Noah Webster famously stated: “In selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate – look to his character.” This is the 100th anniver-sary of the United States of America’s entry into World War I, where the songs “Over There,” "It’s a Long Way to Tipperary,” and “Keep the Home Fires Burning” were popular and are still heard today. As in November, when we remembered Veterans Day, in December we remember Pearl Harbor and the entry of the United States into World War II on Dec. 8, 1941. Throughout the last century our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen stood in harm’s way around the globe to defend our nation and our cherished liberties. Important Dates and Items to Remember

“The Grosse Pointe Senior Men's Club changed its By Laws at the meeting held

November 25, 2014 regarding both the Officers and Directors of the Club (for up-dated check signing authority) and also the number of members who can endorse the Candidacy of New Members. Now, One or More members can propose new men for membership. As part of that change, the Board had started a New Member Campaign whereby the first sponsor of a new member will be entitled to a complimentary lunch at the luncheon when the new member is introduced to the members present at the lun-cheon. This program is to run from December 1, 2014 to June 1, 2015.

stated: “This letter is written in appreciation for the kindness expressed to me following my husband Don Blain’s passing. He loved the Senior Men’s Club, the camaraderie, presentations, and wide variety of activi-ties available. Don said, “we lose friends during our life and the Senior Men’s Club provides new ones.” He would come home stimulated from a meeting and tell me all about it. I miss his reports. Thank you for providing such stimulus to him during his later years.” May he rest in peace.

I would like to extend to the Officers, Directors, and Members of the SMCGP my best wishes for a Merry and Blessed Christmas, and for a Happy and Prosperous New Year in 2015. THAT SPECIAL CHRISTMAS

When Richard (Dick) Burkholder was a young boy growing up in Detroit, his family often visited relatives in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, a small town with a population of around 7000. Being on the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Huntingdon railroad station in town was an exciting place for a young boy to watch the passing of long coal trains, traveling at high speed, being pulled by two thundering steam locomotives. It was during those early years that Richard’s interest in steam locomotives began. Then, there were the visits to J.L. Hudson’s Christmas toy department where he lingered long around the model train displays. It all came together when, at 10 years old, he received his first model train set for Christmas - a Lionel model steam train. He had already become a confirmed train watcher and thought that some day a model train layout featuring the Pennsylvania Countryside during the steam train era would be an exciting hobby. As he pursued a career as an Automotive Engineer at Chrysler, he and his wife Gail raised a family of two sons and a daughter and continued an an-nual pilgrimage to visit the Hudson Christmas toy department. Dick began to build small model train track configurations to entertain his children but, it was not until he retired in 1996, after 35 years with Chrysler, that he was able to pursue his hobby in earnest. Richard Burkholder has almost completed his significant and colorful “O”gauge model train layout measuring 36ft. by 12ft. built in the basement of his home. It has “three sets of tracks that wind through wooded mountainous terrain, over a trestle, through tunnels and past homes and quaint shops hand built and painted by Burkholder” as reported in the Oc-tober/November 2012 Grosse Pointe Magazine by Dan Shine. All trains, sounds and moving objects are operated from a central control center which he designed. It depicts that small Pennsylvania town he remembered as a boy. To enhance his hobby, he became a collector of vintage model trains which

line his basement walls along with other model train memorabilia. What started as a kid’s dream continued with an exciting hobby after retirement. The Christmas train young Richard received at 10 years old is in a spe-cial glass case. Commenting on his experience after retirement, he said “I was able to fulfill my dream of constructing a model train layout that I could share with families, especially the young children. When I see their excitement, it reminds me of when I was a child”. By Ed Rowady

Reading List

Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 7:00 pm, we have our traditional "POETRY" night at Bob Bradley's home, 60 Pointe Park Place, Grosse Pointe Park. Guests are welcome. RSVP (313) 824-2271. Bring some of you favorite poems. Tell us a bit about them as you read. We listen! You listen too!

Our January 20, 2015 reading is THE GOLD-FINCH by Donna Tartt. The meeting will begin at 5:00pm in the home of Frank Markey, 19290 Ray-mond Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. RSVP (313) 886-8324.

Solomon was born a freeman in upper New York State and enjoyed the blessings of liberty for more than thirty years. A short adventure away from his family in the 1840s to earn money with his musi-cal talent led to his being kidnapped and sold into slavery. He is twelve years in getting his bond-age situation and, particularly, his location known to old friends willing to concern themselves with freeing him.

Cotton was "king" and sugar cane the money crop. Both were work intense. creating a great demand for field hands. With the US banning the importation of slaves after 1807, kidnapping pro-vided them and income for the suppliers. Though often challenged, the characters have all been identified historically. Epps is said to have been copied in UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, as the basis for Simon Legree. The surprising part of our story is the happy ending, but without it there would be no story. One Reader reflected that the evils of slav-ery are well told by one caught up in it against his will. Kidnapping was illegal across the country permitting a structure for the return of the freeborn New Yorker. We see, however, that the inequality of the black man before the law precluded justice for Solomon and punishment for his enslavers.

One Reader made the point that after thirty pages, he knew that he could not hold his attention to the content and elected to view the hour and a half Hollywood movie only to permit joining in our discussion.

Most of our 50+ generation were HOME SCHOOLED in many ways. Do you recognize any of these lessons?

1. My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE.“If you’re going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning.”

2. My mother taught me RELIGION.“You better pray that will come out of the carpet.”

3. My father taught me about TIME TRAVEL. “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!”

4. My father taught me LOGIC.“Because I said so, that’s why.”

5. My mother taught me MORE LOGIC. “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to the store with me.”

6. My mother taught me FORESIGHT.“Make sure you wear clean underwear in case you’re in an accident.”

7. My father taught me IRONY. “Keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about.”

8. My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS. “Shut your mouth and eat your supper.”

9. My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM.“Just you look at that dirt on the back of your neck?”

Home Schooling Thoughts from Ken Van Dellen..............

Continued from page 610. My mother taught me about STAMINA.

“You’ll sit there until all that spinach is gone.” 11. My mother taught me about WEATHER.

“This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.”

12. My mother taught me about HYPERBOLE. “If I told you once, I’ve told you a million times. Don’t exaggerate!”

13. My father taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE. “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out...”

14. My mother taught me about ENVY. “There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don’t have wonderful parents like you do.”

15. My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION. “Just wait until we get home.”

16. My mother taught me about RECEIVING. “You are going to get it from your father when you get home!”

17. My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE. “If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way.”

18. My mother taught me ESP. Put your sweater on; don’t you think I know when you are cold?”

19. My father taught me HUMOR. “When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me.”

20. My mother taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT. “If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.”

21. My mother taught me GENETICS. “You’re just like your father.”

22. My mother taught me about my ROOTS. “Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were born in a barn?”

23. My mother taught me WISDOM. “When you get to be my age you’ll understand.

24. My father taught me about JUSTICE. “One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!”

Only the over-50 crowd will appreciate this be-cause the younger ones would not believe our parents truly told us these “EXACT” words

CABARET NIGHT Sometimes you don't have to go far away to have a festive, social evening. Our holiday Cabaret was proof of that. It certainly was a highlight of the SMC special events program and a fine musical time was had by all in attendance. The War Memorial kitchen was up to its usual high standards with a three course dinner compe-tently served by their ever efficient wait staff. Jack Maloy and his crew provided the old favor-ites for dancing and Denise Stevens fine voice made it easy to get out on the floor and swing and sway one more time. Jack Molloy and his crew provided the old favorites for dancing, and Denise Stevens fine voice made it easy to get out on the floor and swing and sway one more time. For a change of pace, and a display of SMC in house talent, Bill Waugaman entertained us with three tunes on his harmonica--enjoyed by all. Kudos go to those who made the evening special. Sheila Kneeshaw arranged lovely fresh flowers for our tables. Fran Benz hand lettered our place cards and those, along with large printed name tags, kept any senior moments at bay. Our speaking program was kept short and lively by that announcer to the manner born, our president in waiting and MC, Mr. Bob Hynes. He brought on our current helmsman, Charlie Rutherford for a short welcome, and Bob Vogler, who has "a million of them." Working behind the scenes, but expertly putting all the pieces together, was our co-chairman in charge of this event, Tom Kneeshaw. Tom said that he heard good reviews of the night--two couples who said they want to bring friends next year. There were eighty-four folks in attendance--more than '11 or '12 but less that '13. Thanks for coming, those who came--and join us next year, those who missed it.

Your Editor wishes you and your families the Merriest of Holidays and a Great New Year

Is There Any Interest In A New Sports Sub-Club?Is there any interest from the membership of the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe in starting or establishing a sub-club directed to sports including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, softball, horse racing? The VFW magazine, Nov.¬-Dec. 2014 issue on World War II identified veterans who stood out in sports and war alike. Such veterans included baseball players Hank Bauer, Warren E. Spahn, Lou Brissie Jr., and Hoyt Wilhelm. Other professional baseball players who suffered disabling wounds in WWII included Gene Bearden, Johnny Grodzicki, and Bert Shepard, to name a few. Professional football play-ers killed by enemy action in World War II listed 12 players, including three Detroit Lions players: Lt. Charles Behan, a marine killed in 1942 by machine gun fire in Okinawa; Pfc. Alex Ketzkeo, U.S. Army, killed in action in France in 1944, and Capt. Lee Kizzire, U.S. Army Air Force, who was shot down in 1943 over Wewak Island, New Guinea.Does any SMCGP member remember the deceased football players and their days with the Detroit Lions? If you are interested in starting a sports sub-club, please contact Peter Higbie, sub-clubs chairman, or any of-ficer of the SMCGP.

“PTSD is a normal human reaction to an abnormal traumatic event, but similar experiences can affect people differently, from no impact to extremely debilitating,” said VFW Commander-in-Chief John W. Stroud. “You can learn to cope with PTSD by avoiding stressors, but something that is very dif-ficult to live with is a bad conduct discharge.” It is reported that an estimated 250,000 Vietnam-era veterans received less-than-honorable discharges and as many as 80,000 veterans may have had or have PTSD. Such veterans are usually denied VA benefits, such as eligibility for GI Bill payments. It is further reported that the Pentagon will grant those veterans “liberal consideration” when seek-ing to upgrade their discharges. Veterans will be required to show: (a)Evidence of a PTSD diagnosis while they were in the military. (b) The cause of the PTSD was related to military services. (c) The symptoms were a factor in the misconduct that led to the less-than-honorable discharge. Any changes to military records would most likely be confined to veterans who have less-than-honorable discharges, rather than veterans who received bad-conduct or dishonorable discharges. This policy will not be a blanket approval for every upgrade request, but it does open an avenue for those veterans who may have been diagnosed with PTSD years after separa-tion from the military to submit new evidence and hopefully and prayerfully correct an injustice from the past.It is important that action be taken as soon as possible. The Pentagon has ordered all military services to publicize the new ruling over the next two years . I served on an Air Force Discharge Review Board in 1983 where many of the applica-tions for upgrade of less than honorable discharges were approved. I will be pleased to provide further information. Charlie Rutherford

NOTICE REGARDING VETERANS FOR DISCHARGE REVIEWS

You may know a person who received a less-than-honorable discharge from one of our military servic-es. The person could be a friend, family member or acquaintance. He/she could benefit from the Pen-tagon announcement on September 3, 2014, which reported that Vietnam-era and other veterans who received less-than-honorable discharges from the military possibly because of Post Traumatic Stress

Disorder (PTSD) will have a chance to have those discharges upgraded.
