Student Achievement A letter to the Principal - extract Dear Ms Williams, I was fortunate enough to be volunteering at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) in Footscray last Friday (7 August) when a very large and generous donation of foodstuffs and toiletries from the Northcote Primary community was delivered by Lou S, her son Max D, and a friend of Ms S's. This donation was initiated by Max and organised through the junior school council, with contributions being made by every class. On behalf of all of the staff and volunteers at the ASRC, I am writing to say thank you very much for your school's wonderful donation. We wish to thank Max for his inspiring initiative, the junior school council for organising the collection, and the school community for the donations. I also wish to thank Lou, Max and their friend for helping us unload another food delivery that had arrived just minutes before they came! We were very short of volunteers on that day, and I am very grateful for their help in dealing with a rush of deliveries. To do its work, the ASRC requires support from the Australian community - financially, in kind, and as volunteers. We volunteers in the food bank are constantly humbled by the generosity of so many people. It is especially inspiring when youngsters like Max demonstrate great humanity and kindness and organise a community collection. Please pass on our thanks to everyone at Northcote Primary for their great kindness. Best wishes, Andrew Trembath Food bank volunteer, Wednesdays and Fridays Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Footscray Congratulations Max D, and all children who responded to the call for donations, as you can see, it was much appreciated.

Principal’s Conference Ross, Assistant Principal, and I, will be attending the Darebin Schools Network Principal Conference on Monday, 24th August, and Tuesday 25th August, of next week. The Conference this year will focus on Health and Wellbeing for School Leaders. Research data shows that while there is considerable variance between Principal class practitioner’s state of Health and Wellbeing, overall well-being scores are lower than for the average ‘citizen’. The report highlights the need for Principal class and aspiring School Leaders to participate in targeted professional learning in order to support their professional practice and personal well-being. The conference aims to provide us with a better understanding of how we can improve our mental and physical health and develop our strategies for dealing with the sometimes complex and/ or highly charged emotional interactions that occur in school communities. It is also a great opportunity to network with our Darebin school colleagues and share practice and strategies. I feel fortunate that I belong to a very supportive local collegiate group of Principals, who are always generous with time and sharing of ideas regarding the many educational, instructional, technical, operational, strategic, legal, and so on, that comes with the leadership role of being the Principal in a school. Linda, Acting Leading Teacher and Prep-2 Team Leader, will be Acting Principal for the two days while Ross and I are on the Conference. I know she will do a great job and we are leaving the school in very good hands!

The Education Sub-committee of School Council is really keen to hear your views on how NPS is going with

reporting on student progress, particularly what you like (or don't like) about the reports and the 3-way

conference process. Please go to the link at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NPSSchoolReport to fill in

an online survey, which will take between 5 and 10 minutes.

The survey will be open until Monday August 24th and results will be discussed at the Education Sub-Committee and fed back through the school newsletter. The Education subcommittee will meet on Monday 24th August at 7.00 p.m. in the school staffroom. All parents are welcome. Please contact Scott Meaklim ([email protected] ) if you plan to join us.

Concerns have been raised regarding the ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ reward item due to the inclusion of four button batteries that can be accessed by unscrewing the back of the torch. Whilst this reward has been independently tested and deemed to meet relevant product standards the Commonwealth Bank have made the decision to proactively withdraw this item from the School Banking Rewards Program. Parents/Guardians are requested to dispose of any ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torches’ their child may have already received as part of the Rewards Program. Students who have previously received a ‘Cosmic Light Beam Torch’ are welcome to redeem an alternative reward item.

Mixed Netball Regionals Report Last Thursday, 13th August, the Northcote Penguins went to Banyule Netball Centre to compete in the regional netball competition. Here we played three games of netball against other division winners. We won our first game against Fitzroy Community School, though it was a tight game. The next game was against an all-boys team from Kismet Park. The Penguins lost this game, but some fantastic skills were displayed by the Penguins. The last game the Penguins played was against Eltham East, we lost this game as well. The Penguins finished third on the Northern Metropolitan ladder. It was a strenuous day of netball but it was great that the Penguins made it that far through the competition. Well done to Indigo, Niamh, Xara, Mia, Heidi, Ella, Georgia, Hannah, Ethan M, Miles, Thomas and Kai By Hannah Kelly

The students have had their first meeting this week and they will be surveying the school community next week regarding possible flavours for gelato. Until next time, grazie for your continuing support and stay tuned for some Italian Apps in coming weeks! Saluti (cheers), Signorina Rosa Italian Teacher and Co-ordinator. Mon/Tues Buongiorno tutti. My name is Elena Frazzetto and I am having the pleasure and privilege of teaching Italian to the Preps and Grades 1-2. Preps are thoroughly enjoying ‘Nella Vecchia Fattoria’, -Old MacDonald had a Farm and learning about farm animals as well as animals from different habitats. They have looked at the sentence structure of ‘il mio animale preferito è….my favourite animal is’ as well as being able to describe their animal as ‘grande-big and piccolo-small’. Grade 1-2 have been consolidating their knowledge of responses to greetings and class directions in Italian. Our topic of study has been ‘Il Corpo’ - the body. As well as familiarising the vocabulary of body parts through song and games, they have progressed admirably in putting a descriptive sentence together. They are also experiencing the beginning of familiarisation with the verb ‘to have.’ E.g. ‘Io ho i capelli lisci, ricci e biondi. Ho gli occhi blu.’- I have long curly blonde hair. I have blue eyes. Buona giornata a tutti.

This week and last week the 5/6 area welcomed three special guest speakers. These guest speakers are parents and

friends of NPS who came to share their wealth of knowledge of an area of science. Each speaker wowed the

audience with great examples and explanations of how science is used in their everyday life.

Paul Gregory (father of Tatiana prep, Luca year 4) impressed the

5/6s with examples of air vortices (in planes and Formula 1 cars)

and how the science behind vortices is used in meteorology.

David Tingay (father of

Jemma, year 5) thrilled the

students by conducting experiments with dry ice. The experiments where

hypothesised, observed and explained by the students and they saw how dry

ice moves from different states of matter. Not only can dry ice make cool

effects, it also is used to snap freeze samples in research labs.

Cat Harvey (friend of NPS) fascinated the 5/6s with information about the

cretaceous period and how fossils are used to gather evidence about the past.

Each guest speaker brought a unique perspective of how they use science in their

everyday life and how an area of interest can be captivated to become a valuable

career. Welcoming the guests to the 5/6 area was a great way to launch and

celebrate National Science Week.

Nicole (5/6 teacher).
