Proyecto Horizonte
On behalf of the entire team
of Proyecto Horizonte, I wish
you all the best for the year
2011. On February 1st 2011,
the new school year started
for over 700 children.
We want to take this as an
opportunity to tell you more
about our new sponsoring
program. As you know, our
work is based 100% on dona-
tions and we are grateful for
all of our friends who help us.
We want to expand the cir-
cle of supporters. Recurring
donations are a great way to
help us. Donations of as little
as $10/month helps! For a
little more, $15/month, you
can support one child.
Through our website, donat-
ing is very easy. Just go to
www.proyectohorizonte.org.
Hit the “Donate Now” but-
ton and enter the desired
donation.
You have many options: de-
pending on your preferences
you can sponsor one or
many kids, a teacher or
even a class. We can also
tailor a package for you.
Of course you can change or
cancel a recurring donation
at any time.
As a donor, we will of course
keep you informed about our
work.

On Wednesday, November
29, the students of our
school participated in the
annual celebration of the
Boni Juancito Pinto, a govern-
ment-sponsored bonus given
to all Bolivian schoolchildren
through the eighth grade.
Each student received 200
Bolivianos ($25) in cash to
use toward educational ex-
penses. Children were ac-
companied by their parents,
siblings, and relatives on this
day and gathered in the
schoolyard to await their
bonuses. As we also started,
our inscriptions for the next
school year around that date,
we provided the opportunity
to use the money in the de-
sired way!
Proyecto Horizonte also
took advantage of the day to
promote various initiatives,
including the ongoing SODIS
project, outreach for adult
educational and development
opportunities, the artisan
handicraft of Tantakuna, and
general information regarding
the opportunities offered by
Proyecto Horizonte. More
than 500 students and rela-
tives in attendance learned
about all the programs
Proyecto Horizonte offers in
the community of Mineros
San Juan and many took steps
to participate in development
programs. A large satellite
map of the community was
available for residents to
mark their homes and sign up
for home visits from various
professionals to learn about
topics ranging from solar
water disinfection and baking
to financial management and
disease prevention. More
than fifty homes in the com-
munity were marked on this
day. In the following weeks,
psychological and nursing
interns began visiting the
interested community mem-
bers in their own homes to
discuss opportunities for
learning and development.
These door-to-door visits
will continue in 2011.

Year end Celebrations and Graduation at the Kindergarten
proximately 300 people. With
the help and guidance of edu-
cators and staff, children ages
two to five performed tradi-
tional Bolivian dances and
other musical numbers in the
courtyard of the guardería in
an array of colorful (and
sometimes sparkly!) costumes
and outfits. The day marked
the end of the year for the
children and their promotion
to the next grade. On the
following day, November
31st, the guardería celebrated
the graduation of the kinder-
garten students to the 1st
Grade in a ceremony sur-
rounded by the childrens’
friends and families.
On Thursday, November 30,
2011, Proyecto Horizonte’s
initial learning center ob-
served the last day of classes
with a large celebration
shared by educators, stu-
dents, relatives, and Proyecto
Horizonte staff. Each grade
prepared a small demonstra-
tion for the audience of ap-

On the morning of Wednes-
day, December 22nd, the
children of Mineros San Juan
and their parents gathered at
the guardería to celebrate
Christmas and the end of the
year. The doctors and staff of
the health center, along with
several nursing interns and
Proyecto Horizonte volun-
teers, organized the celebra-
tion and arranged small
Christmas gifts for each child.
Just under 700 children of the
community enjoyed a holiday
breakfast of sweet buns and
mugs of hot chocolate. After
eating, the kids eagerly lined
up to receive their presents.
Each child received a gift bag,
containing small toys, choco-
lates, and sweets. Children sat
along the street opening their
presents together and playing
with their new dolls, trucks,
and other toys. The celebra-
tion marked the end of a suc-
cessful, healthy, and safe year
for Proyecto Horizonte with
the promise of another year
of advancement and accom-
plishment in 2011.

year as the director.
How did you come to the
"Proyecto Horizonte?
I was invited by Niki and Os-
valdo, but my husband Gui-
llermo was the one who
really convinced me to come
work here. I initially did not
liked the idea of working with
adults, but his enthusiasm for
Proyecto Horizonte really
made me want to do it.
What is the most gratify-
ing aspect of your work at
Proyecto Horizonte?
I worked with children for 35
years before coming here. It’s
very different to work with
adults because children are
more frank, simpler, and the
adults have a much harder
time opening up. But working
with adults has given me the
opportunity to hear their
stories and understand their
experiences, and it’s very
different from what I had
done with children before.
That’s what I like best.
If you could change some-
thing in the community of
Mineros San Juan, what
would it be?
I would eliminate illiteracy in
the community.
What do you think is the
greatest challenge of Min-
eros San Juan today?
I think the greatest challenge
Gloria Terceros is the direc-
tor of Proyecto Horizonte’s
adult education program. A
native Cochabambina, Gloria
has been an educator for al-
most 40 years in and around
the city. This will be her third
is improving life opportuni-
ties—not only economic
situations, but social situa-
tions as well. Many of the
women in the community
tell us that their husbands
don’t want them to study.
The husbands and the fa-
thers of the community
need to be convinced that
the education of women is
important. The real chal-
lenge is changing attitudes.
What makes you want
to continue working at
Proyecto Horizonte?
Well, I love to teach. I also
like the voluntary work. It’s
important to serve those
who have less. Since 2004 Raquel Carbajal
works in Proyecto Horizonte as

community development
Proyecto Horizonte is financed mainly by donations. We guarantee effi-ciency and transparency in the use of funds and, if you desire, you can be-
come personally involved in the project’s activities. Our current organizational structure allows us to use almost 100% of dona-tions in the project. No administrative costs or other expenses will reduce your donation. All volunteers work for free both in and outside of Bolivia.

Sale of Handcraft and
Postcards
We have postcards and small
handcraft from the work at
Proyecto Horizonte. They are
ideal gifts or sales items. For
example a hotel was selling
our famous key-chains
through the minibars in the
rooms. Please let us know if
you have similar ideas and we
can help you set this up.

please let us know and if you
have some spare time, also
please help us by promoting
our work through those
channels.

We also look for volunteers
who help us from their home.
You don’t have to travel to
