. 2012. Topics covered in-cluded disaster migaon, environmental science,and data processing. This annual conference wassuccessful in oering knowledge and opportuniesfor advancements to students and young profession-als. In addion to the ordinary technical sessions,several events were organized specically for theyounger generaon.

    Two Student Sessions were devoted to student re-search acvies. At the White Elephant workshop, Prof. Armin Gruen, Prof. JohnTrinder and Prof. Shunji Murai gave instrucon in thesis wring, proposal makingand presentaon skills. In the second student session, representaves from ISPRSStudent Consorum (ISPRS-SC) and AARS Student Group (ASG) reported on theirlatest achievements. Nine students from seven dierent countries also shared theiruniversity research acvies.

    Eight student teams entered WEBCON2, a contest to create websites promong

    geo-informaon science. The gold prize, silver prize, and bronze prizes went to theteams from Thailand, China Taipei, and Japan, respecvely. At the Student Party,the organizers arranged a banquet so that student parcipants could mingle andestablish their own internaonal networks. The number of parcipants reached 70including Prof. Armin Gruen, Prof. Shunji Murai, Prof. Emmanuel (Manos) Baltsav-ias, Prof. Kohei Cho, and Prof. Fuan Tsai.

    A student session was rst oered in 2007 at the 28th ACRS in Kuala Lumpur, Ma-laysia. Parcipants worked for several years to formalize the Asian student orga-nizaon as a student chapter of AARS. By the 33rd ACRS, AARS nalized the tleof Asian student group as AARS Student Group (ASG). The governing statutes of

    ASG are sll under renement. ASG inially selectedFacebook to promote this organizaon and distribute

    the latest informaon about conferences and issues ofconcern. This Facebook page, ASG (Asian Associaonon Remote Sensing Student Group), welcomes stu-dents with related backgrounds to get involved in thediscussions. Now, ASG is ready to connect with otherglobal student organizaons such as ISPRS-SC for furthercooperaon.

    The web contest (WEBCON) aims to promote Internet distribuon of geospaal informaon and ideas

    to students and young sciensts in Asian. Any students or professionals under 35 years old registeredwith the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS), was eligible to enter web materials in WEBCON.

    The Asian Associaon on Remote Sensing (AARS) had cooperated with ISPRS WG VI/ 1&2 to organizethe rst WEBCON at the 32nd Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) in Taipei, Taiwan. WEBCON1was successful with around 50 parcipants and organizers were encouraged to connue this event. In2012, WEBCON2 was held at the 33rd ACRS in Paaya, Thailand. The number of parcipants this yearincreased to around 80 parcipants and web entries. Each team was given 20 minutes to present itsmaterials and answer quesons, followed by an hour and half of free demonstraons. Finally, the WEB-CON2 Jury selected the following winners.     The University of the Philippines (UP) is the countrys premiere state university.At present, the UP System is comprised of seven constuent universies in eencampuses all over the country. The UP Diliman campus in Quezon City is the ag-ship campus of the UP System and oers the most courses. The College of Engi-neering in UP Diliman has eight academic departments, one of which is the Depart-ment of Geodec Engineering.

    The Department of Geodec Engineering was established by UP and the Philip-pines Bureau of Lands as the School of Surveying in 1937. The Department beganby oering a 5-year undergraduate course leading to the degree of Bachelor ofScience in Geodec Engineering. In 1964, the Training Center for Applied Geodesyand Photogrammetry (TCAGP) was inaugurated and integrated into the Depart-ment. The TCAGP, created as an extension of the department, oers short coursesin surveying, mapping and geospaal sciences relevant to the needs of govern -ment agencies, industry and private individuals involved in the inventory, mappingand planning of natural resources. Graduate courses in Remote Sensing and Geo -graphic Informaon Systems (GIS) were oered in the 1990s leading to the degree

    of Master of Science in Remote Sensing, as part of the RP-Australia Remote SensingProject. In 1993, the rst instruconal laboratory, the Remote Sensing and ImageAnalysis Laboratory, was established. The ESRI GIS Laboratory was then foundedin 2003, followed by the formaon of the rst research laboratory, the AppliedGeodesy and Space Technology (AGST) Laboratory, in 2005. In 2010, the graduateprogram was revised as the Master of Science in Geomacs Engineering, which of-fers specializaons in Remote Sensing, Applied Geodesy and Geoinformacs.

    The Department of Geodec Engineering is the countrys leading instuon ingeospaal research and educaon and is recognized by the Commission on Higher

    Educaon (CHED) as a Center of Excellence in Geodec Engineering. The depart-

    ments mission is to bring out the best in its students and develop new ways bywhich science and technology of earth and space observaon and measurement

    can be strengthened to make it work for the good of the naon. Its vision is to be-come a naonally relevant and internaonally recognized academic instuon ofempowered and competent faculty and sta, globally compeve graduates, withstate-of-the-art facilies that will further the causes of academic excellence, lead-ership, and service to the country. The department is currently composed of two(2) instruconal laboratories and four (4) research laboratories, which include the

    AGST Laboratory, the Environmental Systems Applicaons of Geomacs Engineer-ing Laboratory (EnviSAGE), Geosimulaon Laboratory (GeoSim), and the Surveying

    and Land Valuaon Laboratory (SurvLAV).

    A student session was rst oered in 2007 at the 28th ACRS in Kuala Lumpur, MaTheDepartment of Geodec Engineering organizes numerous academic acvies andparcipates in various research endeavors. The department hosts a monthly semi-nar, which discusses various topics in geospaal informaon sciences that can helpstudents in gaining more knowledge in their selected eld of study. Furthermore,the department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Univer-sity of Seoul, South Korea, which aims to establish instuonal links for the devel -

    opment of academic cooperaon and promoon of mutual understanding throughvarious academic acvies. Student research topics are geared towards engineer-ing soluons to various environmental issues through the comprehensive applica -ons of RS and GIS in environmental monitoring, disaster migaon, risk assess-ment, mapping of natural resources and many others. The Department of GeodecEngineering connues to improve and boost its programme through constant fac-ulty development and facility upgrades to be able to keep up with the demands ofa developing naon and the challenges in the global community.

    The 8th ISPRS Student Consorum and WG VI/5 Summer School

    The 8th ISPRS Student Consorum and WG VI/5 Summer School was held at Bura-pha University, Chonburi, Thailand from November 30 to December 4, 2012. The

    Summer School was one of the concurrent acvies of the recently concluded 33rdAsian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2012). The theme for this SummerSchool was Advanced Remote Sensing Coastal Zone Monitoring and Disaster Man-agement.

    Fiy-six parcipants, twenty-one from Thailand and thirty-ve from other coun -tries, gathered for this event. The Summer School consisted of comprehensivelectures from invited speakers coming from academe, industry and other orga -nizaons. The lecturers included Dr. Shunji Murai (Professor Emeritus, Universityof Tokyo), Dr. Abhijat Arun Abhyankar (NICMAR, India), Professor Emmanuel Balt-savias (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), Dr. Akira Mukaida, (Remote Sensing Technology

    Center of Japan), Ms.Supaporn Manajitprasert (Faculty of Geoinformacs, BuraphaUniversity), Captain Sommart Niemnail (Hydrographic Engineering Department Or-ganizaon, Royal Thai Naval Academy), and Dr. Anukul Buranapratheprat (Depart-ment of Aquac Science, Faculty of Science, Burapha University).

    Parcipants were warmly welcomed by the local organizers from Burapha Univer-sity and the Geo-Informacs and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).The parcipants toured the 256-acre campus and were given an opportunity tovisit the aquarium at the Instute of Marine Science.

    To further edu-cate the parci-pants in the useof remote sens-ing techniquesin disaster mi-gaon, a visit toThailands East-ern Seaboardwas organized.Ban Nong Fab

    and Saeng ChanBeaches were

    severely aected by coastal erosion. Professors and students from Burapha Uni-versity explained how these beaches were being monitored and protected usingestablished methods in remote sensing. The day trip connued with sightseeingat Mab Ta Put and PMY Beaches and a short break at the famous Ko Kloi Market.The Summer School provided a great opportunity for the parcipants to exploreThailands rich culture. The social events showcased Thailands popular tradion-al dances, spicy food, and entertaining games, providing a fun and comfortableenvironment for the parcipants. The Icebreaker Party on the rst day allowed

    parcipants to get to know one another and to show a bit of teamwork throughchallenging games. Moreover, this Summer School further strengthened the so -cial network among students and young professionals. It was not only a venue forgaining more knowledge in the eld of geospaal informaon sciences, but also achance to interact and exchange ideas with fellow students and researchers. Theweek ended successfully with a farewell party, which featured performances fromthe parcipants.

    The 1st Philip-pine Geomat-

    ics Symposium( P h i l G E O S2012) was heldfrom Novem-ber 23-24, 2012at the Collegeof Engineering,University ofthe Philippines Diliman, withthe theme

    Philippine Geomacs: Pracce, Applicaon and Ac-

    complishments. This event was organized by theDepartment of Geodec Engineering, as one of themajor acvies of its 75th founding anniversary, inpartnership with the Philippine Council for Industry,Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Devel-opment of the Department of Science and Technology(PCIEERD-DOST). PhilGEOS was envisioned as a majorgathering of researchers, educators and industry ex-perts in the eld of geomacs from dierent parts ofthe country. PhilGEOS was a pioneering and signi-cant event which aimed to synthesize and publicizethe pracces and applicaons of geomacs in the Phil-ippines, and the various accomplishments aained.The symposium provided a plaorm for various sec-tors involved in geomacs to gather and exchangeknowledge, and to gain insight into the most recentstate-of-the-art technology, techniques and soluons.Six plenary speakers were invited in the symposium:(1) Dr. Yousif Ali Hussin, Associate Professor of RemoteSensing and GIS in the Department of Natural Resourc-

    es of the Faculty of Geo-Informaon Science and EarthObservaon ITC, University of Twente, Enschede, TheNetherlands; (2) Dr. Rhodora Gonzalez, Associate Pro-

    fessor at the Department of Geodec Engineering,University of the Philippines; (3) Dr. Enrico Paringit, As-

    sociate Professor in the Department of Geodec Engi-

    neering, University of the Philippines; (4) Mr. AlastairDuncan, Technical Specialist with the UK EnvironmentAgency, United Kingdom; (5) Dr. Hiroyuki Miyazaki,Project Researcher at the Earth Observaon Data In-tegraon & Fusion Research Iniave (EDITORIA), TheUniversity of Tokyo, Japan; and (6) Engr. Rey Adorador,President of Certeza Infosys Corporaon. The speakerscovered a wide range of topics which are of primaryimportance in the eld of geomacs in the Philippines,including forest carbon stock modeling, LiDAR and

    remote sensing applicaons, integraon of Earth ob-

    servaon data, current research iniaves, geomacseducaon, and local trends in surveying and mapping.In addion, OSGeo-PH and the organizing commieehosted a series of pre-conference workshops, featur-ing the latest free and open source technology for geo-macs applicaons.

    Twenty-three oral presentaons and 5 ve posterswere presented in the symposium, in the followingsession themes: Geomacs Science and Engineering

    Development, Geospaal Technology for Earth Re-source Mapping and Assessment, Geomacs and the

    Environment, and Geomacs in Disaster Risk Assess-

    ment and Mi-gaon. All inall, there were274 parcipantswho aended,coming fromacademe (bothteachers andstudents), gov-ernment, and

    industry.

    PhilGEOS was able to establish a powerful academic-industry connecon by facilitang the exchange ofideas among the various organizaons specializingin the eld of geomacs. The symposium furtherstrengthened research and development iniaves ingeospaal informaon sciences and encouraged col-laboraon in the connuously growing geospaal sci-ence and technology eld in the Philippines.

    Environmental monitoring is of crucial importance. It

    helps to understand how our planet and its climate arechanging, the role played by human acvies in thesechanges and how these will inuence our daily lives.To take the right acon, decision makers, businessesand cizens must be provided with reliable and up-to-date informaon on how our planet and its climate arechanging. To achieve this aim, Copernicus, (formerlyknown as GMES/Global Monitoring for Environmentand Security) is the European Programme for the es -tablishment of a European capacity for Earth Observa-on (hp://copernicus.eu).

    Copernicus consists of a complex set of systems whichcollect data from mulple sources: earth observaonsatellites and in situ sensors such as ground staons,airborne and seaborne sensors. It processes thesedata and provides users with reliable and up-to-dateinformaon through a set of services related to envi -ronmental and security issues.

    Copernicus, supports a wide range of applicaons,including environment protecon, management ofurban areas, regional and local planning, agriculture,forestry, sheries, health, transport, climate change,sustainable development, civil protecon and tour-ism. Its six main themac areas are: Land Monitoring Marine Monitoring Atmosphere Monitoring Emergency Management Security Climate Change

    The above services have reached dierent degrees of

    maturity. Some are already operaonal (land moni-

    toring and emergency management) while others aresll in a pre-operaonal mode (atmosphere monitor-ing and marine monitoring) or in a development phase(climate change monitoring and services for securityapplicaons). One of the most important issues is thatusers have free access to these services.

    The main users of Copernicus services are policymak-ers and public authories who need the informaonto develop environmental legislaon and policies or totake crical decisions in the event of an emergency,

    such as a natural disaster or a humanitarian crisis.The provision of Copernicus services is based on theprocessing of environmental data collected from twomain sources, the space component and the insitu component.

    The space component is the responsibility of theEuropean Space Agency (ESA), which coordinates thedelivery of data from upwards of 30 satellites. TheContribung Missions, which are operated by naon-al, European or internaonal organisaons, alreadyprovide a wealth of data for Copernicus services; theSennels satellites will provide another set of observa-ons.     The in situ component is the responsibility of the Eu-ropean Environment Agency (EEA), which coordinatesthe gathering of data coming from both European andnon-European organisaons. These data come from

    Since the launch of the inial concept of Copernicusback in 1998, substanal investments for in researchand development of Earth observaon have beenmade by the European Union, the European SpaceAgency and their respecve member states. Overthe last 10 years, numerous R&D projects have con -tributed to the development of the Copernicus infra-structure and services. Today, several EU- and ESA-funded projects are invesgang possible opons to

    The Copernicus programme is coordinated and man-aged by the European Commission.     The total number of satellite images for all winners will be 50 image les total(up to 10 image les per parcipant).An image means an image le as it appears in DMCii catalogue (hp://www.dmcii.com/catalogue.html). Images vary in size according to how the satellite

    was congured on the day of acquision, but the max size les are 330x330km.Proposals should include archive images only; no new acquisions will bedone as part of this announcement.In the proposal, include the full name of the images that you would like to useaer you idenfy them in the image catalogue.Satellite images included must be from the UK-DMC2 satellite only. Select onlyimages with ID numbers beginning U2 (UK-DMC2) or DU (UK-DMC1) from thecatalogue.By default, L1R products will be supplied. These are band registered and radio-metrically corrected, not-orthoreced. If there is an L1T product availablethat appears in the catalogue it can be included in the proposal.Data will be licensed for academic use only (no commercial use of the data canbe done at any stage).Oer open to members of ISPRS Student Consorum only.All winners need to select their datasets by the end of 2013Selecon criteria. Studies that match the following criteria are encouraged:Applicaons that really exploit the wide area/multemporal aspect of DMCdata or the use of DMC data to ll gaps in Landsat me-seriesApplicaons those are really suitable for 22m resoluonWinners will supply ISPRS and DMCii with a copy of copy of relevant theses/papers that emerge from their use of the imagery, as well as some brief slides

    showing results; ISPRS and DMCii will have permission to present these atconferences with the due credit and reference to the authors.
