“I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night”
– David (Psalm 63:6).
The Bible is filled with stories about people who intimately
knew God. Think of Moses meeting God on the mountain, of David
singing psalms of praise, and of the disciples eating, walking, and living
with Jesus.
God spoke to these people not because they were especially
holy, but because they were listening. Remember that Jesus is alive and
is still speaking. As his people, we can expect to hear his voice when we
listen for it. As Richard Foster puts it, “Jesus is not idle, nor has he de-
veloped laryngitis! He is alive and among us as our Priest to forgive us,
our Prophet to teach us, our King to rule us, our Shepherd to guide us.”
In the Bible – and throughout Christian history – God’s people
have heard God’s voice as they withdrew temporarily from the hubbub
and distractions of the daily routine to seek God’s face. Even Jesus with-
drew from the masses in order to be still in God’s presence (Matt
14:13). In the Christian tradition, this practice is often called
“meditation,” or “contemplation.” This has nothing to do with so-called
“Eastern meditation” (where the goal is detachment) but rather is fo-
cused on attachment to God in Christ by the power of the Spirit. Quite
simply, the goal of Christian meditation is to develop a deeper friend-
ship with our Creator and Savior. It’s about meeting and knowing God.
Now, we’ve all experienced times of distraction when we were
physically present, but mentally or emotionally checked-out. When we
want to communicate well, we try to eliminate distractions. The same
consideration should be given to our communing with God. While there
are no “tricks” to meeting the Creator of the universe, there are certain
practices Christians over the centuries have found that help us.

Editor’s side notes: The Session did not meet in July. On occasion, either the computer or I have made a mis-take in dates with birthdays and anniversaries. Thank you for your corrections. I also thank all of you for your generous responses to requests for food, goods and services by various committees or the office. Jeannette Peterson, Administrative Assistant
Grateful Thanks!
I am so blessed to be a member of this congregation. I wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who donated to my recent fundraiser. A spe-cial thank you to those who gave their time and the food. I am two months into a six month treatment for Hep C and it has been tough at times. The good news is it is work-ing . I feel God has work for me to do, so it’s time to heal and get about it. Thank you again, Dave Armstrong
First, pick a time. Having a predetermined, regular time
is very beneficial.
Second, you can meditate on God anywhere, but seek
to step away from your normal distractions (TV, internet,
phone, radio, etc.)
Third, meditate on Christ. The Apostle Paul says we
see the glory of God in the face of Christ (2 Cor 4:6). As
Christians, it is always to Christ that we turn.
Yes, but how do we
meditate on Christ? To aid us
as we seek God-in-Christ, we
have the scripture, creation,
and the events of the day.
Scripture. “ All Scrip-
ture is breathed out by God and
profitable for teaching, for re-
proof, for correction, and for
training in righteousness” (2
Tim 3:16). God makes himself
known to us through the words
of Scripture. Yet, meditating on God in the Scripture means
more than simply reading the text then shutting the book.
Rather, read slowly. Internalize and personalize the
scripture. It was written for you! Ponder the words of God –
even those passages you know well and those you find superfi-
cial.
Creation. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and
the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Ps 19:1). The crea-
tion reveals the greatness and majesty of our Lord. Take a
walk. Get out of town (or at least outside!), marveling in the
beauty of creation and the greater beauty of the Creator.
Events. It is also fruitful to meditate on current events.
With the Bible as your guide, consider the events of the day.
Where do you see God working? Where was God leading you?
Enjoy getting to know God better this month!
Grace & peace,
Pastor Andrew

A Call Committee has been formed to look for people of
ALL generations who want to teach our young people about God. Through FUN activities, Fellowship, and Bible Study our youth will come to learn about being a good Christian and value the relationships they build, strengthening our church and all the lives of those in-volved in our LOGOS program.
Positions we are seeking are:
Recreation Coordinator–some one who is energetic, likes to have fun, and is creative about different types of games, and isn't embarrassed to join in. Worship Skills Coordinator–someone creative, flexi-ble, and open to finding new ways to teach our youth about helping out during worship service or about wor-ship itself. Bible Study Teachers–a person who can educate our youth about God and being a good Christian through fun. Cooks–people who know their way around a kitchen and can follow a menu to provide a good, healthy, kid- friendly meal to be served during Logos fellowship. Shopper–a person who will follow a menu and pur-chase ingredients for the cooks to have available when needed. Table Parents–people who respect our youth and en-courage them to use manners and follow the dinner guidelines while sharing conversation (how their day/week has been, things they are looking forward to), sharing a meal, and building relationships.

David & Brenda Peterson
David Peterson has lived in Huron all of his life. Born to Larry and Joyce Peterson, he has one sister, Lorna (Jeff) Poncelet of Ramona SD. While in high school he was very involved in hockey and had an exchange student from Norway as a brother for a year. After Huron High School he became a machinist and worked for Hurd Alignment for 14 years. In February 2003 he began his own business. Dave, and his partner Jimmy Tschetter, founded PJ’s Machine and Repair, located ¾ mile west on Hwy. 14 where they re-pair various farm machinery. They also do contract orders for Trail King and Overbuilt. In 2007 the business expanded, putting up a new building, and they now employ eight people. Brenda’s parents, MelRoy and Carol Miller, lived near Bancroft and farmed. Brenda has three brothers. Max (Jill) has MJM Trucking near Ban-croft. Her brother Lionel (Jeannie) farms near Bancroft and Russ (Darcy) farms near Iroquois. After Brenda graduated from Iroquois High School she attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls where she became a certified Medical Secretary. She then returned to Huron and worked for Dr. Curt Buchholz. She now works for S.D. Federal Property here in town. Dave and Brenda were married by Pastor Bill Pfautz in First Church 22 years ago, have three children all baptized and confirmed in our church. Their daughter, Shauna, was married to Spencer Shoultz in First Church this June. The couple is now living in Davenport IA where she is continuing her education at Palmer College of Chiropractic. Their son, Dirk, graduated this year and will be attending Watertown Tech., studying Precision Ma-chine. Their son, Dillon, will be a Junior in high school. He works part time at Farmer’s Cashway. He went to the Triennium in July at Purdue and the Wilderness Camp in the Black Hills. As a family, the Petersons delight in camping and Dave and Brenda have taken motorcycle trips. Dave is a Shriner and belongs to the Masons. He has served as an usher. Brenda has taught Sunday School and Vaca-tion Bible School. She has been involved in Logos, teaching and cooking. She is currently a Deacon.
Annual Fall Supper
October 27th is the date of the Second Annual Fall Supper
(pending approval of the session). The fall supper was a
great success last year and we hope for even bigger and bet-
ter things this year. This year we will be forming committees
to head up different areas of the supper such as food prepa-
ration, desserts, advertising, silent auction, decorating, serv-
ing and cleanup. Please consider being part of this wonder-
ful event and take the opportunity to give to the updates and
repairs that are very much needed by the church. If you
would like to be part of a committee please call Deb VanO-
verschelde 350-4491 or Stephanie Meyer 354-0473.
