August Program – Who made this Quilt?

A trunk show

Petra Keller Saturday Lecture/Trunk Show, August 11,

2018, 1:30 p.m., Who Made This Quilt?

This “Black Art” trunk show explores the

desirability and necessity of documenting quilts

and wearable art. Ideas for keeping portfolio

records as well as suggestions for different label

styles and techniques are part of this lecture. As

we look at different labels, we will discuss in

detail how they were made.

President’s Message

Greetings AVQ Friends,

What fun the July Program, the Men’s Panel, was! Jack Brophy, Frank Chambers, George Crozier, and Jeff

Lenigan were artfully lead by Les Duman to share the challenges and benefits of having a quilter spouse. The

panel shared their favorites and regaled us with stories of purchasing excursions and additional support. There

was also a warning sent out about the dreaded long-arm that may seek to inhabit an unsuspecting “man cave”.

Laughter rang and you could see how very proud each was of his quilter.

School will soon resume, but until then, I look forward to learning many new techniques including Afghani

piecing and new prairie point techniques, from our August instructor, Petra Keller, and to registering several

quilts in the upcoming Quilting in the Garden.

A huge thank you goes out to all who volunteered to demonstrate quilting techniques, sell raffle tickets, walk

the floor, or other tasks at the Alameda County Fair. The two beautiful raffle quilts earned AVQ $711! These

proceeds will support our various outreach programs.

Finally, congratulations to all AVQ members who entered the fair, sharing their art, and to the many who took

home awards. Well done!

Keep Stitching,

~ Kathy Proctor, AVQ President

Calling all AV enthusiasts! Would you like to learn how to set up and operate our new audio equipment? If

this is your destiny, please call Joanne Lenigan via an e-mail to: [email protected]. (There is power in that

mic!).

Block of the Month

Square Flower is the August Block of the Month. A charming collection of pinks

surrounds a yellow center. This block features a partial-seam, an easy technique for

creating a complicated look. The finished blocks can be set with sashing, or joined

together for an interesting wave effect

~ Maya Madhavan and Lani Longshore, BOM Co-Chairs

Workshops Are at the Bothwell Arts Center, 2466 8th Street, Livermore

Workshops are 10am – 4pm.

Next Workshop: Sunday, August 12th -- How Do You Do That?

The emphasis of this workshop is to create workbook (reference) pages for techniques we don’t use in our

everyday quilting, but that add special interest to our quilts or wearable art. We will work on Seminole piecing,

Afghani piecing, prairie points (different styles), biscuits or puffs, simple folded flowers (fabric origami in

different shapes), cathedral window, and collage (soft-edge applique) as time permits. When you sign up for this

workshop you get to pick your top priority and learn some new skills.

Welcome New Members to AVQPlease join us for a New Members Luncheon on Saturday

September 8, 2018 at 12 noon (before our regular meeting) at Pleasanton Middle School. We look forward to

getting to know our new members and to share more information about our guild.

Please RSVP by September 1, 2018 to: Lorraine O'Kane at [email protected]

Membership Time

It is renewal time for AVQ Membership! This year, the membership year will be 9/1/18 to 6/30/19 which is a

short year (only 9 months). The AVQ board voted to line up the membership year with AVQ’s fiscal and officer

year. The shorter year means a lower membership fee for both Individuals and Affiliates: only $30!

Check out the online Membership Form which makes renewing quicker and easier than ever. The form can also

be accessed via the AVQ website under the tab “Member Info”, then “Joining/Renewing” and “Membership

Form 2018-19”. While dues are $30, if you want either the Newsletter or Directory mailed to you, the postage

fee is $7 and $1.50 respectively. You can pay either in cash, by check or by credit card (for a $1.25 fee) either

in person, by mail or online. Your renewal must be paid by the September AVQ meeting to be included in the

2018-19 printed Directory.

Upon submittal of your online Membership Form, you’ll receive an email with a copy of your responses. If you

choose to pay by credit card online, you’ll be redirected to the Square website where each item is put into a

shopping cart (just like any online store) after which you check out by entering your credit card info. If you

have any questions, feel free to contact Chris Sagan.

NOTE: I’ll have a freshly printed Directory at the Membership table at the August AVQ meeting with all the

latest updates. Check that your data is correct and, if you have no changes to make, simply pay your dues at the

Membership table and you’re done! I’ll send you a receipt via email. If you do have changes but don’t want to

use the online form, simply ask for a paper form at the Membership table. I’ll also have a tablet available if you

want to make your changes online and skip the paper. ~ Chris Sagan, Membership Chair

In July, a visit from a group of quilters from Washington State brought

in $137.00 in raffle ticket sales. Thanks to Carole Annas who hosted

the mini retreat at her house. At the meeting, we gave out more tickets,

and we took in $525.00. Yay us!

We need sellers for the raffle table at Quilting in the Garden event on

September 22-23. The quilt is set up in the Garden Room so we are

not out in the weather - either hot or rainy. It is a chance to sit down

for a couple of hours and look at the quilts on display, as well as

interact with people passing through. In order to volunteer, please go

to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0944a9aa22a6fa7-quilt

to sign up. You can delete yourself if you make a mistake, or you can exchange with someone else if you need

a particular time. See you in August!

Programs – Planning (Lani & Jan)

It is time to book the 2019-20 speakers. Your Program Co-Chairs, Jan Steinhoff and Lani Longshore, would like

to know what kind of speaker or technique you want to see in the line-up. You can communicate directly with

either of them if you have a burning desire to see and hear someone special. Otherwise, stay tuned for a short

survey coming to your mailbox soon. ~ Lani Longshore & Jan Steinhoff, Program-Planning Co-Chairs

Community Quilts

Community Quilts received 69 quilts in July. Thank you so much for these beautiful quilts. CQ goal is to have

600 quilts for distribution in December. Therefore, CQ is in need of Adult Female and Teen Female quilts at this

time. CQ will accept all types of quilts each month.

Community Quilts will accept quilt tops at this time if you also provide a backing for it. Backings need to be 10

inches wider and 10 inches longer than the quilt tops. Backings can be pieced together. If you have questions

please call Donna Fay Bower. Please if you are making a wheelchair quilt it needs to have a loop on it,

Community Quilts has some pre-cut loops. CQ still has a couple of kits that will be available in July.

Just a reminder, if you plan to make a quilt for Community Quilts, CQ has labels for quilts please stop by

Community Quilts table and pick up labels, also the CQ will provide you with batting. CQ is looking for someone

who would be willing to be a contact for batting in the Livermore area, please call me if you are interested. Please

contact one of our members listed below to make arrangements to get the batting you need.
