PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Dr Darren Egberts

NEWSLETTER 6 June 2019

At this time of the year, most of our students are busy completing final assessment tasks or undertaking semester examinations. My prayer today invites us to keep these young people in our prayers as they work to achieve to the best of their ability. The College’s examination program is part of the important assessment process that students and teacher use to review their learning growth over the last four months. As important as the final result is the reflection that students need to complete to identify opportunities for further learning and reinforcement next term. Staff Reconciliation Activity

As part of Reconciliation Week, all Sacred Heart College staff participated last Tuesday in a special reconciliation activity prepared by Mrs Moira West. It included a number of different aspects exploring the 2019 theme ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage’ including a staff prayer, testimonies from four College staff on their own experience in being indigenous or working with indigenous Australians, and the opportunity to reflect on the place that for each of us means home.

Staff Professional Development Day – ‘The Positive and Productive Classroom’ On Monday, all Sacred Heart teaching staff and Learning Support Officers spent a very productive day reflecting on the key elements necessary to facilitate the best learning environments possible in our classrooms. The day was led by educational consultant, Jo Lange, and included examination of the personality types often seen in today’s adolescents, and how knowledge of these personality types can be used to encourage positive behaviours in young people. The day was filled with lots of discussion around practical situations and strategies to ensure the best learning outcomes for each student in the classroom.

Victorian Babies Congratulations to two members of the Sacred Heart College staff community who each welcomed babies into their families in recent weeks:

Victoria Young welcomed George Murray John Ellis on Monday 13 May; and

Victoria MacKay welcomed Jacob Daniel Porter on Sunday 2 June. All is going well for both families and we wish them all the best in the glorious early weeks of a child’s life. Sacred Heart College Instrumental Evening Last week, almost one hundred College students took the opportunity to showcase their musical talents at our Instrumental Music Evening. Although it was positively frosty in the Chapel, the atmosphere otherwise was very warm. It was a delight for me to be able to see the Performing Arts on great display and to applaud the courage of so many of our students who performed. Especially as many had only recently taken up particular instruments. Thanks to all the instrumental teachers for your commitment to the program and to the young people you engage. Music gives them so much. Sacred Heart College Junior Chef This morning, I was overwhelmed to be a judge in the first round of the Sacred Heart College Junior Chef competition. The College enjoyed the noise and excitement of six teams of Grade 4 students from our local parish primary schools. The children came well prepared and produced some amazing plates of pancakes, berry sauce and accompaniments. Each team will return to the College in two weeks for the Junior Chef finals where pasta is on the menu! Yours in Mercy, Dr Darren Egberts Principal

COMING SOON …………..MERCY DAY!! On 28 June, the last day of school this term, Sacred Heart College Kyneton will hold its annual Mercy Day. The purpose of this day is two-fold: to raise money for Mercy Works, the charity arm of the Sisters of Mercy, and to celebrate as a school community what makes Sacred Heart a great place to be. The day will consist of:

A short Assembly

Cross country run

Colour Run/walk

Lots of lunch options

Fundraising activities/photo booth/sumo suits/music/bubble soccer

House activities

Early finish

Students are able to wear casual clothes on the day. The currency for the day will be pre purchased coupons at $2 each. On Tuesday, an envelope will be given to each student so that they can buy coupons for the day. There will be a $10 limit for this, but extra tickets can be purchased on the day. This is to prevent over purchasing. This year we are holding the fabulous bi-annual Colour Run. This event is fun and extremely colourful, and may be run or walked. Students will need to change into old clothes for the Run, with preferably a white t-shirt to enhance the coloured pow-der. They will also need to bring a clean towel for clean-up afterwards. The Colour Run costs $5 per student, and profits go to Mercy Works.

Lunch consists of a large variety of food options: * BBQ: sausages, veggie burgers and hamburgers with coleslaw and onion

optional * hotdogs * Baked potatoes with cheese, sour cream and coleslaw options * Popcorn * Slushies * Hot chocolates * Cinnamon donuts

These can be purchased with one or two coupons. The day will also comprise House Sports – activities participated in by Houses to gain points for an overall tally. The winner will receive the Mercy Day House Shield, and the students in that House will share a bar-b-que lunch next term. Points can be gained by wearing items of clothing in House colours, for participating in the events and for winning as a team. Mercy Day is an important cultural day for Sacred Heart. It is where students of all year levels get to mix, compete, and enjoy each other’s company. It is a wonderful way to both celebrate and to finish off a very busy term. The day will finish at 2.30pm. UNIFORM – WINTER Winter has arrived with a vengeance, and with it an opportunity to review the warmth of our new uniform. When the winter uniform is worn in its entirety, it is a functional, warm uniform. As we know, Kyneton is very cold in the winter. The College is introducing a Sacred Heart beanie as a means of providing warmth during recess and lunchtimes. This will be available early third term. During this very cold weather, it has also been suggested that a warmer coat option could be trialled. For the rest of this term, and Term 3, if students wish to, they may wear a blue or black puffer jacket for warmth. The College Blazer must still be worn to and from school. We will review this at the end of Term 3 to gain students’ feedback.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - LEARNING & TEACHING - Debra McNaughton

News from East Timor At the end of last year, we reported that a group of students and staff packed up our ‘old and brand new’ uniform and, through Rotary, shipped it to East Timor. This has been a project with the Macedon Ranges Friends of East Timor and it is delightful to see the Sacred Heart uniform being proudly worn by teachers from the school run by Sister Carmelita. The photo was taken as they were attending a special ceremony to celebrate Independence Restoration Day on 20 May. We are pleased that our ‘old’ uniform has been put to good use.

To RSVP (for catering purposes) please email me or contact the College. [email protected]

The Stronger Rally This one day Retreat is a great opportunity to join with other young people to explore faith and have fun. Once registered, pick up transport from the Bendigo station can be arranged. Fr Rob Galea and his band will be performing. The focus will be on the story of Jesus walking on the water and the idea of trust.

MERCY@WORK NEWS - Viv Penney

RECONCILIATION WEEK Last week saw us commemorate Reconciliation Week in Australia. At our SHC staff meeting on the Tuesday night we acknowledged our indigenous brothers and sisters and a few staff members shared their personal stories. On Thursday 30 May we held a Casual clothes day, and at lunchtime a sausage sizzle. The delicious sausages were cooked by this year’s Jarlmadangah students, who are eagerly awaiting our trip which leaves on 21 July to visit the community, near Derby in Western Australia. All proceeds raised from the Casual clothes day and the sausage sizzle will be put towards a fund to help bring some of the students and teachers from the Jarlmadangah Community, down to SHC in 2020. Unfortunately due to poor weather the annual Marngrook football game between Year 12s and staff had to be postponed. Hopefully we will hold this match in Term 3.

SEEDS OF JUSTICE CONFERENCE: 23 – 24 MAY , 2019

On 23 and 24 May, Daniel Boulton, Jade Gledhill, Isabella Grant, Mrs Penney and I were lucky enough to go to the Seeds of Justice Conference. The theme of the conference was Climate Action: Caring for our Common Home. We had two speakers come from an organisation in Bathurst called Rahimim, a waste-free self-sufficient farm, linked to the Mercy Sisters. It was amazing to hear their take on our climate crisis. We had the opportunity to work together with the other schools, figuring out the best way to reach older generations and ultimately the Australian Government. My biggest take away from the two days was, that if the history of the world was put into 24 hours, humans would have only been here for 3 seconds, yet have caused the most damage. Our aim will be to take positive action back at Sacred Heart and show that even every little bit can make a difference. Anna Donnelly I was slightly nervous at first because I had no clue what was going to happen at Seeds of Justice, whether it was an excursion with professionals just talking to us, or if it was team building exercises! I was going in absolutely blind but surprisingly it was extremely chill. We had two instructors. It was predominantly girls at the conference with just a few guys. The topic we learned about was Global Warming. We learned about our own ecological footprint; what we can do to help prevent global warming, how to spread awareness on ways to reduce our own effect on the planet and how our school can be more ecologically beneficial. MUSIC NOTES - Terry Carrick

Between the hours of 7pm and 9pm last Tuesday the College was rejoicing with the sounds of music. Every instrumental music student performed a prepared piece to their family and friends. Students from Yr 7 to Yr 12 showcased their talents, whether it was their first or final recital evening. Congratulations to all of those who performed, especially those for whom it was there first time in front of an audience. Music Dates to watch out for: Tuesday 18 June – Ensembles Concert in the Theatre. Thursday 20 June – Feeder school tour. The choir, guitar ensemble and show band head out on a road trip to perform at three different Primary Schools on one day.

YEAR 7 GIRLS’ INTER-SCHOOL SOCCER On Friday 31 May, thirteen of the Year 7 girls went to the Interschool Soccer in Sunbury. We all worked really well together and stayed strong as a team. We only got to play two teams which was a shame. The first team we played was really nice and congratulated us after the match The other team was not as nice. We drew with the first team 1-1 but lost to the other team 1-0. Lots of us were so close to scoring but the goal Akira managed to slip in was amazing! Thanks also to Zoe Plias who coached us and Gabrielle Smith and Mrs Penney who helped us on the day. It was a really fun day but it rained a lot!

LINK: Fact Sheet for Parents, Guardians and Carers

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data: NCCDS, GUARDIANS AND ARERS The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD), is an annual collection that counts the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability and the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students. Each of the included students has been identified by a school team as receiving a reasonable adjustment to address a disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Why is this Data being collected? All schools across Australia collect information about students with disability. However, until recently, the type of information collected has varied between each state and territory and across government, Catholic and independent school sectors. The national data collection ensures that, for the first time, information about students with disability is transparent, con-sistent and reliable at a national level. A nationally consistent approach to collecting data provides evidence on:

• the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability • the level of adjustment they receive • the broad type of disability.

Better information about school students with disability helps parents, carers, teachers, principals, education authorities and government to gain a more complete understanding of students who are receiving adjustments because of disability and how to best support them to take part in schooling on the same basis as other students.

FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE NCCD Please click the links below to read the Fact Sheet for Parents and to view the NCCD infographic. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact the College. You can also visit the NCCD Portal at https://www.nccd.edu.au/ for information about the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, Disability Standards for Education and the NCCD. Curriculum and Transition Matters NAPLAN 2019 The NAPLAN Online tests for 2019 are now complete. The students approached the NAPLAN tests in a positive way, maintaining the test environment, and most were well prepared with fully charged devices and earphones. We thank all of the parents for their support in ensuring that students were well prepared. NAPLAN results are released later in the year and parents/guardians will receive a hard copy of these results. We will continue to use the information as part of our planning, curriculum design and differentiation in the classroom to ensure all learning needs of our students are met. Semester Two Subject and Elective Changes The Year 9-11 subject and elective changes for Semester Two will close on Friday 7 June. We have provided two weeks for the students to make any changes and this has been advertised through Daily Messages and the Newsletter. Students making changes will be required to obtain all texts, stationery and supplies for the subject by the start of Term 3. Parents and students are reminded that Semester Two begins at the start of Term 3, not in the last two weeks of Term 2 as in previous years. The Semester Two timetable will be rolled out over the Term 2 holidays.

HOUSE ORIENTEERING 2019 The morning weather wasn’t looking promising, but with fingers and toes crossed, it managed to clear long enough to run our now annual House Orienteering Carnival at the Kyneton Botanic Gardens. With two different courses set up, increased distance and 25 different markers to decide between, it was definitely a far more challenging course than previous years. To the students’ credit they managed very well and participated with true house spirit. Congratulations to the winners and all other participants on the day. Please see below for the full details of results. A special thanks to the staff and students who helped out on the day.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM - Samantha Caddey

Year 11s Product Design and Technology (Textiles) have been studying Sustainability as part of their course, and to upskill at the start of the year, students made Boomerang Bags. Supported by Kyneton boomerang Bags (but fabric recycled from SHC) there are now a dozen very cool looking Boomerang Bags out in Kyneton community, which are a very environmentally friendly way of carrying your shopping. To follow up from that, we looked at social sustainability and how different organisations use fashion and fabrics based businesses to be socially sustainable, to support the disadvantaged, or pay fair wages for fair work. Students designed their own reusable bags for different target audiences, and created them from fabric sourced from Kyneton’s very own op-shops. We would like to thank the following op-shops for letting us explore their goods

1. Salvation Army

2. Kyneton Caring Community

3. Uniting Church Op-shop

4. The Pre-loved Pedlar

DAX Centre - Melbourne University - Belinda Kime The Year 11 Health and Human Development classes went to the DAX centre in Melbourne University on 29 May. This links to our current curriculum where we have been looking at youth health and wellbeing areas that require action. This topic includes mental health issues such as youth anxiety, depression and stress. The DAX centre is an art gallery which aims to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. All of the works are completed by people who have lived with mental health issues and would like to connect with the community and start conversations about their experiences through their art. Our tour educator was informative and explained what life would have been like for individuals who had lived in mental asylums, prior to the 1950s. Dr Dax, a psychiatrist, was at the time employed to clean up the asylums and he introduced art therapy as a way of improving health outcomes for the pa-tients. This was the beginning of the Cunningham Dax collection and the gallery now has 16,000 pieces of artwork. It is the only one of its kind in Australia, and the artworks are heritage listed. We learned through the art work stories such as inter-generational mental health issues, the feeling of anxiety and not having the ability to leave your home and post-traumatic stress, such as after the Black Saturday bush fires. We also had the opportunity to hear a mental health advocate, Arthur, discussed with the group his life story. This included his own personal experiences with mental health disorders, how he lives his everyday life and coping strategies. Students had an opportunity to ask Arthur personal questions, which he was happy to answer. He left us with a positive life message that he has hope. Feedback from the student about the excursion was really positive. Many said that it was quite confronting and it opened their eyes to the issues others face when it comes to mental illness. They felt they have a better understanding of how peo-ple with mental illness feel and the stigma behind it. They described the tour educators as engaging, knowledgeable and approachable. Some mentioned that they would like to return in their own time. Students were also able to experience a little bit of university life by visiting union house and purchasing lunch. There was a small farmers’ market at which many enjoyed the variety of multicultural feasts that were on offer.

Plain English Speaking Award - Laura Sheppard, English Learning Area Leader On Friday 24 May two Year 12 students, Maggie Clune and Natasha McIntyre, travelled to Overnewton College in Keilor to compete in the Plain English Speaking Award regional finals. PESA is a public-speaking competition facilitated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority for students aged 15-18 years. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to build self-confidence and extend their skills in oral communication, speech writing and research. The competition encourages students from government, Catholic and independent schools to speak to their peers from other schools on topics they are passionate about. The participants must compete in two sections, the prepared section and the impromptu section. For the prepared speech the girls needed to write and present a 6 minute speech on a topic of their choosing. The impromptu section required them to speak for 3 minutes after receiving the topic only 4 minutes prior to taking the stage! This year the topic was ‘Time will Tell’. Both the girls did a wonderful job and received some very positive feedback from the adjudicators. Congratulations to Maggie for coming in third place overall, and to Natasha for coming fourth overall. This was a wonderful result! Sacred Heart has always produced some amazing public speakers and we look forward to our continued involvement in this competition in the future.
