QUILTS OF VALOR

AVQ members Kathy Levesque, Kathy Urban, Dolores Sirca, and Bonnie Schwegerl (on behalf of Gretchen Crozier) presented their QOVs on board the USS Hornet to four deserving female veterans on Sept. 21. Another presentation was held at Alden Lane’s Quilting in the Garden on Sept. 29. We are scheduled to present QOVs on November 2 at the All Service Women Veterans Luncheon in Pleasanton and for the USS Hornet’s 70th Anniversary celebration on November 16. We will be ask-ing Quilts of Valor quiltmakers to present their quilts at these events, so please let us know if you are available.

Unity Assembly in Castro Valley and Livermore Assembly Rainbow Girls continue to work on Quilts of Valor with us at the Masonic Lodge in Pleasanton. Thanks to a story about AVQ’s activities in the Quilts of Valor Foundation newsletter, we have been invited to host a Quilts of Valor Rookie Quilt Project for VFW Women’s Auxillary near Monterey. Plans are being made for a weekend outing, so if you’re interested in participating, please contact me. Donna Karbach

MEMBERSHIP

Dear AVQ members.

I would like to thank Donna Karbach, Jill Dawson, Vicky Shore, Pat Kriletich, Jan Marshall, Bonnie Schwegerl and Sue Green for helping at the membership table with name badges and directories and checking everyone in. Great job ladies! You rock!

Keep your name badge and directory in a safe place that you can remember. The name badge is your membership card and the directory is an important resource. Since we only print one for each member, guard it carefully.

Please welcome our newest members to the guild: Stone Mountain and Daughter Fabrics in Berkeley and The Sewing Machine Shop in Walnut Creek are new affiliate members. Take some time to visit these businesses and see what they have to offer. It could be a fun road trip. Their address, email, website and contact information are in your directory.

Kristin Goedert, Dianne McGovern, Carol Broad and Youngmin Lee joined the guild during the September meeting. Please welcome them when you meet them. Although I did not get time to talk to Dianne and Carol, I was able to see samples of Youngmin’s Bojagi (Wrapping Cloths), which is a unique form of Korean textile art. She holds a master’s degree in fashion design and a bachelor’s degree in clothing and textiles. She has presented numerous workshops, classes and demonstrations on Korean arts and crafts around the Bay Area. Her website is www.youngminlee.com.

Kristin Goedert says that, “After trying practically every craft imaginable (from glassblowing to knitting to sewing to letterpress printing and lots more), I have been quilting for about three years, and I am also learning (or trying to learn!) to sew garments. For both quilting and garment sewing, I am inspired by beautiful fabrics (aren't we all?)- I see one and start to think of what I could make out of it. My favorite type of quilt to make is a traditional one, but made using modern bright graphic fabrics.”

It is so great to meet so many talented people and welcome them to the guild. Mary Walcher, Membership Chair

SAVE THE DATE—HOLIDAY BRUNCH IS NOW A HOLIDAY TEA PARTY

Can you believe the holidays are right around the corner? We want you to have plenty of time to save the date of Dec. 14. It will be our annual Amador Valley Quilters Holiday Brunch. We are changing things up a little this year. It is going to be a Holiday Tea Party. We will enjoy finger sandwiches, fruit, finger desserts and of course plenty of tea (plus coffee and lemonade). We will NOT be sitting on the benches this year. We will be at real tables and sitting on real chairs.

We are looking forward to a Pageant of Holiday Attire. Last year we had lots of holiday sweaters and sweatshirts that added to our holiday festivities. This year we invite you to dig out those holiday fashions plus you can show off some of your holiday quilting creations. (Table runners, tree skirts, wall hangings, place mates, etc, and of course quilts). You will have the opportu-nity of parading around the room for all to see your work. There is plenty of time to get started on the creative process, so let the fun begin.

Our wonderful Community Quilt supporters have spent countless hours of their time and energy working hard on quilts that are donated throughout the year to different organizations. These organizations will share with us the impact the quilts have on those who receive them. Please plan to join us on December 14 for this fun and inspirational meeting. Shirley Greene & Donna Jo

WHAT'S DEDUCTIBLE? —PLANNING FOR TAX SEASON

This note is in answer to the many questions regarding donations to the guild and what is deductible for tax purposes: Here are some pointers.

• All cash donations to the guild are deductible, for

example if you write a check such as in memory of someone.

• However, if you write a check to the guild for ser-

vices (classes) or for purchases (silent auction) those are not deductible as you have received something for your money.

• All material costs for a quilt you donate are de-

ductible. So even though a quilt may take you 60 hours to piece and quilt, you may only deduct the cost of the materials. The labor is your labor of love.

• If you donate a tangible item to the Guild, i.e.

shelving, you may deduct that. If it is new, you have your original receipt. If it is used, there are several on-line places to find a “donation cost”.

AVQ is not responsible to prove cost of donations if

it is questioned by the IRS. When in doubt, contact

your tax advisor.

I hope this helps.

Jeanne B Brophy IPP (Immediate Past President)

COMMUNITY QUILTS

We are proud to share that the Steering Committee has completed sorting all of the fabric from our storage unit. We made $95 on the mystery scrap bags at the September meeting. We have made a number of quilt “kits” of 4-6 yards of fabric that are available to members. Remaining fabrics have been sorted by size.

BACKING FABRICS - We will bring the boxes of 3, 4 or 5 yard pieces to the October meeting. Any member needing backing for a community quilt is welcome to take backing materials. Please measure your quilt before you come to the meeting.

WE NEED 250 + QUILTS - We will accept completed quilts and quilts needing binding at the October and November meetings. We currently have approximately 250 quilts on hand, and will need to double that amount by December to meet the needs of our agencies.

SAVE THE DATE – If you are interested in helping to sort quilts for the December distribution, mark Monday, December 2nd at 2pm at the Pleasanton Masonic Center on your calendar. More information will be in the November newsletter.

LONG ARM QUILTERS - If any of you are long arm quilters and would be willing to quilt 1-6 quilts during 2014, please contact Pam Campion. We realize that your time & talent are valuable and want to make this mutually beneficial to you and the Guild.

BATTING – There are four members who have batting available for you. Please contact any of them to request batting you need for a community quilt. Diane Escobar Pleasanton

Judy Peterson Pleasanton

Pat Hove Castro Valley (after October)

Kathy Levesque Livermore

SIZE INFORMATION – We want to remind you that the quilt size information is on the guild website. We are repeating that information here. Please keep this chart for future reference.

DONATIONS – We continue the policy of not accepting any fabrics, notions, tools or books at this time. In January we will accept any one-yard or larger pieces of child/infant fabrics. We have used all of this type of fabric from our “stash” at this time and need to replenish.

Community Quilts is fortunate to have many volunteers to help in a variety of ways. It is a wonderful example of “It takes a vil-lage”. I am extremely fortunate to coordinate their efforts. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me

RETREAT TIME

It was just over a year ago that I was anxiously looking forward to my very first Quilt Retreat. I had no idea what to expect. I knew there would be classes and free sewing time, beyond that I was in the dark.

If anyone is in that same frame of mind for our next retreat, let me enlighten you.

Things I remember most about our retreat were: new friends, lots of laughs, time to relax, good meals I did not have prepare, fun classes, lots of hugs, leisure walks, lots of laughs, wonderful goodie bags, nightly entertainment, lots of laughs, staying up way too late (but enjoying every minute of party time), moon over the mountain, wonderful new friends, the joy of air conditioning, laughing till it hurts, learning new techniques, tranquility, the joy of new friends, and some sewing time. Did you notice lots of laughs was mentioned several times? That’s because there was so much of it. It was a unique bonding experience with so many wonderful people. The days and nights flew by all too fast.

The day after I got home I started my countdown till June 2014. I wanted to be first on the list, but 10 people signed up before me. I’m truly looking forward to retreat again. Guild meetings are funnier once you know more people. When you see “huggers” at meetings you can pretty much guess they’ve been to a retreat together. I’m looking forward to seeing you there. I’m saving a hug for you. Shirley Greene

LIBRARY

The Library's first monthly book donation sale was well received. Donations totaled $12.00. This will continue each month. Suggested donation will be $2 - $5, to build up funds for book purchases. Your support is welcomed. The FREE book box was a success. This will also continue for a while. The Library is in need of ONE volunteer each month to help Meta and I check in books. Please let me know if you can help oc-casionally. Thank you to the new box sitters! More book boxes will be available if YOU volunteer to take home an odd or even numbered box for a month. See me at the Library table.

The signups for the retreat are growing, however, we still have open slots. To reserve your space you may reach out to either Jeanne Brophy or Audrey Hutchinson to get yourself on the list. I was going to write a “blurb” for this newsletter, but Shirley Greene told me she wanted to do it. So please enjoy her article. Audrey Hutchinson

OBITUARY FOR SHIRLEY ROSE WILEY

Shirley Wiley of Fremont died on September 10, 2013. Many of the older members may remember her work on Block of the Month and as a binder of Community Quilts. This obituary is courtesy of Gretchen Crozier. Shirley Rose Wiley was born Saturday October 1st, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a resident of Niles, California. Shirley passed away peacefully on September 10th, after a lengthy illness at 80 years young. She leaves behind her loving husband of 62 years, Ronald M. Wiley; her son, Steve and daughter-in-law Vicki; grandchildren Mitch, Travis, Angela, Jennifer and Joe, and great-grandchildren Cierra, London, Tristen, Hailey, Alyson and Hunter. Pre-deceased by her loving son, Gary L. Wiley. Her favorite pastime was quilting. As a member of the Amador Valley Quilters Guild for many years, she produced some of the most unbelievably beautiful works of art as gifts to family and friends, and won many awards. She led a wonderful life, and will be missed by so many that loved her. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity is appreciated.

Is that pile/box/bag of scraps getting out of control?

If you answered yes - then come join us at Scrap Happy Day Traders and get some ideas of how to use those scraps and end up with a lovely quilt. We have utilized our scraps in lots of different ways and also do a little socializing and getting to know each other. So if you are free the third Thursday of the month between 10am and noon come join us at the Dublin Library. We are a very flexible group working on lots of different projects, coming up with lots of ideas and generally having fun. PS give a call first so we may let you know what room we will be in. SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF QUILTS & TEXTILES

November 6 – January 19, 2014 Translucence: Cathy Breslaw Southern California artist Cathy Breslaw’s recent work uses a unique material— an industrial mesh sourced in Shanghai—that she layers, manipulates, and combines to create ethereal abstract hangings. In Translucence, a solo exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, wall hangings of various sizes are on exhibit, capturing the transitory nature of light and movement. Her themes play with the ideas of light and space, capturing things that can’t be seen, and the fragility of a moment in time. Breslaw’s stunning transformation of these materials and repurposing from their ordinariness to translucent, floating drawings in space is a symbolic visualization of the Buddha mind, of being in the present moment.

Just Like New group

I'm collecting small print kitty fabric to make cat nip bags. We sell them to raise money to help offset vet costs for rescue animals and to help those who can't afford vet bills for their own pets. I can use any scraps that are at least 4" square. This is an ongoing project so I will be collecting the fabric at every meeting! Thanks, Sandi Fisher

Jan Steinhoff Class: This is my Modern Quilt Sampler that I will be teaching in my classes at San Lorenzo Adult School and for Hayward Area Recreation District. The classes start next week, and they all have room in them. Monday and Thursday nights 6:30-8:30 at Aitken Center on Redwood Road in Castro Valley and Wednesday 9:30 - 12:00 noon at SLZ Adult on Bockman Road in San Lorenzo. The blocks are so fun to do. For those who don't want to learn all these new techniques, I have another project that will run concurrently. The blocks are all from the book Modern Blocks, compiled by Susanne Woods, Stash Books, 2011.

Denise Oyama Miller [email protected] is holding an open studio the first week in October. The artwork is a mixed media art quilt called "Gingko”. Contact her if you would like to attend for more information.
