NEWSLETTER 22 February 2019
Last week, the Church celebrated the Feast Day of St Bakhita of Sudan; St Bakhita was a Sudanese religious sister who lived in the late 19
th and early 20
th centuries. She is the patron saint of those subjected to human trafficking which reflects
her own experiences of being abducted and sold into slavery before the age of ten. Her life is one that highlights transformation possible through the Christian message of hope. It is also a life and message entirely at odds with the recent furore regarding the fate of refugees and asylum seekers that Australia has imprisoned offshore for more than five years. With last week’s passage of the ‘MediEvac’ bill in the Federal Parliament, there is once again the prospect of months of refugees, asylum seekers and those who have been subject to the worst forms of human trafficking, being demonised. 2018 VCE & VCAL Top Achievers Assembly Last Tuesday, the whole Sacred Heart community came together to recognise the outstanding results last year in both VCE and VCAL. The College Dux, Jason Vardon, as well as Dux Proximus, Ruth Hughes, were given special recognition while the College Top Ten students (according to ATAR), and those who achieved individual study scores above 40 were also celebrated. Despite the inclement weather, it was a joy to see so many parents and grandparents in attendance with most staying on for morning tea in the Arthurson Atrium. The assembly also had the privilege of hearing from past student, Ms Kate Nuttall (Class of 1988) who challenged students at all levels to pursue those endeavours that gave them joy and not to be too fixated on a particular career path.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Dr Darren Egberts
Prayer O God, when we hear of children and adults deceived and taken to unknown places for purposes of sexual exploitation, forced labour, and organ harvesting, our hearts are saddened and our spirits angry that their dignity and rights are ignored through threats, lies, and force. We cry out against the evil practice of this modern slavery, and pray with St Bakhita for it to end. Give us wisdom and courage to reach out and stand with those whose bodies, hearts and spirits have been so wounded, so that together we may make real your promises to fill these sisters and brothers with a love that is tender and good. Send the exploiters away empty-handed to be converted from this wickedness, and help us all to claim the freedom that is your gift to your children. Amen.

Visiting Macedon Ranges Parish Primary Schools A priority for me as a starting principal is to engage with our local Parish Primary Schools as well as other significant education providers in our district. Therefore it has been a great joy to start these visits in the past week; each visit includes time with the school Principal, teaching staff and students. As the destination of choice for most students in the Macedon Ranges desiring a Catholic secondary school education, Sacred Heart has a fundamental responsibility to do whatever it can to develop and nourish authentic and reciprocal relationships with these school communities. College Swimming Sports Last Thursday saw the College community come together for a second time in the week with all students and staff travelling to the Sunbury Aquatic Centre for the annual Swimming Carnival. It was a privilege to meet and talk with so many students, staff and parents on the day, a day that was blessed by perfect weather. Congratulations to all students who participated in one or more events and special congratulations to those who achieved success for their house. It was an extremely close result on the day with Chisholm just pipping McAuley. Thanks to Mr Zanic, the College’s PE staff and the College House Leaders for your enthusiasm and effort. Full results further on in the Newsletter. Yours in Mercy,

I am writing to give our Sacred Heart families notice of upcoming events. Year 7 Welcome Mass and Commissioning, 27 February. This is a lovely evening for meeting parents, students, staff and other families of the Year 7 cohort. We begin at the Atrium with a BBQ at 5:30pm and Mass begins in Quambi at 7:00pm. This is a special event as it is the beginning of the Mercy story for many families and will continue until Year 12 when the journey ends with the Graduation Mass. During the Commissioning, the students are presented with a candle and a badge. I hope that all our families will be able to be there. I am looking forward to meeting you all on 27 February. Year 7 Reflection Days, Monday 4 March & Friday 8 March. Those students who are not on Year 7 Camp, either on the Monday or the Friday, will participate in the Reflection Day. This day is a compulsory day at school. This is a relaxed day of getting to know each other, their teachers and to learn the Mercy Story. This day ties into the Religious Education unit of Our Mercy Story. A day that everyone enjoys. Also we are preparing for the Lenten Season. It begins with Shrove Tuesday on 5 March. We will be selling pancakes and all money raised goes to Caritas – Project Compassion. The idea of Project Compassion fits beautifully as our theme this year is Compassion… from the heart. We will be inviting our College community to give what they can to Caritas. Our Year 12 Retreat is not too far away, 20 – 22 March at Blampied. The students always look forward to this. We have arranged speakers and fun activities. One highlight will be the Op Shop Ball. Frocks and outfits MUST be pre–loved. Little or NO cost should be entered into. We have had wonderful outfits from past decades, from aunties, grandmothers and even a fathers wedding jacket! More information will be provided in the CareMonkey request, so please take care in reading it thoroughly.
DIRECTOR OF FAITH AND MISSION - Annie O’Shannessy
Sacred Heart College Kyneton has now been using its Cyber security system, ‘CYBERHOUND’ for almost twelve months. This system allows for the screening of undesirable content and website material on the College devices. ‘CYBERHOUND’ also provides classroom control for teachers, blocking sites and allowing access only if needed. This level of control varies with year levels and is very current, meaning that things may be adapted locally and quickly. Sacred Heart recommends that parents develop cyber awareness, which simply means taking a sensible approach to using digital devices. ‘CYBERHOUND’ recommend ‘Circle with Disney’ as a simple home security device suitable for the average household, and details are included at the end of this article. There are also many other home security options available. Common sense tips:
Don’t have devices in the bedroom
Don’t put personal details online
Make sure you know who you are communicating with
Do not post inappropriate photos or messages – if you don’t want your grandmother to be offended, then don’t do it
Speak to people in person, not just online
Remember once anything is posted, it is virtually impossible to remove
Circle with Disney Cyberhound the providers of the College Cyber security and Web Filtering Device also are agents for Circle with Disney. Cyberhound describe Circle with Disney as an innovative cybersafety tool that reimagines how families use the internet and keeps children safe. It is expected to become a ‘must have’ household purchase. Circle with Disney lets parents manage screen time and filter content for all connected devices in the home in a unique and positive way. Managed through a companion iOS or Android app, the device helps parents stay informed about children’s online activities and manage screen time in the home, including smart phones, tablets, computers, and gaming consoles. Circle with Disney pairs with home Wi-Fi and provides the ability to filter content, set a bedtime for devices, and even completely pause the internet. Each child’s profile and settings can be customised based on age and parents’ preferences. Parents can go to cybersafehouse.com for further information and full features of Circle with Disney. If Parents elect to purchase the Circle a discount of $39.00 can be claimed at the Cyber Safe House checkout by entering the following discount code VIC-CEO-2018. It may also be available through other retailers. This device is an independent Home Security System, and is not connected in any way to Sacred Heart College security and web filtering system.

At Sacred Heart College we value our partnerships formed between families, the College and Community. We aim to continue supporting our families and raising parental aware-ness of the benefits of engaging in their children’s education along with providing them with the skills to do so. We hope that you enjoy this new regular feature in our Newsletter, and the articles presented which may assist you in supporting your children’s education and wellbeing. We are thrilled to host Andrew Fuller on 13 March at the College at 7pm. His presentation ‘Building Resilience in our Children & Teens’ focuses on the key factors that can promote resilience in our children. As a precursor to this evening we have included another informative article by Andrew Fuller for your information. Please click on the following link: Andrew Fuller - How to be Happy

Semper Fidelis - Compassion...from the Heart The Class of 2018 has achieved excellent results and can be proud of their achievements. As a group of students, they were a close-knit community and were supportive of each other. Our College Dux, Jason Vardon, and Dux Proximus, Ruth Hughes, achieved excellent results. Jason will be attending The University of Melbourne to study Commerce/Engineering and Ruth will also be attending The University of Melbourne to study Science/Engineering. Our Top Ten best performing students are to be congratulated for their excellent results, achieved through hard work, commitment and by building good relationships with their teachers, who supported them in Year 12. Students at Sacred Heart excel in many areas, including sport, performing and visual arts and areas of vocational pathways into industry. Our academic achievements add to the culture, diversity and rich courses we offer at the College to ensure our students have a ‘vibrant life.’

DIRECTOR OF TRANSITION AND CURRICULUM - Joanne Holmes
Transition at Sacred Heart College Our students have settled back into the 2019 school year with each level taking on the new challenges offered for their year level. Subject and elective changes have been finalised and students are applying their energy into their courses. Year 9-11 will be able to make Semester Two changes from 27 May to 7 June. On 4 and 7 March the Grade 5 students from our feeder schools will visit Sacred Heart for a Transition immersion into secondary school. The students will have the opportunity to experience and complete a range of subject based activities that showcase ‘life in secondary school’. We hope this experience will help students understand and feel more confident about moving to secondary school in 2021. Our Year 7 students have settled in, making new friends and experiencing a wide range of subjects and activities. The Year 7 students are undertaking ACER- PAT Tests this week in Numeracy and Literacy related areas. This will provide the Year 7 Teachers with information to help differentiate and tailor learning in their classrooms. These tests are a formative tool and do not appear on the student’s report. The College moved to NAPLAN Online Testing in 2018 and will continue this in 2019. Years 7 and 9 students participate in NAPLAN, completing the tests on their laptop devices. We must undertake a Co-ordinated Practice Test (CPT) on Thursday 28 March to ensure the College’s IT network is able to cope with the demand. It also provides the students with an opportunity to be familiar with the way the tests work on line. The Year 9 LINCS (Learning, Initiating and Connecting for Success) class participated in a day camp at the PGL Adventure Camp. They enjoyed the experience and took up many challenges on the day, with teambuilding and communication a strong focus. Look out in further newsletters for more information on the Camp experience.
MUSIC NOTES - Terry Carrick
Welcome back to Sacred Heart for 2019! The Music department has started off with a bang, and Week 2 saw our first formal performance opportunity, our Beginning Of Year Mass. I'd like to thank the students for attending rehearsals during their lunchtimes, when they'd rather be out catching up about the holidays with their friends. This shows a great deal of passion from the students for contributing to the musical culture of Sacred Heart. As a result, our mass was a wonderful celebration for the beginning of the year. Our Instrumental Music program continues to flourish with approximately 110 instrumental lessons happening every week! This is phenomenal for this early in the term. For those students unfamiliar with the program, we have ten Instrumental Music teachers on staff, covering quality lessons on a multitude of instruments. Even though a student may not have yet enrolled to learn an instrument, we welcome enrolments at any time! Students can get an enrolment
form from the General Reception or from the Music department. Students can also enrol online, by clicking this link. A very important element of our Music department is our Friends Of the Music Program (FOMP). This group of parents and friends help support the Music department by providing assistance for events. We meet three times a year, and all time spent contributing to FOMP is counted towards the College's Service Scheme hours. Our first meeting for the year will take place in the Music Room at 7pm on Monday 4 March. Please contact me by phoning the College or by emailing: [email protected] for more information. We look forward to some new input and friendly faces.

Jordan Savoia - Sports Captain
Thursday 14 February was an absolutely fantastic day for our annual swimming carnival. It was great to see students getting involved, whether it was swimming for their House, cheering on the sides or helping with the food stalls for Mercy@Work. The weather was wonderful and students were able to enjoy a more relaxing day after the busy first two weeks of Term. The Year 12 students displayed their incredible costumes, celebrating their last ever swimming carnival with a celebratory final jump!
Congratulations to Chisolm House who took out the win for the day - the participation and hard work paid off yet again! A huge thank you goes to all the teachers involved. The marshalls, timers, supervisors, organisers and MCs all did an amazing job, and the day would not have been possible without you all! A special thank you to Mr Zanic for organising the carnival, it ran extremely smoothly! We wish all the students luck who will be competing and representing the school in the next level of swimming!

Prize winning creativity on show at Next Gen Exhibition
Congratulations to Hannah Cooper for having her artwork selected for inclusion in the Next Gen Exhibition, currently on display at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The exhibition showcases the achievements of students from regional Western Victoria, who completed VCE subjects within The Arts in 2018. Hannah completed Studio Arts (Units 3 and 4) as a Year 11 student in 2018 and is currently completing Year 12. At the recent exhibition opening she was further recognised, receiving the award for 'Outstanding Work by a Female Artist', sponsored by Soroptimist International Ballarat Inc. Hannah’s hand-printed lino cuts on paper titled ‘Chaos and Harmony’ examine her personal interest in human connections… “Ultimately, I was inspired to make something that reflected the chaos and harmony of our world as I constantly saw references in the media to war zones, discrimination, climate change, relationship breakdown, displaced people and refugees. Conceptually I wanted to show how people face these challenges amid the constant murmur of everything around them.” said Hannah. Well done Hannah!
The Teachers’ Exhibition is on in the Backspace Gallery (behind the Art Gallery of Ballarat) from 21 February to 3 March. This exhibition, showcasing the talents of many art teachers from our region, is presented as a complement to the Next Gen 2019 exhibition. As practising artists, these teachers pass on their skills to their students. A wide variety of media and themes will be included.

2. A medical certificate for non-attendance for compulsory College events will be required by the College. I am sure you appreciate the duty of care that the College must ensure is at the best possible standard, and the need to ensure that students avail themselves of all the College activities that go towards building community spirit and the education of the whole person.
On Wednesday 20
February a group of 20 students and 2 teachers from Lycée Notre-Dame du Roc arrived at the College.
They will stay at the College until Wednesday 6 March. Please say bonjour or g’day to the group if you see them around and make them feel welcome during their stay. We thank all families for their support in hosting the group from France. Stay tuned for a planned futsal match at lunchtime on Friday 1 March.

Catherine McAuley Library News - Jodie Warner It was so great to see so many students and staff taking the leap and sign-ing up for our ‘Blind Date with a Book’ for Library Lovers’ Week. If you did, did you love your book? Was it a perfect match? Or did we miss the mark? We’d love your feedback or perhaps you could write us a quick review! Year 7 classes have all ‘Survived’ the library, navigating their way through a series of Survivor-style challenges, working as a
team to find resources and learn all about the library and its services. They have borrowed books for their English reading classes, and it’s been delightful seeing them at lunchtimes and recess busily reading and drawing and playing games. Welcome Year 7s!

VCAL TEAM BULDING DAY - Chelsea Woller Year 11
On Monday 18 February, the Year 11 and 12 VCAL students for 2019 engaged in an amazing opportunity at Campaspe Downs. This one day excursion was based around team building exercises, which involved completing courage based activities.
As a group, and as individuals, we participated in challenges that helped us to develop confidence in ourselves, work effectively and efficiently in a team, improve our problem solving skills and forge closer bonds with our peers in VCAL. We worked really hard to complete the tasks we were given by the amazing instructors. In the end, we weren’t able to complete some of the tasks as we found them really difficult, but everyone gave it a go and felt really proud after completing the activities that they could do. The challenge-by-choice activities were definitely the most rewarding parts of our journey at Campaspe Downs. We did rock climbing, zip lining and team building exercises. We spent the day together as a group and grew closer together as friends after the excursion.
I would like to give a MASSIVE thank you to Mrs Campbell, Mrs Payne, Mr Paxton, Ms Shennan and Ms Garvey, as well as the staff of Campaspe Downs and everyone who attended. It was an absolutely sensational day that all would definitely do again.

Year 7 Immunisations - Every day vaccination saves lives and makes it possible for Victorians to live free from the illness and disability caused by many infectious diseases. All Year 7 Victorian secondary students have the opportunity to receive the following free vaccines.
Diptheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – single dose Human papillomavirus (HPV) – 2 doses (minimum 6 months apart)
Year 7 students at Sacred Heart College will receive their immunisations on
Friday 15 March 2019 and Friday 18 October 2019. Local councils deliver the program and schools distribute the vaccine information and consent card booklets.
The next step will be to read the information provided in your child’s consent card booklet and complete all sections. Detach Part A with all fields completed, and return to the College. Without returning Part A of the consent card booklet, a student may miss the opportunity to be vaccinated. It is important this section is completed and returned to the school, regardless of whether you consent for your child to be vaccinated or not as part of the school-based program. All consent cards should have now been returned. Should you require further information please do not hesitate to contact the College on 5421 1200.
MEDICATION SAFETY
Students are no longer able to keep medications in their school bags, lockers or on their person due to safety concerns. To ensure safe administration and storage of medications, any student requiring medication while at school must hand their medication into FIRST AID, where it will be stored in a locked cupboard. Medication needs to be clearly labelled with the student’s name and in its original packaging. All medication needs to be accompanied by a completed Medical Authority Form. A Medial Authority Form can be found on PAM and on the College website under enrol with us/policies and forms. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Health Centre Coordinator, Jalna Holmes at the College on 5421 1200
